Uninstall x11

made the BIG mistake of downloading XQuartz-2.7.5 (x11) when I was prompted to do so in order to download some fonts. Now my browser is screwed up, I just want to uninstall the thing, but apparently moving the application to trash doesn't do the trick. How can I get rid of it?! I downloaded it from this page: http://xquartz.macosforge.org/landing/
I'm running OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
thanks in advance.

thanks for the quick response. I emptied my trash and reset my default homepage to google -- realized my initial browser confusion was because it had defaulted to Bing instead. I made sure that my preferences had my default search engine set as google, but when I did a search on google, I was directed to Bing again. It looks like it flashed through this url: http://search.installmac.com/results.html?c=8&v=insMac&q=creative+canopy before it went from my google page to the Bing search results page. So... it seems like there's something still lurking in my applications/system that I need to get rid of.
When I searched for xQuartz in my applications folder, these files came up. but since they didn't necessarily have XQuartz in the file name, I wasn't positive they were related and hesitated to trash them. Should I?

  • Non-unix type who wants to uninstalling x11/OpenOffice - Panther

    Please help! I've decided unix is beyond me and want to uninstall x11/OpenOffice from my G3 ibook (Panther). I can't understand and follow the instructions that are in the forum.
    Any simple directions for my 40 watt brain will be very appreciated!

    Hi,
    To uninstall OpenOffice, the simplest way should be just dragging the Openoffice folder in the Applications folder to the trashcan and deleteing it.
    X11 is hurtless to leave on the system. OSX is a Unix system itself, no matter if you have X11 or not. Leaving it might save you trouble from trying out other apps that might need it in the future.

  • How to uninstall X11

    I tried GIMP and decided I don't want to use it. I've searched these forums, the Apple site, the install disk and I can't find out...
    How do I uninstall X11?

    AFAIK, just drag the X-11 app out of /Applications/Utilities, into the trash, and empty it. If you want to see everything that was installed, run the Archive.bom file inside the /Library/Receipts/X11User.pkg via the Terminal.app using the lsbom command:
    lsbom /Library/Receipts/X11User.pkg/Contents/Archive.bom
    Then, you can delete all of those pieces.

  • X11 Wont Open

    X11 was opening and it was taking too long to open so I manually forced it to quit. Ever since, it has not been able to open. From the Applications/Utilities folder I double-click on the X11 app and it starts to open, then crashes.
    I looked in the error console (Applications/Utilities/Console) and it reported:

    I tried uninstalling X11 (drag into trash and empty) and then reinstalling it from the Tiger DVD but still the same symptom.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Have you checked out [http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/xquartz>? There are unofficial updates to X11/Xquartz available there that may help. Also, deleting X11 in Utilities won't fully remove it, you also need to remove the hidden folder /usr/X11, though this really shouldn't be done except perhaps as a last resort before reinstalling the OS. Also, try to remove any X11 plist files in ~/Library/Preferences. I would try this first, then try the updates available at macosforge, and see if this fixes the problem. And perhaps the 10.5.2 update would help as well, though I guess you are still running 10.4, so that's not an option.

  • X11 Issues

    I had to do an archive and install this weekend ... afterwards X11 would not launch so I was unable to run my astronomy program Xephem or Open Office.
    I reinstalled X11 from the Optional Install on the Install DVD and then the X11 2006 Update. Now when I launch X11 I get a full grayish screen (no menu bar or dock) with the X windows on the upper left of the screen and am still unable to run any X windows programs. I cannot accesss the menu bar nor the dock ... the only way I can get out of the screen is to do a Command Q.
    I tried to reinstall Xephem from the CD and from the Terminal ... still not able to run the program. Reinstalled X11 again ... still to no avail.
    Any suggestions ... anyone know how to TOTALLY uninstall X11?

    If getting rid of that file doesn't fix your problem, and you want to go back to the working X11, do the following:
    sudo rm -R /usr/X11R6
    sudo rm -R /etc/X11
    sudo rm -R /Library/Receipts/X11*
    sudo rm -R /Applications/Utilities/X11.app
    Then download the old X11 here.

  • Reinstall X11 on Snow Leopard

    What is the best way to uninstall X11 from a system that has been upgraded to Snow Leopard?
    Then I'm going to reinstall X11 from the Snow Leopard disc.
    I'm motivated to do this because I'm seeing some flaky stuff from a unix application and I suspect that X11 may be the cause.

