Uninstalling Front Row on Lion

ok, I've installed front row via the Mac Hatter loader for Lion. But now I can't seem to get rid of it. Do I simply delete the files that were loaded via the loader or do I need the lion versions of those files?
it loads these:
From: http://www.mac-hatter.com/blog/frontrowenablerforlion
/System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/BackRow.framework
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iPhotoAccess.framework
/System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.RemoteUI.plist
/Applications/Front Row.app
can I simply delete them to get front row off my computer again?
Reasons: I have XBMC which is a little better at doing what I want it to do.

I used clean my mac by macpaw to uninstall it but it didn't do it completely. even though Front Row doesn't show up in the applications folder or in spotlight, it still initiates after selecting Menu on the remote or cmd ESC.
I want to know if deleting these files mentioned above would harm my installation of lion as I didn't back up anything before doing this. you say yes but then you say, just delete it like any other app, but this is a "system app" and doesn't uninstall as easily as draggin the .app into the trash.

  • How do I uninstall Front Row Enabler (Andrew Escobar) ??

    hey everybody
im on a powerbook g4 (power pc) and on 10.4.7
i did that stupid andrew escobar - Front Row Enabler so I could have Front Row on my non-infared powerbook.
it seemed like a cool idea for awhile, now i am in desperate need to update to 10.4.11.
it says in many forums that if you install any 10.4.8 - 10.4.11, front row's bezel patches will crash your computer into a blue screen and you will not be able to login.
i am nervous to update, but i am in desperate need to. does anyone here know how to uninstall this Front Row Enabler? if you would be so kind, that would be great.
    thanks,
    smitt

actually i answered my own question
i located the front row app, deleted it
then i redownloaded my 10.4.7 PPC pkg from Apple
then using pacifist (free DL at versiontracker) i extracted the 2 bezel files (that front row enabler patched to get Front Row to work on a non-Front Row working machine)
i then replaced the corrupted 2 bezel files with the original 10.4.7 bezel files (non-patched) and simply restarted and now it allowed me to update to 10.4.11
    here's the specific instructions, smittay
    Manually Uninstalling Front Row:
    1. Delete Front Row (/System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app).
    2. Download Mac OS X Update 10.4.7 Combo PPC from Apple.
    3. Open the disk image
    4. Download Pacifist and copy application to the Application folder.
    5. Use Pacifist to open the Mac OS X Update Installer package file (which ends in .pkg)
    6. Search for “bezel” and install only these two specific files folders:
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/BezelServices.framework/
    /System/Library/LoginPlugins/BezelServices.loginPlugin/
    7.Restart.

  • Front Row in Lion. Has anyone got it working with iTunes 10.5 yet?

I've got it working with pics and movies by using the method in the link below, but not with the library in iTunes 10.5.
    http://www.cultofmac.com/106874/use-front-row-in-os-x-lion-video-how-to/

Yes I know. I'm very annoyed that Apple have dropped Front Row from Lion, it removes quite a bit of functionality from my iMac. I use it a lot. I've tried Plex, but don't like it at all.

