Uninstall SMC update? Kernel Panics galore

Kernel Panics like there's no 2moro
Apparently, I updated to the "MacBook SMC(1.41f2)" instead of "MacBookPro SMC(1.33f8 SMC 1.2)". This was quite some time ago. After recently upgrading to Mountan Lion, have been experiencing more and more kernel panics. Did have some on SL, but, just about every day on ML. Only when using Merlin CC208 3G/4G ExpressSlot Air Card(Sprint), never when using wifi. Not a computer wiz, so the debugging articles make me dizzy/queasy. Looking for some input before spending $$ at the Apple Genius. Any and all is appreciated!

  • Kernel Panics Galore

    Hey Gang,
Just getting kernel panics galore (in fact, this is my second time writing this, because, guess what, kernel panic). And there doesn't seem to be any 'one' thing. I'm not very good at reading them, but here's the most recent:

Most of them seem to be about the AirPort card. So I try shutting that off. Seems to work. Then it happens again and it blames the 'USB hub' (and since I have nothing plugged in, I can only assume that means internal). But it juts seems to change from point to point.
For example: it happens sometimes when I plug in, or if I adjust the screen's viewing angle, or if it's just sitting there. Sometimes it's after hours of use, but more often, when it happens a bunch in a row - it gives me about 1 minute of use (sometimes enough to shut the airport card off, othertimes, not even enough to click). Sometimes if I move it (sudden motion sensor?) even.
Today I had some new ones: I tried safe mode, but my timing was off; because my timing was off, it just took me to the login screen. When I tried to login: panic. Restart. Then it panicked during the gray screen apple spinner. Another retry and I hit shift during the startup chime; as soon as I did, the chime turned into static (and really loud too, so much I jumped).
About 50% of the time, I'll get the four beeps and the fans kick into high gear after I start after a panic. Of these, about 50% resolve after a shutdown; the other 50% require a PMU reset, otherwise it'll just keep on going on forever...
Another weird occurence: sometimes, after a restart postpanic, the mouse or keyboard is unresponsive (but the power button works - similiar to people who are having problems with the safe sleep function).
I used to be an Apple Consultant, and my instincts say - 'When bizarre, unexplainable, and 'unpinnable' stuff happens, it's generally RAM.' Which is also what I would think from the four beeps. But I've checked it out with both the Apple Hardware Test (found on my Install DVD) and TechTool Pro 4. While I don't trust TechTool (sorry, Micromat, but it's lied to me before), I've found the AHT to be great.
So, I'm stumped. I've gone through the Knowledgebase articles on both Memory and Kernel Panics (and PMU's for that matter), and I just don't seem to be getting anywhere.
If this is the wrong forum, I apologize.
Thanks in Advance for Any Help,
    Ty
    PowerBook 17" (Final Revision)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2GB

Sounds to me like a logic board issue, which is a shame because if it was just the AirPort causing these it's an easy fix. It's definitely hardware, that's for sure.
In my opinion, it's time to send it to Apple or an ASP.

  • MBP crash during 10.4.11 update, KERNEL PANIC, WON'T BOOT, HELP.

Attempted update to 10.4.11 via Software Update. Machine crashed (screen went black, nothing made the machine responsive). Forced power down, powered back up, "need to restart computer". Great.
Disk Warrior rebuild, permissions repair, restart, KERNEL PANIC. Boot from OSX install disc and am greeted with "unable to install software on this computer" giving two options to restart or select startup disk. No matter, ran disk utility, repaired disk, repaired permissions, restart via Macintosh HD, KERNEL PANIC!!!!!!!!!!! UGH.
Now what?? I can use target disk mode to backup contents of computer to another but I really don't want to go to the extent of reinstalling OSX and reloading my data to the machine from the backup. Any ideas? Need to figure this out before tomorrow, any help is appreciated.

