Uninstall of Flash causing major problems

Hello -
I had Flash 8 on my computer, and back when CS3 came out I purchased the full suite and installed that.  Yesterday (years later, now) I was cleaning up installs on my computer to free space.  I used Control Panel to remove Flash 8 from my PC...
Now Flash CS3 still launches and works, but I cannot get .swf files to launch on their own at all.  When I double-click them to open them, I get the message:
The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.  Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.
I've googled to figure out what that means or how to do it, but I haven't found a decent reply that's been effective.  If I try to drag a .swf into a browser window (or just open it with a browser), it is also not recognized.  Oddly enough, I can view Flash files on web pages no problem (when browsing online)...
Some necessary components must have been removed when Flash 8 was installed.  I suppose I could try re-installing Flash CS3, but the problem with that is that I'm out of town on business for the next 10 days.  My Studio install discs are back at home, and I need to get work done this week!...
Any ideas???  Thanks!...

try reinstalling / installing flash player at http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/
Yeah - I tried that, but it didn't help.
or try Adobe Shock wave at http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download
Same thing - tried that also, and it didn't help.
and you could also try this is if all else fails:http://www.browsertools.net/SWF-Opener/
I just downloaded this upon your recommendation.  The .swf files open now, but they don't look anything like they're supposed to.  So, I'm not sure what the deal with this application is, but I think it may be buggy.  Like, for instance, the background of my .swf is all white, when it should be gray.  And the frame rate is all weird (not what it should be).  I'm sure the .swf is fine because if you preview the movie inside Flash it looks fine.
Any other suggestions???

Or just log into iTunes and your library would appear. Appearantly not because I lost over 3k songs can someone help me with this if possible.

  • 10.5.8 Install caused major problems

When I started this machine, I used Migration Assistant to move from a G4 to an Intel processor which apparently is a bad idea.
Finally, after 40+ hours of work and a half-dozen calls to Apple over months, I had to perform a clean install with 10.5.4, update to 10.5.7 and rebuild the data stores piece by piece. There were some problems, especially related to PERMISSIONS, but the new install seemed OK after spending another $100 on Disk Warrior 4 and rebuilding all the permissions.
Then (about 10 days later) I installed 10.5.8. Suddenly all my permissions were wrong -- I could not even use GET INFO. Spent four hours rebuilding what looked to be all permissions through the Disk Utility. Seemed that the major change was to "downgrade" permisions from 777 to 770, or something like that.
Seems generally OK, except now MAIL through IMAP GMAIL seems not to update properly.
Any known reason that a functioning machine suddenly needs to have all the permissions rewritten?
    Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the extensive suggestions. I always try to maintain two separate, up-to-date backup, one on Time Machine, one via Super Duper, in separate sites.
    Excellent.
Thanks for the details, but what you suggest is what I finally had to do two weeks ago when I did the clean install that left me with permission problems, defined as repeated interruptions with the message "You cannot do "x" because you do not have permission."
Then there are three possibilities: 1) you didn't really do the install the way I said to and it wasn't really "clean", 2) you've got some kind of skanky third-party software installed that is causing the problem or 3) you have a very odd hardware problem. From the error messages regarding permissions, I would consider #3 to be extremely unlikely.
I got Disk Warrior because it was strongly advised by one of several telephone consultation with the Apple Expert after I was having problems with permissions. He said it was faster and more thorough in repairing permissions than Disk First Aid.
I think you must have misunderstood. DiskWarrior does not have anything to do with permissions, it rebuilds the drive's directory structure. I can't imagine someone in Apple support would have told you that it repairs permissions, though I suppose that's always a possibility.
As near as I could tell over a week or more of relatively intensive operation, after I adjusted all of the permissions, there were no further operating problems with the Mac (other than one Eudora crash)
One crash is not equal to "no further problems," and just because you haven't noticed the problems didn't mean they weren't there. The number one most common cause of problems following an update is a damaged system getting further damaged.
Your advice suggests that instead of trying to run my struggling nonprofit organization I should just quit and take up management of my MacBook.
Well now you're just getting whiny. What I told you to do will take some time, yes, but not more than a half-day's work to get back to a state that you could work from. Either do it or don't, but don't blame the advice.
I have been using Macs since the mid 1980's and this is a special problem.
If you really had been using Macs since the 1980s, you should know that there weren't permissions until *this decade*. There also weren't regular updates back then, since the internet was not commonly used and typical connection speeds were much slower. So of course it didn't happen back then. However, these days it is not a special problem, though it is not what I would call a common problem.
I should add perhaps that simultaneous with this series of problems with my Mac, the Foundation had a disk failure on a Dell laptop, still under warrantee. It took us ten days of staff effort, PLUS four more days and $800 in fees to a local Geek shop to get that fixed and all that Dell provided was a replacement hard disk.
    How is this relevant?
I have been into my Annapolis Apple store twice during the trevails with the MacBook, but both times they were too busy helping people learn how to dial their iPhones to provide any real assistance.
Did you make an appointment? If you are going to bring a machine in for help, you need to have an appointment with a Genius. If you don't, you will wait. Or go home. You can make an appointment online at your local [Apple Retail Store page|http://www.apple.com/retail>.