  • Front row in Lion 10.7 issue (-70012) and video_ts not playing issue -solved

    Hi all,
thought I just post my solution to the front row issues in 10.7. I looked for a solution for days, and when I found it, I thought it would make other peoples live easier if I combine everything in one post.
I actually had a couple of issues:
    PROBLEM:
first front row stopped playing VIDEO_TS files in 10.6.
the second issue occurred when I thought upgrading to 10.7 would solve the issue; Front row still couldn't play the VIDEO_TS, because FRONT ROW was gone...
    SYMPTOMS:
both issues always showed the same symptoms:
when a dvd-back folder was selected, front row would show a black screen, and then, caused by my frantic pushing the ESC button, front row would give me the dvd player not valid -70012 error.
    CAUSE:
so what happened? I chose to buy my MBP 17" with the smallest HDD (yep sorry, was cheap-s-ing). Then later that year, I decided to buy the HDD caddy and switch my internal superdrive for a SSD. I ended up placing the original HDD in the hdd caddy, which I then put in the Superdrive's slot, and I placed the SSD in the slot where the original HDD was residing first. I now had a MBP 17" late 2011, with vertex3 SSD. I forgot, I also put in 16 GB, replacing the 8 GB.
So, when I back-upped all my favorite DVDs as VIDEO_TS files, (no I did not download dvds through usenet), grabbed the popcorn, and started Front Row, the disappointment began. No VIDEO_TS file would play, always the same -70012 error message. So after a lot of internet research I stumbled upon a guy who said: yeah, you have to upgrade to 10.7. After the upgrade my FRONT ROW was gone.
    SOLUTIONS:
    In 10.6:
As Apple's DVD player is always looking for the internal dvd player as a prerequisite to start, Front Row, which uses Apple's DVD player as video player, will throw up the -70012 error. 'Cause it finds the HDD in the HDD Caddy instead of the SuperDrive. So in 10.6 (and in 10.7 also) you can use the following solution:
(I got this solution partial from http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20070591-263.html)
1: modify the DVDPlayback framework that the DVD Player uses so that it will recognize external drive as a valid DVD playback device. (The HDD Caddy came with an external casing for the SuperDrive)
    2: download a hex editor (I used Hexedit 220 from http://hexedit.sourceforge.net/ )
3: Go to the folder /System/Library/Frameworks/ and back up the file "DVDPlayback.framework."
4: Open Hexedit_220 and use it to open the following file:/System/Library/Frameworks/DVDPlayback.framework/Versions/A/DVDPlayback.
5: Using the editor's find&replace through COMMAND-F, replace "Internal" with the text "External" and save the file. Note that Hexedit also saves a backup automatically.
6: Close the file once saved, and then run a permissions fix on the boot drive using Disk Utility. Then restart the system and you should now be able to play DVDs off the external drive using DVD Player. That is, If you use an external dvd player (which I don't use).
7: I inserted a very small USB stick in the MBP with no data on it, and Front Row and Apple DVD Player accepted this. I could now play my backupped DVDs.
ofcourse, I still wanted to upgrade to 10.7, so here's the solution to 10.7
    10.7:
upgrading was a simple click with the mouse, worked like a charm, Office still worked, and some minor updates installed through software.
    Front Row however, gone...
I used the steps outlined in http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/21/front-row-for-mac-os-x-lion/ to get Front Row back:
    - first get the package from Madhatter: Download the free package installer by MacHatter
    - install, or customize the install
    - all done.
Then I used the steps from step 3 through 7 outlined above in solution 10.6.
    Catch:
So I did not find a solution to fooling the DVD Player / Front Row with the USB stick. So everytime I watch VIDEO_TS in Front Row the USB stick must be inserted. But, the good news, I can still use my remote control for something.
Hope I helped some guys out there with this solution.
    Regards,
    Johnno

The issue has previously hit Apple TV owners. I think people came to the conclusion that it was a HDMI handshake problem. Basically the process where the device and TV greet each other, make up some rules about communicationg and what their secret key is and so on.
I haven't tried this yet, but my local service center says that basically I can do one of two things:
    - Downgrade to 10.7 and then download the 10.7.1 update from Apples website. To do this without having a Mac OS X Lion disc, you can hold down CMD + R when the computer boots to be able to access the recovery partition on newer Macs that come without the OS disc.
    or..
    - Put something in between the computer and TV. For example, if you're using an amplifier as a part of your home theather set up, this will probably work. The service guy said he has his Mini connected to the amplifier, which in turn is connected to speakers and a projector. The inverted colors still appear, but only once per night (i.e. after the first problem is reset by resetting the link then it's fine).
For now, I'll do my little dance of changing the source on the TV from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2 and then back again to reset the link... But, I'll probably try downgrading in a few days.

  • Where is front row in lion?

anyone know where lion moved front row to?  did they eliminate it?  don't tell me i need to boot up my old laptop for this presentation!

Apple considers Front Row as obsolete with with all the new features lately such as AirPlay, etc.

