Unibody MacBook presentation and NFS:Carbon...

Hi All,
I'm sure you all remember Apple's video presenting new, Unibody MacBooks. At about 4 minutes they are presenting how great the game graphic is in 13" MacBook, showing Need For Speed: Carbon running in full screen.
I purchased the game, and was really disappointed, that not only is it running nowhere close as smooth as showed (on minimum details, yeah, but doesn't look as good as in demo) but also... doesn't support widescreen resolutions, and therefore there is no way of running it on full screen (without black bars on each side of the screen).
I looked for patches and updates, but there's nothing available that would solve my problem.
I feel that Apple lied to me...

Ok, let's say I am an IT pro, so I know what could reduce performance and don't believe that's the case. I have 4 GB RAM, 100 GB free space, and no apps running in background (apart from system tasks).
Also, it's not performance i'm worried about most (it's still playable, and there's only as much one can expect from integrated graphic...) but wide screen mode... I google it a lot, and there seem to be common issue... funny Apple didn't have it on their "demo machine" in that video...

  • Unibody Macbook temprature and fan speed issue

My daughters late 2009 unibody Macbook's fan is not increasing when a heavy load is put on it.
What ever temperature it is at the fan stays at a constant 2000 rpm (minimum rpm). I've seen the cpu temps reach just shy of 170 degrees, but, no reaction from the fan to cool the processor off.
I've tried SMC Fan Control to change the rpm, but, even when increasing the fan speed, the fan does not speed up.
So far I've tried an SMC reset and PRAM reset to no avail.
Odd, because I have the same Macbook as hers and the fan operates fine. SMC Fan Control show control over the fans rpm and speeds up on command unlike hers.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you

Just tell them to order the part and give you a call when it's in. It's three screws and a vertical JST connector. Including the time needed to remove the bottom cover and put it back, I'd say this is a 5 minute job.
Just tell your daughter not to put the system under heavy load until it's fixed, and be sure to test it as soon as you reasonably can. They may insist on testing it before they give it back to you, and that may bump the time required to more like 10-15 minutes.
After it's fixed, you should probably remove SMCFanControl from the system. It's really not a good idea to go messing with the fans on these systems. So best to remove the temptation to do so that a program like that being installed would create.

  • 2008 unibody macbook wireless and track pad issue

my wireless stopped working awyle back and now the track pad is acting up.
does apple offer a flat fee repair sevice?? for out of warranty \ apple care  units?
    thanks fred

I deleted the mouse by selecting it in the bluetooth options and clicking the minus tab. I went ahead and reinstalled OS X right afterwards. Right now I am having to use a USB mouse and keyboard. I disconnected both prior to start up. I get a widow that shows a demonstration on how to install batteries into a wireless mouse only way to pass that screen was to reattach the USB mouse. Then with a fresh startup no resolve.

Advance warning - Mail worked fine.
I had fits with the last link I posted. At first it worked fine, then all of a sudden, it quit working. I now have iCloud - iCal syncing, but iCal is read only. Not a real big deal since you can log onto iCloud using Safari and post a new event.
I finally gave up on Address Book because it kept creating multiple contacts, which if you tried to merge or delete the multiple contacts, the contacts were deleted. It also worked at first and then stopped working as it should.

Id choose the I5 yes, depends on what your usage is going to be,
....your question about "128 gig being enough" begs the question for IDEALIZED USE of your macbook AIr
In the case of a Macbook Air with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace.  You should never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’.
*Generally, unless you NEED the data at least once every few weeks or once a month,...it really does'nt NEED to be on the SSD of your Macbook Air.
Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their computers internal HD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your macbook has a HD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your computer to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation.
Ive got more APPS than any human should have on my 128gig AIR,..(50 or so),....and 10gig of working data, important files etc etc.
Still have 82gig available....... the entire point is that someone shouldnt consider the Air a "storage device" for tons of pics, music, vids, etc.
*Never consider any computer a data storage device at any time under any circumstance, rather a data creation, sending, and manipulation device. Anyone who thinks data is safe on any computer, even copied upon multiple partitions is making a mistake that will, without fail, strike.
For needs of packing around a LOT of "big data" with your Air in its case..., get a nice 1TB HD for $70, or even a 2TB drive not much bigger.
Perfect 2TB HD, very slim, the "little giant"   made by Toshiba (have several of these) $119

