UNII-2 DFS Channels
I am working on deployment with over 600 3502i APs. The client device chosen for voice on this network is the Ascom I62. This device does not like to roam to APs using UNII-2 channels 52 - 64. I have removed these channels from the channel plan on my 5508 controllers under Wireless>802.11a/n>RRM>DCA and invoked a channel update.
A day later, I still have dozens of APs using these channels. Is there another way to remove these channels from the APs short of reassigning them manually? I tried rebooting the APs and they still retain the UNII-2 channels.

We have the DCA globally set to freeze. We set it to auto and then went into each AP that was on a UNI2 channel and set it to custom, then saved, then set it back to auto and it refreshed the channel to a non-UNI2 channel. We could have probably left it on auto for a period of time to let them change automatically.

Apparently the E8350 5Ghz channels are stuck to the US regulatory domain. Dfs channels 149 .. 161 can be selected, next to the global 36 .. 48 channels. In the EU this 149 range is not allowed, and most clients will not operate in this range.
Does anyone know how to change the regulatory domain, so channel range 100 becomes selectable?
thanks in advance.Each region is controlled and Linksys has to follow regional policy regarding WiFi channels for there OEM FW. If channels are not allowed in some regions, then Linksys has to abide by those rules. You might try OpenWRT or DDWRT if they have anything ready. WRT usually doesn't follow channel policies.

WRT600N Wireless n 5Ghz range much less than the second channel 2.4 Ghz
I just bought the WRT600N a few days back and have finally got it working so that all my devices (mac mini wireless g, i2eye Phone wireless g, thinkpad wireless b, etc... and Mac book pro wireless n, apple tv wireless n etc...) connect well and are working well from a close range. I went thru some of the same discoveries as some on this forum went thru. The 2.4 Ghz was the most annoying. I had to manually set the channel to 6 to get a number of devices to connect. That was after quite a bit of frustrating debugging.
My current setup:
All SSID's are set to specific names Use Mac Filtering without any security.
The 5Ghz channel is set for Wireless n mode only (Would like to get a dedicated 300 MB/s connection for the n devices. That is why I bought the dual channel router)
All other settings are default
I see it set on Wide channel 40MHz channel 38
Standard channel 36
broadcast enabled
The 2.4Ghz is set in mixed mode
It is set to Standard 20Mhz with a fixed channel 6
broadcast enabled
The problem I am having is as I go into my bedroom upstairs or in my basement the Wireless n 5Ghz channel is at best flaky and either the signal is dead or I get dropped connections. In many cases you can't even see the SSID. On the other hand the 2.4 Ghz signal works from all these locations fine and with even the furthest points in the house getting atleast 3 bars out of 5. However, many of these far devices are being used for streaming video and the b or g network is unacceptable.
I used to have a dlink mimio router and the b g network from that was as strong if not better. It goes without saying that I have scanned the forum for all possible suggestions.
The firmwares are the latest and greatest and the router now is sitting on top of a book case that gives it a good height and visibility. It however is in one corner of the house and I don't have a choice there. Fundamentally the problem is that the wireless n is not working from the same places the wireless g signals are strong?? I have played with changing the settings on the 5 GHz channel but nothing seems to work. My apple tv in the basement can't even see the wireless n ssid?? while the wireless g has almost full strength. That said when you are within a certain distance of the router the wireless n works well and is great. So it is clearly a range issue??
If I don't hear from anyone this one is certainly going back...

Need some advise here. My faculty of architecture decided to go all wireless this year. I've design the wireless network with a high density of 5Ghz APs. When a look at the stats, I dont have any legacy 802.11a device. Since I have a lot of user cramped in a small building and they need to send very large file, does it make more sense to use 20Mhz or 40Mhz channel. Right now, with 20 Mhz channel, I dont overlap but with 40...I've sure there will be some in the most cramped area. Advice....
Typical use a the network is sending CAD files(building plans) of 100MB to 500MB. Many one file directly from NFS servers...some could say that wireless is no good for this type of usage...but try gaining the authorisation to put wall jack in a historic building built in 1670.Hello Dominic,
The question to bond or not to bond, that is the real question. And my advice, BOND.
The 5 GHz side allows for many more channelsm even with hi density you can still design a network with limited over coverage. Lets look at the basic UNIIs.
UNII 1 - 4 channel
UNII 2 - 4 channel
UNII 3 - 4 channels
Just using the basic UNIIs you have a total of 6 channels to deisgn with, thats double what we have on the 2.4 GHz side. A few things you might know already, but will cover for good measure.
When you bond and take advantage of 802.11n rates you need to insure WMM is supported on the WLAN. You also need to use WPA2/AES. If you dont meet these 2 items, no 802.11n for you.
When 2 channels are bonded, 1 channel will act as your managment, meaning this is where your beacons will come out of. This allows legacy devices (802.11a) to see and use the medium if they dont support 802.11n 40 MHz.
Only problem I would be aware of, based on my expereince. Is neigboring access points that may also be bonding and causing you interference.

