"Microsoft Virtual Machine (VM) Removal
By Kurt Koller, February 12, 2003.
It would appear that Sun and Microsoft have finally battled out this chapter of the Java saga, resulting in a situation where the Microsoft Virtual Machine will no longer be distributed.
Microsoft has a whole FAQ for developers, but they leave out one bit of information: how to actually uninstall the VM from your system.
Removing this is vital for me, because I need to make 100% sure that any migration I've done is correct, and the only way to be 100% sure that we're never using the Microsoft VM is to remove it.
Sure, we could port some stuff to J#/.NET and we are allowed to redistribute the VM with our products, but we'd rather just say good riddance. So here's how (but don't blame me if you trash something):
Instructions
Start -> Run...
Key in the following and hit return: rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall
You will then get a prompt to uninstall (a scary one telling you that IE will no longer be able to download files, which is bogus), choose yes, and then when finished it will want to reboot. Let it.
To remove the residual traces you may have of the Microsoft VM, remove the following (where %WINDOWS% is your system directory, usually C:\WINDOWS\ or C:\WINNT\ depending on OS:
* %WINDOWS%\java (entire folder)
* %WINDOWS%\inf\java.inf (may have been deleted by uninstall)
* %WINDOWS%\inf\java.pnf (may have been deleted by uninstall)
* Search your system drive for "javavm.dll" and remove it (may have been deleted by uninstall)
That's it. Then go install the VM of your choice.
If you have problems with IE continually telling you that you need to install a VM even if you already have one installed, turn off the option "Install on Demand (Other)" in Tools -> Internet Options... -> Advanced.

  • IPDS install error on a port other than 389

    Hi
I need to install iPDS on a port other than 389. During installation, when I give a different port and try to install, during the post-installation phase, I get error that the configuration information could not be updated and installation fails. I'm trying with iPDS ver 5.0. What could be the problem? I had iPDS installed earlier on port 389 on the same m/c. Can that cause a problem? I had uninstalled before re-installing on the new port.
    thanx and regards
    Sikka

Make sure you use a port larger than 1024, if you are using a non-standard port.

how do i install reader to a drive other than the boot drive?

  • Can I instal Reader to a drive other than C:?

Is someone able to tell me how to instal Reader to a drive other than C:?
I am trying to free up space on C: and prefer to load the Reader files into another drive, but I did not see an option to do that when downloading, and the installer just starts automatically without prompting for a target folder.

Use the offline installer from http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/ and click on Change Destination Folder

  • How do i install itunes on another drive other than c

I would like to install itunes on a drive other than c drive in a fresh install to keep it free from my operating system.Itunes is not currently installed on my computer, so i dont need to transfer anything or move anything and i dont want to put itunes on a external hard drive as i just simply want to do a fresh install on a drive other than c drive. Can itunes accomodate me in this simple task.

Install it normally, launch it with the Shift key held down, and create a new library on the desired drive. The iTunes application contains system components and therefore must be installed on the drive or partition containing the OS.

  • How do I have the creative cloud installer and apps install on a different drive other than my main C drive?

I have been having trouble figuring out how I can put the installer and adobe apps on another drive other than my C drive. Please Help me. My C drive is getting too full.

The CC app itself will always install on the system root drive as will several shared components. Once the CC app has been installed, you can choose a different install location for the main programs in the app's settings.

  • How do I install instrument drivers in folders other than inst.lib?

I am trying to use an instrument driver I found from NI.com and I am having some issues with it.  I want to put it into a source controlled location (that isn't checked in yet) but it appears that it wasn't built to allow it to be put anywhere other than the inst.lib folder.  Are all instrument drivers written like this?
I got the LV2012 version below.
    http://sine.ni.com/apps/utf8/niid_web_display.download_page?p_id_guid=0203928FCCB74C96E0440003BA7CCD...
When I move it to our source controlled location I get "Warning: has been deleted, renamed or moved on disk" error messages.  All I did was unzip the files from the zip file I downloaded to the source control folder.  Is there a way to "install" these files to the source control folder instead of the inst.lib folder and have it work without an error message?
I just wanted to check this before I spend a lot of time making the library and project find the files.
    Thanks.

Would putting an "inst.lib" folder under source control help if it isn't part of the absolute path that the library is looking for?
Nope.  They are looking in the special instr.lib folder inside of the LabVIEW folder.

  • Install OCS R2 on something other than Redhat AS 2.1?

