Uninstall / Reinstall iPod Software

After connecting my iPod to my computer it is possible, within the "Summary" tab, to "Check for Update" of iPod software. My iPod is up to date. However, I have developed a malfunction and I wish to uninstall and reinstall the software. How can I do this?

See: How to restore the iPod to factory settings.
That will load a completely fresh version of the software on your iPod. Then you can reload the songs again from your library.

I cannot get itunes 7 to install. Everytime, I get:
This installation cannot directly upgrade the version of ipod software found on this computer. Please unistall the ipod software and try again.
I have, to the best of my knowledge, removed every bit of ipod software, files, folders on my computer. I uninstalled itunes and tried to download and got the same error.
I then reinstalled the ipod software I had from '05 and itunes 4.9 automatically installed. Finally, in re-uninstalled EVERYTHING and tried again and got the same error message.

it's plausible that there is still skunky ipod software installation configuration information on the PC.
download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. use it to remove the installation configuration of any entries (in the Windows CleanUp list) called "ipod for windows [date]" or "ipod updater [date]".

  • ITunes; uninstalling/reinstalling; iPod...a lot of problems...

A few months ago, my computer suffered a hiccup and went to the recovery console. During this time, all major programs on my computer, including iTunes, were deleted from the hard drive. Everything had to be installed. I didn't bother trying to deal with the iTunes problem until a day ago when I finally got it in what looked like running order.
When I connected my iPod (3rd gen. nano) it didn't show up in iTunes. (Also, my iTunes icon was a green music note and I'm pretty sure iTunes has a blue music note, don't know if that's significant, but it can't hurt). It also had some issues ejecting the iPod (i.e. it wouldn't let me from the "safely remove hardware" icon in the system tray) and I had to eject from My Docs. I tried resetting the iPod using the menu & center button but did not put it into disk mode. When today I tried to uninstall iTunes & Quicktime and reinstall a new version, it looked like it had uninstalled and was installing fine, but it got to a certain point and it said "stopping processes" and it froze. At this point, an error message popped up:
"Error 1921. Service iPod Service (iPodService) could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficent privileges to stop system services"
At that point, I came to the forum for help.
I read a few things that said I should stop iPodService.exe from the task manager as well as "AppleMobileDevice" but I didn't want to do that unless absolutly necessary.
I'm hoping that since I created an account (I had been using my sister's before the computer went into recovery mode) that will solve the problem.
Also, the green-music-note-version of iTunes doesn't seem to have an uninstall feature so I'm not sure how I'm supposed to go about a full uninstall.
I hope I've given enough information and someone can give me a helping hand.
If there is any other information that someone needs to help diagnose the problem, I'm more than happy to provide it.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can transfer all the tunes from my iPOD shuffle to my newly installed hard drive? I loaded the software to the new hard drive but I can't transfer the tunes from the shuffle to the new library.....

    Hi,
If you don't have copy of the songs then you may use the software anapod to copy the songs from the iPod to the computer.

  • How can I get rid of a frozen updates window? I tried uninstalling/reinstalling latest software/rebooting. Window shows up whenever I try to open Firefox and will not close.

When I try to open Firefox I get an updates window for Cool Iris and Cool Previews. Options for 'skip', 'install,' 'more info,' 'x' to close window, nothing responds. I have to use the Mac 'Force Quit' command to close Firefox and get it off my screen. Can't minimize it either.

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode? <br />

  • Unable to uninstall iPod software

When I try to install iTunes 7 I get a message stating "The installation cannot directly upgrade the version of iPod software found on this computer. Please uninstall the iPod software and try again."
For some reason my computer will not allow me to uninstall all of my iPod software. I've even tried going to the Task Manager and end the ipodService.exe process and I still can't uninstall the iPod software.
I, therefore, can't install the new iTunes and get my music that I've purchased. I've completely uninstalled my older version of iTunes.
    Can anyone help?

Go here, roll down to "Clean up iTunes installer files on the computer" and instead of removing itunes remove ipod updater from the list http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976

  • Delete iPod software?

While installing iTunes 7.02 from 7.0, I get the error message 'This installation cannot directly upgrade the version of iPod software found on this computer. Please uninstall the iPod software and try again'. The software is no longer there, but shows up on my Control Panel 'Add/Remove programs' menu. It remains there even after I try to delete it. I even uninstalled my version of iTunes and this did nothing. When I went to reinstall iTunes, The most recent version I was able to install was 6.00.18.
I have had my iPod 5G for quite awhile, and previous updates have never been a problem.
I would really appreciate any help. Thank you.

  • IPod Software Updater won't recognize my iPod

    Hey guys,
I just got a new white 30GB ipod with video. I plugged it in and iTunes said that I had outdated software and I had to download it. So, I downloaded the latest updater, and then I installed it. I plugged my iPod iin again, and my iTunes 6 (latest latest version) again told me to install the software, so I opened the software updater, and it couldn't recognize my ipod!
I can't copy a lot of songs to my iPod because it says that it is outdated, but I can't update it because the updater won't recognize that I have an iPod plugged in even though my Finder and iTunes do recognize it.
Is there something I can do? Please help me!
    Plz help!
    Thanks in advance!
    Matt.

