Uninstall Leopard

How do I go back to Tiger until Leopard fixed?

I have similar issues. Brand new MacPro, right from the factory, installed Office clean from retail disk. Excel crashes all the time. I have to save after every keystroke because of how unstable Leopard and Excel are together. Excel will eventually crash entire system, finder comes down, everything gets lost.
I too wish Apple would be working round the clock to fix a very buggy OS. Their marketing today seems a bit odd when I see how many people are going back to tiger, sounds like the Vista problems huh?

You don't uninstall an entire operating system. You reinstall the old one:

I own a Power PC dual G5 with 2 250GB hard drives installed. When I installed Leopard, somehow it got installed on my HD2 instead of HD1 where Tiger was primarily installed.
The problem is HD2 was just being used as storage and none of my softwares or contact info (or itunes library) were acquired by Leopard since it wasn't installed over Tiger. I have access to my old OS system (rebooting and pressing the option key) but I now wanna uninstall Leopard and go back to my old setup.
Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Luke

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select HD1 and click on the arrow icon. After startup open the Startup Disk preference pane, select the system on HD1 then click on the Restart button.

  • Cann't start up from Tiger to uninstall Leopard

I’m trying to uninstall Leopard and reinstall Tiger, However, I Can’t install Tiger. When I start up holding down the C key I get message I can’t install on this computer?! I installed it before and then installed @#%$^&&* Leopard over it. I’m using a Macbook Pro. I was going to do back up of computer and then just reinstall or install Tiger, but alas, I am not able, NO luck.

Try starting up while holding the option key. This should let you see all bootable drives including the Tiger Disk. Then you can use Disk Utility from the Tiger install disk to repartition it and then do an erase and install with Tiger.

  • How do I uninstall Leopard?

I want to uninstall Leopard from my iMac and revert back to Tiger, which it turns out works better for my needs. Can someone tell me a simple direct way to do this?
    Thank you.

what Allan meant that you should restore your tiger system from a backup you should have made before installing leopard. from your response it's pretty clear that you don't have one.
what you should do now is first of all make a complete backup of your current system to an external drive. you should always have a backup and it's doubly important before system installs. Use [Superduper|http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html] or [CCCloner|http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html] to make a backup.
    next you have two options.
    1. [Archive and install|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710?viewlocale=en_US] of tiger over leopard. downgarding like this is problematic and apple doesn't recommend it but it worked for some people. you won't be able to preserve your user and network settings so you'll have to go through initial computer setup after you reinstall. You'll be able to recover your current users and user directories using [these instructions|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2196?viewlocale=en_US].
    2. do an erase and install of tiger over leopard. this will wipe your current installation and give you a fresh copy of Tiger. Then migrate your data by hand from the backup. This is the preferred method. It's slow but safe and it's the best you can do not having made a backup of your tiger system before installing leopard.

  • Possible to uninstall leopard

    Hello,
is it possible to uninstall leopard and use it on another computer?
    thnx
    dave

"Uninstalling Leopard" is called "Re-installing Tiger."
And yes, you can install it on another computer. The license agreement allows for install on one machine at a time.

  • Can I uninstall leopard and install tiger without problems?

I'm considering purchasing a refurb iMac - I don't want an iMac mind you, but the Mac Pros are simply priced way over my head and I need a new computer!
I can't get a straight answer from Apple about whether it will have Tiger or Leopard on it but because of Adobe's refusal to make CS2 compatible with Leopard, I must use Tiger.
I've been told I can, if I must, uninstall Leopard and reinstall Tiger but I've also been told I'll end up with a host of problems doing that
does anyone know if this will work or not?
Apple is driving me crazy... no one will asnwer that question for me
and why they don't have a mid-range Mac Pro is beyond me but what do I know?
    thank you