1532 Autonomous Outdoor link DFS and vlans issue
Hi all,
I have a fresh installation of a Point to Point (1km distance) link using autonomous Aps 1532 and directional antennas 14dbi.
The regulatory domain is Europe and the only usable channels are 100 104 108 112 116 132 136 140 (DFS channels).
The link is near military area and DFS is triggered very often which causes frequent disconnections near every minute.
From the logs i see that there is no available channel:

The second issue is regarding vlans.
3 Vlans: Data vlan 1 ,Voice vlan 2 , Management vlan 100 (native vlan for bridging).
After rebooting the non-root bridge data vlan 1 doesn't works even though management and voice are ok.
The workaround i found is to manually change the bridge group to different number.
After the change connectivity is comes back... (maybe bug???)

Regarding your issue with vlan 1, I can't see anything wrong in your configuration. This could indeed be a bug. I made a little research in the bug tool, but couldn't find anything related.
However, you should check the following before opening a case with the TAC:
check the logs from the AP immediately after a reboot
check your switch port status on each side
Is the bridge setting a loop in your network? I have worked on architectures with redundant wireless bridge uplinks using STP. A STP blocked port for vlan 1 could be a lead in that case.
Moreover, in your configuration, I can't see the usual bridge-group configuration under your subinterfaces. Not sure if this is of any use here as you have a 1532 AP, but I would try to add it for each subinterface:

I brought in my MBP to the Genius Bar a couple of months ago, when this spontaneous-restarting problem had been followed by it not starting at all. They did a diagnostic, and then took it for four days, only to return it to me completely wiped after that time with no explanation, other than that "a file" somewhere on my HD was causing corruption. The Genius told me not to restore any of the files that had been on it previously, and it would be fine.
Well, that makes perfect sense. But, I needed the files to be on my computer, and since I had no idea how to determine which file would be problematic, I decided to just restore from my last backup (from the previous October -- bad, but not the worst scenario) and hope for the best. Well, now this problem seems to be back, and I'm hoping to get some advice for how to help make it go away.
In the past couple months since I restored it, I've had it crash suddenly, causing me to have to hard-boot the machine, and when I run Verify Disk from Disk Utility, it fails and tells me to start-up from my Install disk and run Repairs to fix it. I do the closest thing I can to that, which is starting up my MBP in Target disk mode, and connect it to an iMac which runs Disk Repair on it, and then it appears to be fine, until the next time it crashes.
Now, the probem has progressed to suddenly restarting with no warning and no crash, mostly right after I turn it on, and then doing so a number of times in a row. The console message (I think?) generated from this event is as follows:

With absolutely no ability to read these kinds of things, I did notice that several of these messages in the console started with 'airportd[20]', or somethign like that. This makes me wonder if it could be a bad Airport card?
If anybody has any ideas on how this could be happening, I'd sure appreciate it. I keep taking evasive maneuvers (i.e. Disk Repair from a different machine), but the problem keeps coming back, sooner and sooner. I don't trust the Genius Bar to help me understand this, so I'm leaving it up to you folks.

Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -
What can I do in Safe Mode to fix boot problem?
MY MBP is giving me the "NOT" sign on start-up. This comes after initially displaying the Apple logo.
This MBP had a new logic board installed by Apple just two weeks ago -- and I know I can take it back but I'd like to fix this myself.
Here's what's happening.
BTW -- I put in a different hard drive after getting the MBP back. It has worked fine for several days.
Don't know if these points are relevant, but:
1. First thing I noticed today is that neither of the USB ports would read a flash drive. The port would, however, work mouse and keyboard.
2. The initial non-boot episode took place when I had external hard drives daisy-chained in via Firewire. But, again, this had worked previously, as recent as this morning.

