Unified Storage 7110 shipped with Cat5e cabling?

This is a mere curiosity question....we just received our new 7110 and I noticed that the included patch cabling, while beefy and well made, is Cat5e, not Cat6.
My guess is that Sun intentionally shipped it this way, I just can't figure out why.
It would seem, that on a core workgroup SAN device, you would like to have Cat6 over GigE connections.
Can anyone comment on this?
Thanks,
Phil

More than 90% market still run's on CAT5 or CAT5e....We've decide to go where the market is.
Supplying CAT6 will add product cost for 90% of peoples who do not require it yet. Special installation requires you to purchase your own cables.
When CAT6 will be more popular we will supply them and remove CAT5e.

  • Unified Storage 7110 - How to restrict CIFS access to certain hosts

    Hi,
I am trying to setup some CIFS shares on a 7110 machine and restrict access to them based on Host name or IP address. I have played around with the schema settings but have not gotten that to work successfully and I was wondering if anyone has gotten this to work or has any documentation explaining how to set this up. I have already downloaded the docs that you get from docs.sun.com and they explain what each feature can do but do not go into great detail on how to get it to work.

  • Unified storage 7110 for mixed environments

    Hi,
I've got my hands on a 7110, and trying to set this up sucessfully in a mixed environment og windows and unix/linux clients. The idea is that win-client is using CIFS and *nix clinets should use NFSv4 w/kerberos5.
I have sucessfully setup a Domain on a w2008, and got the 7110 to join the domain.
I also have one OpenSolaris snv_108 clinet and one windowsXP client.
I have some users defined in AD.
Now, I have tried to start the LDAP-service on the 7110, and that looks OK, but I start wondering - is that really necessary?
My problem would be uid/gid I think, of course I understand that my solaris client should use ldap, and kinit to get e krb5 ticket, but will I need ldap to be enabled on the 7110 to get idmapping to work across platforms?
It will be the same user(s) accessing files from different platforms.
AND - should I use UNIX-attributes in AD or not ......

  • Worth replacing my telephone cabling with Cat5?

I shall soon be having Infinity installed in my home office to replace ADSL. My office is in a detached building and I have a 20 metre run of bog standard telephone cable from where the BT cable enters my house to the master socket in my office. Am I likely to see any speed benefit by replacing this with Cat5e cable? My house is approximately 300 metres from the fibre cabinet.
    Thanks

    Hi Disco
As pippincp mentioned, for the network side of things it's best to go for CAT6 to future proof your network. For your office network you can ask the BT engineer to install the new master socket as the service enters the house. That way you will get the best possible VDSL signal. The modem should be sited there. The HH3 could be sited there also or in your office connected via the CAT6.
Yes, you could also use CAT5/6 for the telephone connection to your office. I wanted to standardise comms in my house so I installed CAT5 for the phone to another room in the house. I already had the cat5 wired up for the phone extension. The BT engineer installing my infinity was very helpful and wired the CAT5 directly into the backplate (user) connection side.

  • Lightening Cable that shipped with iPhone5 now not certified

Since upgrading to iOS7 charging the phone has become problematic.
I now get this warnng saying the cable or accesory is not certified this is the Lightening Cable that shipped with the iPhone so it would have a certified chip.
If I move the cable charger & phone to a different power point this sometimes allows charging.
I have a couple of questions that arrise having read about these glitches.
Is it possible that the certified chip has somehow been burnt out (possible in the iOS 7 upgrade)?
I have read that now the Lightening connector is now handed(as a result of iOS7) so there is now a right way up?
One persons solution is to pull the cable up firmly to the left side front and hold the cable in place with an elastic band whilst charging .
I do not expect to have to jiggle cables and change to different power outlets to enable charging firstly changing wall sockets in a newly rewired house would point more at a poor connection with the Lightening plug & socket.
There has also been suggestions that the socket in the iPhone can become restricted through lint (fluff) it sounds posible but why should this rear its head after the instalation of iOS7?
Were this the case then surley the cable would not be seen at all so there would be no chance of receiving a message informing me that my Apple Lightening cable (as supplied with the phone ) is not autherized ?
So is the autherization chip overly sensative to the effects of a reboot after the iOS7 upgrade and the succesive ones since and has become corrupted?
This Lightening cable issue is most tiresome having to waste time just to charge the phone daily & then I have the prospect of spending up to half a day getting to the Apple Store to see if this can be resoved .
Is this genuine Lightening cable(not been recognised) issue caused by iOS7 or the result of dirt in the socket preventing charging .
Assuming that the issue has been caused by a worthy idea of protecting the user from injury from non Apple accesories with a clever tweek to the iOS an immenant fix lke yesterday would be good .
I am not used to this from Apple products (they simple work) and hope that this is resolved rapidly since I am getting to feel like throwing my iPhone out of a high window or beating it with a large hammer .

The most likely cause is dirt in the Lightning connector on the bottom of the phone. Look in it with a good light and a magnifying glass. If you see any lint or other dirt clean it with a wooden toothpick.
After that, I would suspect the cable.

  • I'd to lengthen my USB cable with Cat5e or Cat6.  What are the restrictions?

I'd to lengthen my USB cable with Cat5e or Cat6.  What are the restrictions?  My iPad will live in my office upstairs and my computer is in a rack down stairs (about 50 feet away).  Will the iPad and computer connect at this distance?  If I use a powered balun will it help?