  • Colour Profiles on exported images causing major problems

I've been exporting keynote slides as png's to use in video presentations. The problem is that the png's are saved with colour profiles, which means if I export the images from diferent macs, or even the same mac but with a different monitor attached (therefore a diferent monitor colour profile active), the images have very noticeable colour variations.
This is a major problem. I exported 1,000 slide transitions to import into Adobe Premiere, then about 500 slide updates that when imported, were in some cases darker or lighter even though I was using the same keynote and original images. I had to create a batch job in Photoshop to open, ignore the stored profile and save the images using a new default colour profile to try and get all the images consistent.
There needs to be an option in either the Keynote preferences or export options to save exported images without colour profiles.

There needs to be an option in either the Keynote preferences or export options to save exported images without colour profiles.
No, there needs to be documentation on the ICC architecture and how ICC profiles are applied. Stripping out embedded ICC profiles will colour manage the objects (images) in the system, but when the images pass outside the system they will not be colour managed any more. In this scenario, either they will have to be rendered as deviceColor by the numbers, without a definition of the colours their colourants should form, or a source ICC profile will have to be assigned by the following system/application.

I could be considered an unconditional bug in Keynote if it embedded the current monitor profile and not the system RGB colour working space profile (: Generic RGB Profile). If indeed Keynote embeds the current monitor profile, it could be considered an unconditional bug in your understanding if you start by stripping the source profiles. You should be doing a profile to profile conversion in order to get into the RGB colour working space you want in Photoshop.
Sorry, but it helps to have a basic understanding of media independent colour matching (even if the developers don't sometimes -:)).

  • 10.8.2 Mountain Lion Update Causes Major Problems

I'm running an early 2009 iMac and I made the jump to Mountain Lion about a month ago. Initial upate ran OK, I had some problems but overall it ran pretty decently. I held off on updating to 10.8.2 because I wanted to see if it caused any issues, but decided to go ahead about a week and a half ago. Since then, my computer has had daily problems. To name a few, my computer completely crashes when going into sleep mode and will not return, the sound frequently disappears and goes unrecognized. iTunes has been an utter disaster - I have an iPod classic, which as soon as I plug in causes iTunes to crash. I've had similar issues with my iPhone 4. Airplay drops regularly when I never had that issue prior. Homesharing in particular causes iTunes to crash, which was working infrequently as of just yesterday.
I've had quite a few issues, which over the past few weeks has rendered my iPod classic and old iPhone completely useless as I cannot sync them to put music on them (I restored iPod to see if that would fix it, but it didn't. So now I have an empty iPod that won't sync). And the workaround of using homeshare was viable as an alternative, but now does not work at all. Connecting to my Apple TV takes 5-10 times longer than it previously did, and the connection occasionally drops. I used all these features with a regularity which makes this extremely frustrating.
Not sure if Apple plans to fix this with iTunes 11 update, but I'm hoping something will come about soon. I called support to inquire about downgrading back to Snow Leopard, but the guy on the phone convinced me to reinstall the OS, which I did. It has not solved any of my issues (although I was finally able to update my iPhone 4 to the latest firmware, it will still not sync or do Homeshare). Any ideas how I could solve these problems? These all started happening the day I updated to 10.8.2 and, as I said, I hadn't experienced anything like them previously.

