Unidentified files taking up space on the hard drive of the iPod

I am running very low on disk space on my 80GB iPod. I am using all the available space, and want to add some more music. However, on the UI in iTunes, it says that there are close to 2GBs taken up with "Other", even though I have nothing else set to sync with my library except music. It also says I have games synced, even though I have no games in my library. When I check the actual harddrive through Microsoft Explorer, there's nothing on the disk except for system files. Where are these two GBs of Other coming from, and how can I get rid of whatever it is so I can get more music on my iPod?

Hello unclesamb,
_The Other section on our iPod can or will include any of the following items:_
- Your iPod's O/S / Software (This will always be present)
- Any notes you store on the iPod
- Any external files stored on the iPod such as documents, etc
- Lyrics
- Album Artwork
- Games (this includes the default games that come with the iPod. *These cannot be erased* )
If your 80 GB iPod is nearly full of music and you have included album artwork for every Artist, track, album, etc this would explain the nearly two GBs of space taken up by the Other section on your iPod. However, it could also be the result of corrupt files on your iPod, but there is really no way to tell exactly.
If you feel as though the indicated size of Other is unusually large, you can always opt to Restore your iPod via iTunes.

  • Files uploaded to iCloud Drive also taking up space on local hard drive

    Hello all!
    Quick question:
Why are files uploaded to iCloud Drive also taking up space on my hard drive?  I want to use my iCloud Drive for cloud based back up of certain files.  I do not want these files to sync automatically, but to live in the cloud unless I need them.
When I upload something to iCloud Drive it also appears to be stored locally on my hard drive, as my available disk space is reduced by the size of the file I have uploaded to iCloud Drive.
    Thoughts?

In other words, there is no way to have a file live only in the cloud?
    No.
Just a short note in addition to Kappy's answer:  iCloud is not an additional external storage, it is a common storage for keeping the contents synced across all devices.
What you are moving to iCoud will be copied to all devices that are syncing with iCloud.
See this link:   iCloud Drive FAQ
With iCloud Drive, you can safely store all your presentations, spreadsheets, PDFs, images, and any other kind of document in iCloud. Documents you store in iCloud Drive will be kept up to date across all of your devices, and you can access them from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC.
Here's what you can do with iCloud Drive:
Store and access all of your documents in one place from any of your devices
Keep files and folders up to date across all your devices
Create new files and folders from iCloud-enabled apps
Work on the same file across multiple apps

  • Should I delete preview files to save space on my hard drive?

Should I delete preview files to save sapce on my hard drive? At times the program crashes and I wonder whether I should get rid of these files to make more space.

    PCNoviceMesa
    Yes.
If you run a SD project (whether you render stills or videos) and render, you are going to get DV AVI files automatically generated. If it is a HD project, rendering deposits MPEG2.mpg files on your hard drive (whether you render stills or videos). We are talking possibly GB amounts of files if you let them pile up long enough. For Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit, these preview files are by default in Libraries/Documents/Adobe/Premiere Elements/12.0 and in the Adobe Premiere Elements Preview Files Folder there.
First let us see how much is piled up there before we take action against them.
If the preview files there are part of an existing project or projects, the consequence of deleting those files is that you will have to render again that content in the project to get the best possible preview. If the preview files represent project long since gone, good riddance.
Please check out the situation. And, then we can discuss also pile ups of conformed video and conformed audio files.
    More later.

  • After having my hard drive replaced, I tried restoring files from time machine. The restore completed but I don't know where the files were restored to. I can see they are taking up space on my hard drive but I can't get at them.

My hard drive failed and so was replaced, luckily everything was backed up on time machine.
I tried to do a full restore, and it went through the process but I couldn't see my files anywhere on the HD. I tried again and same thing. Eventually I used Migration Assistant and this worked fine.
However my hard drive is now full - all my previous restores went somewhere but I can't get at them.
Can anyone please help, I need to delete them from my system.
    Thanks

Is the HDD in the 2009 15" MBP dead?  (The original source of your data)  If not, you might want ot take it out and put it in an enclosure.
You might try spotlight on know files to see if that gives you any clues where your data is located.
You might down load from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper (free) and open it.  It should show you all of the files you have on your MBP and enable to locate them.
    Ciao.

