Unibody MBP - black squares glitches in OSX but not in bootcamp.

Hi
I have a strange graphics problem with my unibody and just wonder if its worth sending in for a repair or if it might be a known software issue:
Usually when web browsing, the mouse pointer will suddenly become unresponsive for a moment.
It will then just react strangely to my mouse movements - like it is over sensitive.
After this i will then see visual artifacts on the screen.
These appear as black square shapes around various windows.
I then regain full control over my mac but the black squares remain.
If i move an open window over one of the black artifacts it clears.
Occasionally it never recovers and i have to do a hard restart of the machine.
I also found that while attempting to play 'runescape' - a java based 3D game running in a web browser (firefox in this instance) that i would get a severe version of the issue stated above ending with my screen flickering - again forcing a hard restart.
Here is my conundrum though - this ONLY happens in OSX
I run windows7 64bit under bootcamp for gaming and can game for hours at a time with not one single crash or glitch which leads me to question wether this is a hardware issue at all.
I have done a FULL clean install of snow leopard which included trashing my user folder and creating one from fresh. (i only retained my documents).
Any advice / familiar stories would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much.

At home I've used both a NetGear and Belkin router (both N band), at work we have various networks using Cisco kit.
The encryption types vary depending on which network I'm connecting to.
The WiFi drops on all of them when in OSX but runs flawlessly on all of them when in Windows 7.
I'm currently sat here at home in the living room connected to a Netgear WNR2000 which is in the room directly above me.
Signal strength is full and the encryption is WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK.
It had been connected for around an hour without disconnecting but then in the last 20 minutes it's disconnected twice; both times refusing to reconnect automatically forcing me to turn the airport off and then back on.
The fact that the same hardware works fine in windows 7 would suggest that this has to be a software issue inside OSX.

  • Mbp black square next to apple logo on desktop

I bought my mbp in may and since then the hardrive has started to rattle, the batterys life quickly disolved to lasting on 20mins between full charges and has now fully stopped and has to be plugged in to the mains to work. I will take it back to apple when i get back from my travels to get these problems fixed.
The other day a small black square appeared next to the apple logo at the top left of the desktop. I restarted the computer and is disappeared. Tried to google "black sqaure" but nothing relivent came up. Does anyone know what that might have ment.
Would like to get all the faults fixed in one hit.
Hopefully the next one lasts much longer, i must have got a friday afternoon special, not quite what i expected from a £1000 laptop.
    Thanks

If the little black square had a "P" inside of it I would say you installed PopChar.  If not have you installed any other utilities that want to add a indicator in the menu bar?  What happens if you point at the square and click (and maybe hold down) the mouse?
As for the physical problems, you are still under warrantee, so I recommend you have apple look at and fix them.

  • 802.11ac works in OSX but not Windows 7

My Haswell Macbook Air connects to my new Airport Extreme with 802.11ac in OSX but in Windows 7 with the drivers in BootCamp 5.1.5621 I only connect with 802.11n.
I can't find any new drivers for Windows -- has anyone had any luck?

  • MBP Boots Forever/Crashes on First (but not Second) Boot

    Hi,
I am experiencing a somewhat odd phenomenon with my MBP:
If I close the lid without sleeping the MBP, the battery might keep on draining and when I open the MBP again later, all battery charge is gone.
If I now reconnect (power) and boot up the MBP, the MBP will not go past the stage where there is a grey background and the "beachball"... I had it in this stage for up to 2 hours, it is just not booting any further. If I do a hard reset (holding power button for 8 sec), the MBP boots normally... So, the MBP crahes on the first boot, but boots (always) successfully on the second boot.
The problem with the current state of things is, that I am regularily loosing work, as the latest files that were open are gone if not saved (which I tend to forget, as closing the lid does not always, and should never, lead to a system crash). I have Word set to auto-save every two minutes, but that does not always work and some other tools do not have that option.
    My questions are:
1.) How can I make sure that closing the lid actually sleeps the MBP? (I was researching the problem and found that some people claim that this might be a problem of the Mac not being able to quickly enough dump my 8GB of RAM, and that disabling "safe sleep" via Terminal might solve the problem... it did not help).
2.) How can I prevent the make from freezing on the first boot? (I have also research that, but could not really find somehting specific. I have tried checking disk with disk utility (all OK) and reparing permissions to no avail).
I also had the MBP checked for hardware issues in the Store, and had Mavericks clean installed not long ago (had the same problem with Snow Leopard)...
Could it be my 4GB RAM extension? Or some specific app causing the problem? Any standard procedures to follow to narrow the issue down?
Cheers for any solution or workaround ideas!

  • Help needed:MBP net connection slow on OSX but fast on Vista...

