Unibody Macbook Pro 17inch Display problems, vertical lines and artifacting

Hey everybody
I bought my 17inch MBP at B&H in June (week before WWDC, D'oh) and it was working fine until I came over to Ireland to work on a editing job for the summer, as soon as I attached it via mini display to a second monitor I started getting artifacts and vertical lines in certain shades and colours on the macbooks display, its gradually gotten worse so much so in fact that it is nearly unusable.
I have seen the thread about the firmware update, but my computer is already up to date with that but it still has this problem, I contacted apple and was told to take it to the apple store and the genius bar in Belfast, as helpful as the rep was he told me it would be two weeks for a repair, by replacing the logic board. Which I just can't do as I've only got three weeks left on the job and need my mac every day. I've searched and it seems no-one is having this problem except me since the firmware update, but clearly my machine still has problems.
Never had a problem with all my previous Mac's but I'm close to tossing this in the bin please help because if I can't get this solved I will have to move to PC and install my copy of AVID on it as this is the only other available computers at this production company.
What to do? Has anyone else had this problem recently? Or know of a fix for it? I've tried everything downloaded the firmware told me its already installed, switched the graphics displays etc etc
Please help
Thanks

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like there is a hardware problem of some sort with the graphics chips, and the only real fix is going to be to replace the logic board. So at some point, you will have to send your Mac off for repair.
In the US, you can sometimes arrange to get a loaner. You might ask if this would be possible where you are, since the repair is going to take so long.
Unfortunately, I don't know of anything that would fix your problem other than a repair.
Good luck!

  • Anti Reflective coating on macbook pro retina display problems

The AR coating is coming off of my macbook pro retina display.  laptop purchased in fall of 2013.  anyone else seeing this issue?

You are not the first one. Every laptop with retina display that I know in Latvia has this problem.
Hope that Apple reads such claims and will do something on upcoming models.

  • My macbook pro keeps freezing with vertical lines on the screen

I have a 2010 macbook pro that has worked wonderfully until now.  As of late it keeps freezing with vertical lines across the screen.  To me this indicates a hardware problem, but I ran a diagnostic (restarted while holding D) and it didn't find any errors.  It seems that it happens when I move or bump my macbook, leading me to think it may possibly be a disk problem, but I'm not sure how to check this.  Anybody else ever have this problem or could suggest a fix for it?

You can try a pram reset, which might help with the display, but the bumoing thing is what concerns me.
    PRAM reset:
Power down, power back up and hold the following keys before the start up chime.
option, command, P, R,(no commas) continue to hold these keys till you hear the start up chime 2 times then release.
Reboot see if this helps, the bumping part scares me.
    Hope this helps

  • Macbook Pro Retina Display problems.

Hi I recently purchased the Macbook Pro with Retina Display. I noticed that there is a verticle line running from each side of the screen. I doesn't seem to affect the display quality. I just wanted to know if anyone else has it and if it could lead to a problem in the future...

    HI,
I bought a MBP with retina yesterday. There are some signs about low quality of display. I have two brightening vertical line in middle of display, and right side of display has little bit different colour (mainly white) liken left side.
The APR doesn't want change this machine.
I think about Apple uses worse and worse displays in last years. You can find that picture about phenomenon here:

  • My new MacBook Pro has display problems

I am new to Mac. I had purchased a brand new MacBook Pro 13 inches with i7 processor on April2 this year, Within 10 days the display screen started to grey out and later  on develop horizontal lines. I telephoned Apple support and when a telephonic solution  became unlikely I was asked to take it to an Apple Authorized service centre in my town. The technician there could not clearly explain to me what was wrong with the system, but I understood him to say that he has reinstalled the graphics driver and the system was trouble free for a prolonged time thereafter (at the service centre). I also understood him to say that should the problem recur again, he would have to replace the motherboard. I was on a travelling tour for a week after this and was not able to test out this repair (I took my old windows system with me for the travel) To my utter dismay the problem has recurred again after 28 days of purchase. I have attached screenshots. The button for uploaing videos is greyed out therefore  I will have to restrict myself to screenshots. All the three screen images occcur
in turn and the system becomes unusable and I have to use the poweroff button. The display problems start within 10 minutes of switiching on the system.
I took some time to discover these forums. The first time this problem occurred on my machin I posted this problem on mac-forums and I was advised to take it to an Apple store and let the apple genius bar worry about this one. I do not live wihtin any sort of manageable distance from such a place and the repair centre is an Apple Authorized Service Provider
Coming to the emotional aspects of this technological glitch. I feel like I have been hit by a truck.I had saved and scraped pennies to buy this dream machine and I believed I was escaping the ficleness of windows. But no windows system of mine (I have three) become so unusable
Will I have to spend time and effort to lug this machine to service centre to replace each of its component parts one by one ? Can I ever trust this machine to provide a presentation to an audience? What sort of an impression will I create if the system plays this trick on me in the middle of some presentation?

