Ungrouping an imported pdf into Illustrator

Is there a way to ungroup the elements of an imported pdf in Illustrator 6? Do you have to change the settings in Adobe Acrobat first to allow the elements to import individually rather than a group? Thank you.

Angie,
You should be able to Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+G to Ungroup once it is in Illy. If there is a Clipping Mask or something blocking the way, you may release that. You can see it in the Layers palette.
Illustrator 6
The one from 1996 or the slightly newer one called CS6/16?

  • Import pdf in illustrator

We have a problem i cannot solve. One of the members of the company uses illustrator to import pdf files. Those pdf files are blueprints. After reinstalling his pc, he now has a issue with it. When importing pdf in illustrator, it makes the lines very thick compared to the original. All lines need to be manualy resized so it looks like the original again. Anyone know how that thickness is calculated and where it may go wrong?

    @Elwinh
If you use Illustrator´s File > Open (to open the PDF) instead of placing the PDF (via File > Place) to an already opened document....Do you see such problem?

  • Have updated to yosemite and now can't import tiffs into illustrator

Have updated to yosemite and now can't import tiffs into illustrator. Help!

    sued,
It is known that there are CS4/Yosemite issues.
For your issue, you may try to save your TIFF as a Photoshop .eps file and import that.
    Or a rollback to Mavericks.

  • Import PDF into Framemaker 7?

    Greetings
Using FrameMaker 7 in Windows XP.
I have some 11 × 17 drawings (created in AutoCad) that I receive in PDF format. They are high quality line-drawings. When I zoom in they are of high quality, the print menu shows them as 200dpi and the print quality is very good.
I need to import them into Framemaker but when I do, they come in at what is clearly NOT high quality. The notes can't be read and the like. I've tried opening them in Photoshop (low quality), I've tried doing Save As.. and choosing JPG (low quality).  I even tried saving as RTF.. same thing.
Ultimately, what I want is to bring the high quality pdf image into Framemaker, but it's not retaining the quality.
I've seen some suggestions in the forum, but none that seem to address this situation.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Solon

The "200dpi" was something I observed at some point, possibly when I had copied/pasted into Photoshop, I'd have to look at it again. When these paste to Framemaker, or are saved as RTF, or I use the Acrobat tool for 'grabbing' images (Sorry, don't remember the name), they look AND print like 72dpi or something. I can't read the notes and callouts, so I can't use them.
    Solon,
Arnis is definitely correct, there shouldn't be any "dpi" applicable with a CAD PDF. Should be vector, although "resolution independent" is often not completely true, since many CAD apps convert curves (bezier, spline) to polylines consisting of many straight segements.
I say Auto-Cad because in the lower-right corner, with other document information, it says "Auto-Cad - No Manual Changes" and I know we have people who use Auto-Cad.. perhaps it was "UG" ... apparently another drawing program.
I can zoom and zoom and zoom.. but I didn't zoom to the end of the earth. If they're vector, they'll never lose resolution, right?
If it's vector, should I be able to open them in Illustrator? (I recall being unable to, but I've tried so many things I may not have tried Illustrator)
AutoCAD and UG (= Unigraphics) are able to create vector output. Yes, you should be able to open such a file in Illustrator.
I don't scale them to fit pages, I get them as 11 × 17 (I turned on the rulers to confirm). Though if I print one and it prints on 8.5 × 11, it's a delightfully clear drawing. Better readability than if I put the image in Frame or save as RTF then print on 11 × 17.
I'm beginning to suspect that you're right in the 'bad PDF' idea..   I was surprised that I couldn't open one in Frame.
All the things you describe sound like a well-known problem: Are you trying to print on a non-PostScript printer? These are exactly the symptoms:
    - Acrobat prints PDFs clearly, because Acrobat itself rasterizes images for output on non-PS printers.
    - FrameMaker prints 72dpi preview images, because EPS (and converted PDF) images are only correctly interpreted by a PS printer driver
    - Doing anything image related using RTF is a bad, bad idea in any case. Regarding vector graphic it's a bad, bad, bad idea
I'll be back at work tomorrow morning, I'll check a couple of things out. One person has suggested I get a copy of a program that'll translate the DWG file (I have access, if I need it) to other formats.
So, my question now is if it IS Vector, will I be able to zoom the PDF in acrobat and basicaly never lose resolution? (I always thought that once you PDF it you lose the zoom capability).
If a PDF is vector, zoom capability is preserved. Illustrator opens PDF and DWG, which gives you control over line weights and colors. Better than doing it in Acrobat. Anyway, a placed vector PDF in FrameMaker 7.x should work, but is only printed correctly when using a PS printer or the Adobe PDF printer. Same with EPS. One bug with PDFs in FM7: Black/greyscale PDFs appears on *all* four color separations.

