Uninstall Classic

Is there any way to uninstall Classic (OS9.2) without having to archive and install or erase and install ?
Thanks for any information.
Irene

Thanks for replying to my post, Duane and Sherman.
I tried what you both said and found that it is impossible to trash the System Folder without first trashing its contents and restarting, as you pointed out Sherman.
I succeeded in uninstalling everything, but forgot to uncheck “Start Classic when you login” in the Classic pref pane. This meant that every time I restarted I got the message, OS9 is not installed, so you can’t use Classic. Finally figured out what was going on.
My original intention was to do a clean install of OS9 after uninstalling it. I was having various problems with Classic applications which I couldn’t resolve. However, this has not worked out very well.
When I tried to reinstall it from Install disk2, I got the message that there was nothing to install. I assumed this meant that there was something on my HD which said that OS9 was already installed. I trashed the CPUMacOS9Z.pkg in Receipts and was able to install again.
But all is not well. OS9 seems to be corrupted in various ways. Many Extensions have wrong icons and are listed as “Color Sync Document Extension”. Extension Manager keeps telling me it needs to update info, although I haven’t changed anything. This results in having the same extension in both enabled and disabled folders at the same time.
I was able to fix the “kind “ problem and some icons by resetting launch services, but after using Classic applications everything reverts back. My original problem, not being able to download attachments with ClarisEmailer, has not been resolved, even with a clean install of CE.
So I think I’m going to have to do an archive and install after all. What I tried to do, a clean install of OS9, seems not to have worked and I wouldn’t recommend this to anybody.
Thanks again for your help to uninstall Classic.
Irene

  • How do I Uninstall Classic?

I originally installed classic on my powerbook g4 to use a couple old applications. However, I no longer use these applications so I would like to uninstall classic. I've looked in Apple support/help and on the internet and I cannot find out how to uninstall it! Any insight?

Hi, a mouse. Trash the two "Applications (OS 9)" folders and the "System Folder (from old Mac)". Don't worry about the rest — I would guess they're inconsequentially small (you can check on that) and will do nothing in the absence of the System Folder, but I'm not 100% sure it's safe to trash them. If they are inside any of OS X's own folders, I'd definitely leave them there.
The total amount of space you save by disposing of the main OS 9-related folders will probably be only 1GB or less, so in the grand scheme of things, what you delete won't make a lot of difference — unless you trash something that OS X needs. So delete the main items and leave the rest, until you hear from someone more knowledgeable than I am that it's OK to trash them too.

  • How to properly uninstall Classic?

I searched & came up w/ a couple threads that say to just drag the OS9 System folder to the trash & reboot, but when I try to do this I get an error message saying it's not possible because it's "required by the system". Also, ppl were saying to CMD+click & drag the Classic icon off the menu bar, but I don't see it anywhere to begin w/...... This whole process seems really sketchy, is there a more legit way to do this? There's no actual "uninstall"? I just needed to run one OS9 program for a short amount of time on my G5 & don't anymore so i'd like to get rid of it & free up some space...

Open the Classic preference pane in System Preferences and be sure you have Classic turned off.
Open the System Folder and drag the Finder and System file to the Trash. Restart the computer. After the restart drag the System Folder folder, Applications (Mac OS 9) folder, and Documentation folder to the Trash. Empty the Trash.

  • Should I uninstall old OS

Should I uninstall classic and or jaguar to free up space? If so how do I remove or uninstall?

What is the hard drive capacity and available free space on the Mac you want to install Tiger?
If you have no need for OS 9 and the Classic environment which will include any OS 9 applications, do the following to remove OS 9 and all OS 9 applications.
Open the folder named 'System Folder' (not the folder named 'System') and dump everything inside the System Folder into the trash and then empty the trash. Then delete the empty System Folder. Drag the folder named Applications (Mac OS 9) to the trash. Empty the trash and OS 9/Classic is gone.
If you have limited free hard drive space, this may not be enough.
If you have at least 3GB of free hard drive space (at least 5 - 10GB is better depending on how you install.
The Simple Upgrade method will require the least and the Archive & Install method (selecting preserve user and network settings) will require the most but either method will not require re-installing all of your existing applications.

  • OS X, Photoshop, and Classic...

I have a PowerBook G4, and am trying to install Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 for Mac. About a month ago, I installed Classic from the system CD's. I am wondering if this could effect Photoshop and its performance. Every time I go to open up Photoshop, it goes through the initial startup screen, gets to the "Building TWAIN Menu Items" in the run-up log, then quits. I can post the error log if that helps anyone figure out the problem.
Later on, I installed the same Photoshop from the same CD onto my sister's iBook with the same OS, and it worked flawlessly. The main difference I can see between our computers is that I had classic. I uninstalled classic, then re-installed Photoshop, and it still doesn't work.
    Any advice?

    Doubtful.

  • Uninstalling Mac Os 9

I have both Mac OS X and Classic 9 installed. How can uninstall Classic 9 from my hard drive and only stay with OS X? Also, by doing this will it free up hard drive space?