  • Is there an alternative to Front Row in lion?

I understand Front Row is no longer available in Lion. Is ther an appropriate alternative? I find Front Row a much better interface for playing music than iTunes, as it matches the interface on the ATV.

You are not alone with FrontRow, however if you copy the following back from your SL installation it seems to work
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/BackRow.framework
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iPhotoAccess.framework
    /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.RemoteUI.plist
    /Applications/Front Row.app
    (Caveat installer - YMMV )

  • How do I get Front Row to work with Lion?

    Hello fellow Mac users,
How do I get Front Row to work with Lion? I have an iMac 27 inch computer and is the sole entertainment provider for my bedroom. I refuse to put a TV in my room and wanted to know how to get Front Row to work again on my mac? It seems that the upgrade to Lion erased the app.
I have quite a few movies and series that I bought off iTunes and is a shame that I can't use a media center app like Front Row on Lion.

I kind of have the opposite problem. I need to know how to turn off my remote on the computer. I am using the remote for my Apple TV and it keeps making the volume on my Computer go up and down (with annoying sounds).
There used to be a way to un-sync the remote with the comp but I cannot remember how and the Apple help is not much help! I have Lion.
    Thanks!
    Best,
    Tony

  • Mountain Lion hostile to Front Row?

Mounting Lion seems hostile to Front Row, which would still work under Lion, with some persuasion.
It's all well and good to say it's been discontinued…
Why sell Mac Mini with HDMI and discontinue Front Row ? What are Apple customers expected to use?
Mounting Lion upgrade process lets Front Row application through.
Front Row doesn't even attempt to launch, as if it's being blocked deliberately.
If there a fix or terminal option to get Front Row working again, could someone please let us know. It's not like there's any Apple replacement.
Or any other company for that matter. And no, Plex is hopless, it ignores folder structure, it's useless to me. Put an alias in your Movie's folder and you can see anything you want in Front Row.
    Simple, just works, just abandoned.
    Off to apple.com/feedback, now.

Thanks, I'll answer the "try Plex, it's great" suggestion, only once.
I have installed Plex, but can't wait to remove it. It's too complex and dumb. Front Row is simple and flexible and doesn't require me to run a server or nominate folders separately, just to make it useable. Front Row lets me dig around folders as I create them and is generally clean/simple and all I need.
When I want Hollywood movie meta data assigned to budgie videos from YouTube, I'll be singing the praises of Plex all over the internet. If that's cataloguing, I can live without it. I have tonnes of files, they're -catalogued- into folders. Until Apple loses the plot completely and scraps the file system, I'm safe from meddling by any number of Apps (which come and go over time).
The remote seems to work OK with Plex without Buddy, better than iTunes actually. Somebody must have fixed iTunes to stop responding to the remote, as well. Charming.
Merely deleting Front Row from Lion, apparently wasn't bloody-minded enough, Mountain Lion seems to single out Front Row - gives no error when you launch it, just refuses to let it run. An awful lot of hostility to what appears to be a simple skin for QuickTime.
How much trouble would it be for Apple to Open Source Front Row and let those that want it, run it?

  • Hi ! guys i've recently upgraded my macbook pro from snow leopard to lion.....now my front row app. is missing........is this a lion upgrade or a error.....pls help!!

i've recently upgraded my mac book's os from snow leoopard to lion.......nd i've noticed that front row app. is missing........i miss its liquid graphics of displaying entertainment stuff.........is this an os upgrade or error ....

No. There is no Front Row as part of Lion. But you might like to visit: Install Front Row on Lion.

  • Will can replace Front Row and play podcast from itunes?