  • Import PSD into Illustrator CS4 Mac Yosemite

Does anybody know how to fix the problem of importing PSD files into Illustrator CS4?
I am using the new OS X Yosemite 10.10.
Illustrator wants to tell me that PSD would be an unknown file format.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Peter

A work around is saving your psd files as pdf files instead. You can then open them in Illustrator.

  • Importing PDF into Indesign

Is it possible to import PDf documents into the current version of Adobe Indesign ? I am currently testing the software and was wondering if it would be possible to import around 50 of my already published PDF docs to work on it and redesign it with Indesign ?
    Thank you in advance.

Hi @plummerdesign and @MasterStudios - indeed, it is a crying shame our website does not work in IE and they are looking into this. Thank you. We do not have a demo for several reasons and can understand your point. We do have numerous forms of detailed video demsontrations on PDF to InDesign via PDF2DTP here and we have some awesome testiominals from graphic arts industry experts, Frank Romano, Michael Jahn, Joe Marin and more (click on the hyper links on their names to view what they say about PDF2DTP).
One of many customer quotes we have include this:
"Really pleased to have this product [PDF2DTP for InDesign].  The Beta version was really good and saved me loads of hassle with amends to pdfs."
    Graham Bell - http://www.absolutegraphics.co.uk
    Another quote is:
“We have a lot of PDFs from „Word“ ;-) Before PDF2DTP, we used PitStop for the corrections, now we can do it better! As a recent example, we had come in an advert in PDF for a meeting. The ad was in RGB, Fonts not included, the trim and bleed were not correct, etc. I open it with the PDF2DTP plugin and it works very nice. A little bit of touching-up work on the pictures and the colours, but not much… Thanks for the app!”
    Dirk Rosenplänter
    Blueprint Werbeagentur e.K.
Hopefully this helps you see how useful and yet still affordable PDF2DTP for InDesign is. It is truly a gem, especially when all you have left is the said PDF! Thank you for the feedback and we will strive to better that side of it, for sure.

  • Importing PDFs into Documaker

We are in the process of refiling our contracts for a new look-and-feel. The vendor is supplying us with PDFs, but they import into Documaker as embedded graphics. The problem is: we have a lot of text on them that we want to make dynamic (depending on state-specifics, etc).
Does anyone have any ideas about how to cleanly import PDFs? Or maybe someone has a conversion utility that works well (we have had great success in importing Word docs into Studio).
    Thanks in advance.
    Dave

    Hello,
There are three options for doing the same. I am just giving from our earlier experience.
    1. If you are going to use Documaker Studio 12.0, you will have an option to import PDF directly as you could do an RTF or Doc.
    2. If you are using an earlier version,
    a) You may convert the PDF to a Word Doc or RTF using one of the available utilities and import the RTF or Doc. Only from 11.5, you have an option to directly import Word document. Prior versions support only RTF import.
    b) There is an utility called "Quark" which aids in converting PDF to Sections or FAPs. However, it did not give us a 100% clean conversion; we did lot of clean up with respect to alignment, font etc after the import in order to make it appear as per our expectation.
    Thank you.

  • Importing PDFs into Photoshop

    Hi,
Easy question I assume, but for some reason am stuck.
Have been creating linework in CAD and printing to PDFs. Set up a new document in photoshop, A1, 300ppi, RGB colour 8 bit. When I go to 'Place' the PDFs into the blank document, all the linework is extremely feint. I assume this has something to do with the settings?
    Many thanks in advance

If the lines are too thin for further processing then you can apply in Acrobat Pro
Advanced > Print production > Fix hairlines
Here for Acrobat Pro 8, maybe in a different location in newer versions.
Vector files can be modified by Illustrator but Fix hairlines is really simple.

  • Importing .psd into Illustrator with Windows 7

Since installing CS3 design premium onto my new Windows 7 computer, I have run into difficulty when trying to import .psd files. Trying to import the file usually doesn't do anything. Even when I open a file with a linked .psd file, it pops up with an error message "An error occurred trying to read the linked file 'xxxxxxxxx.psd.'" Reimporting file doesn't do anything. Either nothing happens or I am told I do not have enough memory to complete the action
For the most part, I've worked around this by saving my .psd as .tiff and importing the new file format. However, when I need to import a .tiff with transparency, Illustrator it tells me that Illustrator doesn't support that type of .tiff file.
Is this a Windows 7 issue? Or something else?
    I am running Windows 7 Pro, Core i7, 1.73GHz, 64-bit, 6GB RAM.