    Hi liliths!
I look at the Apple Store refurbs list on a daily basis.
The longer you wait, the higher the chances that you will receive an iMac that was produced following Oct 26, and was therefore released with Leopard as the MINIMUM version of OS X. Currently, I'd guess that there is VERY little (almost zero) chance of that - today - but more chance as each day passes.
A refurb purchased now will have Tiger on DVD, and Tiger installed. The box will contain an upgrade disc that will install Leopard.
As time goes on, Apple will start to receive Leopard Macs (Leopard on DVD, and installed, but no Tiger) produced after Oct 26 that get shipped back from the stores after buyers have returned them. Those returns to Apple, and Apple's refurbishment process, do not occur overnight. Those Leopard Macs will not be able to run Tiger, or if they will run it, it will not be supported by Apple (no phone support/no warranty until Leopard would be installed).
Refer to this Apple Support article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25497
There are some (lower-priced) Mac Pros sold with the slower processor option, but they are seldom seen on the refurb list, and sell quickly when do appear. One would certainly sell within minutes of being placed on the list this close to the holidays. (A good alternative at a close price w/o sales tax: eBay 250194178376)
There are others besides Apple selling the older production Macs and advertising that they have Tiger on them, not Leopard. (From a third party, I very recently purchased a Mac Pro NIB with Tiger only.) Those units will be available less and less as each day goes by. I have purchased a Leopard family pack for possible future use.
Don't wait too long to make up your mind, or the choice will no longer be available for you:) A mid-priced Mac Pro might be one of the last G5s, so you might want to look at eBay item 120191603098 (I have no affiliation on either eBay item, just a bystander).

As to the question iMac vs Mac Pro or G5 - do you already have a display for a tower? A big factor in the decision.

  • How to Uninstall Leopard Upgrade and go back to Tiger

I would like to go back to Tiger and was wondering how to uninstall the Leopard upgrade without having to do a full reformat. Is this possible? Thanks in advance!

First, welcome to the Apple boards.
Backup what you have because it probably contains things from the original update you want to keep - network settings, passwords, etc. A bootable clone is your best bet - and test it out.
Then you need to format your HD (full, not quick) with the Leopard DVD and then reboot with the Tiger CD and install it. I am not sure how much you can migrate "downwards" from the Leopard backup, but some things will probably come along OK. Not sure about mail since it was converted by Leopard - will it unconvert? Don't know.
I have read of some who tried to simply install Tiger over Leopard but the results were less than great. You can try it once you have that clone backup, because you won't be losing anything.
I would suggest unplugging the clone during the erase and install process until you get to the migration point.

I have a brand new Leopard based MacBook Pro that I need to revert to its previous cat form of Tiger. Would you mind walking me through it? I have Tiger disks that came with another MacBook Pro so those should have all of the machine specific items I will need. As I understand this, I start the computer from the included Leopard disk and do a full format. (I noticed that there is a new partition style named GUID Partition, is this Leopard only?) Next, I load in my Tiger disks and install from those? I do not need to do any system backups as I have no information on this computer as of yet. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Brian

  • I GIVE UP!  Is it possible to uninstall Leopard and go back to Tiger?

I am ready to give up for now. Is it possible to uninstall and go back to Tiger?

If you were wise you would consider other options just besides getting rid of Leopard and throwing it away. First, you could wait until Apple releases OS 10.5.1, then install and update to it. This might help take care of some problems. You could dual boot OS 10.4.10 and 10.5 as long as you have the OS 10.4 full install Disk and the OS 10.5 full install disk. I personally will wait until at least Christmas time before I install Leopard. New OS's are always full of bugs. On the Microsoft side, I've read where Windows Vista is still having major problems and is taking a long time to become widely used. These problems take time to fix. When Windows XP came out nobody would upgrade to it because of all it's bugs, now Windows XP is considered the standard on PCs. Mac OS 10.4 was also full of bugs at first, but now we talk about how rock solid it is. Simply give Apple time to fix these problems.

  • How to uninstall leopard?

Please I need to get my Tiger back to open my saved files. How do I uninstall the leopard.

There's only one way. Boot from your Tiger installer disc. After the installer loads select your language then click on the Continue button. Proceed to the screen where you select your target drive. Select your drive then click on the Options button. Select the Erase and Install option then click on the OK button. Finish the installation. Upon completion go through the Setup Assistant. When you get to the point of setting up the initial admin account be sure to use the same user/short name that you were using with your Leopard system.
Once the installation is complete you can restore your files from your backups.

