Uninstalling CS3 after installing CS5 upgrade

Is it necessary to uninstall CS3 after installing a new copy of CS5 upgrade?  For the sake of not eating up storage space?  Or does CS5 depend on files CS3 has already in place?  I'd like to get Bridge CS3 off my computer since Bridge CS5 is now installed. And CS3 is not appearing in the Add/Remove dialog in Control Panel (Win XP Pro)

Please read this and this. In short: Attempting to remove older versions after the fact is ill advised. It's calling for trouble, especailyl with the fragile CS3 installers. Read the articles and obey proper procedures. Otherwise jsut leave the old version in place.

  • Uninstalling CS3 after installing CS5.5?

I have previously installed CS5.5 standard onto my laptop and retained CS3 until I was proficient.  What is the best procedure to now uninstall CS3 and free up some HDD space?  Win7 64 bit OS.  Do I need to deactivate CS3 or will this stop the newer software from running?

    Hi Mylenium,
Thanks for the quick response.  I am a CS novice so your help is appreciated.  Do I need to deactivate both CS3 & CS5.5 before I uninstall?  If so, are there any codes I should write down to allow me to reinstall and reactivate CS5.5?  I have the Upgrade Version of CS5.5 Design Standard.

  • Uninstalling CS3 and Installing CS5.5 (Master Collection)

I purchased CS 5.5 master collection so that I could use the current CS3 master collection on another older machine.  My question is this: What is the best way to uninstall the CS3 master collection on my current machine (Windows 7 - 64bit) so I can then install the new full version CS5.5 master collection? Also, is there anything that I need to be aware of as far as backing up on the old software settings?  Just trying to avoid headaches.

The only thing you would need to worry about is any "presets" that you created yourself. So actions, swatches, brushes, etc. need to be backed up. Its best to uninstall cs3 before installing cs5 and not after as this can cause issues with file associations.
If the second computer that your were planning on putting cs3 on is your only other computer, you should be able to put cs5 on it instead, as the license is suppose to be for 2 systems, but only one can run at a time. To my knowledge this license doesn't take into consideration the version number of the software. So if cs5 if on your new system and a laptop for example, you can not put cs3 onto a third computer since the license is for what I assume to be an upgrade.
If you paid full price then the last paragraph is a moot point.

  • Can't uninstall CS3 after installing CS4

After I got CS4 installed and working ok, I tried to uninstall CS3. A dialog window showed two components that could be uninstalled; CS3 and Shared components. Both were checked and grayed out so that I could not uncheck Shared components. How can I uninstall CS3?

Thanks, I spoke to Adobe and they said that all I had to do was be patient. The uninstall took about 40 minutes, and it was quite a while before the progress bar budged.

  • Problem uninstalling CS4 after installing CS5 - help!

    I installed CS5 without a hitch.
I then tried to uninstall CS4. I opened Photoshop and chose Help/Deactivate, taking care to tick the serial number box too.
After the uninstall procedure, I got an message that it had completed but with errors.
In Control Panel/Programs, CS4 is still listed, but now showing only 3.77Mb instead of the 300Mb+ that it was.
I then downloaded Adobe Support Advisor and ran it. The diagnosis directed me to this Knowledge Base Article.......
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/403/kb403891.html#ionComHeading
    1. Can I get rid of what remains of CS4 in my Control Panel?
    2. Will it affect my system in any way?
    3. Will it affect CS5 in any way?
I've never had a problem uninstalling older versions in the past. Not a happy bunny at all!
    Thanks.
    D.
ps. I couldn't not insert the above link by right clicking and choosing insert link - had to type it by hand. But, the kb number (403891) is definitely correct.

I've never had a problem uninstalling older versions in the past.
...but then you probably obeyed the correct order in the first place. Anyway, there is no harm in leaving the remnants in place. you can of course make them disappear by removing the relevant registry key(s), but how important that little cosmetic surgery is to you, is for you to decide.

  • Uninstalling CS4 after installing CS5

    Hi,
I have just installed the CS5 upgrade (Master Collection). Now I have CS4 and 5 installed, which is unnecessary.
Question 1: Can I uninstall CS4 without deleting any important files like libraries, templates, brushes, actions, etc?
Question 2: What is the best way to uninstall CS4?
    Thanks,
    Rogier

    Hi Roger:
Would be curious to hear what happened with your uninstall. I encountered a similar situation, checked with NAPP due to the many problems I have had with Adobe Support. The uninstall almost worked.
However, when I removed CS4 from my lap top, the CS5 executable programs disappeared from <Start> <All Programs> <Adobe>. I used Explorer to see what files were installed, and they were all there. So I either have to execute them from Explorer, or reinstall to make life a bit easier. So I am in the process of reinstalling. Think I will leave both sets on my Desktop.
Below is the information NAPP sent me. There are some good hints if you have customized Actions.
    From NAPP:
You can uninstall through Start menu> Control Panel> Add and Remove Programs.   But before you do, consider these steps:
    --Open Photoshop CS4.
--In the Actions palette, select a set of custom Actions (a set, not an individual Action).
--From the Actions palette menu select Save Actions.
--Choose a location, assign a name (using the .atn file extension), click Save.
--Repeat for any additional sets of Actions.
--If you have any custom brushes, styles, etc., use Edit> Preset Manager to create and save sets.
    --Quit Photoshop CS4.
    --Open Photoshop CS5.
--From the Actions palette menu choose Load Actions.
--Navigate to and select your .atn files to load them into the palette.
--Use Edit> Preset Manager to load other custom items.
Also check the other programs of the Creative Suite for custom templates and such that you want to save.