Shootis007, What is CC company? I googled CC and got many different answers.
I called Apple Support and told them my story and pressed for replacement and they told me repeatedly that there is no policy for replacement. The initial support person who attended my call asked me to take it to the seller and ask the seller for replacement. I dont think that is the way to go. I dont know what is his fault. He gave me a brand new system, the package was opened by me. Since I am new to Mac, I had taken a Mac user friend with me who showed me how to get started (right there in the shop) Neither the experienced Mac user friend nor I felt anything remiss at that time or later at the Seller level. Nevertheless I called the reseller and he explained his helplessness. I dont think it his fault at all.
Since I kept insisting on replacment I was put through to another support person who took pains to reassure me that I should get the defective part replaced and thereafter all will be well. For now I trust him. I have no other alternative
I really am puzzled. All you dear Mac users should know that the machine I dreamed of and really saved to purchase is giving me no end of troubles whereas my three windows machines sit there with their numerous stated deficiencies but gives me uninterrupted service

  • Macbook Pro's display have weird lines

    Hey everyone,
I have a macbook pro (15-inch, Early 2011), sometimes horizontal and vertical lines randomly show up on my screen (photo below)! I' ve notice that happen when I have photoshop and illustrator opened. Is graphics card problem? Any thoughts? Thanks
Processor 2 GHz Intel Core i7
    memory 8GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6490M 256 MB

i have the same problem. and i saw on apple website https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/, that they have opened a replacement program for it. so i sent my macbook pro to an authorized apple service provider. website : http://www.ishop.com.gh/
and they asked me to pay $1000 bucks before they will replace the motherboard.

  • Macbook pro retina display problem

    Hi everyone!
I just got back from apple service with my retina macbook pro today. it had a display problem with the black paint around the display edge. it still has guarantee, so they obviously replace the whole display for MP PRO retina.
anyway, before the display maintenance, if i went to the macbook system preferences, choose display settings, i always saw the "retina display" option for my display.
with the new display, i only see the usual options, but not the retina display option. so basically, i can not choose the retina display setting!
why is that, is it mean, i don't have retina option on my mb pro?
    thanks for your answers!
    Peter

    thanks my Ginger!
i wrote an email to them, hope they answer, attached print screens as well.
but it really strange, 'coz the display says, it is a retina one! but i can not choose "(best) retina" option, like i used to, only "default"

  • 2008 Macbook Pro gets sections of vertical lines along the right facing side of the screen... the sections vary in colour when moving the display on its hinges, and is relieved slightly when applying upwards pressure to the bottom of the display.. cheers!

There are two different sections of the screen that get this effect... first off the closest to the right will distort about an inch in... then after some time another inch willl follow. the best way i can describe is a band of moving horizontal lines spreading virtically down the screen about an inch in width, changing in colour.
any help i much appreciated! obiously the mac is out of warranty... is there a 'do it yourself' approach i can take? replacing the lvds cable? just thought id ask first before i start taking things apart!
    cheers guys!

Whoa, I think I just figured out what the problem is, but it's really wierd.
So, I didn't do anything about it, since it was a little expensive, and just used the laptop with an external screen (which works fine).
For some reason, I tried to use it as a laptop today, and it worked perfectly. I took it downstairs, and after a while it stopped working again, and the screen started doing all those wierd things it did as described in the original post. It was working fine for hours, upstairs.
Then somehow it hit me! The laptop had been upstairs in my computer/storage room (which happens to be freezingly cold atm, since I don't heat that room, let's say it's like max 8°C in here) for a long time, which means the laptop was also pretty cold.
Downstairs, in the living room, it's a lot hotter, about 20°C.
So, it seems to be temperature-related. Now, as crazy as this sounds, I tested it for 10 hours in a row.
I took it upstairs and downstairs at least 5 times. tried plugging in devices, using it with and without power supply, but whatever I did the result was the same:
-Use it upstairs (cold room): It works, I can do whatever I want to it, open and close the laptop as much as I desire, it keeps working as it should.
-Use it downstairs (hot room): It works for a while, even pretty long (as long as you don't close it and open it again). Once you open it downstairs after it has been there for a while, all issues pop up again.
Can someone please explain how this is possible ?