I have done that, several times.
So this is where I'm at now - last night, immediately after finishing a movie that was on my WD hard drive, which holds all of my media, music, movies - I restarted my computer and then it would not read the drive. It said it was unreadable.
I brought the Mac and the drive into an apple store today - they said basically it was my hard drive causing the issues. I used my iPod classic as my media back up as the 160 gb could hold all my stuff. Well, as I mentioned previously, that can't sync and I restored it, with no success. So in essence I lost my media drive and the back up. Tough to swallow, I'm angry, I think it's still mountain lion causing the drive to fail.
So I resolved to go home and restore my computer to one of my time machine back ups and do a Snow Leopard reinstall. Well, the moment I returned from the apple store, the time machine drive is now listed as unreadable. I called support, spent hours with them - I now have two drives which fried within 10 hours of each other in the same error. The senior support manager agreed it sounds like mountain lion is indeed corrupting my drives somehow. My iMac currently won't start into the recovery disk. So I went out spent $200 to get a new hard drive, which I am now backing up my data onto with a new Time machine.
In the last week, I've lost my iPod classic, iPhone 4, two external hard drives and now possibly even the Mac itself. I'm going to install snow leopard and see if it alleviates any of my issues, or hopefully can read my drives. I truly believe Mountain Lion is the problem.

  • ITunes 11.0.3 causing major problems with Safari and Mail.

I have a 2007 aluminum iMac with 4GB of Crucial RAM running 10.8.3, now 10.8.4.  Got an iTunes update to 11.0.3 a few weeks ago.  Since then, iTunes, Mail, and Safari can't be open at same time or iMac slows to a crawl.  10.8.4 update did not fix this.  I've run the Apple hardware checking program and all checks out fine.  I've run Clean My Mac 2.0, which didn't help at all.  I installed a widget to monitor internal temperatures, and they are not too high.  I've tried a Time Machine restore to May 14th, but it didn't seem to restore the old version of iTunes, but rather rolled back the desktop.  Please help!

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • ITunes 8.1 Causes Major Problems on 2 Dell Systems

No problems with version 7 or 8.0. Upgraded to version 8.1 on two different Dell XPS desktops. On one, both internal cd/dvd drives are no longer recognized (they are shown as not working in device manager). On the other system, two USB ports are immediately disabled (again, shown as not working in device manager). The first system is about 4 years old and is 100% Intel while the second system is two years old and uses Nvidia mobo drivers with the Intel chipset. I always keep current system drive images (Acronis) and was able to recover by reverting to the earlier image(s), but the problems can ALWAYS be reproduced by installing version 8 of iTunes.
This is a problem that should be addressed, don't you think? I can't possibly be the only one experiencing these issues - though many others may not relate iTunes to hardware problems. And is there no way to get Apple Support to respond to thesye types of problems?

I uninstalled iTunes on an XP Pro SP3 system. The OS failed to recognize the CD with an error code 39 "The driver failed to load" etc.
I found and successfully implemented the following solution at this link:
    http://www.geekswhoknow.com/articles/top10_dvd_and_cd_driveproblems.htm
It was problem #5 in their list.
    5. Problem: XP - Cannot access the CD or DVD drive after an uninstall.
    a. Start Registry editor as in Step 4 (just start regedit)
    b. Locate MyComputer and then HKEYLOCALMACHINE
    c. Expand System->CurrentControlSet->Control->Class
    d. Click the subkey {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
    e. In the right pane, choose UpperFilters (ignore UpperFilters.back entry if present)
    f. On the Edit menu, click Delete
    g. Similarly delete the LowerFilters key in subkey {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
    h. Exit Registry Editor
    i. Restart the computer
    j. If the CD recording program does not work, re-install it and try again.

