Uninstall 10.6 with Macbook Pro 10.5 dvd & Time Machine

I will need to uninstall 10.6 and return to 10.5.
I have the Macbook Pro install dvd & backed up with Time Machine before I installed Friday.
Seems like I need to:
(1) Insert the 10.5 install dvd in my computer than restart
(2) Somehow I will have an option to boot from the dvd and then time machine - do i have to press a key to trigger this?
(3) Then between the install dvd and time machine the computer will return to its state at this last back-up I did in the hours before I installed 10.6.
Is there a link to a step by step procedure for this? I suspect there must be a hold down this and this while this is happening required.

Printerless, is there a reason you need to uninstall 10.6? If you are having printer issues, have you tried the CUPS/gutenprint drivers? If it is software incompatibilities I understand. I have found the instructions from the time machine help here it is: (Sorry it didn't paste to clearly.
IMPORTANT:Only use your Time Machine backup to restore your system to the computer that is the source of the backup. If you want to use your backup to transfer your information to a new computer, use Migration Assistant.

If you use a Time Capsule, choose your AirPort network from the AirPort menu on the right side of the menu bar, and then select your Time Capsule and click “Connect to Remote Disk.”
If you use a network disk, select it and click “Connect to Remote Disk.”
If necessary, enter the name and password you use to connect to your backup disk, and click Connect.
Select the date and time of the backup you want to restore, and then follow the onscreen instructions.
After you restore your system from a Time Machine backup, Time Machine may perform a full backup at the next scheduled backup time. This is normal. Time Machine will resume incremental backups after the full backup is completed.

I think you are not restoring your files in the correct way.
If what you want to do is to restore a complete Time Machine backup, you have to do it in OS X Recovery, so first hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting up. Then, choose the option to restore a Time Machine backup, and follow its steps.

Should I "restore" a new macbook pro retina from a time machine backup of old mackbook pro?

I'm considering buying a new Macbook Pro Retina. 15".
Now I'm using a 2007 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo MBP 15" running Lion. It works fine most of the time. Occasionally an application will freeze and I need to force quit.
It seems like the most convenient option would be to restore the new machine from the last Time Machine backup of the old. The benefit is that I'd feel confident that all of my stuff is on the new machine. The downside is that maybe glitches that had developed in the current system over the ~5 years would be transferred over to the new machine.
Or I could make a fresh start with the new machine and invest the time needed to transfer over the iPhoto, iTunes libraries and Documents folder and reinstall all the third party applications. I have an external optical drive to use the installation disks where necessary. The benefit would seem to be that any glitches that had developed in the old system might be avoided. The downside is that this would take a very long time.
What's the recommened method of migrating from an old machine to a new one?

Instead of a restore from Time Machine, I would suggest that you use Setup Assitant that comes up the first time you start the new Mac.
Connect the TM drive to the new Mac before you power it up
Then when the new Mac asks if you wish to recover from an older Mac say yes
Then select from Time Machine
This will keep everything in the system for the new hardware and bring over everything else.

Restoring my Macbook Pro system to a Time Machine back up?

Due to having issues turning on/off my a fairly new laptop, I had to reinstall my OS on to it. Before this occured I was backing up my computer onto a WD external hard drive via time machine. Now that the OS is reinstalled and my Macbook Pro is working fine, I am wanting to restore my system, preferances, everything on to it. I have tried using the Command-R at start up, the Migration Assistants and Time Machine its self to try and restore my system. But it would either not recoginze the fact that I have the external hard drive plugged in and there ready to go, or if it does recoginize it, it would not recoginze that it has any back ups on it to restore to. When I go to see the contants of the external hard drive from like the desktop/Finder it shows that it has a file of backups with contents in these folders of backups. Is it still possiable to restore my system and not have to start from the ground up? and how so? or at least use/retrive varies things from the backups if not the whole system??
Anything would be great, I don't want to loose everything and start from the ground up, when I had been backing up my computer.

Sorry to hear that you have been having trouble restoring your Time Machine backup to your MacBook Pro. I understand that you have tried a few methods including Migration Assistant, but your drive does not show up. In Migration Assistant, the drive may not show up as "Time Machine backup" and might just be called Macintosh HD:

After posting, I read & researched further. We're going to be limited by the hardware – the MacBook & external drive both have FireWire 400, & we don't have a 400 to 800 cable or adapter. So we'll connect by ethernet, & be patient that it make take some time.
I have to assume that Migration Assistant will be just as comprehensive regardless of the connection method / protocol.

