Unhandled Exception after deactivating a feature

  I have a solution with 3 features to apply custom branding to SharePoint.  The feature that applies a new homepage takes an error when the feature is deactivated.  I have an event receiver that reverts the homepage to the old homepage when
the feature is deactivated.  Here are the important points.
1.  This error only occurs when the feature receiver runs and only occurs when my code to revert the home page runs.
2.  The error does not occur in the code.  The code runs all the way to completion and all code blocks in the feature receiver, appear to be exiting gracefully.  The error just appears when the page attempts to refresh after the post-back.
 However, refreshing the page after that brings you back to the ManageFeatures.aspx and the feature is no longer active.  So, everything is working, it just shows an error after post-back.
3.  The features can be activated fine and there is a feature receiver on activation that applies the new home page.  That has never taken an error.
Here are the errors from the ULS logs:

Here is my code that reverts the home page:
        public static void revertHomepage(string siteUrl, string welcomePage)
            string keyName = "Dsoft_OldhomePage";
            string oldHomepage = null;
            string currentHomepage = null;

            oldHomepage = Pbags.CheckForProperty(siteUrl, keyName, "Web");
            using (SPSite site = new SPSite(siteUrl))
                    SPWeb web = site.OpenWeb();
                    SPFolder rootFolder = web.RootFolder;
                    currentHomepage = rootFolder.WelcomePage;
                    // check to see if we need to revert
                    try
                        if (oldHomepage != welcomePage && oldHomepage != currentHomepage)
                            rootFolder.WelcomePage = oldHomepage;
                            rootFolder.Update();

                        TraceSeverity.Unexpected, string.Format("Error Getting List Data: {0}", e.Message));
                    finally
                        web.Dispose();
                    // delete from property bag
                    Pbags.DeleteProperty(siteUrl, keyName, "Web");

Thanks, Amr.  I'll try that again later but I don't believe that calling the debugger is going to provide more information than I already provided.  The ULS logs are pretty detailed.  I have already stepped through the code and I have very
detailed logs from ULS.  Can you look at the log entries and code I provided?
Thanks,
Lance

  • Document ID - Property field shows on item view property page after deactivating the Document ID Service features at Site Collection level

    Hi,
    When a site collection was created, I enabled the Document ID feature at site collection level.  Then some item was created in a document library as well as list libarary
    Now it was decided that we dont want the Document ID feature so I disable the feature from Collection feature list
    Still when a user view the property of a document it shows the Document ID property with the ID (when click on the ID it shows the message that
    This Site Collection is not configured to use Document IDs.

    to looked at the content type to see if I can remove the document ID but I could not find the Document ID as a property that can be removed from the type

    Hi,
    I would just remove the column from the view.  You can make views for each list, it you look under the list by Clicking List while the list is open, you should see a link in the ribbon which say "Modify view" click this link.
    This link will open the edit view page you can then uncheck the box for the column which will remove it form that view.
    According to this
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee559302.aspx
    Deactivating the feature removes links to the Site Collection Settings page, makes the page that is used to look up document IDs no longer available, turns off the document ID service, and stops assigning document IDs. The server does not remove the columns
    that it adds at the site level when the feature is first activated so that, even after deactivation, the existing document IDs are preserved. After the feature is deactivated, users who try to use a static URL to look up an item by its document ID see an error
    message indicating that "This Site Collection is not configured to use document IDs."
    The Document id service will add new columns to the document content type and the document set content type.
    It also adds an event receiver which should be deactivated when you deactivate the doc id service.
    Theoretically.  You should be able to go in and remove the columns from the document type, and then force an update.

    ************** JIT Debugging **************
    To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
    application or computer (machine.config) must have the
    jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
    The application must also be compiled with debugging
    enabled.
    For example:
    <configuration>
        <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
    </configuration>
    When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
    will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
    rather than be handled by this dialog box.

    Hi,
    If you only add one file into the excluded files and locations, does this error still appear?
    Could you reproduce this error on another system?

