Ungroup text in Illustrator?

What is the purpose of ungrouping text in Illustrator? Once the text has been ungrouped, can it be reverted back to text?
Thanks.

superstar,
Presuming you mean Type>Create Outlines, there may be a number of purposes, some of which may be fulfilled by using Effects; Outlining is sometimes done unneeded.
Among purposes are avoidance of editability and/or licence agreement violation.
When performing any destructive/irreversible act, you should keep a copy of what you have (by then had, so you will still have it).

  • Is there a way to Ungroup Text?

    Hello:
    I would like to know if there is a way to Ungroup Text.
    In other words ... can I type a word such as 'Love' and then make each letter a separate ... um, Object?
    I have used many different key word phrases in the manual to try and find the answer to no avail.
    I've read about Grouping and Ungrouping, about Text/Fonts and other such things. I suppose, I just don't know what else to read up on.
    I thought that maybe I could convert the Text to an Object but that doesn't seem to be the case.
    In Inkscape I go to: Path and click on: Object to Path and then I go to: Ungroup.
    However, I do not know what Object to Path equals in Illustrator or even what key words to use in the Illy manual so that I can read something that could help me figure it out.
    I sure do appreciate your time and assistance.
    Thank you,
    Kara

    hello Larry,
    Thank you for your response. I appreciate your time.
    Guess what? I tried one more thing ... I dunno why I didn't try it as it seems it was pretty much the only thing I didn't try.
    I Selected the word and then went to: Type > Create Outlines and then I went to Object > Ungroup and it worked.
    However, I am not sure what Create Outlines actually does and so I will certainly be reading up on that tomorrow.
    I am going to go check out your link because more than likely your info is the better and/or correct way to do what I need.
    I'll return after I check out your link.
    Thanks again!
    WOW!! What a GREAT website full of Awesome resources, scripts etc.!! thanks so much for sharing it with me
    I'm a bit too tired to ferret out the info re: my question tonight but I certainly will as soon as I can tomorrow.
    Well, hope you're having a nice day/night.

We have on all macs the same system, os 10.8.3, cs6 and UTC4. And of course we`re using exactly the same font....

  • A problem highlighting/selecting text in Illustrator CS3

    In several instances I can't highlight text to copy or to edit, other times it works fine. If I click the radio button for the text in layers (other layers may be locked to prevent accidental selection), the baselines appears and I should be able to highlight the text, but I can't. If I highlight some other unaffected area of text successfully (unlocked layers), sometimes it will allow me to select the problem text directly after. Then it will go back to being a problem, why?

    I'm using the general text tool, I've locked the other sublayers to avoid accidentally selecting those items. Then I click the radio button on the sublayer I wish to edit or copy, which reveals the baselines. Then if I click within that object to highlight text with the cursor, the text tool creates a new textbox/sublayer and does not highlight the text I intended.

  • Muse 3.1 crashes often upon copy and paste 'text'from illustrator

    Experience persistent crashes in Muse 3.1 whenever I copy and paste text from illustrator to  Muse.

    I would use the older version so you can continue working while troubleshooting continues in CC2014, if you haven't uninstalled it yet (and it didn't also lose the ability to copy/paste).
    Have you tried any of the usual suspects?

  • Can i copy text from illustrator to indesign and retain attributes

    Hello,
    I received an illustrator cs3 file that I need to convert to InDesign cs3.
    Is there a way to copy the type that is set in illustrator to indesign, while retaining the attributes. I need to be able to make changes on the type in indesign, so converting type to outlines isn't an option.
    Thanks!
    T

    Even though you can change your InDesign preferences for Clipboard Handling to allow formatted information to be pasted into InDesign from other programs, unfortunately Illustrator still won't allow you paste in text with formatting. This is due to how Illustrator and InDesign handle text differently. Even if you copy the text from Illustrator and paste it into a program like Word, which has a lot of different ways to handle formatted text, Illustrator just treats text differently than other Adobe applications.

  • Editing text using illustrator

    We always used to be able to correct text using illustrator, having the font of course, however now when saving illustrator comes up with 'an unknown error has occured'.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers

    GreatWhite wasn't clear about how he/she was using Illustrator. Many people think they can open a PDF file directly in Illustrator to edit it. While this may work in certain limited situations, it can seriously alter the file, switch fonts or encoding, throw out color profiles, etc. As Dov Isaac, Adobe principal scientist has noted many times in these user forums, Illustrator was never intended for this. I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that that was what GreatWhite implied.
    Yes, Illustrator can be selected as an Object editor with the Touchup Object tool to edit individual objects.