    Bill Scott wrote:
    One problem I ran into is that a newer version of X11.app was released that never made it into SL. If you have software compiled against that, reinstalling SL X11 isn't going to fix it for you.
    Good point about recompiling. The problem application is one that I compile, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my previous Leopard X11 was the culprit and compiling against the Snow Leopard X11 will fix things.
    I too noticed that SL X11 is an older version of what what ultimately available on Leopard. Strange.
    I'm keeping my eye on the xquartz wiki for an update for SL.

  • Just switched to Mac, major problems with X11 installation

    hi, i am experiencing major troubles with installing X11, i really hope you gonna you will manage to help me. here is the story:
    - i installed X11 from the Tiger dvd, without chossing a customized installation (i did not know i had to). so i performed a typical/full installation
    - ALL the files were apparently copied/extracted to macintosh hd/developer
    - i cannot find the file to launch the installation of x11
    - i already launched Xcode (i am an bloody iognorant, i guess i should have waited for x11 to be properly installed, right...?)
    what should i do now? is it possible to uninstall X11 e start over again with an "ad hoc" installation?
    please tell me i did not make any big mess on my 24hrs old macbook pro...
    thanks a lot guys
    Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    I don't know what you did, but I am confused by one
    thing you said: "i already launched Xcode ...". Xcode
    has nothing to do with X11. (The letter X is way
    overused.) If what you installed was Xcode or some
    part of Xcode, then perhaps you did not install X11
    at all?
    On the retail Tiger DVD, X11 is installed using an
    installation package named "Optional Installs". I am
    not familiar with the Macbook Pro DVD, which might be
    configured differently.
    i think you got the point..
    now i am going to uninstall xcode and then install x11
    what is the script i have to type in the terminal in order to unsinstall xcode?
    the pdf file in developer's folder says the following:
    QUOTE
    * Uninstalling Xcode Tools *
    To uninstall Xcode Tools on your system, type in a Terminal window:
    $ sudo perl /Developer/Tools/uninstall-devtools.pl
    To uninstall from the CD or disk image that contains Xcode Tools, type in a Terminal window:
    $ sudo perl /Volumes/Xcode\ Tools/Utilities/uninstall-devtools.pl
    NOTE: The uninstaller that ships with previous versions of Xcode Tools or the Developer Tools will not clean everything off of your system properly. You should either use the one on the Xcode Tools 2.2.1 DVD, or you should use
    the one installed when you installed Xcode Tools 2.2.1.
    NOTE: Running the uninstall script from Xcode Tools will uninstall any previous installations of Mac OS X Developer
    Tools or Xcode Tools releases.
    NOTE: After running the uninstall script, you should restart your system before installing the Xcode Tools again.
    UNQUOTE
    so what should i do?
    1 - i should type: $ sudo perl /Developer/Tools/uninstall-devtools.pl
    or
    2 - follow the instructions contained in developer>tools>unsinstall-devtools.pl
    in case no. 2, please guide me, because i have no clue about how to handle such information. its arabic to me...
    i am posting this same question in a new post too, because i really need to solve this problem very fast...
    thank you so so much...

  • I downloaded gimp+x11 and message says can't uninstall -help please

    I downloaded gimp with X11 and want to uninstall it but an icon of a hard drive is in my sidebar under my mac hard drive icon  with  gimp X11 on it   and when I tried to drag it to the trash, a message popped up saying "can't = put it in trash because gimp cannot be uninstalled" . Please help me. I have an older version of adobe creative suite but wanted a simpler paint program to merge art and photos. I desperately want to uninstall gimp because it is not even as good as Tuxpaint which my granddaughter uses at school and which I realized has options of photo merging also and seems like a better designed program even if it is for kids. The only problem with Tuxpaint is enlarging its canvas or workspace window and I haven't yet found how to export it's images but my granddaughter loves it and will flip when she realizes she can load photos from her digital camera, I hope. My main problem though is getting rid of gimp.  Thank you for your help.

    It sounds like you have a disk image mounted. If that's so, unmount it by clicking the eject icon that appears when you mouse over it in the Finder sidebar, then move the image file (something like "Gimp.dmg") to the Trash.