  • Main thread isAlive() after an unhandled exception

    It appears that the main thread is "magic" in some way; after main() dies from an unhandled exception, isAlive() still reports true and join() waits forever for the (now moribund but apparnetly undead) main thread to die.
    Is there any way to detect (reliably) whether main() is really alive, as opposed to being some sort of zombie?
    Some code which demonstrates the problem:
    public class Termination {
    public static void main (String args[]) {
    Waiter w = new Waiter();
    w.start();
    try {
    Thread.currentThread().sleep(1000);
    catch (InterruptedException e) { }
    throw new RuntimeException("Bang!"); // the thread is still
    } // alive after this???
    class Waiter extends Thread {
    Thread t;
    public Waiter () {
    t = Thread.currentThread();
    public void run () {
    while (t.isAlive()) {
    System.out.println("Waiting for " + t);
    try {
    t.join(500);
    catch (InterruptedException e) {
    System.out.println("Interrupted");
    System.out.println("Joined " + t);
    System.out.println("Terminated: " + t);
    }

    This is not necessarially a solution or answer to your question, but an observation.
    The scope from whence the thread was spawned is main, main itself executes to completion. When the exception is caught, main is no longer executing once finally() is called. However, the Thread that is spawned is still alive and well, it continues to interact with itself. The thread needs to be destroyed. Check out my changes.
    Main is "dead" when the exception is thrown, and caught is called or if finally is defined it is called, I believe.
    public class Termination {
        public static void main (String args[]) {
            Waiter w = new Waiter();
            w.start();
            try {
                Thread.currentThread().sleep(1000);
            } catch (InterruptedException e) {
                w.destroy();  //destroy child thread
                //throw new RuntimeException("Bang!");
        class Waiter extends Thread {
            Thread t;
            public Waiter () {
                t = Thread.currentThread();
            public void run () {
            while (t.isAlive()) {
                System.out.println("Waiting for " + t);
                try {
                    t.join(500);
                } catch (InterruptedException e) {
                    System.out.println("Interrupted");
                    System.out.println("Joined " + t);
            System.out.println("Terminated: " + t);
    }

