Unicode support when round-tripping to XML

Hi all,
Last week, I posted a question on round-tripping the symbol font and got no replies...:-) I'm thinking the question was entirely too generic, so I'd like to now add a little detail of what it appears are my primary options as well as current issues.
We have a math product that requires the use of the Symbol font. I'll use the beta here for an example: b. I have tried several methods to get this to display in Frame properly, save to XML, and open back up into Frame, with no success, as follows:
o Trying to enter it directly somehow into the text, either directly or as the value of a user variable, discussed below.
o Creating an element called "symbol" that is set in the EDD to always display as a Symbol font.
This one doesn't make it to the XML -- which complains about the document containing unsupported characters.
You can explicitly apply this font in Frame and it displays properly, but it does not save to XML and then open back up in Frame. I thought it might, given Frame's supposed implicit Unicode support for XML (the dev and ref guides say you don't need to map anything in the rules or create any entities if you are working in XML as opposed to SGML). Further, I can see that it is defined already in the FrameMaker\Structure\isocents directory:
<!ENTITY beta    "β"> <!-- GREEK SMALL LETTER BETA -->
and also as this:
entity "bgr" is fm char 0x62 in "FmSymbol";
I'm not sure which is being used, but I assume my DTD does not need to define it.
So now I have assumed that you need to enter it into Frame explicitly as a Unicode code point, but I cannot figure out how to do that. Here's what I've tried:
Entering it directly as:
\u03B2
...doesn't display a Greek beta in the regular text, although I can enter it this way into a user variable, and a Greek beta is displayed (temporary Eureka!), but only as the value of the variable in the dialog box -- not when I insert that variable into the text, which simply results in a "?".
Using the File | Utilities | Hex Input enters only a "b" -- not a beta glyph. Although the user guide says you should be able to enter a Unicode code point with this tool, I can't see how to do that. If you manually enter the code point for the Greek symbol beta (62 for UTF-8), all you get is just that: 62.
Using the standard Windows Character Map does enter the beta glyph in Symbol font -- but this does not round-trip.
Entering it as "/b" -- not sure where I read about this -- doesn't display the glyph, but DOES save to XML as an entity "/b". Not sure what this means, but this entity only opens back up in Frame as a "/b", not a beta glyph.
We need to have the beta (and other symbols of course) display properly in Frame so we can print to PDF, then save to XML and reopen in Frame. Is this possible? Searches across all the Frame documentation have revealed nothing about how to do this, and I feel as if I'm complicated it unnecessarily, but can't tell how.
Any ideas -- or reasonable workarounds -- would be very much appreciated.
thanks,
Shelley

Shelley,
Whether or not a unicode character displays properly is a function of the font that you are using. If you specifed the \u03B2 codepoint, then unless you're using a Pro type OTF font, chances are that the glyph simply isn't available in that font.
Try using the Files > Utilities > Character Palette to see what's available (and also enter it by clicking on the glyphs) for the specific font that you are using in FM9. The Hex Input isn't the way to go for unicode values.
You might also want to look at installing the Quick Unicode Input tool available at: http://www.cardbox.com/quick.htm
[Addendum: WGL TT fonts may also contain the required greek symbols.]

when round tripping with photoshop cc, i get a saved psd file with my original raw,the problem is these are high file sizes and taking a lot of space, can i stop this?

That's not the workflow that I use. I have my Lightroom preferences set to create TIF images when going to Photoshop. I keep the original raw file and the TIF image (usually reduced to an 8-bit image) and only export JPEG's when they are needed to send to a lab or to send to someone over the Internet. JPEG files are highly compressed. I only create them when they are needed, and they are discarded as soon as they have been used for their intended purpose. I keep the raw file and the Photoshop-created TIF in my library. This requires extra disk space. But I always have the highest quality files available.