  • How to outline text in illustrator scripting

    I want to create storke in text in illustrator scripting and found one method too createoutline(),But How i used this method for text outline.

    var docRef = app.activeDocument;
    var colorForText = new CMYKColor();
        colorForText.black = 0;
        colorForText.cyan = 0;
        colorForText.magenta = 0;
        colorForText.yellow = 0;
    var colorForTextOutline = new CMYKColor();
    colorForTextOutline.black = 100;
    colorForTextOutline.cyan = 0;
    colorForTextOutline.magenta = 0;
    colorForTextOutline.yellow = 0;
    var outlineSize = 5;
    for (i = docRef.textFrames.length-1; i >=0; i--) {
        for (j = 0; j < docRef.textFrames[i].words.length; j++){
            docRef.textFrames[i].words[j].filled = true;
            docRef.textFrames[i].words[j].fillColor = colorForText;
    var outline = docRef.textFrames[i].duplicate(docRef, ElementPlacement.PLACEATEND);
        for (h = 0; h < outline.words.length; h++) {
            outline.words[h].filled = true;
            outline.words[h].fillColor = colorForTextOutline;
            outline.words[h].stroked = true;
            outline.words[h].strokeColor = colorForTextOutline;
            outline.words[h].strokeWeight = outlineSize;
    //docRef.textFrames[i].createOutline();
    //outline.createOutline();
    createOutline(); converts live text to outlines, if you are trying to just create a stroke you have to go about it a different way. This script will take the text and copy it, put it in back, and put a stroke behind on the behind text so it has an effect similar to an offset path. The way I have it leaves the text live, if you were wanting to convert the text to outlines as well I left that part written in the bottom of the script. There is also a StrokeJoin parameter as well.
    Hope this helps!

  • RTL text in Illustrator CS 6?

    I need to input Hebrew text in Illustrator. I have the requisite fonts installed, but I can't get the text to input from right to left. Oddly, I have no trouble doing this in InDesign. In case it is relevant, here is a screenshot of the character panel.

    Normally you would need the MENA verion to do this. But you could also try the plugin scribeDOOR.

  • Linking Text to Illustrator Document

    Hello, I'm relatively new to Illustrator and have just downloaded CS2. We plan to use it to create a layout with a large body of text in it, which will be subject to unknown changes. I was wondering if it is possible to link a text document to a text box in Illustrator, the effect being such that if a line of text changes in the word processing document, the linked text in Illustrator will reflect those changes. I have researched this via Help and the forum but do not have a clear sense of whether it is possible. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

    Not that easy it is. You could go the route via AI's Variables Palette, but notice that many people do not consider it as an easy way.
    Have you already thought about linked .pdf files which are created out of your .txt files whenever the text changes?
    Also, perhaps this task is better done in InDesign which has better tools for these kinds of jobs.

  • I can't expand text in illustrator

    I expand text in Illustrator all the time but can't seem to do it now.  I also can't see the anchor points.
    I've rebooted my PC twice with no luck.
    Any advice?

    ghnedak,
    Ah, then it was a temporary corruption, see items 1) and 2) on the following list.
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    If possible/applicable, you should save curent artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • I can't copy a text based illustrator page to indesign

    Hi i have the tutorials running of illustrator and indesign. I have just created a page of text boxes in illustrator and now need to copy or place this into my indesign file but cant seem to do it.
    I either get unformatted text or a plug in error in indesign.
    I know this is possible because I am copying what I have seen done before but cant make it work.
    Urgent help needed as will miss deadline as a result.
    Many thanks

    Unfortunately, it's not possible to copy anything other than unformatted text from Illustrator to InDesign. The two applications have completely different, non-compatible text engines.
    However, save your page as an Illustrator (AI) file. Then choose File > Place. If you turn on Show Import Options, you can choose which artboards are placed. Note that the AI file will not be editable.

  • CS4 Problem getting text from Illustrator over to Photoshop.

    What a mess and why is  this so difficult. I finally figured out how to create my text on a curve and leave the letters going straight up and down. So I am trying to paste or drag and drop over to my bottle in Photoshop but what happens is that the text is in a clear area But then it creates a white box around that so I can't see my bottle. I have a lot of bottles I need to change the names on and no time to reshoot and knock them all out. Help please!!! I am going to try and attach images again but when I tried in  the Illustrator forum... the load button was greyed out.
    Now on top of it, I am trying to create an image to attach... and it's doing even more crazy stuff. I created an image with the full bottle on L and what is supposed to be the full bottle on the R = only instead for some reason.... my text is coming over from Illustrator with an additional white box blocking most my bottle... then on top of it.... I tried to just type in what was going on and then if I rasterize the text OR I just try to save.... it created a new black box blocking the bottom 1/2... now what do I do??? This is really a mess!!!!

