Unexplained video delay on playback

Hi all,
I'm experiencing a strange FCP behavior, which makes it barely usable... But first things first, here's my setup:
G4 MDD Dual 1.25GHz with RAM 768MB
I'm in PAL land (25 fps), doing DV work.
I recently found an unfinished editing project which I had started several years ago in FCP 1.2.1, and I thought it would be best to follow the common advice and finish it in FCP 1.2.1.
So I booted my G4 in OS 9.2.2 with QT 6.5.2 and I opened the project.
Here's the problem: whenever and wherever (Viewer or Canvas) I try to play a clip in FCP, nothing happens for about 1.5 seconds. I mean the playhead stands still and the Viewer or Canvas image doesn't move. Then, after that about 1.5 seconds delay, the playhead jumps to about 1 second and 14 frames (00.00.01.14) and then everything runs smoohtly until the end of the clip/timeline or until I press Stop.
However, manual scrubbing with the mouse or keyboard works just fine. No delay.
Happens everytime, with every clip, with every project I open in FCP 1.2.1. Needless to say, that behavior makes it almost impossible to edit anything.
That never happened on my previous machine, a G3/400 with Mac OS 8.6 and
QT 4.0.1 (QT version provided with FCP 1.2.1).
Seems FCP-related since when I open the capture source clips in QT I get
perfectly smooth playback right from the start.
I know it's a very old version, but I thought I'd ask anyway... Any thoughts?
TIA
Pierre Delafontaine

Hi Denis,
Thanks for the warm welcome, which I appreciate even more considering how tough my question is.
Yes, I did repair permissions and trashed FCP prefs, to no avail. No anti-virus software, my drives aren't full and media is on a separate drive. I've been going by the book since day one, when I started with the G3/400.
Jerry may indeed be on to something, as the list his link points me to doesn't state FCP 1.2.5 (let alone 1.2.1) as being compatible with a G4 MDD. However, I wonder if that means it actually doesn't work on that machine or it hasn't been tested on that machine... I mean, they may just have tested/listed it on the machines that existed at or around the time FCP 1.2 was released...
It does work to a great extent. I just spent part of the evening capturing about 45 mn of footage using 1.2.5 and QT 5.0.2... It's just that delay problem that's gonna make editing a real PITA. And I haven't installed my copy of FCP 4.5 HD yet, for fear of being a little lost on account of the changes in the interface...

  • Delay on playback

Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 running on a brand new Mac Pro (10.5.4, 6 GB RAM, 2x2.8 quad CPUs).
When I hit "play" there is frequently (but not always) about a 5 second delay before playback starts. I haven't seen this problem yet when playing back Source-side material in the viewer.
All Media is stored on an internal 1 TB 3.0 GB/s SATA drive with perhaps 200 GB of material on it. (I.e., mostly empty). The sequence in question is very, very simple. (One video track, 6 audio tracks, no effects or dissolves whatsoever).
What's going on here? I used to use FCP on a G4 PowerMac about 8 years ago and it never had this kind of sluggishness. (Nor did my more recent G5 PowerMac).

    Brian,
It is a pretty small project. (DV footage). No nested sequences, no graphics at all (haven't imported them yet). This is a 2 minute promotional film. There's perhaps 30 minutes of raw footage in the project.
I excluded the drive from Spotlight at your suggestion and haven't seen any improvement. I don't know if I would need to reboot the computer, etc., to see any effect there...
I'm actually starting to think it is something to do with some of the footage. I brought in an old project and wasn't seeing the problem in that project. With the current project, the client delivered some of the footage as a DVD, and I was forced to use Streamclip to rip the footage from the (non-commercial, unprotected) DVD into DV format. The rest of the footage digitized from a DV camera. I wonder if the Streamclip footage is weird in some way that's causing the difficulty? (I've never used footage obtained that way before).
    Thanks for the ideas.

  • Update video in cs6 playback

I have cs6 cloud, premiere 6.03.  Three cameras, video clips about 50 mins. Using CS5, muilticamera works fine in all respects.  When open the project in CS6 and play it, the video often freezes, unfreezes, freezes, etc. If is very difficult to create the project originally in CS6.
I am thinking about getting a new video card (I have a GTS 650, hacked for mercury), but wonder if that is ths issue?
Would appreciate any advice, reactions, etc. Thanks.

Thanks Jim, always appreciate your quick replies.
I still need a little help.
From the linked document, it would appear that the CPU is more likely to be the problem than the video card.  They speak of "video configuration."  What do the mean by that?
On the other hand, the forum is full of discussion about video cards and the need for an appropriate one.
One more question. When the video freezes on playback, if I wait for a minute or so, it restarts.  What is happening during this minute?  (Cleaning the cache doesn't change anything).
    Thanks again.