3. The last tasks performed on the MBP were -- for the first time -- to edit video in FCE, make DVD in iDVD, burn IMG file.
4. I have connect this MBP as a target FW drive to another MBP and run "disk verify" and "disk repair" in Disk Utility. It says the drive and permissions are okay.
5. I have booted to a copy of Disk Warrior (latest version, version 4, I believe) and rebuilt directories and files along with verify/repair permissions (everything DW will do). And when re-starting, it still won't boot.
6. When I boot off Snow Leopard DVD and run Disk Utility…"verify disk" says "the volume appears to be ok"….when I "repair disk" it reports "Volume repair complete." and "Updating boot partitions for the volume as required."
7. I'm able to boot in SAFE MODE, but when I try to restart in normal mode, it won't boot (so nothing was automatically fixed)
What can I do in safe mode to address my problem?

Macbookpro was stolen/recovered - how to track accessed wireless networks?
Hi All,
I have a MacBook Pro that was stolen and then recovered weeks later from someone who was not the original thief... Is there a way to find out the names of wireless networks accessed in hopes this would lead to the ID of the original thief? I've been looking at Console log under Diagnostic and Usage Messages, and here I can see exactly when the machine tries to autojoin wireless networks that have been remembered (and this is very useful), but wondering if I can find out the actual name of the network(s) joined in the hours after the laptop was stolen from me.
Thanks for any info you can provide!

Open Network
Click on the AirPort connection on the left of the window
Click Advanced at the lower right
A list of previously joined networks will appear if the option to remember networks has been checked...unless this information has been deleted. -
Recently my MacBookPro3,1 has started waking up occasionally to grey screen. Very had to get it to respond even using the power button. I have the latest system software on an 800GB partition on my western digital 1TB internal drive and 4GB ram. Always plugged into 120 V as power.

Do you mean you get a normal startup chord, or an actual beep when starting? A beep would be an error tone indicating no RAM detected. This could be from having one RAM DIMM in a slot that has gone bad, for example. -
Mac OSx/5508/3702i dropping issue
Hi all,
I have installed dozens of WLCs but with this one customer rollout I have hit an impasse. The customer has a 98% MacOS device environment running a 5508 HA pair and 3702i APs. The Mac OSx users randomly lose access even when their device sits in one place within 10 feet of a below ceiling tile hung AP. Disconnects can't be recreated as no particular behavior seems to trigger the drop. Also for some clients there is severe latency(>1000ms) just pinging the WLAN gateway. Pings from Gateway SVI to AP are fine(<5ms) Debugs imply AP is too busy to handle an authentication request even thought the AP only has 10 users and an insignificant amount of traffic flowing through it. This issue is not dedicated to just one AP either as folks all over the 30 AP environment suffer similarly. Air Magnet shows no coverage holes. Windows devices appear ok.
I am more interested if this is has happened to anyone else and if anyone has had something that has fixed this issue for them instead of troubleshooting.
TAC case has been open over 4 months with escalation and Backbone TAC involvement with no luck.
Details:
- Mac OSx versions are random and those running Yosemite do have the latest patch.
- WLC versions 7.6.120, 7.6.130, 8.0.102MR, and 8.0.110 have not corrected the problem. (although fewer errors are seen in the debugs)
- Although APs are actually local to the controller, the customer has them in Flexconnect for HA and Bandwidth reasons.
- problem happens with Band Steering and also with Dedicated 5Ghz SSID (2.4 unusable due to density of APs using 2.4 in surrounding buildings)
- Clear Air 5ghz report score above 97%
- tried Legacy Beam forming, no joy.
- EDRRM is on
- Fast Transition is on
- Fast SSID switching is on
- Problem occurs with 20 and 40 Mhz channel bonding.
- 802.11k sticky cache has been tried to no avail.
- FUS is at 1.8 (I hear FUS 1.9.0.0 not only fixes the subsystem bugs but may iron out problems with the Operation side too)
- SSID running dynamic vlan assignment from NPS Server
- 6 SSIDs total
- No DFS channels being used
- SSID timeout has been turned off
- Data rates below 9Mbit are disabled

Problem happens to multiple versions of OSx, those running Yosemite do have the latest patch. Unfortunately I don't think disabling N is going to be feasible. Due to the High density rate there is no b/g to fallback on (2.4 Ghz is completely saturated). So that would leave users with basically just 802.11a? I do have a customer with similar set up running 5508 (v7.6.130) with 3702 in flexconnect. The difference is the1.9.0.0 FUS has been applied and they run Pre-shared key authentication. Where as the problem customer runs older FUS and Dynamic Radius based vlan assignment. -
Wireless Mesh Performance Issues