Assuming this doesn't resolve the issue, what's the procedure for reinstalling OSX AND keeping my data intact? Can backup everything using target disk mode, just don't know how to re-load it once reinstalled.
Or even if there's a way to reinstall OSX without having to backup the data and re-load it. Thanks

    thanks in advance

You upgraded from 2.6.17 to 2.6.19 by any chance?
When you update the Archlinux kernel to 2.6.18, make sure
that you changed the initrd setting in your bootloader
(/boot/grub/menu.lst or /etc/lilo.conf). The filename is
                       kernel26.img instead of initrd26.img for kernel26 and
                       kernel26beyond.img for kernel26beyond. For troubleshooting
                       and advanced setup, see

  • 10.6.4 Combo Update - Kernel Panic on 1st Gen Mac Pro with 8GB and ATI 4870

    Hi,
I installed the 10.6.4 combo update last night and now my system constantly kernel panics. It was fine with 10.6.3 for months and never kernel panicked.
    I have 4 x 2GB FB-Dimms and a ATI 4870 card.
The system is also only showing one display and I can force it to kernel panic by going to system preferences and selecting 'Detect Displays'.
Anyone got any suggestions before I reinstall back to 10.6.3?
    Thanks
    Paul

Hey guys. I have got a new Macbook Pro 13" model and I am getting kernel panics. I've been trying to partition the drive for Boot Camp and after I updated yesterday (to 10.6.4) i've been getting the kernel panic sign. Also, when I boot from my Snow Leopard disk to go into Disk Utility to repair the permissions (I opened Onyx and on the SMART check it said the permissions needed to be reset) I get a kernel panic and it crashes! So at the moment i've just backed up my work and I am panicking myself as I have no idea what to do from here.
    Any help would be appreciated!

Just by enabling the airport express card, the above error fills up my panic.log. Now I wonder what triggers the bug? Because I rebooted several times after the update. One thing I did see was the signal strength going less strong in the past days. Since today I cannot use it at all.

    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x000A8800): Uncorrectable machine check: pc = 000000003931288C
That is an uncorrectablehardwarecheck type panic and the Program Counter (address: 000000003931288C) on CPU matchs with the closest value "com.apple.iokit.AppleAirPort2(405.1)@0x392f4000" followed by a typical events in relation with an AirPort card logical failure:
    AsyncSrc = 0000000000000000, CoreFIR = 0000000000000000
    L2FIR = 0000000000000000, BusFir = 0000000000000000
There is a problem on async program in the computer and the connecting network node with Mach port (=socket)-- not synchronized by a common timing signal. An exception problem also occurs on the core/L2 cache and bus Fault Isolation Register (FIR) on the CPU.
More importantly, you will please see CVE-2006-6292 (under review) :
    http://www.cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-6292
The Apple should be working with it. So here is my recommendation:
    1. Data backup.
    2. Erase and Install by Zero Out Data for Security Options...
( This is for your risk contorol.)
    3. Install Mac OS X 10.4.x to update to 10.4.8.
    4. Perform the major updates except the AirPort Extream firmware.

  • KERNEL PANICS GALORE-MAC PRO EARLY 08

I bought my Mac Pro 6 weeks ago. For five of those weeks my machine has suffered from multiple kernel panics a day. The first week I had the machine I was not connected to the internet, and did not upgrade leopard or any of the applications installed. And there were no kernel panics. I purchased an ASUS USB wireless adaptor and with a ralink driver I was finally online. I did all of the necessary upgrades to 10.5.2, FCP (5.1.4) and all CS3 updates. It was on this day that my life has been somewhat of a living ****. It's even hard for me to write this without turning it into a novelette.
After numerous calls to Apple, a visit to an authorized service provider I have no answers, only choices, or rather poisons. I ran the Apple Hardware test where nothing turned up. I have completed 2 clean installs of Leopard. I have removed the ASUS USB wireless adaptor and ralink driver. The problem persists. If its not the USBWA, then Bridge crashes, or is the cause of a kernel panic.
I have to say that since my last clean install, I haven't upgraded anything but FCP. I'm running 10.5.1 and CS3 as is. I am beyond myself with this issue. It is slowly destroying my professional reputation.
Can anybody attest to these experiences or have any possible solutions.
    Thank you kindly.