  • Video rendering and playback option greyed out on Premiere Pro CC 2014

I cannot even click on the Video rendering and playback drop down menu as it is greyed out.
I have a GeForce GTX 660 2GB card which should be supported as it has enough memory. I am on Windows 7.
Would really appreciate if someone has a solution how to enable Mercury Playback Engine in this situation.

Managed to fix the problem by downloading and installing the GeForce CUDA drivers as well as updating graphics card firmware.
The Mercury Playback engine enabled itself in premiere after the updates.

  • External iSight camera video delay in 10.5.2

Since upgrading from Tiger to Leopard, external iSight camera has a short video delay which renders it unusable for video conferencing in iChat AV. Has any one noticed this? The cam has the latest firmware so that is not the problem. The delay is very obvious in Photo Booth as well. The delay is also apparent on my Macbook Pro 17 with built in iSight. Is this normal?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, bzamp1
I do not experience the delay you describe, but I do not have any known solutions to offer. Because the problem is the same on all of your Macs including your MacBook Pro, you can rule out processor speed as the sole problem.
Some iNtel Mac users report poor AV sync in Photo Booth even though they are running no other applications and have plenty of free space on their hard drives. However, you experience the problem with other apps, too. The fact that your problem occurs with multiple software applications remove candidate issues like bad applications software, low internet connection speeds, or improper network configuration.
If you updated to 10.5.2 via your Mac's Software Update... feature, try the following:
    • Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    • Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help.)
    • Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.5.2 Combo Update.
    • Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.

  • I Can Not Change My Video Rendering and Playback Setting...

Normally you should be able to change the "Video rendering and playback" in Project Settings to "Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration", if you're using a some what high-end system... But when I go to the Project Settings, the bar is grey and I can't select anything, all I see is "Mercury Playback Engine Software Only" in grey. I have a HP Pavilion dv8 laptop, with NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M. How can I fix this situation?

Here is a LIST of SUPPORTED VIDEO CARDS. Now, the list might have grown a bit, by now, so I am not sure that this is 100% inclusive today.
    Good luck,

  • Recorded track delayed on playback

Just starting out with Logic. I'm using an Aurora 16 with firewire and a Macbook Pro. Tried to record some bass yesterday, and it seemed fine as we were recording, but the recorded track is delayed on playback. What's up with that?

What were your Buffer settings during recording? I assume you didn't monitor through Logic (Software monitoring) but directly through your Interface otherwise you would have noticed the latency while playing. So set the Buffer settings in the Audio prefs to the lowest possible (try 32 or 64) and see if that improves the issue.
Did you record with your Plug In delay compensation to "All" or "tracks+Busses" or off? Try "tracks" or "off" next time and also make sure you don't have a latency inducing plug on your Stereo outs like Adaptive Limiter or alike.

  • Camera Video and Photo Playback Stuck in Portrait Mode

When viewing video or photos recorded with my new 4G iPod Touch (within the Camera App) the orientation of the playback is stuck in portrait mode. No matter how I rotate the Touch the orientation of the video or photo playback stays in portrait mode. Wondering how to get the content to rotate to landscape mode for viewing? When using other apps on my Touch, rotating the Touch works fine (ie. the app switches to landscape mode). Have already tried locking and unlocking the Orientation Lock but this has no effect on the Camera App playback. Any assistance would be appreciated.

My wife's 4th gen did this last night. I had to reboot it to get it to act normal again. I saw that happen once before on either my 3rd gen touch or my iPhone 4, but I forget which it was. In that case it needed a reboot as well.

  • Audio/Video in sync but session regions are delayed during playback???

So I have a post audio project with 189 tracks.  I've worked in sessions this large before and had no problems....   I'm have audio synced to video, which playsback in sync with the picture.  However,  The regions seem to be off.  When I playback and the playhead scrubs across a region it takes a few more frames until it playes the region....  Wow, what a tough thing to describe. It seems liike theres a delay in the session overall but the audio and video are still in sync....
I thought it could be a processing issue but I'm not even coming close to taxing any of the cores....
    Mac Pro 8 core
    Logic Pro 9.1.8
    Thanks in advance.

