Uninstalling iTunes has taken away my DVD/CD drive - seeking guidance

Hello. This is on a Vista SP1 laptop. Last week I uninstalled iTunes because I don't use it and I wanted to reclaim disk space. Since then my built-in DVD/CD drive has not been recognized by Windows. It does not appear in My Computer or iTunes. I have tried re/uninstalling iTunes 8 multiple times as well as the latest Gear drivers. I have tried the registry modifications regarding the "UpperFilters" key. You can see a snapshot of the current registry here:
http://www.mikeseyes.com/computers
Is there anything else I can try? Reformatting my PC and installing a fresh copy of Windows seems unimaginable at the moment. Please help if you can.
Thank you.

Anyone have any insight on this? I'm grateful for any assistance. Thank you.

iTunes has taken my money but no song has been downloaded onto my ipod touch or computer, How do I get my song or money back?
I cannot seem to trace where the purchase went but it money is gone from account and I have no song.
    Please help!

    Starting at the end:
    - When the movie or tv show does transfer onto your iphone/ipod touch you will be able to see it in the expanded view of your device in the "DEVICES" section.
    - If the files are not on your device, then:
-- confirm you have SD or HD-SD video. HD-only content will not play and probably will not even sync. iTunes seems to reliably have SD versions with their HD distributions so this should not be an issue
-- confirm you are synch-ing the content to the ipod device by browsing the DEVICE view's Movie or TV Show tabs to confirm the movie or episode is 'checked'
    - If the files are on the iPod and you cannot find them, check your Settings: General for Restrictions.  If you restrict, for example the movies to "G" rating. PG and higher movies will sync but you will not be able to find them on the iPod!

  • Please Help, iTunes has taken my right to play certain songs

Please Help, iTunes has taken my right to play certain songs.
These were free songs with coco-cola codes some time ago.
Now in Mtn Lion it has took the playing rights from me and locked them off!
Anybodys help on this subject is much appreciated...

    Yes it worked,
Right-click in it > Show in Finder. Finally, right-click in that file > Get Info > Sharing & Permissions. See if you have got read permission,
Clicked through the Get Info > Sharing & Permissions and when I closed the window the song played again.
Not sure why but it worked for me!

  • Installing and then uninstalling iTunes has slowed Win7 PC

I installed iTunes on my newish Win7 PC but had a problem with the PC being 'not authorized'.  Despite many many hours of reading Apple help and Googling I could not resolve the issue.  Decided to give up on iTunes and stay with Windows Media Player. Uninstalled iTunes and now my PC is running slower than before the iTunes install/uninstall.
Apple, I am not happy that your software has messed up my PC.

Thank you both. I suppose I should have prefaced my question with the concern that I've read a number of other posts from people who have had a similar issue and when they tried to follow the directions, they ran into a multitude of other problems. As you might imagine, I'm hoping to avoid the creation of new problems as I try to solve this one. Thanks again.

  • How can I load itunes and not lose my dvd-rw drive using widow vista?

I have downloaded iTunes to my windows Vista and lost my dvd-rw drive.  Is there a fix for this?

Could you post your diagnostics for us please?
In iTunes, go "Help > Run Diagnostics". Uncheck the boxes other than DVD/CD tests, as per the following screenshot:
    ... and click "Next".
When you get through to the final screen:
... click the "Copy to Clipboard" button and paste the diagnostics into a reply here. (Use your Ctrl-V keyboard shortcut to paste.)

  • ITunes has kidnapped my CD/DVD drive!