Definitely leave CS3 installed until AFTER you install CS4.

  • Is it necessary to uninstall CS3 before installing CS4?

I currently have CS3 Premium (Student Licsense) on my MacBook. I bought CS4 Premium (also a Student License) from my college and am planning on installing that so that I will be up to date with what is in our graphic design computer lab. But I wasn't sure if I needed to uninstall CS3 before installing CS4. My school doesn't sell the upgrade so I had to buy the actual CS4. I'm pretty sure my laptop doesn't have room for both, but I just wanted to get some feedback on all of this so that I can make sure I'm doing everything correctly.
I was also wondering if my CS3 files that are currently saved on my MacBook will be effected in any way when I uninstall CS3 and install CS4?

    No need to uninstall.
In fact its wise to keep the older version until you are familiar with the new version. I have almost all versions of Photoshop going back to 2.5.1 as well as the 4 creative Suites happily installed and working together on my G5.

  • After installing Facebook upgrade, login screen wo...

After my initial mystery problem on accessing Facebook on my new Nokia 6700 Slide (as mentioned elsewhere on this forum), I was eventually able to access it with no problems, had saved my login info, so hitting the Facebook button was all I needed..
However, last night, I was going to do a quick FB check, and hit the button as usual. I found that I was now logged out.
As I started entering my login info, a link popped up, saying that a Facebook upgrade was available.
I thought, I might as well upgrade there and then, to keep my phone applications up to date.
    Mistake
Downloading & installation went fine, I got the notification saying that installation was complete.. But when I hit the FB button to enter my login info, the login screen would not stay on the screen at all! As I hit the button, the login screen appears for maybe less than one second, but there seems to be no way of making it stay on screen, so that I could actually enter my info.
I checked whether there was an alternate way of accessing FB, rather than using the button I have on my quick menu bar.. I found that, after installing the upgrade, I now had a FB link in Menu > Applications > Installations (I know it wasn't there before as the only default installation was G.I.JOE, the game, and I'd since added Backgammon and nothing else). I tried logging in that way, but the same thing happens - login screen won't stay open.
I wonder, is this happening to anyone else, and would anyone have an idea on how to fix it? (Is there a way to uninstall the upgrade that messed things up? Is the upgrade at fault, and is there a new upgrade on the way soonish?)

O...k.... As with the previous FB-related problem, this one seems to have sorted itself with time as well!
Maybe next time, I'll give it a day before posting yet another topic here

  • Remove CS4 after installing CS5

    Hi...
Just bought CS5 Design Premium upgrade (from CS4). While waiting for CS5 to arrive, I downloaded the trial version of CS4. This did NOT overwrite CS4. When I receive CS5, I plan on just putting the serial number in the trial version. That will leave CS4 on my computer.
    2 questions...
    1. Can I delete CS4 (after installing CS5) using add/remove without messing up the CS5 installation?
    2. If I remove the trial version and install CS5 when I receive it, will it automatically remove/overwrite CS4?
    Thanks for your help...

    1. Yes, but there's no good reason to do so.
    2. No, the trial is identical to purchased version. Just enter your serial number and you should be good to go.

  • Do I need to install CS4 full version before installing CS5 upgrade?

New hard drive in iMac. I have a full version of CS4 design premium and an upgrade version of CS5. Do I have to install both? Or can I just install CS5 upgrade and somehow use my CS4 full serial number to validate the CS5?

You have the right idea.  You do not have to install CS4.  At some point during installation of CS5 you will be required to enter the serial number for CS4 in order to confirm it as a valid upgrade installation

  • Uninstalling CS3 after upgrading to CS5.5?

Sorry to throw this query at you all but am unable to find an answer in Adobe support after spending half an hour looking!
I've just upgraded from Web Premium CS3 to Web preium CS5.5 - all good - but the I still have all of the CS3 programmes on my PC. Can I now delete the CS3 suite ok without affecting the CS5.5 progs? I presumed that installing an upgrade would do just that - UPGRADE the existing software and not install a whole new suite along side the old one.
    Help appreciated!!
    JC

Upgrade does not do that.  There is a good reason for keeping older versions of software even if DW doesn't have that need.  The best program to think of incompatibilities between versions is InDesign.  I've been in the habit of keeping multiple versions of that, or with Photoshop at one point because I could never remember to switch between 64-bit launch and 32-bit launch for some older functions that were not compatible.
All you have to do is:
Mac User - Go to the Utilities folder and there is a folder of Adobe installers in there.  Choose the CS3 uninstaller.
Windows User - Go to the Control Panel-> Programs and click to uninstall CS3.
If the uninstaller is not present you may need your old media to uninstall.  Or you may be able to clean one version as a last resort ( http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html ).

  • Do I need to install CS3 on Windows 7 64 bit before installing CS5 Upgrade?

I am replacing a graphic designer's Windows Vista laptop with a Dell Precision T5500 desktop.  Do I need to uninstall CS3 from the laptop and decommission the serial number?  Then do I need to install CS3 on the new desktop before installing the CS5 upgrade?  I was told I needed to decommission the installation, but I don't remember having to do that with other installations.  Thanks in advance!

You should definetly deactivate any software before uninstalling. But you don't have to install CS3 in order to install CS5. Just have the serial number handy for verification. That said, depending upon the user's needs, you might want to leave CS3 available.