  • Uninstalling and Reinstalling X11

    Earlier today I began to download several programs (well, really they were all required programs of another, but that doesn't matter) via MacPorts. One of them failed to build. I searched around to find out why, and it turns out that my Xfree86 wasn't cutting it, and I needed to install X11.
    Long story short, I installed it, and screwed it up pretty bad. Don't ask how, at this point it doesn't matter. I deleted everything associated with X11 that I didn't have going in (as far as I could tell atleast)...
    Now, I need X11 again, and the pkg file availiable for download insists that I have X11, so it can't install it. I have deleted the following key files and directories using sudo rm -rf.
    /usr/X11R6
    /etc/X11
    /Applications/Utilities/X11.app
    /private/etc/X11 (This was empty for me, just I have been told I have to delete it.
    /usr/bin/open-x11
    /usr/lib/X11
    /Library/Receipts/X11User.pkg
    /Library/Receipts/X11Update2006.pkg
    And possibly more. Doubtful though...
    However, after all of this, it still insists that X11 is on my system.
    I just want a clean Reinstall of it, is there any way I can do that?
    (I don't want xfree86, I doubt you would recommend it, but I'm just saying, it caused the problem in the first place.)

    Well, don't I feel stupid.
    Apparently it's a bug with the online installer.
    If anyone else every gets this problem, just run the one off of the install disk. Unfortunately, because I am lazy, I hadn't tried that, I figured they were the same.

  • Cannot Get X11 Running

    So, I've spent the last few days setting up Arch on my iMac.  I've been using Linux for a few years, but this is the first time I've tried to setup a distro myself.  Anyway, I got things partitioned and dual booting okay, but I'm now stuck trying to get X to work.  I'm not sure if this is a problem with my graphics card, with the drivers, with X11, with my sound, or with my general configuration, but what I *do* know is that I'm a newbie.. so I hope this is the right place to be.
    I've been able to get unstuck thus far because I've had a concrete google-able error to look up... but none of these warnings are particularly illuminating.  I know I'm committing the cardinal sin of not including bunches of relevant files, but I guess that's a Catch-22, since I don't know how to copy-pasta things from that computer as I don't have a WM, so bear with me and I'll try to provide the information ya'll need.
    $ lspci | grep VGA
    01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M98L [Mobility Radeon HD4850]
    I'm using Catalyst -- I tried the open source drivers but I seem to have more luck with Catalyst (I can switch back, not particularly set on either, and I was careful to reboot between uninstalling and installing and remove the old config files).  I'm using the 3.2.5-1 kernel and Catalyst 12. The xorg.conf file indicates to use "fglrx" for the graphics card on "PCI:1:0:0" (all the settings from an aticonfig --init).  I have fglrx in the the rc.conf modules as well, and I'm running the kernel with nomodeset (if I don't, it wont even boot.. not even a little bit).
    So, the problem... I try starting X with startx, and it goes grey, then black, and the shuts down "successfully" without doing anything.  Just running X will hang on a grey screen and I'll have to reboot.  At least startx spits out stuff to the command line:
    $ startx
    (WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0@1:0:1) found
    [- XMM_GLX] [I ]glesxXvInit Configureable RGBOutputColorRange
    xinit: connection to X server lost
    waiting for X server to shut down Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.
    The device at that port is the HDMI Radeon sound -- so I don't know why that's relevant.  I've tried to add a Device section for it but the warning persists.  I haven't changed xinit, and I have installed twm, clock, xterm, etc.  There are no errors in the log file, only warnings, including the warning above:
    $ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep WW
    (WW) Falling back to old probe method for fglrx
    (WW) fglrx(0): board is an unknown third party board, chipset is supported
    Running just X, or various other similar commands lead to the same warnings and observationally equivalent behavior.  This might be needless to say, but the commands to "see if you set this up right" also fail, like
    $ glxinfo | grep direct
    Error: unable to open display
    So... yeah.
    EDIT: Figured out how to command line email myself the files..!
    The output of startx to the terminal:

    Yeah thats... the guide I was reading.
    hadrons123 wrote:Another thread possibly due to not adding required dameons  in /etc/rc.conf.
    And those are?  I installed dbus as that's the only daemon the beginners guide mentions, and I added alsa and a few others to rc.conf for good measure but saw no change and removed them.  So right now I only have:
    $ grep DAEMONS /etc/rc.conf
    # DAEMONS
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network crond dbus)