Macbook Pro not saving local time machine snapshots

Hi,
First time using the Apple forums here but I can't seem to find a definate answer for my question.
I purchased a new Macbook Pro last week that came with Lion preinstalled. I noticed it was taking local time machine snapshots. In Time Machine it said Local snapshots, then backups each day etc etc....
Now it does not say local snapshots and they are not in my time machine timeline.
The only thing I have changed is my backup drive for Time Machine (3TB drive 600GB used now) so I do not know why my local snapshot function has vanished.
I know Lion is very new but has anybody seen this or has some advice for getting it back on again?

I am running Mavericks. I have not used Time Machine before. I am assuming I need an external hard disk or can I make a copy in iCloud? I have Parallels with Windows 8.1 VM. Will both those also be backed up? Thanks,

You can't make a backup of your MacBook Pro on iCloud. There's no enough cloud storage available to do this. Instead, make backups of your files on an external drive with Time Machine. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
By default, Time Machine will make a backup of all your files in the OS X volume. If you don't want to back up your Windows 8.1 virtual machine, open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, press the + button, go to Documents folder and add the Parallels folder to excluded items, so it won't be backed up

New MacBook Pro can't find time machine

I just purchased a new MacBook Pro and I want to restore my system from a time machine back up located on a Time Capsule. I am attempting to do this using the Set-Up Assistant. The process is as follows. I select from Time Machine or other disk and click continue. On the Select the Source screen, my Time Capsule shows up. I click continue and on the next screen the new MBP can not find a source as there is nothing listed in the source box. It continues to search but will not find my time capsule. When I click the Back button, I see my Time Capsule appear for an instant before it shifts back to the previous screen. My MBP is connected to my Time Capsule via ethernet cable and there is web access using that cable.
I don't know what to do. Any suggestions will be great. Thanks.

You don't want to do that by copying.
Your best bet, by far, is to use Setup Assistant. If your Mac is running Snow Leopard, see Using Setup Assistant on Snow Leopard or Leopard.

Migration from iMac to Macbook Pro using Migration Assistant / Time Machine

I have an iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo, with the latest Leopard version running. I have made a complete backup of my data on an external hard drive using Time Machine (only approx. 90 GB). I will be in New York next week and would like to buy a Macbook Pro. On the Apple website I found the following information regarding Time Machine:
"Migration with style.
To make setting up a new Mac even simpler, Time Machine shares its data with other Mac utilities. Use Migration Assistant to copy portions of any Time Machine backup to a new Mac, or select “Restore System from Time Machine” in the Leopard DVD Utilities menu. Choose any date recorded in Time Machine to set up your new Mac exactly as your previous Mac was on that date."
Is it really so easy? I only have to make a Time Machine backup of my iMac to the external HD, buy a Macbook Pro, plugin the external HD the Macbook Pro, start the Migration Assistant, choose the latest Time Machine backup from the external HD and set up the new Macbook Pro with all settings and applications? Really? If yes, that would be awesome!
Has anyone of you guys done this procedure in the past?
Suggestions and comments are welcome!

I've been working through this procedure this week. It's pretty good, and when it works it appears to work quite well, but there's still some bumps in the road:
(1) Once you've migrated, Time Machine itself seems to be a little confused and future backups may fail. You might have to start again by changing to a new Time Machine disk on your new laptop. You may lose your older backups, it's not yet clear to me.
(2) You can't restore from a previous backup during the migration, only the most recent one. (You can restore from an older backup using tools on the install CD if you need to.) I suspect this won't be an issue for you.
(3) Migration Assistant once you've logged in a Migration Assistant while you're starting up a new machine seem to work slightly differently. For example, sometimes the newest copy of the applications in your Applications folder (say, iMovie) is preserved, sometimes it makes an exact restore of the old Applications folder even if it's an older version of the application.
Overall it's been a pretty good experience, and what you want to do does work, but be prepared for the possibility of some issues. I tried this back in 10.5.0 a few months ago and had a lot of problems, things seem better now under 10.5.2.