  • Flash causing Windows problems.

I had a problem with my Windows not working correctly, with the following errors:  The topmost window that was open could not be minimized or closed without having Task Manager opened and with it as the topmost window; the Start Menu bar wouldn't come up from being hidden when I moved my mouse down to it without, again, opening Task Manager and having it open onscreen first; drop down menu choices don't work, regardless of Task Manager, without my using the arrow buttons to make my choice highlighted.  Now, we inserted a brand new hard drive, installed Windows fresh on the new drive, dleted EVERYTHING off the old hard drive, and as soon as I installed Flash, the problem immediately started again.  Also, in addition to this, a couple of our graphics drivers files were corrupted, and while they were fixed the issue remained.  This corruption took place on both hard drives after the problem began.  Finally, I at one point started messing around with screen resolutions and text sizes, and for a while the computer worked just fine after that...until I put it to sleep for a couple of hours, upon which the problem manifested itself wholly again.
    HELP!!!!

Well, closing and resizing windows is purely an OS function. Flash Player (in spite of what you're seeing) has absolutely NOTHING to do with Windows GUI operations. It's a browser plugin, which means it ONLY operates in your browser and ONLY on pages that contain Flash media. EVERYTHING else outside of that is your OS and other software.
Additionally Flash Player utilizes audio and video drivers through the browser, but it cannot and does not modify them in any imaginable way. If your drivers were corrupted on a new OS install, I'd submit that they needed to be updated BEFORE you installed anything on the system. I do about a dozen "reloads" a month for people and the FIRST thing I do after Windows is installed, is run Windows and driver updates until the OS is FULLY up to date. That's before the first piece of third-party software ever goes onto the HD.
The fact that it goes awry coming out of sleep (I assume with the browser and Flash Player not running when it was put to sleep) would further indicate some serious OS issues, since Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) would be the ONLY thing running upon waking the system.

  • Xorg & Catalyst updates cause major problems here

I went through the other similar threads and tried just about everything without luck... The latest Xorg & Catalist updates cause lots of problems on my desktop.
The video card is an ATI X300.
Without a xorg.conf, X server starts and things work, more or less - but much slower than they used to. It's pretty clear fglrx is not actually used, xv doesn't work, fglrxinfo gives:
Error: unable to open display (null)
With the previous xorg.conf (the one wich worked fine before the updates), X doesn't start (even after commenting out the "RgbPath" line and adding Option "AutoAddDevices" "false") and the log shows many fglrx errors such as:
(EE) fglrx(0): Unknown EDID version 0
    (EE) fglrx(0): ===[swlDalHelperAddCustomizeMode] === CWDDEDI_DisplayGetSetModeTimingOverride failed: 7
    X -configure won't generate a xorg.conf
    Fatal server error:
    Caught signal 11. Server aborting
    In conclusion:
    - without a xorg.conf fglrx doesn't work although X server starts
    - with an old xorg.conf fglrx will generate errors and X server will not start
    Any ideas?

  • I have accidently  established two (2) iclouds accts. This is causing major problems.  How do I delete one acct?? Also today I tried to sync my Blackberry 9930 with the BB Desktop software and I lost all my addresses on my BB phone

I lost all of my contacts on my Blackberry 9930 phone while trying to sync it with the Blackberry Desktop software since I upgrade from Mobile me to ICloud on my Mac book.  It seems that the Desktop Software can't recognise ICloud contacts/Groups and my calendar will now not sync either.  My husband has a Mac Pro and a Blackberry and is having the same problems.
I some how have two (2) icloud accounts.  How can I delete one???  Please help!