How can uninstall Classic 9 from my hard drive and only stay with OS X?
Do you ever use any classic applications? If so you don't want to delete OS 9.
Otherwise... you can delete the "System Folder" directory (NOT "System" directory) and the "Applications (Mac OS 9)" directory.
Also, by doing this will it free up hard drive space?
    Not much.

  • Are Classic 9 OS files necessary?

I hope this is the right place to post this question..
I've been clearing up space on my hard drive and deleting lots of files and programs I don't use etc..
When I purchased my little bubble, iMac Flat Screen, it had both OS X and Classic 9 OS installed. It's been years now and I have yet to need or use Classic (at least to my knowledge).
Could somebody please help me figure out if it's okay to delete all of the Classic files and if it is okay, what is the best way to totally uninstall Classic? Would simply dragging it to the trash suffice? Would deleting Classic somehow affect OS X? Are there any unforseen pitfalls to deleting these files etc?
Sorry if this is a bit of a sophmoric question; I just wanted to see what a few of you thought. Thank you for any help and advise.

Thank you for responding to my question, Duane.
There are no Classic OS files in my Applications Folder, but when I search for "Mac Classic OS" in my hard drive, seventy-two folders show up.
When I open any of these folders, it seems each one has a plug-in stored in them. Each plug-in has a different name.. for example, one is called, "Extrude", one is called, "Smart Blur" another "Solarize" etc etc.
Every one of these files has a differnt plug-in, but they all have the exact same name, "MacOSClassic"; Parent "Contents" ;Date Modified "July 10, 2004, 5:58PM" ;Size "--" ;Kind "Folder".
Is is okay to delete these seventy-two "MacOSClassic" flies?

    Hi,
The problem is an alias issue.
It is aliases that are stored in the Classic System Folder > Apple Menu Items folder.
It would be an idea to trash all aliases in this folder, but start with just deleting the Sherlock 2 alias and restarting Classic.
It worked for me. How about you?
    It was driving me MAD!
    Hope it helps you all.

  • How to uninstall OS 9 without deleting Classic running Tiger?

OS 9 has become unusable, but it works fine in Classic Mode. I tried doing a reinstall and doing a clean install. I thought it would remove the old OS 9 and reinstall a new version. Instead it created a preveous folder of OS 9 and reinstalled another corupted version of OS 9! How do I uninstall OS 9 without deleting Classic running Tiger? Then I want to do another fresh install of OS 9. How is this done?

Assuming you have windows, try uninstalling iTunes and all of its components as by following this guide exactly: Windows XP or Windows Vista/7, then reinstall iTunes.  You must follow this guide exactly or it will not be successful.  Note: uninstalling iTunes will only remove the application; it will not touch your iTunes library or data.

  • How do you uninstall applications in OS X specifically classic (os 9)

how do you uninstall applications in OS X specifically classic (os 9)

Do you mean you want to remove Classic (OS 9)?
If so, there's not much to it. First, be sure you don't need, or plan to use any OS 9 or earlier applications. You'll need Classic to run them if you do. Second, back up any files created with those older apps if you need to.
Once you're ready, delete the following folders:
System Folder (NOT System. That's the OS X system folder.)
Applications (Mac OS 9) (NOT Applications. Those are the OS X apps.)
If OS X complains that it can't empty the trash because "items are in use", restart and you should then be able to empty the trash.

  • Uninstall mac classic

is there a way to uninstall mac classic (OS 9.2.2) to make room since my hard drive is running out of room?
i no longer use programs that require OS9.
    thanks

radiohead62, Welcome to the discussion area!
Sure but OS 9 doesn't take up much room. If you are running out of disk space you will need to back up and remove other things.
Use WhatSize to determine what is using up your disk space. Then determine if you can back up and remove the big files.

  • Uninstall os9 classic

Will uninstalling os9 classic from Tiger cause fragmentation problems? I was told this by an Apple technician, who recommended I not uninstall it unless I need space on the hard drive (which I don't). Am I better off just leaving it alone until I replace everything with Leopard when it comes out? If I uninstall it, how to I correct any fragmentation that may result?

Will uninstalling os9 classic from Tiger cause
    fragmentation problems?
not unless you are very short on disk space.
I was told this by an Apple
technician, who recommended I not uninstall it unless
I need space on the hard drive (which I don't).
I'd leave Classic alone because it simply doesn't take up much space, and why remove it unless I know for absolute certain that I'll never use a Classic app again?
    Am I
better off just leaving it alone until I replace
everything with Leopard when it comes out?
Why 'replace everything' even then? The simplest upgrades are an update upgrade, in which the old version of OS X is updated by the new version, and an archive update, in which the old versions of OS X is placed in a newly generated Previous Systems folder and an all-new System is placed on your hard drive. I've done update upgrades on my personal Macs without problems since OS X 10.1.x. I've done update upgrades on other Macs, at the office and elsewhere, with only minor problems except in a few cases, since the same time. All of the minor problems were easily fixed. The more serious problems were because the Mac in question either had certain 3rd-party haxies loaded and the user didn't tell me, or there were serious directory problems, or both. Fixes were straight-forward, if time-consuming. And since then, I simply check out the volume beforehand to avoid those problems.
    If I
uninstall it, how to I correct any fragmentation that
    may result?
    Why bother?