Ok..I've searched these forums for a while, seen lots of posts taking about people having problems with their airport card, routers and the like..but I haven't seen anyone having quite the same problem as me. My 17" 2.33Ghz C2D is linked to my 1Mb ADSL internet connection via an Aztech DSL600EW modem router. The problem is that the connection speed is really slow when I'm running the machine on OSX. I know it's an OSX thing cos the same machine, connected to the same router and running Windows Vista via Bootcamp will connect to the net ALOT faster. For example, if I'm viewing videos on youtube with OSX, I have to wait every few seconds for the video to buffer, but on Vista, the buffering is way ahead of the video. Another example would be downloading files...say from rapidshare. The typical download speed I get on OSX would be around 5-10Kbps, but with Vista, I get at least 25Kbps.
I'm quite new to OSX, and still trying to learn my way around the operating system. It seems such a pity for a really great machine with a really great operating system to be let down by slow internet connection. I hope someone out there will be able to help me sort this out. Thanks in advance.

Great, happy that it "seems to speed up things ..." Why not run the SpeedTest and "know?"
I use IPNetTuner ($30, free 21 day trial).

"*Why is it Sometimes Necessary To Tune TCP/IP*?
TCP/IP is not controlled by any manufacturer and is designed to work on almost any kind of underlying network with widely varying characteristics.
To meet this challenge, the protocol designers made TCP adaptive. TCP is self monitoring and optimizes its own behavior to match the network environment.
*Why can't somebody just write a utility that analyzes my network and automatically selects the optimum settings?* Such a tool would be both useful and popular. The answer is they already have, it's called TCP/IP, but sometimes it needs a little help.
In most cases, TCP works remarkably well all by itself. Tuning is needed in those cases where TCP doesn't quite get it right because the the network behavior is outside the expected range. Typical problems include:
Asymmetric connections that are much faster downstream than upstream.
High performance connections with relatively long latency ..."

  • Airport problems under osX, but working on bootcamp (mbp mid09)

    Hi, that's the problem:
Airport used under snow leopard can't connect to my wifi network, but all others pc or internet devices are working(iphone, 2 notebook, nokia phone).
I tried to delete preferences in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration, but.. nothing to do.
The preference panel tells me "autoconfigured IP" if i set it to dhcp.
When i use static ip configuration seems to be connected (green light on airport), but i cannot charge any page on internet.
Curious thing about the ping utility: time of some packets are about 23000 ms, and the tranmission works randomly for 5 second, then disconnect itself.
It's obviously a software issue, now i'm writing from the same mac using bootcamp and windows 7. I update my mac to 10.6.2, but the problem is still unsolved.
    What can i do?

  • IPod OK on windows XP, Mac OSX, but not Vista

Just got a new (refurbished) 5th gen ipod 30G. It syncs fine to my mac OSX laptop. It also syncs fine (after restoring) to my Windows XP laptop.
But when I connect it to my windows Vista (the preferred laptop per the primary user of this iPod) it will mount in the OS and show up as a removable drive (F:) and I can click on the drive and see the default directories.
When I launch iTunes, I wait about 5 minutes then I get an error "iPod found but the name is not recognized. Try disconnecting the iPod and reconnecting" and it never shows up in iTunes.
I did get it to show up once in iTunes, and tried to do a restore, but after the restore ran for a while, it gave an error "iPod could not be updated. Device can not be read from or written to" (error paraphrased) and gave an error code 1437, I think.
I've tried restoring it on each of the OSX and WinXP machines before trying to connect to the Vista machine, but I get the same results each time.
All the messages I can find say that 5th gen iPods should work fine with Windows Vista but mine isn't working...

That sounds odd that one Windows OS is working, but the other is not.  Is there anything in your logic that could change the view states of these controls?  If you'd like, I'd be willing to also take a look.  Feel free to send your project or installer to [email protected] and I'll try on my systems.

  • Audio Glitches on Timeline, but not when played in QT?

I had a client send me his project on a harddrive.
They exported a .mov file from FCP and it has no audio glitches when played with Quicktime.
But if i drag that file to a timeline and watch it through my DSR-25 to a NTSC monitor, it has audio glitches in certain spots.
Always at that spot though and if i watch the file in Quicktime, it plays fine.
All audio was exported originally out of FCP using Quicktime Movie with 48khz, 16 bit stereo so nothing needed to be rendered.
Seems like it has something to do with it going over via firewire through my DSR-25.
Has anyone else had this problem.
I can't make a Master DVCam tape for this master because of these audio glitches.
    Thanks for any help,
    Brian

I read a post about a user having this same sort of issue.
He said when he turns off his video layer, in my case just V1, the audio played fine.
    Same with mine.
So it seems to be an issue with the video track playing with the audio track.
If i export it and bring it back in, will it just create that same audio glitch?
Guess i will have to try.
Anyone have this issue or similiar?
    Thanks,
    Brian

  • Apple script for 10.4 - works in OSX but not older

Hi I have a script which I'm using on my current system 10.9 it runs in excel and it goes something like this:
    tell application "Microsoft Excel"
-- put the complete set of data into a list of lists (i.e., 2 dimensions -> columns of rows)
tell active sheet to set myData to value of used range
      -- recipient email
      set myRow1 to 1
      set myCol1 to 1
set Address to item {myCol1} of item {myRow1} of myData
      -- recipient name
      set myCol4 to 4
set rName to item {myCol4} of item {myRow1} of myData
The above is just a small snippet from the script.  However I try running this on apple 10.4 apple script and it does not work.  I'm trying to save my computer time from have to this minimal task on an older mac I have but I'm experiencing some problems.  Does the active sheet not work in apple mac 10.4? What am I missing?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Ohms238,
I found this Apple developer page that talks about changes made in each version of OSX. It will require some work, but you can go through and see what changes are relevant to your script.
But I would actually recommend running pieces of your code separately to see exactly what parts don't work and then rewrite just those portions.

  • Black levels fine in FCP, but not in Compressor files

Using an AJA box I have ingested SDI video to DV50 using FCP. The colors and levels on the waveform/vectorscope look fine on all tapes. The picture itself looked fine on an NTSC monitor I used when I captured the footage, and it looks fine on my iMac display as I edit.
It also looks great in Quicktime movies I've exported.
When I send the sequence to Compressor, then make a DVD using DVD Studio Pro, the blacks are crushed on all the monitors I've played it on.
I've read other posts about blacks being too high, but this is the opposite.
Do I just need a better encoder such as BitVice, or are there settings that I need to change in either Compressor or DVD Studio Pro.
I am using Final Cut Studio 2.
    Thanks for your help.

Ok -- we'll all play "guess what I'm thinking" with you...
How many audio tracks do you have?
Look - if you've been doing this for years, there should be no reason for you to ask such an open ended question with little information...
We're not going to sit here and throw out suggestions just so you can come back with short answers... we can be short too.
Why don't you give us an idea of the equipment you're using... what exactly the uncompressed clip is... what type of project you are doing... how many effects you have on the clip... etc...
bottom line QT/Fine:FCP/Jumpy -- dude... bigger overhead?
    Good luck,

  • Is it possible to reinstall the OSX but not erasing the existing documents?

Is it possible to reinstall the system from my system install disk but keeping(not erasing) the existing documents, programs and other files which are created and saved so far in my MacHD?
My Mac is MacBookPro OSX 10.6
    Thank you all in advance!

Yes, I did too the first time. These improvements creep up on us.
Stephanie, I just responded to another posting of yours with a Time Machine question. Multiple postings divert resources and you may end up with contradictory information.
An install from the (grey) 10.6 disk will not erase your data. However, if you are using a TM backup that will write over everything and current data will be lost.
As I understand your two posts, I suggest install the operating system from the 10.6 disk.
Copy what data you can to your external hard disk.
    Restore from the TM backup.
A restore from the Time Machine backup as I say will delete everything you have and replace it with the backup you select (depends on date). You can then transfer any files you copied to the hard disk if these are needed.

  • Bizarre mail problem OSX but not iOS

    Woke up this morning...
Cannot access ANY mail - Exchange, Gmail, personal IMAP
    In Mail or Outlook.
Error "incorrect password" on all account with all client including Outlook Web Access via Firefox.
But on iOS, everything is fine.
    AAAAARRRRGGGH!
Does anyone know what might cause generalised password fails on OSX on BOTH MacBook Pro and MacMini!

Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If not, do that now and see whether there's any change. Otherwise see below.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Macbook whines in OSX but not in XP

First off, just to be sure: the constant high pitch noise comes from the top left corner of the macbook keyboard is what people call "the whining" of the macbook, right? Although i can live with that, it's still nice to get rid of it, eh?
i just found this noise comes up every time when i boot into OSx. But when im in XP (w/ boot camp), i have never heard this noise at all. Anyone else noticed this?
i started wondering if this whining problem has to do with the power management scheme of the operating system. if the answer is yes, hopefully we'll see that the next OSX update should be able to fix the problem.

Your guess could be right, I cannot tell you more since my MAcBook not experiencing whining on both os X and boot camp XP.
But could be the XP (released around end of 2001, I could be wrong) is less intensively tasking compare to Tiger (released around 18 month ago, again I could be wrong). And running xp is an easy job for intel dual core processor rather than running tiger that is optimized to use all intel dual core processor resources.
But I could be wrong on this operating system compiling thing.
    Hope this help.