I deployed a mesh network with 10 MAPs and 2 RAPs which are 1522's (hazardous location APs) using a 4402 controller running 4.1.192.22M MESH.
First of all, I'm having problems with some of the MAPs taking sometimes a half an hour to join the mesh then drop out of the mesh and return with a "power loss" message. The power source of these MAPs is 120v power coming from a light pole which has a UPS backup. I'm assuming a small glitch in the power could cause this but I've been told by an onsite contact this is not likely.
Another issue I've been having is with the performance of the backhual interface. I have 2 RAPs with the same BGN but 6 MAPs use one RAP and none use the other. Some of the MAPs should see the childless RAP as a better path but for some reason don't use it. If I power cycle the RAP with children all of the MAPs migrate to the childless RAP. Is there a way to "load balance" RAPs without dividing the mesh using two BGNs?
Also, by default the backhaul power is set to 1 which is causing most MAPs to be the children of the single RAP. What is the rule of thumb for the number of APs that should be in range of the RAP backhaul signal to prevent a channel from being overloaded?
I've had an issue with the DFS channel selection flapping. First the mesh will converge using channel 60 then discover radar on that channel. The APs will then move to channel 157 and take about 10 minutes to rebuild the mesh. After using channel 157 for a while the controller decides for some reason to go back to channel 60 only to find radar again and move back to channel 157. Everytime there is a channel move mesh convergence takes roughly 10 minutes. Is this normal DFS behavior?
Has anyone else had problems with this or can shed some light on what's happening?

TimFor 802.11n it will drop off quickly, especially if walls and such are in the way.
802.11g drops off slightly less quickly, but it too will drop off.
I don't think you're necessarily seeing anything out of the ordinary, but you can experiment with different placement of your base station to see if that helps; sometimes it's simply something nearby that's made of metal that alters transmission patterns enough that moving the base station a few feet away will improve the signal drastically.
Speed is not just a function if signal strength, but of signal quality as well, and that involves interference, reflections, etc. -
I have deployed a WLAN utilising 9 1142 N AP's controlled by a 4404 WLC. The system works fine at 2.4Ghz, but for the life of me I cannot get a connection at 5Ghz using 802.11N. The a/n radios appear to be enabled, I have followed the info in the 1140 deployment guide. Currently running 6.0.182.0 on the WLC and my clients are using the Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN chipset.
Clients using the Intel 2915ABG can connect at 802.11a 5Ghz seemingly O/K.
Any suggestions appreciated.You could check whether you have enabled packet aggregation on the 802.11a radio.
i.e. "config 802.11a 11nSupport a-mpdu tx priority 0 enable"
Also, make sure you disable the UNII-2-Extended Channels. As some nics may not support the extended channels.
I believe this is in the latter part of the 1140 deployment guide. -
Random lock of every app particularly sono as LAN or airport is connected.
My MacPro random crashes freezing the screen at that point and when I try to open another application the finder locks at all. I have to reset at this point pushing the power for 10 seconds. I tried to install a new OSX in a new HArd Drive. It doesn't change. I tried to reset the MSC, PRAM, etc. As suggested by Apple support.
I tried to change RAM configuration, video card etc. Always the same. Please Any suggestions? Thank You....I Davis, I caused the problem connecting the MAC via wifi. Connected, I tried to update the MAC OSX and as usually It Locked...The same happens if I use the LAN. I recently saw this on my WLC logs and not sure it's meaning entirely and if I should be doing something about it.
Radar signals have been detected on channel 52 by 802.11a radio with MAC.....
30 minutes later, I received the clearing message:
Radar signals have been cleared on channel 52 by 802.11a radio with MAC......
Any info as to if I need to do anything and if so, what to do.
it's the first I've seen the message and haven't seen it since.
WLC 5508 running software version 7.6.100.0 (which has only been on the device for 3 weeks)

CaseyOn the 5ghz you are restricted with channels that cli exist with radar. This can't be changed since the FCC for example regulates this. You can disable the DFS channels so that AP's don't use these channels.

CSCur12358 - 1532 AP channel announce on DFS not working
I wonder if this bug is relevant to the ETSI domain.
From what I have seen we can only configure UNI2-extended channels for the mesh backhaul part.
This means we have static channels and not DCA (Not possible on the controller to configure DCA)
So channel announcement. What would that do for us ? I would say nothing! the channel will be unusable for 30 minutes
and we can´t change to another as the mesh backaul is not using dynamic channels. So I guess this bug
actually is helping. If it did the announce, it would take down other MAPs in the chain aswell. Anyone experiencing this ?.
I see that in my mesh installatoin with 3 APs. One of them keeps detecting radar and go down for 30 minutes.
The other aren´t affected. More on the bug details:
