Uninstalling CS4 from side-by-side CS4+CS5 setup?

I own both Photoshop CS4 and CS5.  When CS5 was released, I downloaded the trial and installed it side-by-side with my CS4.  After the period expired I purchased CS5.  Now both are installed on my machine, and both are fully functional.  My primary questions are as follows:
Is there any advantage to also having CS4? I don't really use it anymore, but IS there something it might be useful for? (That CS5 cannot do?)
Will uninstalling CS4 cause issues with co-dependencies?  i.e., will I be required to re-install CS5 afterwards?
My system is Windows XP 32-bit with SP3, any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Multiple versions of Photoshop can happily coexist on your computer.  More disk space will be taken up, but...
What if you find something you used to be able to do that for some reason you can't do in Photoshop CS5?
What if you want to help people on this forum, and someone says "I have Photoshop CS4..." and you want to try to reproduce their problem?
I advise keeping the old version until you're sure you can do everything you need in CS5.  That said, I haven't needed CS4 since CS5 came out, save for item 2 above.

  • Premiere Pro & Encore Errors - CS4 / CS5 Side-By-Side Install

    Hello, all.
I am trying to use CS Production Premium CS4 and CS5 together on the same machine.  I have been getting some really crazy errors and happenings lately on Premiere Pro (CS4) and Encore (both CS4 & CS5).  In another forum in Creative Cow, someone mentioned that CS4 and CS5 should not live on the same partition, and that may be causing my problems.  You can view that thread here: http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/3/908105.
    The long and short:
I have had CS4 installed for a while on my machine (see specs in the signature line), and installed CS5 alongside using all the default install values.
Taking the troubled applications one at a time, here are some errors I am encountering:
    PREMIERE PRO CS4
Upon launch, the following message appears:
This is what prompted someone to note that CS4 & CS5 should not live on the same partition.  I HAVE SINCE UNINSTALLED CS5 and the error still persists.
    ENCORE CS4
Upon launch, it automatcially crashes and the Windows error messages pop up:
I HAVE SINCE UNINSTALLED CS5 and the error still persists.
    ENCORE CS5:
Shorter DVDs with simple timelines seem to transcode and burn just fine.  However, with longer timelines or more complex projects, it returns the following errors:
A detailed view of the error message is below:
I have not been able to test this after the uninstall of CS5, but I can only assume that it still has this issue.
As far as I can tell, Premiere Pro CS5 works just fine.
In addition to the previous errors, After Effects and Premiere Pro CS5 also have trouble rendering to networked locations (i.e.--mapped drives). The renders fail immediately with "unknown errors".  I am not sure if this has something to do with the side-by-side configuration or not, but it is another issue that has been problematic.  The CS4 versions can render to any location with no problems.
Any guidance on how to get CS4 and CS5 to coexist will be greatly appreciated!  I do need both versions for various reasons, so getting rid of one is not an option (and as the uninstall of CS5 has proven, not effective).
    Thank you!

You can certainly run CS4 and CS5 applications on the same computer, from the same partition, and even at the same time. Problems do ari

  • Help me uninstall cs4 from windows

help me uninstall cs4 from windows I have cs5 and cannot open raw files thru bridge

You can also look in the Windows System Tray for the Bridge CS4 icon and right-click on it. If "Start Bridge at Login" is checked in the menu that shows up, uncheck it to stop Bridge CS4 from starting when you log into Windows, then click on "Exit Bridge."
You can then start Bridge CS5 and launch Camera Raw.

  • Uninstall CS4 after upgrade to CS5?

    Hi -
I just upgraded from Photoshop CS4 to Photoshop CS5.
I had expected CS5 to overwrite and replace CS4, but all the elements of CS4 are still there.
    Should I simply uninstall CS4?
Is there a risk of losing any files if I do so?
If so, what should I back up?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dennis

PS CS4 and PS CS5 can co-exist. You can either use both of them simultaneously or can simply uninstall CS4 if you wish.

  • Uninstalling CS4 after installing CS5

    Hi,
I have just installed the CS5 upgrade (Master Collection). Now I have CS4 and 5 installed, which is unnecessary.
Question 1: Can I uninstall CS4 without deleting any important files like libraries, templates, brushes, actions, etc?
Question 2: What is the best way to uninstall CS4?
    Thanks,
    Rogier

    Hi Roger:
Would be curious to hear what happened with your uninstall. I encountered a similar situation, checked with NAPP due to the many problems I have had with Adobe Support. The uninstall almost worked.
However, when I removed CS4 from my lap top, the CS5 executable programs disappeared from <Start> <All Programs> <Adobe>. I used Explorer to see what files were installed, and they were all there. So I either have to execute them from Explorer, or reinstall to make life a bit easier. So I am in the process of reinstalling. Think I will leave both sets on my Desktop.
Below is the information NAPP sent me. There are some good hints if you have customized Actions.
    From NAPP:
You can uninstall through Start menu> Control Panel> Add and Remove Programs.   But before you do, consider these steps:
    --Open Photoshop CS4.
--In the Actions palette, select a set of custom Actions (a set, not an individual Action).
--From the Actions palette menu select Save Actions.
--Choose a location, assign a name (using the .atn file extension), click Save.
--Repeat for any additional sets of Actions.
--If you have any custom brushes, styles, etc., use Edit> Preset Manager to create and save sets.
    --Quit Photoshop CS4.
    --Open Photoshop CS5.
--From the Actions palette menu choose Load Actions.
--Navigate to and select your .atn files to load them into the palette.
--Use Edit> Preset Manager to load other custom items.
Also check the other programs of the Creative Suite for custom templates and such that you want to save.

