Ungroup groups

When building an epub in CS6 I used the group method to keep images and captions together (upwards of 250 illustrations). The groups are anchored as inline objects. ID CC introduced a nasty little bug which rasterizes groups without allowing an option. This destroys caption text. One "fix" is to increase the size and weight of my caption para style but this is ugly. The other way is to save the document as an idml and open it in CS6. OK, but you then lose any CC advantages. Is there any way to ungroup all? The one at a time method involves changing each anchored group to an above-line object, releasing the anchor, ungrouping, re-anchoring and relocating the image and caption frames separately (not an option for 250).

We rasterize Inline positioned Anchored Objects in order to maintain their position relative to the text where they are anchored - the only HTML object which can be a child of a Pargagraph is an image.
Above Line and Custom positioned Anchored Objects are treated differently - they are removed from the Paragraph and placed after it (or before it if the anchor TextIndex is the start of the paragraph) and so we are not forced to rasterize them and turn them into an image.
Until we give you an explicit control to say "move this Inline position Anchored Object outside the Paragraph" you only choice to prevent automatic rasterization is to change the Anchored Object position which I believe you can do with Find/Change Object, or if you've faithfully applied an Object Style you can just edit that.

There may be a script already that does this but I haven't found it yet.
Is there a simple line in a script I could have it ungroup everything in a document?
It seems like it should be easy enough to do it.

I cannot test the VB script, but:
my VB code will ungroup all groups - because after ungrouping grouped group myDocument.Groups.Count will be increased so this loop will end when all groups will be ungrouped
but it should be modified - to prevent crash when Group is in Text as Anchored/Inline graphics and it should check if all remaining groups are as Anchored/Inline graphics - then loop should be ended

How to find ungrouped contacts?

Is there a simple method to finding all the ungrouped contacts in my Address Book at once? I'd like to put them in one location, drop them all into a group and then delete the "ungrouped" group... if that makes sense Thanks for any feedback.

Anybody? Anybody? Is this not possible to do... find ungrouped contacts? I have searched the forums without luck but find it hard to believe it can't be done. Any help welcome

An old web designer who's confused...

Hi all,
I'm a long-time web and graphic designer, having started when
Flash was in version 2 and Dreamweaver wasn't even thought
possible. Pixel spacers and nested tables were (and actually, still
are!) my basic method of site build.
Now that I've installed CS4, my world's a bit upside-down...
no more ImageReady, and everything is CSS based. I know CSS is now
a necessity (I understand the text styling side of it)... but as
for layouts...
Can someone confirm this process for me? I believe now things
go:
1. design website in Photoshop, present to client as single
image
2. take design into Fireworks and create slices (as per
ImageReady) and ALSO set up CSS
3. take HTML file and... do something with it in Dreamweaver.
So what is Dreamweaver used for now? Can Fireworks be used to
CSS code the entire site? At what point in the process do you set
up the overall site structure (traditionally I just work with
single pages)?
This is one of the toughest transitions I've gone through in
my career. I suppose I want to get the basics right before I throw
myself into the tutorials.

Things are much improved in CS4, however - for example -
symbols and
grouped objects will be flattened when you save as PSD -
simply because
PS can't understand the assets. You would have to ungroup
groups to keep
the elements editable, and break apart symbols. Likewise, PS
has no
comparable feature to Pages, so you will need to export each
page as a
separate PSD file.
Vector shapes, vector and bitmap masks, and text are all
editible within
PS (CS3 and CS4). Certain vector fills and blend modes and
some styles
will not transfer over to PS either, because the effect
doesn't exist in PS.
Remember these two applications are not the same. If they
were, there
wouldn't be a need for both, so certain things - at this
point anyway -
just won't translate going from FW to PS. For what it's
worth, IMO that
is a problem on the PS side, not FW. PS still cannot open an
FW PNG file
without flattening the entire document. The FW engineers have
worked
VERY hard to improve integration when importing PSD's into
FW, however.
Many updates have been made to ensure that a PSD design
opened in FW
looks much as it does in PS.
I have no idea how the file will be handled in IR.

Trouble making a clipping mask in Photoshop

I have the following set up:
I would like to make a clipping mask out of all of the objects above the "Text" layer (so that all of the stuff from the above layers is only applied to the letters), however I am struggling. For one, when I go to ungroup "Group 1" it changes the complexion of the graphics and makes it darker for some reason. Also, when I merge the layers above "text" I get the following:

NM, I found the answer:
Place all the layers above "Text" into a group (it's okay to nest groups).
Ctl/Cmd-click on the Layers Panel thumbnail of "Text" to load it as a selection.
With your new "master group" targeted, click the "New Layer Mask" icon in the Layers Panel.
This will create a layer mask on the group that applies the group content only to the non-transparent pixel on the Text layer, which I think is what you're trying to do.

Beginner Illustrator issues dealing with dividing shape- frustrated?