You can't actually delete an iCloud account but you can remove it by signing out at System Preferences>iCloud if it is the promary account, or in Mail, Contacts & Calendars if the secondary, and then juste ignore it.
The Blackeberry can only sync with data held under 'On My Mac'. iCloud can only sync with data under 'iCloud'.
When you set up iCloud your calendars and contacts were moved to the iCloud server. If you want to use Blackberry you will have to move them back to 'On My Mac' and not sync with iCloud: it's one or the other.
To move calendars, follow the second set of numbered instructions here:
    http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudmovecalendars.html
To move contacts, File>Export as vCard when you have selected all your contacts, then delete the contacts under iCloud, make 'On My Mac' the default and reimport the vCard.

Strange things have happened to my computer after the 10.6.6 update:
    1) My system already had Snow Leopard installed, but now when I go to "About this Mac" it has mysteriously downgraded to 10.5.8.
    2) A folder with question mark icon appears at bootup before Apple logo.
    3) Large amount of permission errors that can't be fixed via Disk Utility (see below).

It didn't do anything to Front Row on my computer. I doubt it did anything on yours, either.
    1) Update wouldn't have done that. There is no code in the update to replace that string with 10.5.8.
    2) Your boot files are messed up or non-existent. Very rarely this can be fixed without reinstalling the system.
    3) There are always a lot of permissions that can't be repaired by DU because they don't need to be repaired. They're not broken, just different. Did you check permissions before you applied the update?
    4) Sounds like you have serious hardware problems. With the Snow Leopard disk installed, can you restart while holding down Option key and get to the startup manager? If so, pick the Snow Leopard disk and boot from it. Use Disk Utility in the Utilities menu (available after selecting a language) and repair the disk. Don't repair permissions from that disk.
If it finds errors and fixes them, try booting from the hard drive. You may have to re-install Snow Leopard.

  • 10.4.9 Update Caused Major Problems

I was downloading the new update, and at some point during it (I believe when it was installing), it popped up with an error and said that the package had been moved to the Trash. I didn't think much of it, figuring I would just download it again later. But after that I couldn't open any new apps, and when I tried to empty the trash it never went past "Preparing to empty the trash...".
So I tried to restart, but Finder wouldn't close because it was still trying to empty the trash(I couldn't close the empty trash dialog). So I turned it off with the power button, and now when I try to start up it won't go past the Apple logo on the gray background.
Any ideas on what happened or what I can do? I'm reluctant to take it in for service because the closest store is hours away and I need the computer for school.

  • Very disappointed that Lion is causing major problems with disable students assistive software in the UK. Software suppliers are not issuing patches/upgrades until 2012. Totally unacceptable attitude from Apple in ignoring disabled customers

This is going to affect a large number of disabled UK students as patches and upgrades for the specialist software are not due for release until late 2011/early 2012.
Only options they have is to revert to Snow leopard, defficult as Apple have even recall resellers stock and upgraded it to Lion.
I am contacting the UK educational funding bodies with a view to suspending purchasing of all Apple equipment until such time as the situation has resolved itself.

Ikrups says "Speaking of getting one's professional act together I would take a look in the mirror if I were you. A professional responsible for maintaining the computer equipment and network of a school system would certainly perform extensive testing of any new operating system upgrade before deploying it. Even the smallest corporations don't just upgrade software willy-nilly. If you had thought to set up a test system and verified what software worked and what didn't before deploying Lion to the entire system you would have been protecting your students from these issues. A professional would have discovered these issues and delayed deployment of Lion until the patches you mention were available. But you didn't and now you are trying to deflect blame from yourself and your staff. And you dare to accuse Apple of incompetence. I call hypocrisy"
I seem to have ruffled a couple of feathers. I do not remember saying I was responsible for computer systems/networks/school systems. Or accusing Apple of incompetence.
All I did was state that Apple seems to have forgotten or is not aware about the potential impact of Lion on disabled students in the UK and both apple and the assistive software suppliers failed to act together over this omission.
During our research prior to the launch of Lion we as a specialist group had identified 22 of the 40 applications used in assistive software that had 'Problems' this was communicated to all interested parties. Still waiting for the 'FIX'
FYI ALL parties have had similar notices on their BB's NOT just Apple.
despite being given 2 ears and 1 mouth some people do not listen twice as much as they speak.