Hi People, i have found the answer to my question and thought i might post the cause so anyone else who gets caught can get it sorted.
The answer ended up being that i had an aggregate device as my audio interface (because i have 2 audio interfaces) and so the audio was being delayed in being processed. So i deleted the device in my Audio MIDI Setup (audio page) and thhus, its all good. Quite painfull after a FC reinstall! Ha!!
    Cheers

  • VIDEO/LIVE TV Playback stuttery/jumpy after 20min on WMC, Win 7, Touchsmart 600-1070a

A few weeks ago the playback of either recorded or live TV on my Windows Media Centre in Windows 7 on my HP Touchsmart 600-1070a PC started becoming jumpy after about 20 or so minutes of viewing.  I turn WMC off and back on, but it still lags about 20 frames behind the audio playback, which interestingly is still smooth and even.  I initiated a complete system restore back to factory settings which I thought might fix the problem.  Unfortunately the problem is still occuring.  Just this morning though, I received a message on my desktop saying: "Display Driver Stopped Responding and Has Recovered.  NVIDIA Windows Kernal Mode Driver Ver 186-60 stopped responding and has successfully recovered." Could this be the problem?  I have run HP diagnostics, and there are no errors appearing, although there really should be at least some indication as to why the image begins to lag behind the audio.  Also, my digital TV signal could not finish as it could not receive a channel.  My digital antenna was working fine until a few weeks ago when this stuttering appeared.  Interestingly, watching a movie online also gives me a jumpy, stuttery playback after about 20 minutes.  Can anyone help?  Many thanks, Olga

    Hello Varonte
Are you running Windows 7 32bit or 64bit? Have you tried updating or downgrading your video card drivers? Based on your first post it sounds like a driver issue. Since your video card driver is reporting that it is crashing is one symptom and the delay in video and not audio also indicates it may be video driver related.

Do you have Windows 7 32bit/64bit? I would suggest updating your video card drivers as well. As I stated above the problem sounds like a driver issue.

  • Delay on playback when switching between Sequences (Media Pending)

    Hello guys,
I'm growing quite frustrated with Premiere CC lately.
So I am running CC on a Desktop PC. Core elements are : Asus X-79 Deluxe, Intel i7 4930K, 32gb ram, Geforce Titan.
OS (Win 8.1) and CC are running on a SSD. Footage is on internal 7200rpm HHDs.
All other softwares (mostly Davinci and Red Cine) are working perfectly, fast, no crash what-so-ever. So I thought the system was working fine. But Premiere is a nightmare and I'm trying to figure out where it can come from.
Some issues appeared recently, on the latest version, and I did not have in the previous ones.
First, I was facing a huge problem when simply opening clips from the Project window into the Source player. I usually had a 30-second "Media Pending" every time. When working with 1000+ files, it was simply impossible to work. Weirdly enough, I found a trick : when opening the first clip, I would have this Media Pending issue, but (that's where it gets funny), if I did not play the clip, just stay on the first frame, and opened a second one right away, then the second one wouldn't have the Media Pending issue. As long as I stayed on Frame 1 of each clip, I could open the next one without any issue. Then, once I navigate in those "pre-opened" clip, they'd play fine, without delay. But again, if I went a bit further and opened a new clip (not previously pre-opened) I'd have to go through 30 seconds of Media Pending again. F*** annoying. But whatever, I just had to open all clips before starting editing and then it would work.
But now, I have a very similar issue when I edit further on. Especially if I have several sequences, every time I move from one sequence to the next, it would take several seconds before the video (on the Program Player) would appear. Most of the time, the player just stays black, but a couple of times, I got the Media Pending screen again.
Then, once this is passed, the playback is all over the place. The most common problem is that the video plays, but if I press stop, the cursor stops on the timeline (the UI reacts to what I do) but the video keeps playing.... and I can press stop like a maniac, it stops playing like 20 seconds later... The UI still reacts, I can navigate menus etc... but the video just keeps playing. I have to wait several seconds before being able to work again.
I've tried a lot of things : changing the footage to a different disk, updating Video drivers. I suspect it is related to a fairly new function cause I never had these problems on the previous Premieres (the pre 2014.2 version). But right now, I just missed the deadline of a client today because the program was being so slow. You can imagine I feel a bit stressed.
Let me know if you have experienced stuff like this before, or if you had any idea where it can come from, I would really appreciate your help!
    Thanks a lot!
    Cédric

Yes of course, I know it's mostly the frustration talking, but unfortunately the issues with the software are important enough to affect my job a lot.
And they are still here, I'm really trying different solutions, especially since they appeared recently, they must be linked to a new feature somewhere in Premiere. Any idea what it could be? It working absolutely fine on Premiere pre-2014.2.
Now I open my almost finished sequence, and when I drag the cursor across the sequence, every time it's on a new clip, it freezes for a while. A few seconds. Then that clip plays fine. I move to another shot and it's the same, the video freezes for a while (UI still reacts normally). If I try to just press play, it plays the shots that i already when over, but if there is a new one, the video freezes, sound continues, and I can press stop as many times as I want, it keeps playing.
Once I have finally gone once over every shot, then the video plays absolutely fine. So I guess it has to do with a cache option. But tried cleaning the cache, moving the scratch disk to a different disk (now it's on a internal ssd, should be fast!) but to no avail..
At this point, I feel the last 3 options I have is :
    - finish my current projects, and try an entire new workflow for the following ones, and use something else than the MXF container
    - or, finish my current projects then move to Avid
    - rebuild my entire system to see if that changes anything

