Unfortunate app killed by 10.4.9 :(

One of my most beloved integrated OS X elements is the Dictionary and its Ctrl-Cmd-D shortcut. It's one of those things that you start missing only when you're using a non-Tiger system for work. It's one of the bulletpoints for usability for when I'm showing my computer to potential switchers. And now recently the 10.4.9 update got released. I was quick to install it, but I may not have taken the precations needed for important upgrades like this. Upon restart I have noticed a few things wrong with my system:
- The system volume is way too loud. Even on one bar, it's equal to what was about seven before the update. Discussed here. Since it seems that it's solely up to Apple to fix this easily, I decided to try to live by it.
- The system feels a bit more sluggish than before. Basically, it's more louder than slower, for me, since I have recently bought a good amount of RAM.
- No optical disc would mount at all. DiscImageMounter and Toast worked fine at mounting, but any CD or DVD inserted would stop spinning soon after starting. Later, I re-installed the update (combo, this time) and this problem was fixed.
- And this is the heartbreaker: Dictionary.app, the keyboard command, and its Widget stopped working. The keyboard shortcut could not launch at all, and the widget and app acted as if all words entered were non-existent. One suspicious thing about the application was a yellow warning symbol that stood next to the search field. (I'm guessing that since it exists, someone must know a cure)
As I said, I used the combo updater and some issues were fixed. At first, I thought they all were, since the dictionary was the first thing I tested. It did work, along with the pane and the widget. I went on surfing happily, but the next time I tested it out, it was broken again... This seems to tell me that it's obviously the fault of the buggy update, which I wish isn't the last version of Tiger.
Having read this long story, is there anyone out there who can help me, and possibly others with this problem, out?

Problems arising right after installing a system update are usually the result of some filesystem corruption that should have been fixed first, or not having installed the update properly (e.g. applications running while installing it), or having ignored Apple’s “Important: Please read before installing” warnings, etc.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:

After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the update using the combo installer:

After installing the Combo Update, the computer may restart twice and the first restart may take several minutes. This is normal.

If the problem persists, try doing some cache cleaning in case the problem is caused by some kind of cache corruption. Read the following article for general troubleshooting and cache-cleaning procedures:

In addition to the utilities mentioned there for cache cleaning, you may also consider OnyX or Cache Out X, which are free.

    So after about an hour on the phone with Verizon explaining my dilemma about the phone number and having read another post different topic by an Administrator of Verizon, I obviously missed something in the steps in registering for the VZ Forum/Community.
    Not to mention you have a different pw for billing, pw for login to My VZW and somehow since I was logged in to My VZW already, which as I said you can use your phone number as a UserID, something now I see should not be allowed.I never thought about that, but phone description is not an auto filled area, it is strictly optional.
    And so the End User, is left to fend for themselves and figure out how to unravel this issues, glitches by companies & their web sites.  I have/had the same problem with Qwest and why I now use Verizon, issues with SBC Global and now these issues with VZW.
    Qwest offered Bundle & Save, so I had Wireless, Satellite and Internet...well just after I upgraded my Qwest wireless phone, Qwest decided to drop Wireless and left me with a new phone I could not do anything with and was allowing Qwest to flip over to Verizon.  Qwest Internet Service sucks big time, as my location does not allow fast internet service due to my location, as told me by one of their Tech making a house call.
    So for a year I was paying for something I would never get, as Sales does not know what Tech's know.  However, Qwest keeps sending mail advertisements saying Up to 7Mbps, or Fiber Optic  Up to 20Mbps, key words are Up To, so if you are paying for 7Mbps and receiving 2.2 Mbps, that is consider Up to the 7, which the 2.2 is unstable and your connection drops frequently.  So the Tech downgraded me to 1.5Mbps, otherwise I would of had to pay dearly if I made the change breaking the contract.
    So yes we live and learn, even at age 63...I can go on and on how HP, Kodak and others have ripped the consumer off, in this case me.  On my 5th system board for the HP dv6000 and now there is a class action lawsuit.
    To little too late...Appreciate the reply and not much I can do about the number, once its out there its any ones and I only know that scenario and unwanted calls too well.  I have several e-mail accounts, am a webmaster with umpteen web sites, and work on & servicing computers, Internet, Networking...my first Smartphone HTC Incredible and not liking how it works...thanks again, appreciate your time in replying and pointing out a Big Mistake ha ha....DroidFireDoc

  • App Killer - still useful with Droid 2.2 OS update?