    Thanks,

    Hello Shardha,
                            I really appreciate that you have faced this issue.This is really very strange issue and basically it occurs because of big size of your early bound class and slow internet
    connection.
                            I would strictly recommend you to reduce the file size of your early bound class and then register.By default early bound class is created for all the entities which are
    present in CRM(System entities as well custom entities).Such kind of early bound classes takes lots of time to register on server and hence timeout exception comes.
                            There is some standard define to reduce the size of early bound class.Please follow the link to get rid from big size of early bound class.
    Create a new C# class library project in Visual Studio called SvcUtilFilter.
    In the project, add references to the following:
    CrmSvcUtil.exe(from sdk)   This exe has the interface we will implement.
    Microsoft.Xrm.Sdk.dll  (found in the CRM SDK).
    System.Runtime.Serialization.
      Add the following class to the project:
    using System;
    using System.Collections.Generic;
    using System.Xml.Linq;
    using Microsoft.Crm.Services.Utility;
    using Microsoft.Xrm.Sdk.Metadata;
    namespace SvcUtilFilter
        /// <summary>
        /// CodeWriterFilter for CrmSvcUtil that reads list of entities from an xml file to
        /// determine whether or not the entity class should be generated.
        /// </summary>
        public class CodeWriterFilter : ICodeWriterFilterService
            //list of entity names to generate classes for.
            private HashSet<string> _validEntities = new HashSet<string>();
            //reference to the default service.
            private ICodeWriterFilterService _defaultService = null;
            /// <summary>
            /// constructor
            /// </summary>
            /// <param name="defaultService">default
    implementation</param>
            public CodeWriterFilter( ICodeWriterFilterService defaultService )
                this._defaultService = defaultService;
                LoadFilterData();
            /// <summary>
            /// loads the entity filter data from the filter.xml file
            /// </summary>
            private void LoadFilterData()
                XElement xml = XElement.Load("filter.xml");
                XElement entitiesElement = xml.Element("entities");
                foreach (XElement entityElement in entitiesElement.Elements("entity"))
                    _validEntities.Add(entityElement.Value.ToLowerInvariant());
            /// <summary>
            /// /Use filter entity list to determine if the entity class should be generated.
            /// </summary>
            public bool GenerateEntity(EntityMetadata entityMetadata, IServiceProvider services)
                return (_validEntities.Contains(entityMetadata.LogicalName.ToLowerInvariant()));
            //All other methods just use default implementation:
            public bool GenerateAttribute(AttributeMetadata attributeMetadata, IServiceProvider services)
                return _defaultService.GenerateAttribute(attributeMetadata, services);
            public bool GenerateOption(OptionMetadata optionMetadata, IServiceProvider services)
                return _defaultService.GenerateOption(optionMetadata, services);
            public bool GenerateOptionSet(OptionSetMetadataBase optionSetMetadata, IServiceProvider services)
                return _defaultService.GenerateOptionSet(optionSetMetadata, services);
            public bool GenerateRelationship(RelationshipMetadataBase relationshipMetadata, EntityMetadata otherEntityMetadata, IServiceProviderservices)
                return _defaultService.GenerateRelationship(relationshipMetadata, otherEntityMetadata, services);
            public bool GenerateServiceContext(IServiceProvider services)
                return _defaultService.GenerateServiceContext(services);
    This class implements the ICodeWriterFilterService interface.  This interface is used by the class generation
    utility to determine which entities, attrributes, etc. should actually be generated.  The interface is very simple and just has seven methods that are passed metadata info and return a boolean indicating whether or not the metadata should be included
    in the generated code file.
    For now I just want to be able to determine which entities are generated, so in the constructor I read from an XML
    file (filter.xml) that holds the list of entities to generate and put the list in a Hashset.  The format of the xml is this:
    <filter>
      <entities>
        <entity>systemuser</entity>
        <entity>team</entity>
        <entity>role</entity>
        <entity>businessunit</entity>
      </entities>
    </filter>
    Take a look at the methods in the class. In the GenerateEntity method, we can simply check the EntityMetadata parameter
    against our list of valid entities and return true if it's an entity that we want to generate.
    For all of the other methods we want to just do whatever the default implementation of the utility is.  Notice
    how the constructor of the class accepts a defaultService parameter.  We can just save a reference to this default service and use it whenever we want to stick with the default behavior.  All of the other methods in the class just call the default
    service.
    To use our extension when running the utility, we just have to make sure the compiled DLL and the filter.xml file
    are in the same folder as CrmSvcUtil.exe, and set the /codewriterfilter command-line argument when running the utility (as described in the SDK):
    crmsvcutil.exe /url:http://<server>/<org>/XrmServices/2011/Organization.svc /out:sdk.cs  /namespace:<namespace> /codewriterfilter:SvcUtilFilter.CodeWriterFilter,SvcUtilFilter
    /username:[email protected] /password:xxxx
    That's it! You now have a generated sdk.cs file that is only a few hundred kilobytes instead of 5MB.
    One final note:  There is actually a lot more you can do with extensions to the code generation utility.
    For example: if you return true in the GenerateOptionSet method, it will actually generated Enums for each CRM picklist (which it doesn't normally do by default).
    Also, the source code for this SvcUtilFilter example can be found here.
    Use at your own risk, no warranties, etc. etc.
    Please mark as a answer if this post is useful to you.

  • System crash after unhandled exception during pending A/D conversion

    Anybody experienced similar phenomena and/or has a fix ?:
    I'm using the DAQ components (6.0) for ActiveX (subset delivered with the NI-DAQ driver-CD) from VB 6.0 (SP6) to control measurements with a 6040/6070 E-series card.
    The application starts a delayed (with CWpulse) A/D conversion and waits for the "acquired data" event. In the meantime, several other application-handled events can happen (mouse, kbd, timer, network link).
    We have a watchdog application which monitores the main application, but...:
    If there occurs an unhandled exception while the A/D conversion is pending, the system crashes after the "serious error..." message / error reporting of the O/S is confirmed - both on Win2000 and XP (SP1a). One can here the HDD retract and the (mostly) reboot. Two times, the system locked up so bad, it won't even restart until a complete power-cycle - of course at the customer's site... :-(
    That kind of behaviour is reproduceable when I force an exception (e.g. div-by-zero) after the CWAI component was started.
    I tried that on systems with NIDAQ 6.9.3 and also with 7.1, but both give me no chance to return to the O/S after the application failure.
    Does anybody know about the reason for such unfriendly behaviour or can help me to solve that problem?
    Any help will be much appreceated!