Well, I just got off the phone with an Apple tech and you won't believe the load of c**p I am going to have to do because of the message "some songs won't transfer because your ipod software is too old."
Now, keep in mind, I have a brand new 30GB iPod video and it has the very latest software on it. I also have the latest version of Quicktime and iTunes and Tiger.
This is verbatim what the tech said:
You have to uninstall your ipod software, the iTunes software, and the Quicktime software, then reinstall all of it in a specific order to make the new iPod work.
Is that a load of crap or what?! Since when do they make people reinstall their applications simply because they have a bug in the product?!
So, if any of you are having trouble with the "old software" message, beware of what the tech may end up telling you to do.
I'm very ****** and ticked off at Apple for releasing a product that has obvious problems, given what I've seen on this board, and instead of releasing a software fix, they expect the end-user to fix their problem. That's BS!!!!

  • New itunes/ipod software blocks Internet Explorer (IE)

I have new ipod (30 GB) for Xmas, which comes with new software and recommends installing it, even if you have it already for better performance..., but it blocks connection to Internet among many other problems caused to many other users.
Is any way to fix it or have to wait until new software is fix?
Between all many bigger problems I read I did not see this.
Check settings deeply by myself first and then with IP: PC not shows any signs of changes on settings, modem works properly and my other computer was able to connect to Internet. We conclude it was no problem of connection with IP system or hardware, was with any new software update or program installed yesterday as itunes, real player or windows media player.
Then uninstall ipod software and after restart was able to reconnect to Internet.
Reinstall ipod software to see if now all works properly but not, same problem again, so I have to uninstall again new ipod/ itunes software, just hope Apple fix it or be able to use old software with new ipod.
Before have a shuffle only .
Does old itunes software should work in the same way for both, right?
Because I am not using new again until is fix.
Reading all problems everybody else has I am very lucky, not lost previous songs and was able to install and download songs to ipod from itunes, real player and windows media player. I did not try quick time yet.
    Thank you for any help.

I'm assuming you haven't gotten any help with this problem?
So perhaps I can revive a little activity here ... I have the same problem, but with a twist:
    1) From behind my corporate firewall, I can do all sorts of "iTunes things" such as access the iTMS and download purchases. And, of course, I can access all sorts of other services on the internet via the firewall just fine (so obviously my proxy settings are correct).
    2) From behind the firewall, if I connect either my 5th gen iPod or 3rd gen Nano and the iPod firmware is out of date, I'll get the message saying there's a newer version of the s/w ... and if I click "Update" I'll then get a dialog saying "iTunes could not contact the iPod software update server because you are not connected to the Internet. Make sure your Internet connection is active and try again."
    3) From outside of the firewall (with proxies turned off), the update works just fine.
This seems to point to iTunes (7.6.1) as having a problem with negotiating a firewall for the download service only.
Hoping someone from Apple is listening and replies with some clues to fixing this ...

Problem Upgrading iPod Software when Installing iTunes 7

  • Installation cannot directly upgrade the version of iPod software found

As best I can tell this question was asked but not answered:
Msg. installing iTunes 7.X reads: "The installation cannot directly upgrade the version of iPod software found on this computer. Please uninstall the iPod software and try again." All references to iPod, iTunes, QuickTime removed from Add/Remove, C:Program Files and recycle bin. Got rid of same with Window Cleanup Installer utility whe add/remove did not work.
So,nothing to uninstall? Can't buy a new iPod since can't load iTunes 7.x and Apple loses sale (and me music)
Can load iTunes 6.X fine without a problem.
    Thank you.

    Okay.
Let's try getting an iTunes 7 installer log to the Apple Engineers for a look.
    1. Open a command prompt window. (Start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return.)
    2. Drag and drop iTunesSetup.exe onto the window so that the full pathname of the file is at the command line prompt.
    3. Type in a space, then the following line:
    /l*v C:\log.txt
    4. Hit return.
    5. The installer will create a log file:
    C:\log.txt
Find that file and send it as an attachment to this email address.
in the email to Roy, be sure to include the following information:
    - A link to the thread on Apple Discussions where the issue is being discussed
    - The username you are using in the thread
    - The version of iTunes you are using or trying to use
    - the version of Windows you are using (mention service packs)
    - A concise description of the issue you are seeing
    - The exact text of the error message you are seeing

go into your Add/Remove programs, and uninstall every entry you find in there called "ipod for windows [date]" or "ipod updater [date]".
if Add/Remove won't let you remove one of those, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. use it to remove the installation configuration of any entries called "ipod for windows [date]" or "ipod updater [date]".

  • Windows error after uninstalling ipod software

Hope someone can help. I recently un-installed ipod software due to problems on computer. Anyway since I uninstalled the software I no longer have acces to my CD or DVD drives they show an error message of code 41 that states the device driver was loaded but no physical device is present.
I know the physical device is there. Was wondering if anyone may be able to help, i am running winxp home. I checked micro web site they say remove upper and lower limits in registry. but not specific to IPOD. Seems odd i would uninstall ipod software and my dvd or cd no longer exist? was gonna try re-installing software and see if it helps but was hoping for an experts opinion first.

uninstall the drivers for the CD and DVD drives in control panel and system and let Windows refind them. Also you could reinstall Itunes and Ipod and just let them be.