    I've been hearing mixed reviews on whether or not App Killer is a help or hindrance with the 2.2 OS.  Does anyone have some information on it?

    My personal opinion is not to use a task killer. Reason being it will kill your battery if automatically set to kill programs.
    What happens is TK will shut down programs and many of those programs will reopen, then again TK will kill the programs and the programs will reopen. It is an endless loop that drains a battery. Froyo does very well  with memory management if left alone to do its job.

    Hey guys. I have a quick question. May sound dumb or may have already been asked but i can't find it. The question being, is it safe to use an application killer or not. I understand that some programs must stay running (have done that much research.) But it is safe to have an app killer and kill simple apps such as facebook, myspace, yahoo messenger, etc. I am currently using the advance task killer free version. I just don't want to do anything to harm anything such as the phones functioning. Thanks in advance for the help.

    It all depends on what you want out of your phone. If you want long battery life, then don't install a task killer. If you want faster application response (from already running apps, i.e. Internet browser) that dynamically require more and more memory as you use it, then install a task killer and configure it to only stop apps that don't auto-start. I've found that some apps like mail, gmail, browser, games, run much snappier if the underlying OS isn't busy having to stop other apps and free other resources. Ironically, none of these issues are new, Mainframe, host based, virtual, and cloud computing developers have been dealing with shared resource issues for decades. Silly android devs, they think they've discovered something new.

    What shaould my available memory be after using the app killer on the X?  I have seen it as low as 88m and spike all the way up to 228m?

    Depending on the one you are using, Advance Task Killer has a option under the settings menu...

    I know I've seen this mentioned on this fourm before, but I cannot find it.  There is a build in app killer on the Incredible somewhere and I need the directions.  Thanks!
    Also, does anyone know if there is Tip Calculator on the Incredible, or do I need to find an app for that...

    Task killers are a waste imo.  Plenty of articles out recommending against them with the benefits being almost negligible and they typically end up causing more problems.  The android OS will manage the memory and close apps as needed.  If you're having battery life issues, look into adjusting the refresh settings of the app. Phone lagging? Look at the apps you're using and try to find alternatives.  Task managers aren't the end all be all to poorly designed or misbehaving apps.  Using it to cut down on steps required  to close a misbehaving app here or there? Setup a shortcut to manage applications or running services on you home screen and that's one less app you have using memory.
    As for the running services, those are associated with apps that need constant connection and run in the background.  Stopping everything there could technically improve your battery life, but then you won't be getting emails, google talk notifications, etc.

  • App killer for pre?

    I just got my Palm Pre (after my beloved Palm Treo fell apart )....  when I read the reviews and saw how many people were complaining about battery life, I wasn't worried because I don't use my phone all day.  However, OMG, this Palm Pre sucks the life out of its battery!    
    I was told that if I got an app killer, my battery life may improve.  Anyone try this?  If so, where can I get a good app killer?

  • Using some GPS apps kills my cellphone provider's signal?

    Hello Guys,
    I bought a brand new iphone 4s 16gb and recently I have a problem that has turned very annoying. Let me give you a background story:
    I downloaded "Waze" app and worked fine for over a week. After that it suddenly started to tell me that, it couldn't find my location and that the GPS was not working. When I looked up to the status of my provider's signal (top left corner) I realized that it was being reseted every 20 seconds or so, making me unable to have a solid connection with my provider. This meant that I was either unable to use internet or making phone calls. I call my service provider to check if the issue was on their part, but they told me my iphone was forcing a connection because the GPS signal was not found. I isolate the issue and realize that Waze is the one breaking my signal and making the gps go crazy. I even try using the MAPS app and it doesn't happen, if of course, I don't use Waze first. So my question is: "Is there a work around for this issue? or is some issue with GPS over IOS 5?"

    Thanks for the quick answer. I checked the option on my phone but it is off. I also have to mention that once I use Waze, and try to use Maps the behaviour continues. Nevertheless if I turn on Airplane mode, in order to kill the signals completly, and then turning it back to off it starts working again with Maps. I suspect its an icompatibility with Waze and Iphone 4s.

  • Creative cloud app kills windows 8 on install or update.

