Uninstalling Applications - Help!

When uninstalling applications (such as MS Office) , I was told to just drag the application to the trash and it would be deleted. Is this the case or are there residual files that remain such as in Windows XP? Not sure why OS X does not have a remove aoftware applications program...Sorry, I am a recent convert to Macs and I still think in Windows terms sometimes.
Here is why I am asking. My friend's MS Office for Mac somehow became corrupted on his MacBook while he was downloading the Office Update (not sure what he did or what happened) lso I decided to just reload the application from scratch. I dragged the MS Office folder from the Applications folder into the trash assuming that the entire program would be deleted. When I tried to reload MS Office, it would not ask for a license key or anything and did not reload the entire program. It would not work. It took around 3 attempts to get this done and then I rebooted the computer on the final attempt and it worked. I am thinking that remnants of MS Office were still around somewhere and this was conflicting with the new install. Curious as to why it did not prompt me to install the Microsoft key??
If anyone can clarify this MS Office question as well as what other steps must be done to remove an application (other than dragging to trash), thanks in advance
d

Many thanks. I was not aware that there was an uninstall application buried within the MS Office folder. I could not find anything in the software booklet and all my spotlight searches were for "MS Office Uninstall" which did not produce anything.
Actually the name of the program is called "Remove Office" and it is located within the folder named "Additional Tools"
I learn something new everyday!

  • How do I uninstall applications with a MacBook Pro?

Hai, I need help finding out how to uninstall applications with a MacBook Pro?
-I just got this computer 5-6 days ago and I hardly know anything about it. (AS expected from a new user to a Mac computer. ) Everything is kind of confusing to me especially with unziping and ziping files.
-I have researched trying to find out ways to uninstall with a Mac but everyone seems to have a different way to uninstall. And I really don't want to do something to mess up my new computer while trying to find out how to uninstall applications. (These computers are "expensive" and are non-returnable.)
If anyone can answer my question that would be so great and I would surely appreciate you!
    Thank you, CreeSuki.
OH, and if needed I am running on operating system "Lion" (Rawrrrr). And I am trying to uninstall Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 in general.
    Thank you!

The basic way to uninstall an app is just trash it.  But to get (most, sometimes all) of its associated data files, for example, preferences (usually .plist files in ~/Library/Preferences -- ~ is your home directory) you either have to know what to look for or try to use one of the 3rd party generic uninstallers.  Here's a (partial?) list of potential uninstallers:
    Amnesia
    AppCleaner
    AppDelete
    AppZapper
    CleanApp
    iTrash
    TrahsMe
Go to www.macupdate.com and search for them.
Note, there is no guarantee these uninstallers will find all the potential stuff an app can install but even if it misses stuff no harm is done other than wasting a little disk space.
Oh, almost forgot.  Many apps that come with their own installers sometimes provide their own uninstallers to uninstall themselves.  Use those if they are provided instead of one of the generic uninstallers.

  • How do you uninstall applications from OS X?

I've been having problems with a couple of my applications, mainly Firefox (hangs, plus I prefer Safari anyway) and Office X (must be opened from the Applications folder and won't open by double-clicking on an Office document icon). I'd like to uninstall and then reinstall them, but I can't find any info anywhere (checked MS and Firefox sites as well as Apple OS X support site) on how to uninstall. (As you can tell I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to OS X.) Any help/advice would be appreciated!

    Hi Catti,
Some applications have an uninstall option in the installer. You run the installer as if you were going to put the app on the drive and choose Uninstall instead.
For those that don't come with an uninstall program, you simply put the application in the trash. So put Firefox in the trash. Then press Command+F and enter "Firefox" as the search string to find any other pieces it created on the drive. For sure you'll find a .plist file (a preferences file) and maybe a couple of other small folders. Put those in the trash, also. That's it.
Office has its own uninstall application on the CD. Run that to remove all traces of Office. Don't worry about your e-mail database if you're using Entourage. It won't remove that. But make a copy of it to your desktop first just to be safe.

  • Uninstalling Applications

Folks, I am desperate, and I hope a kindly and knowledgeable soul will be able to help me.
I am having problems using iTunes / realPlayer. See
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2129461
I wonder if completely uninstalling both would do the trick. But how does one completely remove all the files associated with an app - they seem to be distributed in so many different places and folders?
Many, many thanks for reading this

    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
For more information visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on removing software.
Do not uninstall iTunes. Rather reinstall it from your OS X Installer Disc's Optional Installs package installer.
And, we cannot really help you with a problem unless you tell us what it is. Uninstalling software may not help, but we have no way of knowing without you posting more specific information about the problem you are having.

  • Uninstalling applications with Remote desktop

    Hi
I am new administering Mac OS X servers and clients and needed a little help.
I have learned how to distribute packages and applications but have yet to discover how to uninstall applications from remote clients.
Is there a tutorial that will show me how this is done?
    Cheers
    Jonathon

There is no method built into ARD (nor in Mac OS X) for uninstalling applications. For simple applications, you can just do a search in ARD for the application and then delete it. But for more complex applications, ones that install multiple components in several places, those may require running a developer-provided uninstaller on each system.
    Regards.

  • Uninstalling Applications/Programs

How do you uninstall an application/program? This might sound like a naive question but I'm new to Mac and don't know the best/most effective way of doing it. In Windows there is the add/remove programs utility, is there something like this for Mac and I'm just not seeing it? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Silently uninstall applications installed with Exceptions Deployment tool

How are we supposed to uninstall applications installed via the Exceptions Deployment tool?
At the time of writing this I can only see listed install as a supported workflow.
It would be a great help if we could have an uninstall workflow too.
Any suggestions on how to work round this also appreciated.

  • Photoshop CS4 in-application help

I am using the trial Photoshop CS4 and cannot get the in-application Help to work. the CS3 Help works just fine.
When I launch Help from the Menu bar I am directed to the Adobe Site.
When I launch the Adobe Help application from the Applications folder, I get the Help window, and when I click on the 'Help for' menu and Choose 'Adobe Photoshop CS4' I get this
"This topic is in the Help system of another product. To view the topic, install that product. file:///Library/Application%20Support/Adobe/Help/en_US/Photoshop/11.0/help.html'

Also, when you've opened that page, you'll see a little (
very little) PDF icon at the top there, which gives you the option of downloading the whole Help site as a 40+MB PDF document to your drive. Useful if you're always connected to the Internet, but it has the downside of not benefiting from updates, additions and corrections.

I Would appreciate if anyone would me in this regard.

Thanks, Jaime Farinos for you reply and that helped me alot..
Now i could successfully get enable the APPLICATION HELP tab in the Help Menu in Integration Repository and Integration Directory.
As you suggested me to implement note 839880 and i did the same
As i gave the url as http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata in com.sap.aii.docu.url and it worked well but which ever object i select in IR/ID only the above url is getting enabled because i gave that url as default.
Now what i need is for example if i select Mapping Obects in Integration Repository or for example Sender Agreement in Integration Directory and when i press Application Help tab in Help Menu, then that correspoinding url of (Mapping Obects  or Sender Agreement ) of help.sap.com page should get opened respectively and so on.
    Hope you got my point.
Please help me in this issue.
    Regards,
    Varun Reddy Kasireddy.
