Unicode font / Hebrew problem

Hello
I use two different flash card programmes to learn Hebrew vocab.
One has a setting for selecting the display font and one doesn't. Regardless of what font you choose it looks the same anyway. Both are synced over wifi.
The problem is that in one of the apps there is a letter that appears correctly on the iMac but not on the iPad. It is a letter which looks like a "w" but in one case has a dot over the left hand stroke (sin) and in another over the right hand stroke (shin).
It displays correctly on the other app.
The dev says that they have no control over the appearance as only system settings are used for fonts on the iPad.
Can anyone suggest a way around this problem, or any testing I can do to pinpoint the issue (I do not want to jailbreak etc the iPad, as some suggest is an answer). I have tried different things - even copying and pasted the Hebrew
Many thanks if you can help!
Deb

Thanks for your reply.
I've done some more investigating and it did not seem to be related to the choice of font. In fact, there were a few places where that particular letter appeared correctly.
So I started retyping the letter on the iMac and syncing over and the letter displayed correctly. I therefore assume that it could be related to the keyboard layout that was used when entering the text (I downloaded the cards from an exchange). I can't think of any other explanation, though I don't know a lot about this sort of thing. Whenever I enter that letter on my own computer it displays correctly in iOS.
Upshot is that I am retyping wherever the what should be a shin is appearing as a sin. A sin indeed!
The choice of font does not appear to make much of difference when displaying Hebrew in iOS.

  • Embedding unicode font problem

    Hi All,
           I am developing a flex application for Tamil language. I want to use tamil text in all the controls.
    When I embed a tamil unicode font with the application, it doesn't render the text properly because of the glyphs.
    @font-face {
                src: url('assets/latha.ttf');
                font-family: 'latha';
                unicode-range:
                U+0054-U+0054,
                U+0061-U+009F,
                U+002E-U+002E,
                U+0B80-U+0BFF;
            .MyEmbeddedFont {
                font-family: 'latha';
                font-size: 18px;
    Is it possible to render the glyphs fonts correctly in flex?
    Can any one help in this?
    thanks in advance

    Thanks for your reply.
    The embed font is working fine. The tamil characters are displayed in controls if it doesn't contain any glyphs. It is the problem only with the glyph characters.
    The used  font contains glyphs and works well in other platforms.
    In my flex application the glyphs are rendered incorrectly.
    I tried the recipe that you have written in the cookbook. But it is not resolved?
    Do you I need to update any settings in the compiler?
    Or I anything need to be added in the code?

  • Need help with Tamil unicode fonts in Macbook OSX 10.6.7

    I am really desperate for some help figuring out my Tamil unicode font problem. With great difficulty I got all these fonts set up on my previous ibook G4. When that computer died in the fall I got this new Macbook, and had all my data brought from the old computer to the new one. Fonts were working great, as before. Well recently I had a hard drive failure on my new Macbook (OSX 10.6.7). I now have a new hard drive, and I brought over all my data from an external hard drive using Time Machine. Everything appeared to be working great....except the Tamil fonts. Previously I was using Murasu Anjal unicode font which allowed me to type in Tamil font and view Tamil on webpages, no problem. I understand that Snow Leopard has Tamil font support (including Anjal), so I am confused as to why they were working before but are not working now-especially because on my husband's Macbook Pro (OSX 10.6.5) you can see Tamil fonts on webpages and he has no special Tamil font installed whatsoever. For me the only thing visible is boxes. I am in the midst of finishing up a dissertation which is really dependent on being able to read and write in Tamil fonts. I am desperate to get this fixed but just cannot seem to figure it out. I would greatly appreciate any help or advice!!! Thanks so much!!!

    I've always used the Anjal keyboard with no problem...at least there was no problem before my MacBook hard drive had to be replaced, with a newer operating system, as I had mentioned previously. When I type in Pages, NeoOffice or TextEdit, the results are the same. Many of the characters show up, but vowel combinations--especially the "o" or "u" vowels--show up incorrectly or are unintelligible. Strangely, typing in Tamil font (using Anjal keyboard) in internet searches works perfectly, but ONLY in Firefox (?) NOT in the Safari browser. Prior to re-installing the InaiMathi font, which had seemingly vanished with the transfer of my data to the new hard drive, I was unable to type Tamil anywhere, not even in Firefox. Now it works only in Firefox. For example, if I were to type in Tamil in this window, it works fine: தமிழ் நாடு.
    Being able to do Tamil searches in Firefox as I had previously is really a major boon for me, but of course I'd love to be able to produce Tamil text, especially as I am about to embark on a 6 month research jaunt to South Asia.
    Many thanks for all your help thus far, and for any further advice you might have.

  • IOS6 JERKY SCROLLING, BROWSING WITH UNICODE FONTS

    Unicode font have been used for many years.
    We use Burmese Unicode fonts name Zawgyi Unicode font to view our language on web.
    We use special apps (Mogok, Myanmar Browser lite) for viewing on iPhone and iPad as this font is not embeded.
    They are OK to view all our language sites without problems prior iOS 6.
    Now with iOS6, the problem comes.
    Safari engine rendering for web pages causes those apps frozen.
    If we type email with this unicode font, it is frozen.
    Frozen means it freezes for 10 seconds on every action triggered from your touch.
    Imagine how annoying!
    Not even that font, Apple approved Myanmar Unicode font also have the same issue.
    I have tested it already.
    Here is the web link (http://chawsufoodfriends.blogspot.com) you can browse on iOS Safari and you won't see the language display but you will see what happening. If you download the apps that I have mentioned, you will be able to view the fonts.
    I can send you test email and see the problem in Mail App as well.
    This is not only happening on my iPhone and iPad...I have called my friends, and all have the same issue.
    So, it is clearly A BIG BUG.
    I love Apple products. But now I am very very frustrated how they manage, how they release products and softwares.
    I have never seen it is released recklessly.
    I don't find "Attention to Detail" anymore.
    We are now holding back and reviewing for our next gadgets.. Thank you Apple.

    I have a correspondence with a gentleman from Apple ( I would think he is from the developement team) and he said "I just saw your email with the sample text and confirmed that there is a problem reading the text. I will look into it and file the appropriate defect report."
    So now our case is noticed and it will be taken care of appropriately.
    Let's cross our fingers and see the wonderful result on the next update.
    PS. Whoever read this thread and if you are concerned with Burmese fonts problems, please submit bugreport at Apple.
    https://bugreport.apple.com/
    If you need any assistance on submitting report, let me know. we will help you out on this forum.
    Or you can find some discussion at this thread.
    The more we submit bug report, the more it will be noticed by Apple Developers and it would be taken care of soon.
    We will be very much appreciate with your help.
    Thanks

  • Openoffice/abiword unicode font

    I'm trying to use a unicode font with openoffice/abiword for some translations to ancient Greek. I have a unicode font that I'd like to use, but the only way I can get Greek letters is by going to the "insert special characters"-dialog and insert one letter. Needless to say, that becomes rather tedious. Does anyone know how to automate that? I'd like to just write the document like I do with English text..

    I can't get to terms with compose key. But I can't help thinking that this should definitely work with dead keys. The problem is that when I press a dead key and then space, or a dead key and then the same key again, I do get the character showing. But when I press the dead key and then a vowel key, nothing happens. This is true for all dead keys except the acute accent.
    I'm getting pretty desperate about this...

  • Double byte characters turn into squares at PDF export use Unicode font

    Hi all,
    We developing with Visual Studio 2008, .NET 2.0 and Crystal Report XI Release 2 SP5 an international windows application. We use the font Arial Unicode MS in the rpt file. We translate the fix texts with the Crystal Translator (3.2.2.299).
    On the distributed installation of our software, the printout and preview displays the double byte characters properly (Japanese, Korean, Chinese), but when we export the report as PDF, the characters get displayed with squares. This happens also, when the font Arial Unicode MS is installed on the distributed installation on Windows XP Professional.
    I searched for hours for a solution in the knowlegde base articles and in forum of Crystal Report. I found one thread, which describes exactly our problem:
    [Crystal XI R2 exporting issues with double-byte character sets|Crystal XI R2 exporting issues with double-byte character sets;
    But we already introduced the solution to use Unicode font and I also linked the font Lucida Sans Unicode to the Arial Unicode MS, but we still face the problem.
    Due to our release on thursday we are very under pressure to solve this problem asap.
    We appreciate your help very much!
    Ronny

    Your searches should have also come up with the fact that CR XI R2 is not supported in .NET 2008. Only CR 2008 (12.x) and Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio 2008 (10.5) are supported in .NET 2008. I realize this is not good news given the release time line, but support or non support of cr xi r2 in .net 2008 is well documented - from [Supported Platforms|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/7081b21c-911e-2b10-678e-fe062159b453

    Best I can suggest is to try SP6:

    Dang!  My crystal ball is on the fritz again.
    Could you please describe a little more about what's going wrong for you, specifically?  Clarify what you mean by "use Unicode font".
    Your question might have been meaningful if everyone was seeing the same, obvious problem, but in fact Unicode character codes seem to show just what's expected in Photoshop in general if the font you're using has the glyphs.

  • Flex3 Not Displaying Sinhala Unicode Fonts in the MXML File

    When I change the Keyboard to Sinhaha inside the Flex3 Sinhala Characters are not dispalying.
    But when I run the application I can see the fonts in the Browser.
    I am using Windows 7.

    Thanks Tom. Yeah, I understand that PDFs are not designed to work like word-processing files, etc., and the need to have the Chinese text copy over well is really just to prove that the document is searchable (i.e. if it can copy a short section of text Ok, then it means the characters are recognized by the PDF reader and I can search the document, which is my main goal.)
    The problem I mentioned with Preview, etc., is actually a new one; one that has become a big problem for me only in the last few weeks. Before, I never had this issue. I'm not sure what changed, but I was suspecting MacKeeper and their "language cluster" cleaning feature, where it "helps" you by removing unused fonts. Though, I can't quite confirm that this has played a role. I just completely reinstalled the OS thinking that this would fix the issue by installing all the original fonts again, if MacKeeper did indeed remove the fonts these PDF programs use when editing or saving PDF files. However.....unfortunately....the problem is still here.
    So, that developer I mentioned in the first thread who said this is an OS X issue may indeed be correct.
    And just to be clear, I have confirmed that the PDF's I working with do have the fonts embedded already. It is only when I alter them and then save or export from Preview, Skim, Nomad, etc., that the character information gets stripped out and I'm left with a document that one can read but cannot search. I can't even OCR it because this problem also affects my OCR software, as if it can't get access to the fonts needed to embed in the recognized PDF.
    Any other thoughts? I'd appreciate any you have.

    Thanks for that info!  I found a character map at
    http://www.wix.com/virtualconservatory/home#!menu/vstc1=character-maps
    It's a bit odd they would call these "unicode" fonts, since they replace almost all the required unicode glyphs with specialized music symbols.  Normally they would be called "non-unicode" unless they put all that into the Private Use Area.
    Glad you were able to solve your problem!

  • Font encoding problems when opening v7 in v10

    Hi, I recently upgraded to v10, but still have quite some old content originally created in v7. While the content looks pretty ok on screen when i open for instance a Russian file, it looks like total disaster when creating a MIF file out of it. Seems like somewhere in the process the whole encoding goes banana.
    The fonts used originally were HelveticaCyr Upright and Times Ten Cyr Upright. When I install these on my machine the content looks pretty OK on my screen, but I can't change the font to anything else without totally screwing up the layout. Changing it to any other font supporting Cyrillic (for instance plain old Arial) makes the content look gibberish again
    An example : Take following Russian word : Оглавление (means content for the ones intrested...)
    When I copy this word freshly entered from a texteditor into FM10 using one of the Cyr Upright fonts it's shown as ????????. Changing the font to for instance Arial makes it show up as expected.
    When I select the original word in FM (so looking ok on screen) and change the font to Arial it looks like Îãëàâëåíèå. Same behaviour happens if I copy the word directly from FM10 to any text editor. So, while all looks ok on screen when I open the file, I can't change the font without destroying the document, and worst of all, when I export to MIF all my Russian is converted to unreadable strings looking something like Îãëàâëåíèå
    It's driving me nuts, anybody has a clue where my problem is located ?
    Thanks in advance !

    Your FM7 document is using legacy "overlay" aka "code page" cyrillic font technology. The Russian text was created by applying the Cyr font in Paragraph Format, Character Format, or just as a local override, then typing the 8-bit code points for the glyphs in that font (which map to various accented characters in a roman font, as you see).
    What's encoded in the .fm file (and .mif) for that text is 8-bit characters which could be displayed as roman, symbol, dingbat, cyrillic, Thai, or other glyph families, depending on what Font Family is applied.
    FM8 and later, including your FM10, support Unicode (UTF8, specifically), in which every glyph, from every character set, planet-wide, has a unique 3-byte code point. No overlays. No confusion about whether any byte triplet is supposed to be a D or a gamma. The only issue is whether or not the font has that glyph code point populated with outlines.
    FM apparently continues to support legacy overlay fonts, as long as the font is loaded on the machine during edit (and this is as it has always been).
    The real concern here is: for FM8 and later, was any legacy-to-Unicode conversion supposed to be happening when you open a legacy document in a Unicode FM?
    I'm guessing that it doesn't happen, because there would have to be some dialog controlling how to map the legacy font to some arbitrary Unicode font. FM would have to know what the language (glyph map) was for the old font, and would have to verify that each code point exists in the new Unicode font - seems unlikely.
    We haven't needed to do this, so I have no direct experience with how it is supposed to work (I'm only watching the issue so we handle our non-roman special character usage in a portable way). This Adobe FM forum doesn't seem to go back to the FM8 transition period, and thus hasn't much content on this issue. There may be some work-arounds. Possibly FM gets a little more magical if your PC is set to Russian when you open the old doc in FM10.

  • IOS6 FROZEN ON UNICODE FONTS

    We mainly use Mail App, Safari App and our Language Browser App.
    NONE of them are working now.
    If email contains our Burmese Unicode font, it is frozen and quit.
    It is really frustrating.
    iPhone and iPad are garbages now.

    Certainly Solaris supports Unicode, the main problem is that
    Oracle-on-Solaris apparently is not as capable as Oracle
    originally thought. This "we don't do Unicode except on Windoze"
    is not their original story.
    That being said, our server is Solaris but our displays are
    Web/Windoze, so I've been staring at '?' for Unicode Cyrillic for
    years under SQL*Plus. One can install non-ASCII fonts on
    Solaris, but since that's not our production target we've never
    done so.
    What particularly do you need to do?

    I double check that  the font is already installed in the live server. Only difference I can spot is in Live server the actual Windows directory is called SIOUXSIE althought there is still a Windows directory. I have installed the Unicode font in both directories but still having this problem.