  • Uninstalling Leopard to start over

Does anyone know how to safely remove Leopard? It's been giving me internet issues and I would like to uninstall it and start over...
Not sure how to restore to Tiger and reinstall Leopard.
    Thanks

    Allan,
Great of you to offer some help...I posted some things in the Internet and Networking thread, but have not been able to resolve the problem.
So, i'm running an up to date G5, firmware is most recent, plenty of ram and plenty of memory. I put Tiger on the machine a few days ago and everything went smoothly. (thankfully)
After everything power cycled and I started exploring, I noticed the internet was extremely slow. (56k modem slow) So after a little bit of searching and a call to tech support...I was told that I needed to update the firmware in my Linksys WRT54GS and disable the speedbooster in it...So I updated the firmware and found that i'm unable to disable the speedbooster. That was suppose to correct the problem. However, i'm still getting very low data in and out. (activity monitor)
Looking through the posts, i've seen some discussions that were similar to my problem and people mentioned that network preferences sometimes don't carry over well to Leopard and a host of other "here's what to do" type stuff.
None of which has improved my internet speeds. So, I thought I would try to reinstalling Leopard using the "erase" method this time. But I just wanted to make sure I did it properly as to avoid any subsequent problems.

  • Uninstall leopard on my quicksilver g4 and reinstall tiger

I have run into serious problems with leopard on my quicksilver mac. I get the kernal panic. I have tried disk warrior and it shuts down.I tried to reinstall tiger, which ran perfectly in the past. It tells me that I have to upgrade panther to 10.3. and then upgrade to tiger. I had been running Tiger for 2 years but it doesn't seem to know that. I can't get into the computer to do this. I repurchased Panther and tried to reinstall it and it says I can not do that. There was a system error. Does anyone have any ideas for me?

It is very likely that your problem is not with the OS version you are running but with your hard drive. Try booting from an installer optical disk (preferably the Leopard retail one) & instead of running an installer, run Disk Utility from its "Utilities" menu. Try running its "Repair Disk" function on your internal hard drive. If this hangs or is unable to repair all problems it finds, you will probably have to reformat the drive. *Note that this will erase all data on it, so you must have a backup of at least your user files or you will lose everything!*
    Some background info:
Disk Warrior is a fine utility but like any other such utility, you must run a version of it that is compatible with the Tiger/Leopard file system to prevent problems. Additionally, if you try to boot the computer from a Disk Warrior CD, it must include an OS capable of booting your Mac model. Refer to the Disk Warrior web site for more info about this.
If your Tiger installer disk says that you must upgrade the existing OS, it is what is known as an "upgrade" disk, not a full or retail Tiger installer. It would not tell you that you have to "upgrade panther to 10.3" because 10.3 is Panther. It is telling you that it is only capable of installing Tiger (10.4) over Panther (10.3). Thus, if you have any other OS version such as Tiger or Leopard installed, it will tell you that it can't do the install.
All retail & some other installer disks offer several install options, depending on what they find installed on the target drive. See for example Installing Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard for more info about this. The option & target drive you choose determines if the installation is possible or not.

  • Uninstalling Leopard / erasing harddrive

We installed Leopard and then realized we didn't meet the system requirements for RAM.
There's been a ton of problems—so we're trying to un-install Leopard and we attempted to erase our computer's harddrive using: disk utility - erase - erase free space.
It looked like it was working, but after hours, nothing was erased!
    What happened?
    thanks!

All erase free space does is makes sure the free space is not (my edit) littered with pointers to deleted files. If you want to erase the hard drive to downgrade, you want to actually Erase Disk. I hope your data is backed up. If not, see the methods of data recovery here*:

  • Migration to Uninstall Leopard

I'm trying to get a MacBook back on Tiger from Leopard. I have the 10.4 Tiger disk, but what about this...
Can I migrate the Leopard machine off the MacBook to an ext. HD or other intel
    Wipe the MacBook
    Install Tiger
Migrate back only the "old system" folder files? Or just the library and prefs?
    I'm at a loss....advanced help?
    bluecool

Yes, you can use CCC to back up your current Leopard HD, but then after you reinstalled Tiger, you cannot use it to recover everything like you'd do with the same OS version.
Since you revert to a previous version of Mac OS X, you're going to have to transfer the files manually.
Yes, the paths: just replace whole new (Tiger) Users/username/Library/Preferences folder with the old (Leopard) one that you have on your Carbon Copy Clone, but save the default Tiger one so that if too many things get messed up, you can come back to Tiger default.
Importing back preferences etc, because I'm assuming you would like to avoid setting again all your settings in all apps etc.
    Otherwise,
only your personal data (photos, documents, music etc) should be reimported from the CCC backup, and this goes with no particular problem.
