Uninstall Reader X - Patch package could not be opened.

I am trying to uninstall Reader X in hopes that when I reinstall it some other issues will clear up.  However, when clicking remove or update in Control Panel, I get the same result.  "This patch package could not be opened...."  Same message I have seen in a host of other postings.
Can I follow the same general instructions for manual uninstall that are in the knowledge base for Reader 8?  Are there any additional steps/registry modifications?  I am running XP/SP3.

You could try using the Windows  Installer Cleanup Utility to remove all traces of any existing versions  of Reader.  This utility is no longer supported by Microsoft because it can conflict with Win 7,  but you  can still find it in sites like http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459

Any idea of what I need to do?

Thanks for your interest in my problem.  My operating system is Windows
XP.    I had an older version of Adobe Reader installed, but recently, my
computer became unable to view pdf files.  So I decided to try to update
my version of Adobe Reader.  Somewhere in the process, it was suggested
that I delete previous versions of Adobe Reader prior to installing the
new version, so that's what I did.  Now when I try to download and
install the version 9 of Adobe Reader, I get the message that , "The

What is your operating system & version?
What exactly means "will not work"?
If you are on Windows, try removing the corrupted Reader with http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
then reinstall the latest Reader version from http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/

I have been unable to use the Adobe reader for sometime but I now really need it. I have tried updating, reloading, removing to reinstall but at every move I continually get the message above and I cannot get around it no matter what I try. I cannot even remove the program from the list as this same message keeps popping up and I cannot proceed. I need help!!! The original package that came with the computer was version 7 current is 11 but it has never worked and I am unable to continue the install due to the above message also cannot delete, I have deleted all adobe keys in the registry even that does not help....

  • Adobe Reader 9 will not install reporting installatiom package could not be opened

I have WIN XP PRO with SP3. This is a new machine and is running beautifully except Adobe Reader 8 or 9 will not install.
At about 94% done the Adobe Download manager stops and shows the following Windows Installer message
The installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer Package.
Of course when I click OK. I get the message from the downloader that "Installation operation completed successfully". Which of course is not true.
Can any one explain what is happening, and how I should address?

Thanks for the help. Your solution to unregister and register msiexec did not resolve the problem, but it got me thinking and I continued looking down this line of thought through the Microsoft KB articles. There I found a comment per security rights authorization. I had been using an account with administrator rights, but I tried again using the actual administrator account. This worked fine. Adobe 9 is installed and running.

  • Why am I getting the error the installation package could not be opened when trying to install on Windows 7 64 bit

I reciece the follwing message when trying to install
"The Installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists, or contact the application vendor to verify that this a valid windows installer package"

    Hey there Frank0619,
If you have not been able to install iTunes because the Windows Installer service is not available, I would recommend the troubleshooting in the following troubleshooting to help.
    Issues installing iTunes for Windows
    These in particular:
Make sure you have an administrator account.
To install iTunes, you'll need to log in to your computer with an administrator password. If you're not sure if you have an administrator account, read Windows 7: How do I log on as an administrator? You could also refer to your computer's help system, contact your IT department, or visit support.microsoft.com for assistance.
Install the latest Microsoft Windows updates.
To download the latest updates, visit the Microsoft Windows Update website. iTunes for Windows requires Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 with the latest Service Pack installed. If you can’t install the updates, refer to your computer's help system, contact your IT department, or visit support.microsoft.com for assistance.
Download the latest version of iTunes.
The latest version of iTunes can be downloaded at http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.
    Disable conflicting software.
Some Windows background processes can cause issues for other programs and processes. These conflicts can prevent applications, such as iTunes, from installing. Disable conflicting processes by starting your computer using MSConfig:
Using Msconfig to troubleshoot conflicts in Windows XP
Using Msconfig to troubleshoot conflicts in Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8
Some security software made by other companies can't be disabled using MSConfig. If you've installed security software and you're having issues installing iTunes or QuickTime for Windows, you might need to disable or uninstall security software to resolve installation issues.
    Restart your computer.
    Install iTunes.

  • TS3212 Installation package could not be opened. error message. Windows 7 64 bit

iTunes failed to run after using it successfully for over a year on this laptop running Windows 7 64 bit. Numerous attempts to download after uninstalling iTunes results in the error message below. Unable to install Safari as well, same error message.
    Receiving the following message:
"This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you have access to it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer Package."

Nope, that's not it. I've got the same issue, or close to it. The update downloads, a message box opens stating that the file has an invalid signature, and the installer file is deleted. 10.6.3 has attempted to update numerous times, all with the same result. Update is up-to-date, downloading the file always produces the same result and every so often iTunes update comes up to repeat this process. With the volume of posts regarding this issue, why is it that the assumption is always to 'reinstall (repair) the software.' Why doesn't anyone take a look at whether something's broken with the upgrade? Too much trouble? You should try attempting to repair installs once a week or so, now _that's_ a hassle.

whem installing itunes on my mums new computer which is windows 7 i get this message everytime "this installation package could not be opened. Verifiy that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package"

    Let's check your Windows system.
    1.  Have you done all the important windows updates and service Packs on your system.  If not do it now.  START button, type in Windows Update and ENTER.  Select 'CHECK FOR UPDATES'
    2.  Let's check your Windows system files for possible file corruption
SCAN and repair possible Windows system file corruption:
Go to command prompt (START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES right mouse click "command prompt" and choose "Run as Administrator"
    type in
    sfc /scannow
let Windows fix any system files that need to be repaired.
Restart the computer if it did actually repair any files.
    3.  Check your system for possible Malware.  But you have to do it in WIndows Safe Mode.
Start your computer in "Safe mode with networking", go to this link download a free version of Malwarebyte.
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
Install and perform update immediately, then do a full SCAN. Remove malware if it indeed finds any. Restart computer to regular windows to let Malwarebyte complete the removal.
To start your computer in safe mode
Press and hold the F8 key as your computer starts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you'll need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.
On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight the "safe mode with networking" option, and then press Enter. Log on to your computer with a user account that has administrator rights.
When your computer is in safe mode, you'll see the words Safe Mode in the corners of your screen. To exit safe mode, restart your computer and let Windows start normally.