  • Deleted files not clearing space on my hard drive

I'm running iMovieHD v6.0.3 on an old PowerPC G5. Things have always run smoothly until now. When I started editing my most recent video, I had 191GB left on a 500GB hard drive. Whenever I deleted any clips, my trash file size went immediately to 6.73GB - 191GB Available. I edited this movie down from 45 minutes to 13 minutes and the same amount of space showed up in my trash (6.73GB) and hard drive (191GB left) as when the project began.
I thought I may just have a single corrupt/buggy session, but this is happening now in a newer iMovie session. Command+i on my hard drive still says it has 191GB of free space - after deleting almost one hour of video. All trash is empty and the deleted files seem to be gone. What is wrong?
BTW - I'm new here and not the biggest techie around, so please type slowly. Thanks.
    Kevin

If any part of your edited clip remains in your iMovie project, then the discarded part also will remain, whether or not you empty the trash. As Bengt points out, this is non-destructive editing. If you discard the entire clip, so that no part of it remains in the project, then emptying the trash will free up space.
A workaround is to export to your desktop the retained portion of the edited clip to Quicktime movie, and then import the resulting Quicktime movie back into your iMovie project. That creates a new clip. You can then delete the retained portion of the old clip, and when you empty the trash it will be deleted along with the edited parts that you previously removed, and space will be freed up. You also can wait until your iMovie project is completed, then send the whole project to Quicktime and import back in. Then when you empty the trash you will free up space. Further editing will be somewhat limited, however.
Note: Whenever you permanently delete a clip, be sure that you have a back up copy somewhere on your drive if you think you might want to re-edit it or reference it in some way.

  • Why is my Time Machine Backup Taking More Space then my Hard Drive?

I have a Late-2009 MacBook model with a 250GB hard drive.  My external drive is 1TB.  I use it for Time Machine backups as well as other storage.  My backups on that drive are a bit less then 900GB, which is 90% of that disk.  My hard drive is only 250GB so how is it over 3 times as large?  I would like to have more storage for other files.  What would you recomend doing?  Can I partition the external disk?

How time machine works is that it makes an initial back up and from there it scans your system for changes.  When it finds a change it adds the changes on top of your current backup. So if you have a folder full of pictures then rename them or change them, etc it'll resave/archive the pictures ontop of what it already backed up.  It doesn't keep a single "state" of backup.  This allows you to "look back in time" and see if you can find something you might have accidentally changed or deleted or etc.  Once the disk becomes full it will delete the oldest backups to keep archiving newer files.
I would suggest that you partition your external drive to a size that allows you to keep free the desired extra storage space you're looking to use.  For example partition the drive to two 500GB partitions one for storage one for time machine.

  • Something is taking up space on my hard drive and I don't know what is causing it?

I have moved everything ot an external hard drive but sometning is taking up space, I have watched a devrease of more than 10 GB within minutes and I wasn't using anything. My start up disk was almost full, within the 2 GB available range, I transferred everything and it went down a quarter of the way.

OmniDiskSweeper is a good program to see what's taking up space: http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omnidisksweeper/

Ever since I updated what looked like iTunes 10.6.1 my computer has been corrupted with Malware, which has filled up all available space on my hard drive.  What do I do to get rid of the Malware?

First, reboot. That will temporarily free up some space. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB free for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data.
Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To really see everything, you have to run it as root.
First, back up all data if you haven't already done so. No matter what happens, you should be able to restore your system to the state it was in at the time of that backup.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal.

heidie22, dj_paige has a very good point there. I would not through away the NEF files; I would archive them to a external drive.
By the way, I am assuming that converting RAW files to DNG is a decision you have made and not an accident.

  • If I bring in photos from Iphoto, am I using more disk space on my hard drive. I dont want to duplicate my entire file. I have 26000 photos in I photo.

If I bring in photos from Iphoto, am I using more disk space on my hard drive. I dont want to duplicate my entire file. I have 26000 photos in I photo.

You have to duplicate the photos unless you want to use PSE as the external editor for iphoto. In iphoto, your photos are stored in a proprietary library, which should never be messed with by programs other than iphoto. Writing to the iphoto library from outside iphoto is the fastest way to corrupt it and lose all the pics it contains.
So you can either set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from within iphoto, or you must export the photos from iphoto to be able to use them outside that program.

  • I have a 2tb time capsule wondering how to store a lot of my files and photos on it to free up some space on my hard drive on my iMac

i have a 2tb time capsule wondering how to store a lot of my files and photos on it to free up some space on my hard drive on my iMac

For iMac please use USB or even better a FW800 or if you can afford it, a thunderbolt drive.. on your 2011 Mac.
Time Capsule is not a suitable place to store your files.
    1. You will have no backup.
    2. TC cannot back itself up, nor can Time Machine backup network drives.
    3. Apple says specifically of iphoto not to store library on network drive.
    iphoto network no no.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
It's recommended that you store your iPhoto library on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing your iPhoto library on a network share can lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6692100
    4. Other libraries may not corrupt but will run very slowly. iTunes for example.
Please purchase the fastest drive out of the external ports you have available.. usb2 although the slowest is still faster than TC over gigabit. It is also more reliable. TC are not a noted reliable storage drive. It is designed as a backup location for TM files.

That is hard to say, as we do not know what you keep on your hard drive.
    To free space
empty the trash, both on your Desktop and the Aperture Trash,
Delete files and folders you do not need
Move files to an external volume.
There are utilities that let you find large files, like Omni Disk Sweeper, but that is not a free application.