  • PSE 7 - video delay

I have Windows Vista 64 bit operating system and the videos on PSE 7 from my Canon SLR often mometarily stop during playback.  I have updated PSE 7.  I contact HP expecting that my new laptop was malfunctioning but was able to view the videos using Windows media player without experiencing any delay.
Any assistance with this would be greatly apreciated.

Which version are you using now? You can't be using PSE 7 on a mac, because there is no PSE 7 for mac. The frame delay problem exists in the mac versions 6 through 10. You can either upgrade to PSE 11 or use a program like the free giffun from stone.com to assemble the gif and set the frame rate.

  • Setting Up Video Delay

Is there a way to set up the software so that you can delay live footage?
Here's what I'd like to do....
I coach volleyball so I would like to set up live video of the players performing skills. It would be set up so the camera would film them and the time delay would allow them to go to a monitor to watch themselves.
I've seen discussions on how to set it up with an older version of Tivo but I would like to use Elements if possible.
    Thanks!

There is hardware and software that will allow you to do what you want. My golf coach uses such. Basically, she is able to record to the HDD (like Adobe OnLocation, part of PrPro's suite), and then allow playback, with Frame-by-Frame shuttle, slo-mo, and even a telestrator to add lines, indicating aspects, like club shaft angle. She can alter the display to include, or remove the actual video, so that one can see just the path of the illustrated club, or shoulder angles, or a combo of both. Her console has a shuttle ball to manually control the speed. Her unit has a built-in thermal printer to give you a hard copy of the Frame, or a sequence of stills of Frames. If interested, I can get the make/model of her unit, which fits into a small suitcase, and has detachable legs to stand it up. Her's runs from a motorcycle battery and works very well. The monitor is somewhat small, but has an adjustable hood so that viewing in bright sunlight is still pretty good. She uses a Canon miniDV tape camera, tethered by FireWire. It is a great teaching aid. She can also upload the video to the miniDV tape, so that one can take it home to review.
I've had ski racing clinics, where similar was utilized, and it is portable enough to get up the mountainside on a snow mobile.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • HD video has choppy playback on timeline

    Equipment:
    New MacPro 2 X 2.93 GHz 6-Core intel Xeon
    12GBs Ram
Nvidia Quadro 4000 2048 MB video card
    Software 10.7.2
Video Card:  Kona 3 with 9.0.3 driver & 9.01 premier plugin
Videodrive:  7200 RPM 2 TB internal (not the system drive)  remaining space about 750 GB
    Adobe CS 5.5 software
I just switched from FCP 7 to CS5.5 including a new computer which I perceive is optimized for CS 5.5.  In playback my audio is choppy and dropping out some of the time, then if I stop and start the payback it will be fine, or sometimes there is no audio.  doesn't seem to be any consistencey in what will happen the next time I start playback.  On the timeline is a 1080i ProRes file I finished in FCP 7, then imported the video & audio file to Premier to make a couple of last minute changes.  Program is 50 minutes long.  I have the sequence setup as Kona 1080i compressed.  I imagine I have missed something very basic here, but don't have a clue what it could be.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thx...Jim Watt

    John,
I don't really think it's applicable in this particular situation.  I have just switched to PP for FCP-7.  All my FCP 7 shows are mastered in ProRes and this last one of course was too and it's the one I had to make a small change in.  I didn't see anything in the post you referred me to that suggests that PP cannot/will not play back proRes material.
At the moment I'm screening DVCPROHD 1080i material and I'm having the same problem with choppy playback/freezes and lost audio in the viewer.  I saw a post that came from Walter Biscardi for audio setup and followed that, which did seem to help a little, but the problem still exists.  This is what i did...
Audio...set preferences in Premier to "built in output" and also set audio mapping to same, set audio hardware to "built in output"  with caches at 1024
set computer preferences audio output to Kona card...
So I think this is some sort of setup that I have missed since I get identical problem with ProRes and DVCPROHD.  Any other sugestions will be most appreciated.  I'll give AJA a call tomorrow if I can't find a fix on the forum.
    thx...jw