  • Just uninstalled CS4 to leave CS5 running, now have an error.

    Hi All.
I just uninstalled cs4 to leave cs5 running, now 5 is saying this, "One or more files in the Adobe Application Support folder, necessary for running Photoshop, are missing.  Please run the Photoshop installer and re-install Photoshop." What have I done wrong!?

Thanks for the reply. Photoshop 5 seems to be working fine except for the error showing when starting up.
So if I reinstall, I just need to reinstall CS5 or CS4?
    Thanks in advance!

  • CS5 for 10.6.8? uninstall CS4 first or just install CS5?

is CS5 compatible with mac OS 10.6.8?
    AND
do I have to uninstall CS4 first or just install CS5 with CS4 already on computer?

Cs5 should run on mac os x 10.6.8
It depends on whether you want to keep cs4 or not.
There is really no need to uninstall cs4, as both cs4 and cs5 can "live together"
If your sure that you don't want to keep cs4, then yes, it would be a good idea to uninstall cs4 before installing cs5.

  • Problem uninstalling CS4 after installing CS5 - help!

    I installed CS5 without a hitch.
I then tried to uninstall CS4. I opened Photoshop and chose Help/Deactivate, taking care to tick the serial number box too.
After the uninstall procedure, I got an message that it had completed but with errors.
In Control Panel/Programs, CS4 is still listed, but now showing only 3.77Mb instead of the 300Mb+ that it was.
I then downloaded Adobe Support Advisor and ran it. The diagnosis directed me to this Knowledge Base Article.......

    1. Can I get rid of what remains of CS4 in my Control Panel?
    2. Will it affect my system in any way?
    3. Will it affect CS5 in any way?
I've never had a problem uninstalling older versions in the past. Not a happy bunny at all!
    Thanks.

ps. I couldn't not insert the above link by right clicking and choosing insert link - had to type it by hand. But, the kb number (403891) is definitely correct.

I've never had a problem uninstalling older versions in the past.
...but then you probably obeyed the correct order in the first place. Anyway, there is no harm in leaving the remnants in place. you can of course make them disappear by removing the relevant registry key(s), but how important that little cosmetic surgery is to you, is for you to decide.

  • From When Adobe CS3, CS4, Cs5, CS5.5 and CS6 will loose activation support like cs and cs2

From When Adobe CS3, CS4, Cs5, CS5.5 and CS6 will loose activation support like cs and cs2

Nobody can tell you that. CS2 activation was turned off because of bugs in the software that made it too difficult to maintain. so far no such thing has been the case with the otehr versions. Either way, if and when that time comes surely Adobe will let you know and provide a solution...

  • Installing CS5, uninstalling CS4

My office just installed CS5 (yeah!) on the MacBookPro I use. It didn't delete or override CS4, which still is in the computer's  applications folder occupying memory. Should I uninstall CS4 or simply delete its folders by hand. I need to make sure I will not uninstall any CS4 pluggins that CS5 needs.

The behavior is as designed. All major versions install independently. The bad news is that you will have to properly uninstall and in the process it will affect CS5's shared components, requiring to reinstall CS5 again afterwards.

  • Can I upgrade a CS4 from the UK with a CS5 I can get from US?

    Hello - can you help?
I bought CS4 Design Premium in the UK last year, and a second seat of CS5 last autumn. We're having problems using both together so I want to upgrade the CS4 to CS5. I can't afford to upgrade both to CS5.5. The only CS4-CS5 upgrade I've found in on Amazon.com in the US. Please can you tell me for sure whether if I buy this, will it upgrade my UK version ok?
    Thank you for your advice.

Thanks for the answer Mylenium, appreciate the help.
The only thing is I'm a bit confused now becuase I've just had an email back from an IT mate of mine:
"I can assure you that you can. I took a copy from the US and installed  it for a friend in the Philippines and it worked just fine. All that  matters is you have a Retail Copy, and a valid license. There are some  region restrictions on some of there products, but thats most based on  the OEM / VL copys and not retail."
So which one is correct? It's kind of important we get this right, it's the difference between about £400 and £1300 for two upgrades... one means I can still pay the bills this month, the other means my kids ain't gonna be getting birthday presents... or food.

nope... this is a known issue for users. Hopefully will be resolved soon (not holding my breath though). Some people have suggested resetting pram, uninstalling flash, quitting Safari, updating java, installing third party mouse driver software etc... but for me nothing has worked yet.
I have 2 monitors and this happens quite a lot, but ONLY on my iMac monitor. If i move the mouse cursor to my second screen it's visible there, move it back to my iMac screen and it disappears.
My workaround is to hover over the dock to claim my cursor back, but that is really just an annoying thing to do every 5 mins.
I am convinced this is a OSX issue but the two companies are just pointing fingers which will not result in any fix any time soon.
Thinking about selling my two Apple machines because of this bug.