  • X11 won't start (sets monitor to standby) with nVidia card

    Hello everyone!
    I'm having some trouble getting my computer to work properly. Yesterday it was working perfectly, but today it would't start again. After some troubleshooting I've determined that the problem lies with X11 and the graphics driver. The bootloader, grub, and arch itself, boots perfectly in runlevel 3, but the moment you run "startx" it would appear to be loading for a while and finally the screen goes to standby mode and there is no way out of that other than reseting the computer using the reset button. I've tried uninstalling the nvidia drivers and installing nouveau drivers, but it still won't start X, this time arround, it would just hang up with a white screen.
    I've also tried removing xorg.conf and also using nvidia utility to generate a new one, but neither seems to work.
    /var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't report any errors, it just gives different info from the configuration and the graphics card and just ends there.
    I've tried booting with a debian live USB but it would't boot either (the computer would just restart). I've also tried a Kubuntu live USB, this time arround, it would start to boot but the graphics appeared to be corrupted (strange colored noise all over the screen) and eventually it would just hang up. Using nomodeset Kubuntu finally booted (using vesa I guess?), but the same didn't work in Arch (I'm guessing because I have the nvidia drivers installed instead of nouveau).
    In conclussion, something appears to be wrong with the graphics card, I dont't know if it's a software problem or a hardware problem, as it started from one day to the other, without any upgrades in between, and it just doesn't work in any of the 3 distributions I've tested.
    Any suggestions in what to do to troubleshoot this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Santiago.-

  • Could uninstalling 'nvidia' package break X?

    For some reason or another, I skipped the install of the "nvidia" specific driver. I basically forgot to copy my xorg.conf to /etc/X11, but in the process, I uninstalled the nvidia software and I couldn't boot into X. I believe some of the messages were "can't load vesa" and "can't load fbdev" modules. basically I installed by "pacman -S xorg". It worked untill I uninstalled Nvidia driver (because I installed this first before copying over xorg.conf from /root. At this point I figured maybe it was something where I had to reboot for it to work. At that point, I got a ram fs shell! My question is, is there certain things that can / cannot break X? Thanks for any suggestions.

    ok, here is my xorg.conf:

  • Need X11... mac says it's installed but I can't find it anywhere

    My computer won't let me install X11 from the apple site because it says a newer version is already installed on my computer... except that I can't find said program anywhere. I don't have my discs, they're in florida and I'm in NY. I didn't install things off of the disks because I assumed that everything I'd possibly need would be already installed. What can I do? I can't access the invisble X11 that's already "installed". I know this because I tried to install OpenOffice and it said I needed X11, and told me where to download it.
    So I need a program to install a program, but I already have the needed program, except that it's invisible.

    Yes, a site helping me install OpenOffice was telling me that I hve to go to the library and remove the X11User.pkg file in order to force it to uninstall so I could ACTUALLY install it... but that file is not in the library. I do hve administrator's access, too.

  • Is X11 Part of Leopard?

    I am uninstalling an Open Office version that required use of X11. When I originally installed it, I swear X11 was part of that install. I am removing OO 2.4 and was going to remove X11 as well, but I'm told in the OO forum that X11 is part of Leopard and should be left alone. Is this the case? Did I maybe install over a version of X11 when I originally installed OO???

    I am uninstalling an Open Office version that required use of X11. When I originally installed it, I swear X11 was part of that install. I am removing OO 2.4 and was going to remove X11 as well, but I'm told in the OO forum that X11 is part of Leopard and should be left alone.
    yes, X11 comes with the OS.
    Is this the case? Did I maybe install over a version of X11 when I originally installed OO???
    yes, that's what happened. I would leave X11 alone. there is no harm in removing it but you might need it later.

  • X11 - where is it? ...and how do i get rid of it?

    hello there!
    yesterday something rode me to install openoffice. when i wanted to start it i got the message that apple x11 is needed (ok, i know you knew that)...
    ...so i took my apple cd and installed that x11 thing. but openoffice still did tell me to install x11! the osx help told me that x11 will be in the utilities folder - but it isn't. this encouraged me to install most of that developer tool stuff or however that is called from my apple cd - and yeah, no open office but about 2gb less space on my hdd and no x11. via spotlight i found some x11 package on my hdd which i then tried to install but it stopped during installation with the message that some error occured...
    ok, my questions are:
    how will i get rid of my stupid a$$ installation of that developer stuff?
    ...and how will i install x11?
    thanks a lot in advance guys........

    x11 needs to be installed from the OS X install cd that shipped with your mbp (its burried in one of the folders, don't remember which off hand - sorry).
    as for removing developer tools... personally, i wouldn't. if you ever plan on installing stuff from source via fink or darwinports or want to install apache/php for some reason, you'll need the developer tools. they do come in very hand, but if you are so incline to remove them, open up a terminal window (/Applications/Utilities) and issue the command
    sudo /Developer/Tools/uninstall-devtools.pl
    that should prompt you for your password. Just walk through it and it'll clear them out.
    If you really want to use open office on os x, i'd highly suggest neooffice