• Fireworks is arbitrarily flattening images when round-tripping

Here's the problem using Fireworks CS3 and Dreamweaver CS3. Have multiple people editing the images over a network. Sometimes you open a Fireworks PNG file from Dreamweaver and then click done. It's saves it as an editable image file some times, and as a flattened image file other times, no rhyme or reason to it just does it. (but not always) Any ideas? Anything I have overlooked?
This is slowing down our progress with the project CONSIDERABLY.

If the editable PNG file is being opened via DW and then SAVED AS or EXPORTED as a standard PNG while in Fireworks, you'll flatten the file. Make sure to click DONE within the FW workspace when the editing in complete, rather than saving the file. I've heard of this happening accidentally when both the flat file and the layered file have the same file names. Sometimes a user will open the flat file, then unintentionally save the flat version to the location where the original, layered file resides. Does this help?

• Wierd exclamation point message when round tripping back from Photoshop?

I have been using Photoshop CS3 for sharpening and other edits and have been hitting save (or just using a sharpening automation thing which saves the photo automatically) and I find that when I look at the new image in Lightroom it has an exclamation point, which when clicked says something like: "The metadata for this photo has been changed by another application. What would you like to do?" The options are "use disk metadata" "do nothing" or "overwrite" (I'm paraphrasing here).
First, does anyone know why I am getting this message? Second, what should I do when I get it? I've been selecting "overwrite" but I have no idea, really, what this whole dialog is about! Third, is there any way to NOT get this message?
Many thanks for your help!

Use Lr's help facility; it contains this entry:
Update photos changed by another application
In the Grid view, Lightroom displays alerts in image cells when the photos in your library have been changed by another application. For example, if a photo has a one star rating in Lightroom, and the photo has been updated to a two star rating in another application, you need to decide which rating to respect. Both cannot co-exist together. Lightroom lets you resolve conflicting photo metadata by either overwriting its data in the library with metadata from the photo or its sidecar XMP file, or overwriting the metadata in the photo file or sidecar XMP file with its stored data in the library database.
1. In the Grid view, double-click the alert icon in a cell.
2. In the Confirm dialog box, click one of the following:
Import Settings From Disk Imports the metadata from the photo or its sidecar XMP file, which overwrites the photos data in the library database.
Overwrite Settings Exports metadata from the library database to the photo file and overwrites the data in the photo or its sidecar XMP file.
Do Nothing Takes no action. If you select this option, be sure that the photos metadata in the library database doesnt conflict with data in the photo or its sidecar XMP file.

• Best workflow for round trip editing?

I understand that iPhoto does not support (yet) round trip editing, i.e. a RAW file can be sent from within iPhoto to an external editor but the resulting edited file cannot be saved back directly into iPhoto but has to be temporarily stored somewhere (i.e. desktop) and reimported into iPhoto using the Import function.
However, this screws up my "roll" filing structure, because the imported file is now part of a new roll and cannot be moved back to its original one.
Sure, I could process my photos before importing but this only postpones the problem. Indeed, next year, there will be an other iteration of Nikon Capture with new features and I will want to reprocess some old files to get better results ... and they will have to be reimported into iPhoto!
Has anyone come up with a suitable workaround that allows an imported file to be part of an existing roll or a solution to merge 2 rolls?
Thanks
Michel

Solved!
It's again RTFM ("Read The F*ng Manual").
Workflow would be as follows:
1. Edit RAW photo from roll, say "Xmas '05", with external editor.
2. Save modified photo as jpg version (so that the modifications are visible in iPhoto) to desktop.
3. Import into iPhoto (this creates a new roll, say "Roll 112", number is automatically assigned by iPhoto)
4. Select all photos from "Xmas '05" and "Roll 112" in the iPhoto library
5. Select Create New Roll from the File menu (all photos are now combined in a single roll, say "Roll 113" with today's date)
6. Rename Roll 113 into Xmas '05 and change the date to keep the chronological sequence
Voila! Roll "Xmas '05" has been updated (just tried it. It works).
I should have completely read the manual before posting.