    While DAQmx is not officially supported through Visual Basic 6.0, it can be done. I am not a VB6 user and haven't tried it, but you can look at the following Knowledge Base explaining how to accomplish this. You can also look at the following MSDN article explaining how to access DLLs and the Windows API through VB. Essentially you end up making DLL calls as you normally would through VB using the DAQmx C API. I hope this helps.

  • Unhandled exception when installing SQL Server 2008 R2

    I tried to download SQL Server 2008 R2 Express it ran for about 30 minutes and then gave a Net Framework error stating that "an Unhandled exception has occurred in your
    application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue....." Once I clicked Continue and it did continue to run and then brought up an info screen with no semblance of the download having worked. I had successfully
    installed SQL Server 2005 Express previously. I uninstalled it along with the Studio Manager. Do I need to uninstall .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and  .NET Framework 4 Client Profile which are still currently installed before I can install 2008?

    Sorry I have to reopen this. But I have a similar, but not the same problem.
    I have Windows 7 64bit Ultimate, with VS 2010 professional on my notebook, quad core processor with 8gb of ram and plenty of disk space. I am trying to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer edition on my computer. .Net 4.0 was installed, as was .Net 3.5.1
    (from the "Turn Windows Features On/Off" of Programs and Features Control Panel applet).
    When I try to install, I get a Dialog labelled "Microsoft .NET Framework", then the error is "Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click on Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit,
    the application will close immediately. <p> An error occurred create the configuration section handler for userSettings/Microsoft.SqlServer. Configuration.LandingPage.Properties.Settings: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Version=4.0.0.0.Culture-neutral.

    I have removed .Net 4, I have removed .Net 3.5.1 and readded it, rebooting after each step.
    any help on this would be appreciated.

  • Debugger - unhandled exception trapping?

    3.1.681
    Can someone explain to me how to set up a Debugger trap for any unhandled exception?
    I use Debug | Run | Exception Breakpoint (lit) | Unhandled Exception Throw (lit ) but it doesn't seem to save (When I come back it is unlit again)? Is there something more that needs to be done?
    grin Is was fun looking at the documentation like "Step Over to Step Over the method" and then determining that "Step Over==Step" in other debuggers, and I can't find a "Step Over" ( or Skip ) function? sigh If each new town incorporated makes its own vocabulary, changing definitions while using the same words as another town.... well, I guess that's a really common issue in computer application tools.