Hi there. I am searching for the best way to do this and cannot seem to find out the correct method.
I just bought a new HGST Travelstar 1 tb. laptop hdd and I want to replace my current hdd in my Macbook Pro. I'm reading that there is a recovery partition and I need to make sure I create it on the new drive and also read something about making a bootable Lion installer USB drive.
I'm just really confused right now. I did this before on my old white Macbook and it was super easy. I installed new hdd, restored from Time Machine, done.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated! I've had the new drive for a few days now and would really like to install it because my current hdd is quite full.
If someone ould just give step by step directions I would be forever grateful. Thank You in advance

I want to restore my entire system from Time Machine and install a new 1 tb. drive in my Macbook Pro.
P.s. Is restoring from Time Machine the best method? I use my computer for music production and have many sample libraries, VST's, DAW's, DJ soft-ware. Obviously if I did clean install I'd have to re-authorize all those programs.
Should I upgrade to Mountain Lion. ?

You need to erase and format the new HD as OS X Extended (journaled), restore the TM backup onto it, and then reinstall Lion to put on the Recovery HD. Best is to do all of that in an ext HD enclosure, ensure that it boots the MBP, and then put it into the MBP. Once that's done and, if the MBP supports it, upgrade to Mtn Lion, which is what Lion should have been when it shipped.

No, you're missing the entire forest and the trees. Whatever it is you are trying to accomplish by hacking iBooks off of your system, it is not an informed decision that will benefit you in any way. To increase rather than decrease the load on iTunes by returning the book library view to it would tend to make iTunes worse, wouldn't it? Certainly, not being able to open your books there in any way can't be an improvement. If you have books that used to show up in iTunes, and that is where you want them displayed, then you have books that will be read on iBooks on iOS or OS X. If you're just shifting ePubs into some other reader on your mobile devices, you wouldn't put them into your iTunes library at all, and iBooks would be empty anyway.
And beside that, you're hosed in Yosemite with those maneuvers, so again, accomplishing absolutely nothing but scratching a very silly itch that is much worse as the rash you're creating. Did you delete the unnecessary keyboards and language files first, because that will save a lot more space. Did you cull the unnecessary kexts for your hardware? You know, things that actually do something valuable with a measurable benefit and no downside. If iBooks is such a pressure on your life that you have to get rid of it, how would you know? Do you torture yourself by opening iBooks everyday and then screaming in pain? If you can live without it installed, then you would not normally be opening it anyway, so it would have about the same affect on you as Migration Assistant or Chess, unless you deliberately sought it out.

You may have installed a variant of the "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow Apple Support's instructions to remove it.
If you have trouble following those instructions, see below.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. This procedure works as of now, as far as I know. It may not work in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for a more recent discussion, or start a new one.
The VSearch malware tries to hide itself by varying the names of the files it installs. To remove it, you must first identify the naming pattern.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
/Library/LaunchDaemons
In the Finder, select
          Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "LaunchDaemons" may open. Look inside it for two files with names of the form
          com.something.daemon.plist
and
           com.something.helper.plist
Here something is a variable string of characters, which can be different in each case. So far it has always been a string of letters without punctuation, such as "cloud," "dot," "highway," "submarine," or "trusteddownloads." Sometimes it's a meaningless string such as "e8dec5ae7fc75c28" rather than a word. Sometimes the string is "apple," and then you must be especially careful not to delete the wrong files, because many built-in OS X files have similar names.
If you find these files, leave the LaunchDaemons folder open, and open the following folder in the same way:
/Library/LaunchAgents
In this folder, there may be a file named
          com.something.agent.plist
where the string something is the same as before.

It's actually a folder, though it has a different icon than usual. This item always has the above name; it doesn't vary. Drag it to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Frameworks" folder or anything else inside it.
If you didn't find the files or you're not sure about the identification, post what you found.
If in doubt, or if you have no backups, change nothing at all.
The trouble may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
          Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
or
          Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
if it's not already checked.

My guess would be it has created an entirely new backup of your drive when you upgraded to Mavericks.

Okay, here's an update: the DVI to ADC adapter does work with the Apple displays that I have tried, but it won't work with the Formac. I have tried multiple time to contact them, but to no avail... they don't even respond to threats of posting my opinion of them, which is this:
DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM FORMAC! They make quality products, but their customer service is a big time joke! They won't take care of you.