    Harron, Hi
I have both Vista 64-bit OS and Win7 64-bit OS and am running CS4 and CS5 suites.  I have had not a single problem Placing files into Illustrator CS4 or CS5 from Photoshop (32-bit) CS4 or (32-bit) CS5 [CS4 to CS4 and CS5 to CS5].  I cannot vouch for CS3 and I cannot troubleshoot earlier versions of CS such as CS(1) since CS(1) doesn't operate on 64-bit platforms with much success.

  • Problems Importing pdfs into iBook and sync to iPad air 2

Is there a solution to what appears to be a widespread problem within the community? That of not being able to import books in pdf form into iBooks and subsequently syncing with an iPad Air 2 running iOS 8.1. This seems to be specific to pdfs not 'purchased' from iTunes. In the past I have had all my software manuals available on my iPad, synced with my iMac, all working happily and would dearly love to return this situation.
I then upgraded to iOS 8. Big mistake. iTunes on the iMac (OS 10.6.8) does not sync pdfs to new iPad.
Try syncing from MacBookPro (OS 10.10) still no luck.
There are suggestions to use iTunes, but there is no longer an option to view 'Books' in iTunes.
Can anybody offer a work around until such times as the collective 'apple digit' is removed and a not so 'minor bug' is fixed?
Are Apple working on this problem or even aware of it?

Have you tried the shortcut to add books/pdfs Command Shift O?
Command Shift O is not available in iBooks (Greyed Out)
Command Shift in Finder shortcuts to Documents
Maybe I didn't explain myself very well earlier. When I am working in iBooks, having control clicked multiple files and selected 'Open With iBooks' to get the pdfs into iBooks, (as per your suggestion) a click on a pdf icon initiates nothing, a double click causes the pdf to open in Preview. This I can achieve from the Finder.
The reason I haven't tried to sync from the MBP is that I rely on iPad iBooks as a reference source. At the moment it is working but not the way I want it to (Sync via iMac 10.8.6). When Ibooks on the MBP is finally OK, then I will try.
    Thanks for hanging in there.

  • Import SWF into illustrator

    Hi there
Just wondering if anyone knows a way to import an SWF sequence into Illustrator?
I've tried placing and opening the swf in illustrator but neither seem to work
    Thanks a lot

I think the best you can do is export from Flash as a gif, jpeg or png sequence.

  • Importing PDF to illustrator. Text does not display.

I am using Illustrator CS6 on windows 7. I created a document on Illustrator CS4 on mac osx and exported the file to a pdf. Now when I want to edit the pdf in illustrator the images and drawings display correctly, but only certain text is shown. Not any text in particular, but just random lines of text within paragraphs. The rest of the text does not show up at all. What could be the issue?

Why not open the AI file?
In any case, as Monika points out, the PDF really needs to eb created with the AI editing capability turned on. That way, AI is opening the AI data contained in the PDF, not the PDF data.
    Take care, Mike
***Oops, cross-post. I see you did preserve the AI data now.***

  • Import PDF into InDesign

Brand New InDesign User (latest version on OS X)
We have layout modifications to do on some marketing material that is being sent to us in PDF form. I know InDesign can import the PDFs but it seems that the type and image layers are not available. It's very tedious to go into Acrobat (we have Acrobat Standard on Windows) and save out all the images, cut and paste the text, check the fonts, re-lay out in InDesign.
Surely such a sophisticated layout program made by Adobe should be able to access the type layers in a PDF directly?
    Colin

    Bob,
Thanks for the quick reply. I may have spoken loosely about 'layers'. The PDF documents have text, embedded fonts and images at least. The original documents are not available (lost) and the PDFs were probably created from InDesign or some similar layout program.
Thanks for the plugin link, it looks good but another $249 on top of the ID full price we just paid...
The placed PDF looks like a graphic in ID and yet it has all this good information in it, text, fonts, images. Hard to believe it wouldn't be available.

  • Importing PDF into RH X5

OK... so this may sound like a very simple question, but I
really don't understand how to import a PDF file into a Robohelp
X5(winhelp 4) project? - I'm pretty sure that we are using the
"classic" version of Robohelp, not the HTML version. Up until now,
we have been manually copying the info from the PDF files (product
catalogs) into word docs to enter... but it is taking wayyyyy to
much time (there's got be an easier way!)
    THANKS! ~ paul

Is that really the end, doc ?

  • Importing pdf into RoboHelp HTML 8.

I get an "unsupported or corrupted file" error when trying to import a pdf as a topic into RoboHelp HTML 8. The file opens fine in Acrobat.

I've done that also.  However, one of my help projects consists solely of pdfs from other sources.  I've found that the print method works best for me.
Thanks for the tip, however.  It's good to know that someone looks at the responses.

What about importing the pdf in your baggage files?   The trick here is getting the project manager to display the Baggage Fle folder.  Toggle the icons at the top of the Project Manager window until they display.  See this thread below for the import instructions.