  • Warning CS4 CS5 and CS6 Photoshop Action Users

Adobe introduce the Adjustment Panel in CS4 and included two option that you should NEVER CHANGE from their default setting.  For if either or both are change from their default settings some actions that add adjustment layers will fail to work properly. They may or may not produce error pop-ups.
I have been trying to get this fixed for a couple of years now.  The other day I received an e-mail from an Adobe programmer informing me that he had been assigned the task to fix the problems I've been having.  He included information he was considering.  It was clear he did not fully understand the problems and that keeping one of the options would make it impossible to maintain compatibility with previous versions of Photoshop.  I wrote two e-mails explaining the problems and a third detailing what the problems I saw with what was proposing.  He wrote back the all he wanted to do was to work on part of the problem not the whole problem. I wrote a fourth note but Adobe is back is stealth mode.
The two options in the Adjustment Panel fly-out menu are:
"Add Layer Mask by Default" checked by default.  This is how Photoshop always worked prior to CS4 there was never an option not to add one so nothing was ever recorded whether or not a layer mask was to be added they always were.  Changing this will make Photoshop not backward compatible.
"Clip to Layer" not checked by default.  There has always been an option to clip adjustment layers to the previous layer. So when the option is used the action recorder records the option "With Clipping Mask" in the make adjustment layer step.  When the Adjustment Layer is not clipped the option "with Clipping Mask" is not recorded. In the past these recordings played back correctly and still do if the Adjustment Panel fly-out option "Clip to Layer" is not checked.  However if Adjustment Panel option is checked even though is was nit when the action was recorded for the option "With Clipping Mas" is not recorded Photoshop clips the layer because of the Adjustment Panel current Option setting. That could be fixed. The current option setting has no meaning in this context in fact the Adjustment panel may not have even been used to recode the Make Adjustment Layer step.
Here is a link to a simple action recorded in CS6. It opens a new default size document add an Levels Adjustment Layer deletes the layer mask and then clips the adjustment layer to the previous layer.  The Action will play correctly in all versions of Photoshop prior to cs4.  It will fail in CS4, CS5 and CS6 if either or both of the Adjustments Panel fly-out options are changed from their default setting.  http://www.mouseprints.net/old/dpr/CS6AdjLayer.atn

Generally, you would have got the option to remove the old versions.  However, you can uninstall the old versions but you should do it from Windows Add/Remove modules in the Control Panel so that it doesn't remove the common files from your machine.
If you are not constrained by disk space then the best thing is to leave the old programs on the system until you are familiar with the new features of the upgraded program.
I have renmoved the old programs from my Windows 7 because I wasn't using them.  These days I use "Corel Paintshop Pro X5" and "Corel Draw Graphics Suite X6".
Photoshop is for something I need to test for my colleagues who are not familiar with certain features in Corel so I tell them how to do it in PS CS6.
    Hope this helps.

  • Uninstalled CS4 and can't figure out how to get it back

My daughter has been using my copy of CS4 for over a year without issues.  Recently however she began to have some kind of issue with the brushes pixelating.  We deactivated (just to be safe) and uninstalled then reinstalled.  That fixed the problem.  For a short time.  When the issue returned we again deactivated, but this time it somehow did a complete uninstall which included the original setup program maybe?  So, we downloaded PS again but we can only find a way to download PS CC.  Now when we go to put the serial number in, it won't accept it.  Is there someplace we should be downloading CS4 specifically?  I never got disks...only a digital download years ago.  Suggestions?

A piece of advice first.  An uninstall rarely is necessary to solve problems.  You just need to reset preferences by holding down specific keys.
How did you install the first time without disks?  Another word of advice on downloaded programs.  Burn the setup files to disk for future use.
You may have a mess now if you have various versions downloaded.  Uninstall them and download CS4 from http://prodesigntools.com/how-to-get-prior-adobe-software-versions-cs4-cs5.html
Be sure to follow download instructions exactly or you will run into problems.

  • Do I need to uninstall CS4 before installing CS6

    Hello
I'm looking at upgrading from CS4 to CS6.  Is it best practice to remove CS4 first?  My concern is all work created in CS4 may have computability issues with CS6 and perhaps keeping CS4 around isn't a bad idea as a safety net...

It is not a requirement to uninstall CS4 when installing CS6.  As far as upograding from CS4 to CS6 goes you should doublecheck if that is possible.  For products that I am aware of there is no longer an upgrade path from CS4 to CS6, only CS5+.