Have you swapped out Apple RAM for something else? that would be my first 'medicine' in your case.
Second would be that you are on a dedicated circuit and behind a 1500VA UPS just to keep gremlins at bay. Or cosmic rays.
2GB is barely enough for anything, let alone the type of work you do. 4-8GB (if you get it stable).
Personally, I wish there was an option and not forced into Leopard until I want to, and it has had more than 6 months even.
Trade it back for a refurbished Mac Pro, they do have 2008 models and I actually trust those more than new.
Guess you only got to the forums when you could get online, but there have been lots of problem threads in the last two months. This is the 'weakest' Mac tower in 20 yrs. I would almost have expected this 2 yrs ago, but the initial Mac Pro was as error and problem free as you could ask for.

  • Kernel Panic Galores

Mac G4 MDD, 2 GB RAM, Dual 1.25 MHz Processors, FW 800, OS X 10.5.8
    My tale of woe...
A couple of weeks ago, my Mac started throwing kernel panics all over the place at random. One in particular was while attempting to burn a DVD with Toast Titanium 9, it would crash just as the disc started to burn.
I'd heard that USB 2 cards were suspect in many of these cases. So I removed it, to no avail. Then, I began the troubleshooting process. I performed a clean system install. I checked all my drives with Disc Utility and Disk Warrior. I checked the RAM and the PRAM battery. The crashes declined in frequency, but still exist. in particular, when I turn on my MOTU 828 Firewire Audio interface, it crashes immediately, So I deleted all MOTU software, including Digital Performer, and reinstalled the MOTU drivers. No change. Then, I booted in safe mode, and the problem disappeared. Additionally, rather than crashing in Toast Titanium, just before the disc burns, I get a "connection not stable" message, which renders the same effect.
I'm not so much concerned about exactly what the problem is as I am about whether it's with software or hardware. If it's hardware, I'll just get another computer, however, I don't want to do that if it's something in the software that can be corrected.
What's a mother to do? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
In addition, when I used the Find command to locate MOTU software, nothing would show up that was in any of the Library folders. I had to find those files by hand. Am I doing something wrong?

Can you post some of your crash logs? Might be a clue. See Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2546
Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • 10.6.2 Update kernel panics iMac

    HELP!
A mate of mine upgraded his iMac to 10.6.2 on Friday and now it won't boot up. It gets as far as showing the apple logo but then shows a load of text detailing the error:
    something along the lines of:
"Version mis-match between Kernel and CPU PM" then a bit further down it says "Mac OS Version: Not yet set".
We've tried everything to get it back up and running again without reinstalling it. We've tried zapping PRAM (has no effect), running AHT (passed all test with no errors), repair disk (completes with no errors), repair permissions (no errors), running into single user mode (which fails), booting into Safe Mode (which fails), booting from install DVD (works and can reinstall from here - but we don't want to do that just yet).
Has anyone else had this problem? If so, what can I do to fix it?
    Regards,
    Dan

This may not help, but if that computer has a FireWire port and you have access to a second Mac that also has a FireWire port, I'd download the 10.6.2 "combo" updater to the working Mac, put the sick Mac into "target disk mode" (by holding down the "T" key while it is booting), connect the two Macs with a FireWire cable, and apply the updater to the sick Mac.

I have tried creating a clean account, but the same thing keeps happening. I have also noticed that Spotlight re-indexes almost every time I have to restart.
Thanks in advance for the help! (BTW, I am posting this from another computer...)

    Okay, here is the latest.
I ran both the Apple Hardware Test and Rember to check the system. Both checked out fine.
I used Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable backup. It had no trouble making the backup, but it wouldn't boot the machine.
I then used the Leopard Retail disc (10.5.1) and Disk Utility to erase my HD. I used the Zero-out method.
As I am sitting here right now, the "You need to restart" screen just came up. This is after starting up with the DVD and erasing the HD.
    Any ideas or suggestions?
    Thanks!!

