Uninstalled Bootcamp left with Macintosh HD and Free Space
Uninstalled Bootcamp and left with this! Anyone know how to fix without erasing and backing up Thanks!
I agree with the above comment.
Also, I think you can't change a partition that's at the beginning. The steps to rearrange the partition without reinstalling will be time consuming than backing up and reinstalling. But if you want to try it (highly recommend backing up the data first)
format the free space as it's partitioned (partition 1)
clone the data to the new partition (partition 1) created in step 1 (you can use carboncopycloner to clone)
after confirming the data is fully cloned to partition 1, format and merge the remaining partition
I've done it before multiple times with success, but always backup your data if you are unsure.

Accidentally delete iPhoto and now left with blank photos and blank events
Hi,
I have accidentally deleted iPhoto app and now i am left with blank photos and blank events in my iphoto.
I tried eveything. Ranging from removing the pplist, installing, Iphoto Library manager but it seems to get worse.
i have the original package content
and this is how my iphoto library icon looks like.
And when i try to drop my original content package into the new iphoto, it will show an error message.
Kindly tell me what else can i do?
im using iphoto'09Outside chance: try recover the deleted files with an (expensive) app like File Salvage
Other than that, no hope. -
is there any way to update to OS X from a non-aluminum Macbook from 2008 that has the 2 gb of memory and snow leopard installed, with 8 gb of free space?
The Early 2008 MacBook can only go up to Lion...the compatibility requirements for Mountain Lion and Mavericks are the same http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/ which says Late 2008 MacBook.

Trouble with Disk Utility, Erase Free Space
Hello,
I have (had) a 120GB HD w/ about 53GB free. I had trashed some large files and thought I'd try the "Erase free space" option in Disk Utility.
I ran it per the help file: seleced Macintosh HD, Erase Free Space, using the "Zero Out Deleted Files" option. It got started, created a temp file, then told me it would take about 31 minutes. As it neared completion, I was presented w/ a Dialog: Out of Free space - or smthg to that effect.
Per the help file, which said I might be presented w/ such a warning but that I could ignore it, I clicked "OK".
Then the computer chugged along for another hour or so, never finishing. Finally I clicked the "Skip" button, and it chugged along for another 30 min. or so, never making any progress in "skippin" in the status bar. I finally just quit Disk Utility.
Now I'm showing a completely full HD. I've restared, but the same thing. I've tried to run Erase Free Space again, but it gives an error "Could not create temp file" - I'm assuming b/c it needs free space to do the task, and it thinks there is none. So...
...How do I get my free space back?
Thanks in advance...There's probably a huge temp file somewhere, maybe in a folder in your Trash. Do a search for a huge (multi-GB?) file (it might be an image file) that looks suspicious.
The only reason to use erase is for security purposes, and doesn't do anything in the normal course of computer usage. Erase actually writes data to your remaining file space (as you have discovered with no space left) and then trashes that data (or not, in your case).
P.S. In future you should post this kind of topic as a question so people will know it is something that needs answering rather than being a comment.

Is there a way to speed up a Mac (similar to de-fragging on a PC)? Mine has gotten slower and slower over time.
When memory/disc comes close to full would that have an effect on performance? How should I determine what programs/software to remove and free space?Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Start with visits to: OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the View menu. Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file. -

How can validate the ASM size and free space correctly?
Dears ,,
I faced problem in ASM size as it appeared in alert file as below
ORA-19504: failed to create file "+DG_DATA"
ORA-17502: ksfdcre:4 Failed to create file +DG_DATA
ORA-15041: diskgroup space exhausted
So we resize ASM space and large it. But we faced the same problem also although there is free space in ASM.
It seems that the shown free space is not real.

I was having this problem. Im my case i couldn add datafiles to a tablespace despite the fact that i was having a lot of space in the asm. Try rebalancing. It might help. In my case rebalancing also didn work because it seems that there need to be a threshold space in all the disks for the rebalancing to happen which was not in my case, so i had to shrink some unused space in the tablespace and then after gaining the required space I rebalanced the disk and then the disks got rebalanced, also i was able to use the free space that was showing . -

The second half of your original query (below the UNION ALL) is the bit that calculates the space for the temp tablespace. It looks to me as if you have multiple files in your temp tablespace and that the files actually have at least two different sizes. This is from one of my databases the has that situation, and builds up to the query that you are using to get the temporary tablespace information.
The basic dba_temp_files query:
SQL> select tablespace_name, bytes
2 from dba_temp_files;
TABLESPACE_NAME BYTES
TMP 2146500608
TMP 2146500608
TMP 1072758784The basic v$temp_space_header query:

2 FROM v$temp_space_header;
TABLESPACE_NAME BYTES_FREE BYTES_USED
TMP 0 2146500608
TMP 0 1072758784
TMP 0 2146500608Your query against v$temp_space_header
SQL> SELECT tablespace_name,bytes_free,bytes_used
2 FROM v$temp_space_header
3 GROUP BY tablespace_name,bytes_free,bytes_used;
TABLESPACE_NAME BYTES_FREE BYTES_USED
TMP 0 1072758784
TMP 0 2146500608The basic join of your two queries without the aggregation. I added the file_id and bytes columns from dba_temp_files and the bytes_free and bytes_used columns from v$temp_space_header to make what is happening clearer.

Problem with game and free space
I just installed a game, The Sims 2 and everytime I try and play it it says that I need to "free up some space on your local disk and relaunch the Sims 2". However I have 50G free space and sometimes it will load. Does anyone know what I should do?
Hi sarah, welcome to macbook forum,
uninstall your sims2, repair permission and optimize your HD using ONYX or machelpmate.

Startup Pop up with macintosh HD and Recovery 10.9
on the odd occasion for absolutely no reason when I start my macbook pro running the latest mavericks OS version, the first screen that comes up when starting up from power off shows two options to choose either "Macintosh HD" or "Recovery 10.9" with "select network" below them, I dont understand why it keeps coming up every once in a while or what it even does although I'll usually select macintosh hd and everything will be ok but I'd just like to know whats up if anyone had any comments. Thanks in Advance
Hi tandh318,
Welcome to the Support Communities!
The article below may be able to help you with this. Once you choose the Macintosh HD as your startup volume, the pop up option should not re-appear.

Bootcamp setup with Mac OS and WinXP; now what to use Ghost to image
We have successfully taken a Mac and setup bootcamp with Mac OS and Windows XP; however, we have another 50 Mac's to deploy. It was our thought we could use Ghost to image the initial system and deploy to all others. However, in our attempts Ghost is only seeing the Mac side.
Has anyone does this? Is there a way to get it to pick it all up? or do we have to manually install all 50 Mac's?jjoe141 wrote:
I'm hearing with any of these tools we could image the Mac side, then do bootcamp and manually install WinXP OS/software on each system.
If you use SuperDuper and your target drive is larger than your HD, you can use a block clone which will include everything on your internal drive including XP. -
Hi all-
I recently used my ipod to transfer about 14 gigs of files from one computer to another. after the transfer was done, i deleted the files from the ipod (i accessed the ipod from finder to upload and then delete the files). however, when i view my ipod capacity on itunes, it indicates that 14 gigs of space is still being used by "other" stuff. even checking the properties of my ipod on win xp indicates that theres on a few megabytes of space left in my ipod, and i have a 30 gig model with only about 13 gigs of music in it so far. is there any proper way to free up space on my ipod? why is some space being occupied despite deleting my files?
thanks for your input!Did you Empty the trash after you deleted the files?