  • MB Pro RD display with vertical lines / split

Hi, I hv a 15" MB Pro RD which booted up this morning with part of the display vertically split. Pic attached. Can anyone pls advise?
I'm 2 months out of warranty - any suggestions for estimates / parts / locations to do it in orlando?
    Thanks

The first step you should take is to make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and have them find out exactly what is wrong.  The evaluation will be FREE regardless of warranty status.  You will also be given a cost for the repairs which you may accept or decline.
iFixit.com and Powerbookmedic.com have parts, prices and instructions.  Examine those two web sites.
    Ciao.

  • Display Problems Vertical lines

Ok i have a G4 12 inch, first i had an inch wide block from top to bottom on my screen that shows as very light blue when on a white background, This First occured about a week after my years garuntee had run out, i would have opted for Apple Care had i not pushed the boat out to buy the powerbook g4 titanium.(if i had brought the ibook i would have had enough cash for apple care). My local apple store said i would need to buy a new screen wich is not an option for the money they want.
This morning i shut the screen and when i reopened it i had a pixel wide red line running fron top to bottom. Great as the machine is only 18 months old and i take great care of it.
i dont even use the laptop daily so i am a bit upset and the money i am being told i must give out for a new display.
Is it the display at fault or the graphic card?
The Machine has never been knocked about, and reading these threads i am surprised at the amount of people that say you should expect it with an lcd display.
Why i ask? as i have a Dell for work my girlfriend has a cheap Acer and this is not my first laptop and i have never ever had a problem with a display before.

As for your other aspect of your question, it is being addressed. People are getting their machines fixed. Those who are not either got a repair person who does not recognize the issue for what it is, or the problem is so intermittent as to not make it easy for them to see the problem. You should always hold on to a case number when you call AppleCare. That way, you can be sure they are tackling the issue as it is and not some other problem. I would add this discussion does not let you discuss Apple "policy" as terms of use dictate on the right:
    "2. Submissions
Search or browse for existing answers before you ask a question. Someone else may have asked your question — it may save you some time.
Stay on topic. Apple's discussion forums are here to help people use Apple products and technologies more effectively. Unless otherwise noted, don't add Submissions about nontechnical topics, including:
That Apple rumor you saw on another website.
Discussions of Apple policies or procedures.
    Speculations/rumors about unannounced products.
The status of your 1973 MG Midget restoration. "
Since this is a user to user forum, I suggest you stay within the confines of those posting restrictions. Don't ask why something isn't getting repaired. Get it repaired through the proper channels, and make sure they follow through with it correctly.

  • Macbook pro retina display working slow

Yesterday, I woke up the macbook pro from sleep mode and i had several apps opened.
Then when i did the mission control it was working very slowly. All the gestures of the track pad were working slowly.
Then after a while it started to freeze. So I restart the laptop, but the problem did not solved.
Its working slow, and its been almost 15 days from the day i bought the laptop.
I have a macbook pro retina display 15" 16gb ram and 512gb flash storage.
    Please Help me!!

My retina MacBook Pro has had terrible graphics performance problems for a couple of weeks. I searched all over various forums and tried everything: resetting SCM, manually selecting discrete/integrated graphics card, deleting graphics kexts, etc. Nothing helped until I found this: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19880198#19880198
Now my rMBP has silky smooth graphics again!
The directions in that post are a little hard to understand so I cleaned them up here:
Step 1: Delete system windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: /Library/Preferences/
    Delete the file called com.apple.windowserver.plist
Step 2: Delete user windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/
Delete all files that start with com.apple.windowserver   (On my rMBP, there was one file called com.apple.windowserver.12AFB147-95D6-5C70-8F62-C1E4F2BE81BE)
    Step 3: Reset the PRAM
        (These instructions are from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379)
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Hopefully this helps others with bad graphics performance on retina MacBook Pros.
For anyone that wants to check out the problematic plists from my rMBP, here are the files:

  • About to upgrade MacBook Pro Retina Display

Is it possible to upgrade the hardware of my MacBook Pro Retina Display with 16GB RAM and 256 SSD to 32 GB RAM?

Even if you could install additional RAM, no MBP to date has been configured to accept 32 GB RAM.
    Ciao.
A quick search suggests that there are no 204 pin DDR3 1600 Hz RAM chips available.

  • Bent Unibody MacBook Pro

So we've got a Unibody MacBook pro that fell off a bed and the case is bent in the lower right hand corner (not the lid). The computer still functions perfectly but it can't be closed. The local apple authorized store quoted us $1000 to do the repair- which isn't a very good use of $1000. Does anyone know of anywhere that the notebook could be sent to do this repair cheaper, or if it's possible to get the part and do it myself? Any advise would be great.
    Thanks!