This is a duplicate question which has already been answered in your other thread.
how to access editing of a publishing preset
What you were seeking was the Bitrate Settings/VBR, 2 pass in Premiere Elements 12/12.1 for
Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD with what appears to be Presets = MP4 - H.264 1920 x 1080p30.
That setting was found under the Advanced Button/Video Tab of the preset.
In Premiere Elements 13/13.1, Bitrate Settings/VBR, 2 pass is not offered.

I found the solution :
The database was running with a multibyte characterset (UTF8).
After changing that to WE8ISO8859P1 everything worked fine.
It is strange that Oracle suggest to use UTF8 when installing the new database (9i)
and on the other hand doesn't support multibyte charactersets for several of the XML-products.
Cheers,
Frank

• Network Round Trips when loading a Form - reducing Network Latency

I am working on a Forms migration from Client-Server to WebForms running on Application Server 10.1.2.0.2
Does anyone know the minimum number of network round trips that can be achieved when loading a Form?
For most of the Forms in the migration I am seeing 3 network round-trips before the Form is displayed and on Forms that use Webutil I am seeing 7 round-trips before the Form is displayed. Is this normal or are there ways of optimizing the round-trips down?
The Forms code has already been optimized by removing SYNCHRONIZE commands and TIMER commands and I have already refered to metalink note 363285.1 which gives lots of good advice however there is no specific information on the minimum number of round trips that you can expect for loading a Form.
Thanks for any help you can give.
Philippe

Ok, a bit of an update is needed.
There were a number of posts below that have been lost due to an accidental deletion but I shall try and summarize them here:
Tony Garabedian - Posted a number of code optimizations that he'd used for speeding up code when querying within a Form. Tony if you are able to re-post those that would be great :-)
Grant Ronald - posted some more information in which he mentioned that the extra pings are used to synchronize between the App.Server and the client. He also commented that a network that uses satellite was inherently slower and would therefore require a different front end to handle the increase in latency.
For my part I said nothing new other than ask loads more questions. I did mistakenly comment that we are using satellite for our network however upon yet more discussion with our network guy it turns out that we're using optical cable for everything. Out guaranteed round trip time is about 320 milli-seconds to Australia from the UK.
Currently I am left with the understanding that we are not likely to go below 3 round trips for most of our Forms and in the case of Webutil we are likely to be limited to 7 round trips.
Of course if anyone out there has any specific experience with this issue and can comment further please feel free.
Many thanks,
Philippe

• FCP quits when making round trip to motion

When I try to make to make the round trip with one or more clips to motion(using "sendto" and with "embed" ticked on), everything seems to work fine, but when I save the motion project and quit motion FCP just quits "unexpectedly".
When I then restart FCP, I can import the saved motion project, but as soon as I try to play it in the viewer, or I drop it in the timeline, FCP quits again...
Any advice ?
G5 Quad Mac OS X (10.4.7) decklink extreme

You'd be answering your own question.
The workflow for colorgrade has evolved over the last twenty or so years (in video) and over the last better part of a century in film as the final step, after everything was LOCKED. Its kind of why this application was first named "Final Touch".... well, it was sort of a clever reference to "Final Cut"... but... we know how that worked out.
It would be a bit misleading to conceptualize COLOR as a kind of really fancy 3-way, but the fact remains that as an external application, it creates all new media, independent in most ways from the original sources. We can understand that as an extension of the workflow from the days of linear tape-to-tape, when an entirely new, "Color-Correct" Master was created. Some flexibility can be built in to the return trip with the use of handles... but it can also turn into a whole other can'o'worms. Keyframed stuff can get out of sync.... etc.

• Pictures round-tripped to Elements are correct in Browser but not in Viewer

Hi all,
This is a bit weird. When I edit a photo in Photoshop Elements 10 (and then "save" and thereby send it back to Aperture), the edited photo shows up correctly edited in the Aperture browser, but it's uncorrected in the viewer. I always use the "Split View," and so the corrected photo appears among the thumbnails, but when I click on it, the photo in the viewer doesn't have the PSE corrections! Weird. This worked well for many many months, but now doesn't seem to work. If I close out of Aperture and come back in, the photos are correct in the viewer and the browser. Any ideas? (These are correctly saved -- not "saved as" -- in Photoshop. And it worked well for months. No need to discuss saving and round-tripping.) Thank you!