    You make me smile! Ok, the terms are confusing. I'm not going to lash anyone with a wet noodle, but hopefully the docs will get better, without any tortellini torture.
    Ok, Step Over does execute the method without stopping (unless it encounters a real breakpoint somewhere). What you want is to NOT execute the method. Ok, we have such a feature (starting with JDev 3.1 I think), but it is only available with OJVM, which hopefully you are using! (Unless you specify -classic or -hotspot in the Java VM Parameters field of the Run/Debug tab in the project properties dialog box, then you are probably using OJVM).
    Click in the editor and place the text cursor on the line that you want to skip to. Don't put the text cursor on the line you want to skip over, but do put it on the line where you want to end up. Then go to the main menu and choose Debug -> Set Next Statement. That will move the execution point of the current thread to the line where the text cursor is, without executing any code.
    If the menu item is grayed, check the following:
    1. You are using ojvm. You can verify this by looking in the message view while you are debugging. The message view shows the command which was used to start your program in debug mode. After the "...\jre\bin\java" part, there should be a -XXdebug. Note that there are two Xs. If -XXdebug is present, it means that you are using OJVM. If you see -classic or -hotspot or -Xdebug (only one X), then you are not using OJVM.
    2. The text cursor in the code editor is on a valid and executable line of java code. Make sure it is not on a comment.
    3. The text cursor is within the same method as the execution point. We don't let you "jump" into a different method.
    Be very careful using this feature. We call it a buyer-beware feature. If you skip over initialization of local variables, you are likely to get into trouble very quickly, especially if the uninitialized variable is not a primitive type. If you skip over code which is "necessary" to the rest of you program, you are going to get into trouble.
    You can also use this feature to repeat the execution of a statement. For example, if you pressed Step Over but you meant to Trace Into, you can put the cursor BACK on the line you wanted to trace into, do Set Next Statement, and then do Trace Into. Again, buyer-beware: if the code you are repeating causes side effects, then it may not be safe to repeat it.
    About the exception breakpoint stuff. The problem arises from mixing old and new debugger architectures, which happened when we started supporting JDK 1.2 (new) and continued to support JDK 1.1 (old). The user interface was mostly written when we only supported JDK 1.1, and the UI basically matched the underlying debugging support. However, the debugging support we have in JDK 1.2 is a little different, so we try our best to match an old user interface to the new underlying debugging support.
    Did you happen to go to Oracle Open World and check out JDev 5, which was shown at the "campground"? With JDev 5, we can all look forward to a better product, where the UI can be re-designed (where necessary) to better match the underlying capabilities.
    Liz

    As I understand, you are encountering the issue that Workflow Manager Backend service terminating each time. May I know did you run the update cmdlets after you installed the updates for SharePoint server 2013? Please confirm it per the link below:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn133867.aspx
    If you haven’t run the updates cmdlets, I suspect this is an install issue. I’d suggest you re-install workflow manager to resolve the issue:
    1) Leave WFM/SB Farm
    2) Uninstall updates and application in the following order and one at a time:
    Service Bus CU1
    Workflow Manager CU1
    Service Bus 1.0
    Workflow Manager 1.0
    Workflow Manager Client 1.0
    Microsoft Windows Fabric
    3) Log into SQL server and delete Service Bus and Workflow Manager databases.
    SBManagementDB
    SBGatewayDB
    SBMessageContainer01
    WFManagementDB
    WFInstanceManagementDB
    WFResourceManagementDB
    4) Install in the following order one at a time through Web Platforms Installer:
    Workflow Manager 1.0
    Service Bus 1.0 CU1

  • Powerpivot - Can't insert formula that combines two or more different columns and keep getting message "unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application...

    I am using powerpivot v2 with excel 2010.
    When I go to my excel file's powerpivot and I try to insert a formula in any column, I constantly get the following message:
    "unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application. If you click continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue".

    Does anybody know how to fix this ?

    Mark,
    I used the Fix It found here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501
    I would have to ask my IT support person for more specifics, but as I understand the scenario with my particular laptop: the laptop came preloaded with RTM build of 2013.  We used Control Panel to uninstall Office 2013, in order to install Office
    2010.  I installed PowerPivot add-in and used it successfully with no issues for several months.  After attempting to install another program and encountering issues with apparent traces left behind of Office 2013 uninstall, I found the link above
    and used the Fix It to attempt to remove all remaining traces of Office 2013.  While it did appear to find and clean-up quite a bit left behind from the Office 2013 install, I was surprised to find an error upon entering my existing installation
    of PowerPivot for 2010 and attempting to type new formulas into the formula bar.
    My experience to-date is that an error message stating ""Return Argument Has an Invalid Type" appears anytime I select or modify a formula in the formula bar that would cause the intellisense to appear.  For example, when I first click into the formula
    bar, I do not get an error...but as soon as I type the first letter, before the intellisense appears, I get the error message.  Throughout the remainder of the formula as I type, just prior to any time when the intellisense drop-down will appear
    again, I get the same error message again (see details below).
    At one time, although I can't reproduce it now, the error message did state ".Net Framework" in the menu bar of the error pop-up window.  I can't get that to appear again, as it now only says "PowerPivot for Excel".  Based on this, I had attempted
    to see if I could repair my .NET framework install using the following tool:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30135
    I learned, however, that since I am running Windows 8 which comes with .NET 4.5 built-in to the OS, this tool does not yet cover that version for repair.
    While the overall end-result of my PowerPivot models appear to be just the same, having to click through "Continue" on the error message multiple times each time I enter a new formula is a huge drain on productivity.
    Let me know if you have any additional questions.
    David