  • SMC 1.8 Update - causing kernel panic

Having run software update today on my mid 2012 macbook pro, that included the 1.8 SMC firmware update I have now had 4 kernel panics in as many hours.
Each of the 4 crash logs lists "BSD process name corresponding to current thread: backupd". Since switching off time machine (backs uo to a USB hard disk connected to the WiFi network - seen as time capsule) I have had no further panics.

  • Multiple kernel panics after updating to Drobo Dashboard 2.6.3

Hi, I had a Drobo 5D running fine on my system for several months, using Drobo Dashboard 2.6.2. A couple of days ago, I unfortunately decided to update to the latest version, 2.6.3, and immediately started getting random kernel panics. I tried several things, including back-reving to 2.6.2, but it didn't fix the problem.
Drobo wants to charge me $170 to help with the issue, so I'd like to confirm it's a problem with their software first. Drobo Dashboard installs a kernel extension to support iSCSI over Thunderbolt, and I see that specifically called out in the backtrace on some of the panics.
I pasted in the info from my last 2 panics below. If anyone can help root cause this, I'd really appreciate it!
Most recent panic from this morning:

Uninstall the Drobo software and disconnect the device. See whether the panics stop.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • After update Mac Pro boots to grey screen with Kernel Panic. Help please.

It would be great if someone can help me out. Yesterday I did a software update of iTunes and osx (it said to ease update to Lion) and now my Mac Pro tower (MacPro3,1) boots to a grey screen, kernel panic, telling me that I need to power down and restart my machine. I can boot into osx via the safe mode but unfortunately I don't have an install disk to repair the system disk. What are my options?
The machine appears to work in safe mode. I have tried resetting the PRAM. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
In safe mode, I get this error report.

and here is my system software overview once I have booted into osx in safe mode.
    System Software Overview:
      System Version: Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)
      Kernel Version: Darwin 10.8.0
      Boot Volume: System
      Boot Mode: Safe
      Computer Name: qdise’s MacPro3,1
      User Name: q2dise (dty61)
      Secure Virtual Memory: Not Enabled
      64-bit Kernel and Extensions: No
      Time since boot: 16 minutes

There's no point in reinstalling the same driver. It hasn't changed. It's incompatible with the OS update. Contact the device manufacturer to see if there's a driver update. In the meantime, you should physically remove the device so the driver doesn't load. If you uninstall the driver and leave the device installed, that might also cause a panic.

  • Kernel panic after 10.5.6 update

    Hi all,
A few hours after updating to Mac OS X 10.5.6 yesterday, I got a kernel panic (trace below). If I recall correctly, only Mail and Safari were open at the time.
This is my 2nd kernel panic in the one month since own a new Macbook. What worries me is that the report links the panic to the CPU Powermanagement driver. Is there any way to check this or other likely causes?
    Thanks in advance, regards,
    Toon

  • Are my kernel panics due to the Java Updater (com.oracle.java.Java-Updater) ?

In the past few months I've been getting more kernel panics than usual. This is on my late 2012 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 Mac Mini, running OS X Yosemite (OS X 10.2.2) with 16 GB of RAM.
Looking at the console logs following the last panic, I can see that immediately before the crash, com.oracle.java.Java-Updater had been spamming my log. Here's a sample:
3/20/15 11:58:45.317 PM com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.oracle.java.Java-Updater[77795]) Could not find and/or execute program specified by service: 2: No such file or directory: /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Resources/Java Updater.app/Contents/MacOS/Java Updater

From what it looks like, com.oracle.java.Java-Updater had sent around 77,000 message like this before crapping out.
I'm out of ideas — both regarding whether Java is actually responsible, and if so what to do. I need Java for a few programs I run, so deleting it isn't an option, unfortunately.