Mark,
maybe this is caused by this bug:

• Trouble with Round trip between Soundtrack Pro 2 and Final Cut Pro 6

I have edited a home movie together. I then have sent the sequence to Color for grading and then after completing the Color changes and Rendering. I sent it back to Final Cut Pro. It starts out working fine but during the transfer process it stops at somewhere between 50% and 60%. It is during the "Importing XML Data" phase. It just sits there and does not change and I have to force quit to get out of it. The exact same thing happens when I try to round trip from Soundtrack Pro 2 back to Final Cut Pro. So I am unable to make use of the changes I make in these programs.
This is a round trip process that I have successfully made many times before. Nothing has changed. I am working in Final Cut Studio 2 with the latest updates on an Intel Mac. Any advice on how to remedy this situation would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Thanks.
What's I've been doing is exporting the Soundtrack files as AIFF files, then importing them into Final Cut...
It's working... at least well enough. Still seems harder then just being able to go back and forth between the two applications.
Thanks for the advice.

• PI 7.1 Message Round Trip

Good day,
From rumors and small talk with fellow Netweaver technical consultants,
I heard that with PI 7.1 - sending message without round trip (sending message from one adapter to second adapter without entering the IS) will possible.
1. Is that true?
2.Where will the mapping take place if necessary?
3.Will our monitoring capabilities will remain (message monitoring,end2end, AFW monitoring)
If any of you experienced with PI 7.1 ,and currently not buried with development work, I'll appreciate you opinion\knowledge.
Regards,
Nimrod.G

Hi,

• PPro cs6 - Audition cs6 - PPro, round trip problem

I'm having trouble completing the round trip. I got my audio tracks from PPro CS6 to Audition CS6 without problems, right by the manual. But I'm having trouble getting that audio work back into PPro.
I'm working a mid-sized project (one hour class, two cameras, etc. headed for DVD). Got edit lock. Everything is done now except for cleaning up audio. After the audio I can send the whole lot to Encore for DVD making. But first, audio.
Took the entire sequence to Audition via PPro's "Edit...Edit in Adobe Audition...Sequence..." path. This worked just fine. It pushed all the audio files to Audition, Audition opened up and gave me a "make an Audition project" dialog box, etc. Nearly 100 files came over to Audition, on the right tracks, in the right order. Very nice. Made my changes. So far so good.
What I've read in the manual says that all I have to do when I'm done is "File...Save" in Audition, then PPro will have and use the changes. Sorta like Dynamic Link, but different. So I did the the project save.
At this point, things deviated a little from the plan. I started up PPro, opened the project, and no sign of the Audition work. Can't find a file anywhere in the project panel that says Audition on it. The files on the timeline are still the dark green of the multi-camera edit, not the lighter green of an Audition file. When I've done this for individual clips, I've gotten back a file with a name like "*Audio Extracted_1.wav" that shows up with the same green as the Audition icon on my desktop.
So I thought, fine. Not as easy as I had hoped. I'll just have to import it manually. But PPro doesn't seem to have any idea how to deal with a *.sesx file, which is the project file from Audition.
Should I be exporting, say, a *.wav file from Audition (how?) and import that into PPro? And if I do, is there a good workflow to re-sync this audio with my video tracks?
I'm confused. Don't know what I did wrong. Don't know what do to fix it. Don't know how to avoid this in the future. So any help gratefully received.
Bruce Watson

OK, now I *am* confused.
Just did it again (a different DVD project however), as described in my original post. This time PPro stayed open for me. So I sent all the sequence audio files to Audition via the "Edit...Edit in Adobe Audition...Sequence..." comman, then did my editing in Audition, and saved it the Audition project. Go back to PPro, and... nothing. No sign of any file from Audition in the project panel. No sign on the time line. No sign of any Audition file anywhere in PPro that I can find.
What gives? What am I doing wrong?
What I did get was a folder at the same directory level as my PPro project file, a folder in it with the project_name I gave Auditon when it opened from the PPro "Edit...Edit in Adobe Audition...Sequence..." command, and then two files for every clip in the project (a *.wav and a *.pkf), and finally two more files, a project_name.xml and a project_name.xml.sesx.
I suppose I can export a *.wav file to PPro manually. Worked before. But I'd like to learn the "correct" way, the way Adobe intends it to work.
Darned if I can figure out what I'm doing wrong though. Help???