Ok, so I'm trying to learn how to use Illustrator for specifically fashion.
I'm following this book to learn the basics and i'm going through each step.
I made this basic shaped dress, added a neckline with a dashed line..then moved on to make a straight line at the waist. We are then told to marquee over a piece of the dress and the path line we just made for the waist..and then divide.
Once you divide, the fill box should have a question mark, it says. After that we can ungroup and the top of the dress and bottom should separate.
Well it doesn't and it's really irritating me. The pathline for the waist blends in with the fill color of the dress so it turns from a black thin line to blending in with the pink dress. [The book, at this step, has the waist line still as black].
Then when i try to ungroup...ungroup option doesn't show. It just says 'group'. So basically when i try to move the dress in hopes that it still divided, the dress moves and the only thing that remains is the neckline that i mentioned previously.
=\ I don't understand why my pathline blends in with the fill color of the dress. [even when i change the view to outline vs preview it doesn't even show up. only the outline of the dress and the neckline. its as if the pathline for the waist just erased]. I also don't understand why an ungroup option doesn't appear. uggh.

A comparison:
I just tried with 5 target rectangles, some of them crossing one another, and an open cutting path crossing them. With Object>Path>Divide Objects Below I got 10/40 ungrouped rectangles as expected, without their messing with one another. With Pathfinder>Divide I got (in this case) 18/100 grouped rectangles, everything being cut to pieces.
Correspondingly, with a sixth cutting rectangle I got 15/60 ungrouped rectangles, and 29/144 grouped ones.
As it appears, if you only want the top object to cut anything, Pathfinder will make a mess.
Two other comparisons:
A rectangle and an open path that cuts into it from one side: One 7 point path in both cases.
A rectangle and an open path that cuts through it: Two 4 point paths, ungrouped/grouped.
As mentionned earlier, in all cases, only the cutting path needs to be selected with Object>Path>Divide.
There may be some difference in behaviour, depending on her age/maturity.

Charts with large datasets?

I'm writing an application that requires graphing of multi-series sql statements over moderately large datasets. Think 45-90k data points or so.
I've noticed that with datasets larger than 5k or so, the flash charts eat a lot of cpu time when rendering and I haven't gotten flash charts to display 15k data points appropriately. I get a message about flash having a long running script.
Does anybody have suggestions for how to display 50,000+ data point charts in apex? Is there a recommended tool to integrate with apex that would create the chart server-side as a graphic and then push the graphic to the client? Also, if possible I would like to call this tool directly from DB jobs to push graphs out to people via email on a recurring basis.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I originally worked exclusively in Mac. It was the only game in town at one time. I have been working on higher end Windows-based workstations for the past 10 years or so (I also do some video production). Apple products are 'kool,' just not cost-effective. I am currently running Win7 on a dual-quad core with 8GB Ram and 3+TB high-speed storage.
I used DeltaGraph for several years but their PostScript was version 1.0. I had a lot of problems with the files, such as not ungrouping grouped objects, font problems and difficulties applying newer effects -- even after re-saving to current version AI. At version 5, I querried Red Rock regarding upgrade of PS support but they said it was not in their plans. I also found that setting up some plots was terrifically complicated in DG. It was quicker to set up simple geometry in layered plots in Illustrator. I have not looked at DG 6 but will check on their PS status.
I have not looked at importing Excel via PDF. I often do test plots from the source worksheets for reference in Excel but have never considered the results to be workable or usable in a published format. I will take another look at Excel per your suggestion.
It sure would be great if AI charting were a bit more robust and reliable.

Applescript to delete from selected layer and page

Hi,
This is part of a bigger script, but this is where I am having the problem. Hopefully very easy to solve, but driving me mad.
I want to delete a text box from the active page only, and only from one layer.
I can get it to work on one layer, but all pages. And on one page, but all layers.
Could someone please help me write the line to select both active page and layer "slug".

go into the loop and set proper label to each item inside group:
for (var k; k < oPageItems[j].length; k++)

assuming your oPageItems[j] is a group indeed.

When I ungroup a group, it disappears only to be found on another page (I assume it is the page I grouped it on).
This has only just started happening. Is it an update, or a preference I have changed?

@Lkretschmar – you assumed right.
The ungrouped objects are on the same spread where you once grouped them, if:
1. The new feature "Ungroup Remembers Layers" is checked while ungrouping
2. You dragged the group from spread to spread
3. You dragged-duplicated the group from spread to spread
Note 1: Copy/paste a group to a different spread will not invoke the bug.
Note 2: The menu item "Ungroup Remembers Layers" lives in the Layers Panel. It is checked by default.

Group/Ungroup in Pages version 1.2 not working

In Pages version 1.2 I have a problem using group/ungroup.
When I create two objects, for example circles, selected them both an touch one object to get the popup menu, there is no group option available.
In both Numbers and Keynote this option is available. Am I the only one or are on this forum more people with the same issue en possibly a solution?

Your right, Pages doesn't have the same grouping option as Keynote and Numbers. You can send this oddity to Apple as a feedback:

Retain layers with group/ungroup CS5

I'm hoping that I've missed a check box hidden somewhere in illustrator.
I work with complex figures and often use group to move sections around and align panels. Unfortunately, this process flattens all the objects into a single layer; which is ok when I'm moving the group, but NOT OK when I need to ungroup and edit the objects in separate layers again.
For example:
Graphic overlay, text, highlight behind text.
One use is when I'm making a template, distributing the artwork to fit available space, and then going back in and updating the text and highlights, etc.
I'm dealing with too many objects to manually reassign the layers after ungrouping.

No. This feature has never existed in AI and still doesn't today. Layer affinity is not an attribute of the object, it's just the otehr way around, so any object that is grouped with ones on otehr layers is gobbled up into the dominant layer, which is usually the one the first object belonged to.