    OK. The bottle on the L is what the bottle is supposed to look like.... minus the black box on the bottom. The L bottle is placed there in photoshop just to show what it is supposed to look like. Then the other layer had the bottle on the R or what is supposed to be the full bottle that I am trying to get my Eyelash Recovery text onto that one on that layer.
    The bottle on the R is the problem. The white box is the entire area around the small area of the bottle being shown. Yes, trying to bring just the text Eyelash Recovery over from Illustrator = it created the white box all by itself. (Create Outlines did not help at all)
    Note. I created the words Eyelash Recovery in text on a circle in Illustrator and then tried to drag and drop AND I tried to copy/paste into Illustrato = both ways. Both failed and created everything that is white around the R bottle that only shows the small area of the bottle. Anything around the small window of the bottle = which is actually a transparent area around the text Eyelash Recovery that allows the bottle on the L to show thru. So it came over as a small area of transparent window with the text in it (not centered as you can see) AND a white box around that window that I could not get rid of.
    But then, for some reason, it then also wanted to created the black blox on bottom out of the clear blue = where that came from I do not know.
    So I created the text Eyelash Recovery in Illustrator on the oval and placed it in position on the oval using the text on path tool. I then used the type > skew to get the text to bet straight up and down instead of curving into the oval. Then I tried 2 ways. 1 was to copy/paste into Photoshop on top of the bottle and the other was to drag and drop. It wanted to place it as pixels. So I allowed it to paste as pixels. And I allowed it to apply. In the layers palette however, it showed as a vector smart object = ???
    Then I tried to rasterize that layer which now said it wanted to rasterize the smart object (which I did not 1. place OR 2. drag and drop as a smart object).
    For some reason, instead of only coming over as the Eyelash Recovery text, it came over with just a small transparent window (which you can see on the L side above AND it created the rest as a white box around that that obliterated the rest of the image. Yes, I could move the Eyelash Recovery text and the transparent window around to show diff. parts of the bottle but only this amount as seen above. But I could not get rid of the white around the transparent window to see the bottle below in full and to place my Eyelash Recovery text.
    Then on top of it... for some reason, when I rasterized that layer, it created the black box you see on the bottom of the image above and there was no way to get rid of either the white area OR the black box area at bottom
    A mess?? Yes.

  • Random character appears when outlining text in Illustrator CS4 !!!

    Hi All,
    Firstly, any help would be greatly appreciated.
    My problem is shown below, I have an artwork containing live text produced in Illustrator CS4 on a Mac. On outlining the file for forwarding to prepress, a random "D" appears at the end of one of the sentences. I have been unable to find any reason for this. The "D" is not visible when the document is viewed in Outline Mode, it is not visible when hidden characters are shown, it cannot be selected using the text cursor, it appears regardless of what typeface is used, and there are no effects or transparencies applied to the text. Obviously this is of great concern, we produce artwork using live fonts, and on approval outline the files and forward them to a prepress bureau, the result of random characters appearing on printed material could prove very costly.
    If the Illustrator document is saved as a CS2 compatible file from CS4, opened in CS2 and outlined this does not occur.
    Thanks,

    Same thing here, but in CS3. Files came from a client, but appear to have been created and saved in CS3 also. I couldn't fix it with CS5.
    In our case, it's a phantom W that sits on its own line before another W. No hard return, no soft return, no spaces, nothing shows with invisibles on. You can select it (using the shift and arrow keys) and format it, and the changes show up when you outline it. Select it and type a different character, and it winds up on the next line next to the "real" W, as it should. Double-clicking the word selects the phantom letter as well.
    Type is area type, and it's rotated 180° (packaging). Original fonts were Trajan Pro and UniversLTStd.
    Anyone?

  • Text in Illustrator CS6 displays the red plus sign but there is no overset text. How can I remove?

    I have some text blocks in Illustrator CS 6 that display the red plus sign that indicates overset text but there is no overset text. It occurs in files that were created with earlier versions of Illustator and now we are reworking them. It can't be deleted. I have cut the text in the box and pasted it into a new text box to no avail. It is not a screen artifact. I have tried copying everything in the file and pasting it into a new file and the little red plus sign comes along. It doesn't print, of course, but is driving me crazy...

    I just tried, but the text is point type, not area type, so expanding the box makes the type bigger and doesn’t show extra space that might  be there. Looking at the hidden characters doesn’t show any extra returns. I also have a few of these plus signs that seem to be completely disembodied, just floating in space apart from any visible text. Thanks for your suggestion, though.