• People Picker field and Web service -- multiple round trips to get Display Name value

Using Sharepoint 2010 and Infopath 2010, I have created a form that validates fields entered within the form by connecting to a .Net web service created by someone else. One of the fields that I need to validate is a People Picker field
for the Project Manager.
The connection to the Web Service runs correctly except that the People Picker goes through the validation process 3-4 times. I know this because I have a MessageBox showing the value for the InnerXML that pops up 3 times. The
first time the MessageBox shows no value for the XML, the next time it shows a name, and the 3rd time it shows no value.
Here is the code I'm using in the Infopath form (without the Messagebox):
Dim wsConnection As WebServiceConnection = DirectCast(Me.DataConnections("Validate"), WebServiceConnection)
Dim formNavigatorProjectManager As XPathNavigator = MainDataSource.CreateNavigator()
Dim wsNavigatorProjectManager As XPathNavigator = Me.DataSources("Validate").CreateNavigator()
strformNavProjectManager = formNavigatorProjectManager.SelectSingleNode("/pr:properties/p:properties/documentManagement/ns3:ProjectManager/ns3:UserInfo/ns3:DisplayName", NamespaceManager).InnerXml
wsNavigatorProjectManager.SelectSingleNode("/dfs:myFields/dfs:queryFields/ns7:Validate/ns7:projectManager", NamespaceManager).SetValue(strformNavProjectManager)
wsConnection.Execute()
The line in BOLD above used to have just /pr:properties/p:properties/documentManagement/ns3:ProjectManager
but I thought my problem might be because People Picker fields are made up of 3 elements -- DisplayName, AccountID and Account Type. So I changed the XML. Sadly, that didn't make any difference.
I am using the CHANGED event which a colleague of mine thought would have taken care of the multiple round trips. But it didn't.
Hopefully someone out there can tell me what I need to do so that this People Picker field only get validated once (The form also has Managed Metadata fields that have very similar problems so I'm hoping that the solution for the People Picker field
takes care of the MMD fields too.) Thanks in advance. Carol.

Hi Carol,
It is the behavior for setting People/Group field if you just select the node "/dfs:myFields/dfs:queryFields/ns7:Validate/ns7:projectManager".
Also you can try to only set the AccountID value of the People/Group field:
Dim wsConnection As WebServiceConnection = DirectCast(Me.DataConnections("Validate"), WebServiceConnection)
Dim formNavigatorProjectManager As XPathNavigator = MainDataSource.CreateNavigator()
Dim wsNavigatorProjectManager As XPathNavigator = Me.DataSources("Validate").CreateNavigator()
strformNavProjectManagerID = formNavigatorProjectManager.SelectSingleNode("/pr:properties/p:properties/documentManagement/ns3:ProjectManager/ns3:UserInfo/ns3:AccountID", NamespaceManager).InnerXml
wsNavigatorProjectManager.SelectSingleNode("/dfs:myFields/dfs:queryFields/ns7:Validate/ns7:projectManager/ns7:userinfo/ns7:AccountID", NamespaceManager).SetValue(strformNavProjectManagerID)
wsConnection.Execute()
Thanks,

Make sure your easy setup has the correct frame rate for your sequence. Seems crazy but somehow or other fcp assigns a frame rate to audio files. I've found this can sometimes be tricky to get right. Here's what I've done to force the issue. Make sure the easy setup frame rate reflects that of the target sequence in fcp. Create a new project. import the audio in the new project. And then copy the clip from the new project to your main project.
Good luck