One thing I did with Front Row pre-Lion that I can't do with Lion is watch video podcasts on my MacMini connected to my SDTV (no HDMI). Plex doesn't seem to have any connection to iTunes. Is there any Front Row replacement that will let me watch my video podcasts?

new2appletv, I think you missed roestuff's point. They were wanting to BUY a HD movie -- not copy it.
It's frustrating that we can live in a complete HD environment with a Mac Mini, UNTIL we start downloading from iTunes. The alternative to downloading from iTunes, is to buy the DVD or Blu-Ray, both of which are no less "copyable", than the output from the Mac Mini. As all movie/music pirates have shown over the years -- where there's a will, there's a way.
I share the frustration. I have an XServe, a Mac Pro & 3 Mini's running a home theater & TV network around my house. I can happily watch, AND RECORD, HD content from TV stations. I'm not into pirating -- it is all for my own use. Because of alleged "abuse" by some users, I can only expand to 1 further Mac on my network due to the 5 machine limit imposed by iTunes. My frustration is that the content doesn't even leave my house (except for when it is on my iPhone).
Apple need to learn to negotiate better, particularly if they want to be at the centre of a digital world. I can buy a Tivo for the same price as a Mac Mini, and a Tivo doesn't have all of the restrictions placed on it that the Macs do. I feel sometimes that Apple try to prove that they are the Volvo drivers of an online world -- but uncertain what they are trying to achieve.

  • Now that there is no more Front Row...

is there something else to replace it? We used to watch the movies on iTunes using Front Row, now my $20 remote seems uselesss...

You can get Front Row back.
    Here is a guide:
    http://www.tuaw.com/2011/07/21/how-to-install-front-row-on-lion/
Basically any media player out there (VLC, MPlayerX, iTunes, Quicktime etc.) have support for the Apple Remote. You can download one of these for free, if you feel like it. (MPlayerX available through the Mac App Store)
The package for Front Row can be found here:

  • How can I use apple remote with Mountain Lion? Any Front Row alternative?

    Hi All,
I recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
All great except for my Apple Remote control.
Before, I could effectively control my iMac media with Apple Remote by using Front Row (music, photos, videos, good integration with iTunes and iPhoto).
Now, as I understand, Front Row is expired.
So, my Apple remote still works but with very limited options (just music, forward, backward and volume), and it's a real pity.
Any of you Guys know how to restore Front Row?
Otherwise maybe suggest an alternative (sth similar, should allow iMac media control by Apple Remote)?
So far I tried to restore all Front Row files by a Time Capsule Snow Leopard backup (as indicatred on some other Communities).
To restore was easy, but then, no way to launch it.
    Any advice will help!
    Thanks in advance/all the best.
    Marco

Thanks Klaus1 for your prompt answer, although I went again through a dated discussion.
I also got the feeling that somehow they want to push Apple TV..
But, respectfully speaking towards our Friends at Apple, is it fair to promise what you don't deliver?
I have choosen apple because I percive it's different.
    At currently published link: http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC377Z/A/apple-remote
    they do promote the following:
    Apple Remote with Mac
The Apple Remote gives you total command of your music, photos, videos and DVDs from anywhere in the room. It works with Front Row - a menu-based, full-screen interface - to make accessing the digital content on your Mac as simple as navigating your iPod. When you press the Menu button, your desktop fades and the sleek, Front Row interface takes its place, to give you control over your music in iTunes, your photos in iPhoto, the videos in your Videos folder and your DVDs. Turn up the volume. Shuffle. Skip to the next chapter on your DVD. Play a slide show, a home video that you made in iMovie, even a film trailer.
Compatible with Apple products introduced in 2005 or later that have a built-in infrared (IR) receiver. Not compatible with MacBook Pro with Retina display.
Cost for this is 15£ (19€).
Now, I have iMac and Mac Book Pro (no retina display) both with Mountain Lion installed, and I understand both of them are not compatible with Front Row.
Actually I adore apple tv and I got 2 at home nicely working on 2 different TVs.
So I accomplished twice their wish of selling this product to me.
Why shall they deceive me (and many others, as I read) by killing a still promised service?
Should I read all forums before buying a trusted-brand-product like apple, to ensure that id does what declared?
Don't get me wrong, I'm an enthusiast user of the whole apple family, since many years, and still I am.
Just politely complaining for this decision, which creates to Many an easy avoidable disservice.
    Cheers
    Marco