  • Macbook Pro unibody, Windows 7 and ForceWare 186.03, Problems installing

I've posted this at macrumors and the nvidia forum to no avail...
I've been having issues getting this to install. First let me state my setup. I'm using the late 2008 Unibody Macbook Pro 15". I have windows 7 RC 1 running with Boot Camp. I downloaded the forceware version 186.03 for my Geforce 9600GT.
The thing is, when i tried installing the driver, it recognizes that I have a nvidia chip and installs away. It pauses for what seems like 5 minutes and asks for a restart. Mind you know that PhysX and the nVidia Control Panel are not installed. Upon restarting back into windows, I realise that the driver is actually intalled (It states that I'm running a GeForce 9600 GT in Device Manager).
I tried launching the nvidia control panel setup manually from the extracted files in C:\NVIDIA but it only says that the required drivers aren't available for support and then it just ends. PhysX can be installed manually but there is no way I can find out if it indeed has been installed.
Can anyone shed some light on what I can do? I've also tried manually installing the drivers.
    Thanks... Gordo

At this point, if you try installing driver again, try using Driver Sweeper 2.0 from Guru3D to sweep and delete drivers in addition to uninstalling. That can clean things up and help, but I am at a loss and just from reading seems mixed results on MBP as to which ones to use and work or not.
So do browse through today's posts. Though I am perplexed MacRumors couldn't help - seems mixed and the Mac Pro section sometimes more help than Windows on Mac. Though the MacBook area you tried also?

    Wow. Okay...
I'll let the real veterans in this forum tackle your issues one after the other. But, I can tell you, all will be well.
My only comment would be re: your computer specs:

To be completely honest, FCPX is a RAM hog. It just is. But, RAM is relatively cheap, and the pay-off is good.
4GB is right on the edge, IMHO. 16G is ideal.
I wish you luck, hang in there, and standby for more help.

  • Unibody MacBook Pro 17, SSD and Vista x64 - Does it work?

I see many discussions about problems with various brands of SSD drives and Vista x64 under Boot Camp.
Can any of you confirm that Vista x64 will install on a unibody MacBook Pro 17" with the Apple-provided 250g SSD option?

It works well. Don't forget to turn the disk defrag off after installing and booting into Vista.

I'm the same and can confirm the USB port has the power to run the drive when the Macbook's running off mains power, although I don't know if that applies when it's on battery power.

  • Unable to map expose and spaces keys to function keys on unibody macbook

Hi all. I just bought a unibody macbook and wanted to add the spaces key to view all the windows in all spaces to the F5 key, and another expose key to F6. I went into the control panel under "expose and spaces" and "keyboard shortcuts" under "keyboard" and tried to set these keys. But it never actually accepts any of the settings I make. I put the settings to make them f5 and f6 but nothing happens when I press the keys. I know about the gestures and the hardcoded keys that are predefined on the macbook, but none of these allows me to use spaces to look at all the windows.
What's going on here, have they made it impossible to set your own keys for these things now? Is f5 and f6 just totally unusable now? Is there a workaround?
This is really annoying. Any suggestions?

haha, I just figured it out after I posted it. It's Function-F5 that it get's mapped to even though it still says only f5. I don't know why it doesn't just say that in the first freaking place, but whatever.
Does anyone know of a way to do this without having to use function-f5 and just mapping it to plain old f5? As far as I can see the key is just sitting there unused..

I recently purchased a MacBook Air and was told by Apple that Keynote and Pages were compatible with MS Applications.. I have since tried to open a Powerpoint Presentation but it comes up with an error message and is not right. Help!

If there are fonts, transitions, builds, video or audio in the PowerPoint file that are not compatible with Keynote, it will either prevent the presentation opening or Keynote will substitute the settings causing playback changes.
I use Open Office to play and open any PowerPoint files sent to me, they play exactly as in PowerPoint.
Open Office is free, you can download it here:

  • I have my new HD in a USB enclosure connected to my MacBook Pro and I want to put a fresh copy of Mountain Lion on it. But I do not have an install DVD as I got ML as a download from the App Store. What do I do?

I have my new HD in a USB enclosure connected to my MacBook Pro and I want to put a fresh copy of Mountain Lion on it. I'm told that I need to boot from the Installation Disk to start. But I do not have an install DVD as I got ML as a download from the App Store. Can I download ML from the App Store again, but this time directly to my new HD?

Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
You can also use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your present setup to it and boot from it.
    Most commonly used backup methods
However, SOME external enclosures are not bootable, you will soon find out.

  • Trackpad Model # mid 2009 13" unibody Macbook Pro

What model trackpad can I use to replace the one in my mid 2009 unibody macbook pro?...and where can I get one from a preferably reliable source?
It clicks but doesn't respond unless I press hard.  The Apple store offered to replace it but for a lot.  I'd rather swap it out myself.

First see here for a guide on doing so: iFixit
Once you decide that's something you want to do search for the part.
I did a Google Shopping search and found one around $65, click HERE
I don't have a specific brand that I recommend, just make sure that when you purchase it that it's NEW don't buy anything used, and also make sure there is some kind of warranty: 90-days, 3-months, 1-year, you get the point. Take your time and be wise when purchasing.
Oh, and one more thing. Make sure you have the proper tools. Click HERE to purchase parts. Trust me having the correct parts will make all the difference!