  • A question about ROLLBACK and Unhandled Exceptions in stored subprograms

    Hi,
    Oracle version :   Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.1.0 - 64bit
                      OS :   Linux Fedora Core 17 (X86_64)
    At chapter 11 of the online PL/SQL Reference, here is what oracle says about Unhandled Exceptions :
    If a stored subprogram exits with an unhandled exception, PL/SQL does not roll back database changes made by the subprogram.
    I tried the following code:
    code
    HOST clear;
    SET SQLBLANKLINES ON;
    ALTER SESSION SET PLSQL_WARNINGS='ENABLE:ALL';
    DROP TABLE tmptab;
    CREATE TABLE tmptab(n NUMBER);
    CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE pkg1_pkg
    AUTHID DEFINER
    AS
        MYEXCEPTION EXCEPTION;
        PRAGMA      EXCEPTION_INIT(MYEXCEPTION, -20001);
    END;
    SHOW ERRORS;
    -- This is a subprogram which exists
    -- with an unhandled exception
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE mytestProc
    AUTHID DEFINER
    IS
    BEGIN
        INSERT INTO tmptab(n) VALUES(100);
        -- So this unhandled exception does a ROLLBACK
        -- which cancels the previous INSERT statement
        RAISE pkg1_pkg.MYEXCEPTION;
    END mytestProc;
    SHOW ERRORS;
    BEGIN
        mytestProc();
    END;
    SELECT * FROM tmptab;
    And here is the output
    BEGIN
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-20001:
    ORA-06512: at "TRAINING.MYTESTPROC", line 6
    ORA-06512: at line 2
    no rows selected
    The fact that SELECT * FROM tmptab gives: no rows selected indicates that the unhandled exception in the stored subprogram myTestProc did in fact a ROLLBACK for the INSERT statement into the tmptab table.
    So I don't understand why in the documentation it has been mentioned that no ROLLBACK is not done.
    Could anyone kindly make some clarification on this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Regards,
    Dariyoosh

    Hi,
    If a stored subprogram exits with an unhandled exception, PL/SQL does not roll back database changes made by the subprogram.
    What's going on here is that an anonymous block (which is not stored) exits with an unhandled exception, and that does roll back uncommitted transactions.
    I created a procedure to see how many rows are in tmptab:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE tmptab_cnt (in_txt  IN  VARCHAR2)
    AUTHID DEFINER
    AS
         n    PLS_INTEGER;
    BEGIN
         SELECT  COUNT (*)
         INTO    n
         FROM    tmptab;
        dbms_output.put_line (  n
                             || ' rows in tmptab in '
                             || in_txt
    END  tmptab_cnt;
    and called it from your procedure, and also from your anonymous block:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE mytestProc
    AUTHID DEFINER
    IS
    BEGIN
        INSERT INTO tmptab(n) VALUES(100);
        tmptab_cnt ('mytestProc');
        RAISE pkg1_pkg.MYEXCEPTION;
    END mytestProc;
    SHOW ERRORS;
    BEGIN
        mytestProc();
    EXCEPTION
      WHEN OTHERS THEN
        tmptab_cnt ('anonymous block');
        RAISE;
    END;
    The output from this is:
    Procedure created.
    No errors.
    1 rows in tmptab in mytestProc
    1 rows in tmptab in anonymous block
    BEGIN
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-20001:
    ORA-06512: at line 6
    no rows selected
    As you can see, there was 1 row in the table after the procedure returned to the anonymous block.
    Thanks for posting such a clear and complete test script; that really helps.
    How did you format the code, with the green background and the title?