    I searched in vain for any support or way to contact support from Adobe. Every link just goes round in circles and ends up with the forums.  So as far as I can tell, Adobe offer zero support for the creative cloud product I have just purchased.
    Anyway, just in case that any Adobe staff read these forums, and want to take note of major problems, the adobe cloud application (dont know what it is or does), which is required for some reason in order to install lightroom and photoshop (unfortunately), always crashes, and takes down windows 8.1 with it.
    I always disable it in startup, and I dont want it to slow down my boot up for zero gain.
    Today I realised that windows 8 has no desktop pdf reader.   So I thought I would fire up the adobe creative app thing, to see if there was an option to dowload an adobe desktop product for reading pdf.
    When it launched, it said I had to update.  It updated for a bit, then "blue screened" windows.  Not the old blue screen we know and love from windows 3.1 to windows 7, but a new blue screen reserved only for windows 8.  Basically, the updater simply kills all your running apps, no matter if you were in the middle of working on something, and gives a compeetly  blue screen, except I see a small minimised Skype bar in the bottom left.  All my desktop items - gone.  Windows bar at the bottom - gon.  Start menu - gone.  Windows start button on the keyboard?  Dead.
    So the only option is to pull the power plug, which can seriously dammage the HD etc.
    Nice one Adobe. This is why I hate installing the bug filled bloatware which too many companies fill your machine.
    I dont expect any help, but at least I tried to give feedback.

    Just to confirm: both, after installing, and after updating the "Adobe Creative App", everything on the desktop disappears, including the desktop background, and you are left with a solid blue screen (very similar to a blue screen of death, just without the error message), and a small window with skype compressed into the smallest possible area (just he minimize button and the word skype) in the bottom left.  I waited at least 5 minutes.  This is on a machine with a new and empty Curcial M550 SSD (very very fast), and a core i7 quad core 2.7GHz.  No key board action has any effect, except Ctrl-Alt-del does eventually allow you to shut down (which I could not find the first time I had this problem so had to litterally pull the power out of the back).
    It is a brand new machine with nothing but a fresh install of windows 8 from the Lenovo Factory installation disks, and utilities like skype, chrome, firefox, tortoise git, and java installed. 
    I have now uninstalled the creative clound app, as I cant afford to have it damage my laptop or windows installation.

  • Deploying an app kills all sessions on server.

    We have a problem using OC4J Standalone, where whenever you deploy an app from JDeveloper, all sessions on the server are killed, even for other apps.
    We use 9.0.3, but I have tested this in 9.0.4 with the same results. Is there a setting somewhere that effects this?
    Any help whatsoever would be appreciated.

  • Why my flex mobile apps kill by android system ?

    After i press home button and i try to open others apps such as facebook, somehow my apps has been killed by android and i have to reopen again my mobile apps.
    Any idea how to prevent my apps be killed by android if it is running behind ?

    Adobe's attitude is not only incredibly insulting and ignorant, it is also short-sighted, particularly considering the top android handsets would actually allow their apps to be more flexible and powerful as they have more RAM at their disposal and the very popular Galaxy Note series would be a perfect device with its integral stylus. This is not acceptable and makes me reconsider staying with my CC subscription. I guess it is time to start looking for adobe alternatives or at the very least demand a discount in our subscription as we are unable to use a large chunk of the subscription portfolio.

  • Dock icons disappeared after the Dock app killed via terminal

    Hello, I'm running the new OS X Mavericks on a late 09' Mac Mini, my problem started when I had finished updating Grageband.
    When the update was over, from some reason the Grageband icon became invisible, so i tried using the "killall Dock" commend via terminal to restart the dock.
    And it took considerably longer then usual, and when it came back up, most of the icons became invisible too,  well, as I'm pretty sure it's a one time bug and it will be resolved when I'll restart the machine I'll relog to my user, is that happened to anyone else? and is there anything I can do to prevent this problem in the future?

    Ive added a screen shot. Can't drag and drop the trash can....:-/
    Looked up the cmd and now I have a properly working dock. Didnt have to drag any apps out either

  • How do you exit without backing all the way out or using an app killer?

    There is no "X", there is no "exit" under "menu". I have been using Dolphin which has just about everything you need when you click the menu button.

    Like most Android apps (including the built-in Browser, Maps, and GMail apps), Firefox does not have an exit button. Android automatically closes apps in the background when it needs their resources.