I have a test environment I want to set up for OCS Release 2 9.0.4.1, but I'd like to do it on something other than Redhat Advanced Server 2.1. I saw a Note or something on Metalink a couple of days ago on how to trick runInstaller into thinking the OS is Redhat AS, but tonight when looking for this document I cannot find it.
Does anybody know how to do this? I'm downloading a developer edition of UnitedLinux right now, but I'm really interested in attempting to install the single-box install on Mandrake 9.1. One reason because I'm more familiar with that distribution, and also because I'm curious to see if it will work.
    Thanks,
    Michael

I've done it on red hat 7.3 - no issues besides relinking for the ias components.
    runInstaller -ignoreSysPrereqs
Can't rememeber the case, but if you run the runInstaller and pass an option or perhaps -? or -help it will show you a whole bunch of options.

  • Installing OS X Yosemite on other than main drive

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard (old fashioned, I know) and am happy with it- but tax software requires upgrade, so am installing OS X Yosemite.  Got recommendation to install on drive other than my main drive in case I want to stick with Snow Leopard- but don't know how to do that. My husband and I have separate 'accounts' on the Mac- so would installing Yosemite on one mean it wouldn't be on the other? If we end up liking yosemite, do we have to download another copy for the other account?  Also, what is the danger of installing OS X without backing up the computer first?

Sorry if these are obvious questions- but I'm having trouble understanding how an operating system could work on an external drive, as we usually just store files there and I assumed the laptop's operating system "took over" when you opened files from an external drive. Thanks for the help
You can install OS X on an external drive and then boot from the external drive. At that point you could unmount the internal drive as computer won't be running off of it.
One of the most popular backup methods is to clone your internal drive to an external drive. That way you not only have a backup of all of your files, but a backup of your entire system that you can boot from in emergency, i.e., your internal drive fails.
Example, your internal drive fails and all that you have is a TimeMachine backup on an external drive. You won't be able to use your computer until you replace the internal drive, because you can't boot up from TimeMachine backup.
Next example, your internal drive fails an you have a cloned backup on an external drive. You can use your computer by booting off of the external. And, when you replace the internal, you can use the cloned external to re-clone the internal.

  • Install OSX to a drive other than Macintosh HD

    Hi all,
Having just installed a new hdd in my G4 quicksilver, I want to install 10.3 to that new drive leaving 10.2 intact on my existing HDD.
The new drive has a single partition and is currently labeled "Deskstar".
Is it ok to go ahead and do a straight install to this drive, will 10.3 relabel the drive or use it's existing label for the system path??
    Cheers.

    Hi Matt,
yes, you can directly install to that drive. Just make sure you rename it to your liking before you install. You can rename it in the Finder or when you format it in disk utility. Make sure you format it as Apple Extended (Journaled).

  • HT1926 How do I install itunes to another drive, other than drive C

Please help; I would like to install iTunes in my "new volume E" folder and it automatically installs in drive C. I don't see an option to change destination folder or an advanced option. ty

If your library is properly self-contained then app updates should be saved in the iTunes Media folder. See Make a split library portable for details.
The other main issue will be device backups which are stored on whichever drive is hosting your profile, normally C:
    Relocate MobileSync Backup folder
You can redirect <Profile>\<AppData>\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup to a folder on another drive using NTFSLink (shell ext., might only work on XP) or Junction (cmd line tool).
In essence you move the existing folder to a new location, create an empty folder where the old one used to be, then get the operating system to link the two together and silently redirect any file operation on the old location through to the new one.

  • Can I install ios5 from a computer other than my primary computer?

I have downloaded the Lion update in the office and would like to install ios5 on my iphone and ipad before going home, which is where my "primary" computer is, i.e., the one I use to sync.  Can I install ios5 from any computer or does it have to be the one I have always used for syncing?

You can but if your office computer does not have your backups and iTunes Library from your home computer then the device contents will be wiped. I'd wait until you got home.

  • Installing Thinkvantage on a drive other than C

    Hi,
I have installed Windows Vista 32b Business SP1 from DVD on drive C (partitioned at 20G)
I want to install all Thinkvantage software on drive D under folder d:\programs instead of the default "C:\Program Files".
Please advise how to change the default installation folder of the Thinkvantage tools (System Update, Help Center, Production Center, etc...)
PS: Changing the "ProgramFilesDir" and "ProgramFilesPath" keys in registry file can partially solve the problem but it causes other problems in Vista ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933700 )
    Thanks

You can install Adobe apps on any drive you choose during install. Just be aware that no matter what some components will always be installed on the system root drive.

I'm trying to conserve space on my SSD (small) and just have the OS (Win 7) on that drive. So how do I install FF on another drive, as so many of my other application programs are stored? They work great without any hitches, so far. . . But I would still like to try this with FF and Thunderbird. Thanks.