USB has a maximum limit of about 5 meters. To go longer than that, you will need multiple intervening self-powered hubs, though that can be problematical. Using the simple Cat-5/6 "baluns" may not work because they can cause signal timing problems. There are some USB extender products that can successfully use Cat-5 cabling over significant distances, but they're not cheap.

I believe your source for users/groups should ideally come from LDAP or Active Directory. The "Users" interface is primarily for assigning administration capabilities for the 7110 itself.

  • Snow leopard on macbook pro shipped with lion

A question from Sweden: Can you install SL 10.6 on a macbook pro that shipped with Lion?

your going to need another Mac that can boot off the disks, then T boot off the target Mac first so it's FireWire Target Disk Mode, then connect a Firewire cable then hold c boot off the 10.6 disk, erase the factory Lion machine completely and install OS X 10.6
The firmware will not you boot from earlier OS X install disks on a factory Lion box. You have to work around it to get it on the drive, but once it's there it will be fine.
I just did this, and did not have to Target boot at all. The machine booted right up off the replica 10.6.7 DVD, and was perfectly happy to install 10.6 right over 10.7 without erasing anything. No wacky side effects except a few settings had to be set again where Lion's settings were too different.
If you only have the "Full Retail" 10.6.3 disc, then you WILL have to use another older Mac as intermediary, since the 2011 MacBook Pro needs at least 10.6.6 to boot.
Mine was a refururb, and because it has originally been sold with 10.6, there WAS a 10.6 disc they could copy and send me. They muttered about "ranges of serial numbers". The "first responders" do not know these are available, so you have to be firm, but polite. The answer for your specific Mac may still be no. By year-end, the answer will always be NO.

  • What is maximum length of CAT5e cable that HH3 can...

The wireless signal is weak in our home office in the garden so I installed a CAT5e cable to give me a LAN connection to the computer.  The cable is 30 m long and I have checked the connections (from the LAN connection lead into the router to the connection lead into the computer) with a suitable meter which gave me green lights throughout.  However there is no signal at the computer.  I have tried all 4 connections at the HH3. I have connected my laptop into the HH3 using the same lead that connects from the hub to the socket in the wall that connects to the CAT5e cable to the office and it works fine.  I take the laptop to the office and but there it says there is no signal.  According to BT website a CAT5e cable can be up to 100m and phone up to 150m.  I cannot find any way of contacting BT that gets me to someone who might know (I did try their "typing conversation", with someone telling me it was 10 m and then eventually admitting they did not know anything about networks!).
Is the HH3 not man enough for the job or is there something wrong with it and I need to use snail mail to write to Mr Warren Buckley to complain?

    Maximum cable segment length:
According to the ANSI/TIA/EIA standard for category 5e copper cable (TIA/EIA 568-5-A), the maximum length for a cable segment is 100 meters (328 feet). If longer runs are required, the use of active hardware such as a repeater or switch is necessary.
I have a cable run of 50mtrs and it works no problem from a Homehub 2.
Are you using a patch cable or a crossover cable.Cables come in two flavors, straight through, also called a patch cable and a crossover cable. Normally when you connect Ethernet stuff like connecting a PC to a hub you would use a patch cable.
If you connect two like things together, PC to PC or Hub to Hub you need a crossover cable.

  • Where to find the fishworks appliance for SUN Storage 7110

    Hi,
we've got an old Storage 7110 we would like to re-use, but some disks have been interverted and that may be causing the problem: there's just no system booting up, hence no Storage interface available. All we got in the iLO working.
Is the appliance system supposed to be installed in one of the disks in the front bays ? How to recover or to install the appliance, which seems to be "fishworks" ? I coudln't find any full release of Fishworks anywhere, only some patches are [made available|https://wikis.oracle.com/display/FishWorks/Fishworks].
    Thanks

yep, thanks, there isn't even the GRUB menu left. It tries to boot a weired Windows 2003 which ends up with a blue screen ok, that is definitely wrong.
But is the original operating system supposed to be installed on one of the disks or somewhere else, maybe inside on a flash disk ?The 7110 uses two of the 16 disks that are front-accessible for the OS. The 7120 has two extra disks on the back.
By the way, what firmware should I use to upgrade the machine ? I found the the latest update for X4240 servers (SW 3.2.1) but none for Storage 7110. Is it ok if I use the X4240 firmware to update ? It proposes to update both, ILOM and BIOS (v68) but the bios doesn't seem to get updated (still getting xxxsomethingxxx64).I am not 100% sure but I think you should not upgrade the iLOM and BIOS on your own and they are included in the software updates that are installed via the GUI. So I think without contacting support it might be impossible to revive this system

  • Can I run a cat5 cable to a 4 port hub from a cisco router then connect one of the hub's output ports to an airport express to 'extend' my wireless range?

Can I run a cat5 cable to a 4 port hub from a cisco router then connect one of the hub's output ports to an airport express to 'extend' my wireless range?
    Flow would be
Cable modem---->cisco e2000 wifi router (This is broadcasting wifi but not strong enough)---->4 port hub ---->airport express (to extend the wifi in another part of house)
    thanks!

Yes, you can do this as you stated. In essence you will want to configure both routers for roaming network. Please check out the following Apple Support article that describes this type of network. Although this article uses two or more AirPorts, it can be done with just about any manufacturer's router.