    CD/DVD Problems
    1) I had been using itunes version 6.0.5.20 with no problems.
    2) I upgraded to itunes version 7.0.0.70 in late September.
    3) I recorded some CD’s from my library, using the itunes software, with no problems. However:
    A) The AV buttons on my keyboard no longer work, including eject
When I try to eject, I get a message that reads:
Cannot open the tray of the optical drive. Please try again to eject the tray after close the all using softwares or after shutdown the system and then start the Windows. If none of the above options work, insert a thin, straight object (such as a paper clip) in the manual eject hole in the side of the drive. (Yes it will open this way)
    B) I can open the drive using the manual button on the drive.
    C) The drive will read CD roms and DVDs, but not blank media; I get an error message that reads: F:/ is not accessible, incorrect function
    4) I went to the itunes help page. I sorted through numerous documents in the FAQ section, trying to find a solution to my problem. I also emailed the support desk, which told me to look through the FAQ section for help. I sorted through the FAQs again. I found many people had the same problem, and the solution for them was to disable third party device filters in Windows XP. Since this was totally out of my realm, I had my brother, a software engineer do it.
    5) I contacted Sony for help, they basically told me, not their problem.
    6) I have removed all itunes software from my computer
    7) I have removed and replaced my CD/DVD drive in hardware manager
    8) I have downloaded and installed a driver update for my CD/DVD drive
    9) I have tried reverting to an earlier, “Safe” configuration, but there is not one before this problem occurred.
    10) I have purchased System Recovery disks from Sony, but short of totally reinstalling windows, there is nothing that fixes this problem.
I am obviously at wits end. This has gone on now for 3 months. I need help!

  • ITunes Has Disabled My CD/DVD Drive - can anyone help ?

    Hi,
I recently bought a 5th Generation iPod Video 30gb, and have some issues with the iTunes software.
I am running a fairly new (4/5 months old) Packard Bell PC with Windows XP Home and have Sonic RecordNow CD burning software.
    Here's the problem....
When I tried to load the iTunes software from the CD that came in the box, it allowed me to install it, but then when I double-clicked the icon to launch it, I just got a Windows error message (the type that says windows has encountered an error and needs to close - would you like to send a report to Microsoft Yes/No). iTunes would not load at all.
Also, my CD/DVD drive then disappeared from the system. When I ran a check through System Tools, it said that the drivers had loaded properly, but that a CD/DVD device could not be found.
So, I did a System Restore to a few days before and the drive re-appeared and worked fine.
Next step, I downloaded iTunes from the Apple website. This time everything worked fine. I spent the entire day (much to the annoyance of my wife) transferring CDs to iTunes - no problems - iPod synchronised fine etc.
Then, a day later, I decided to carry on transferring my CD collection, but the CD drive has disappeared again - system tools says that the drivers have loaded correctly, but that a CD device cannot be found (Error 41).
Any ideas - I'd like not to have to do another restore, as I presume I'll lose all the CD data that I've transferred so far. Some other websites have suggested I edit the BIOS to point the system towards the CD drive. Slightly nervous about doing this (if indeed it's the right thing to do anyway) and wouldn't really know how.
Also, I did think about un-installing Sonic RecordNow and re-installing iTunes, but then I look in add/remove programs, it's not there.
I'm at a loss - any help would be greatly appreciated.
I await a response with eager anticipation.
    Thanks,
    Jon (United Kingdom).

    hi Pricey!

transferring my CD collection, but the CD drive has
disappeared again - system tools says that the

  • IMovie '09 has taken away my will to live as it hangs up all the time

Here I was happy as a clam working away with iMovie 6 and for some reason I felt that I should upgrade my OS and my iLife. Ha! Now iMovie is killing me. I'm in the middle of a big transfer of all of my old videotape to DVD's and now I'm stuck.
Every time I drag a clip to the project window the program hangs and I have to force quit to get out. Help!
I downloaded version 8.02 but it still does it every time.

    Hi
    Sounds Alarming ! A Mac isn't worth it !
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    iMovie pref file resides:
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named: com.apple.iMovie.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
From LKN 1935: (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Itunes has taken money out of my bank and I haven't purchased anything. please check and advise ASAP

My account has been debited for a total of £49.45p over the course of 2 days, namely 21st and 22nd of January 2013.
I / we have not downloaded any music over these 2 days. I expect you to reimburse this money forthwith.

Please be aware that you are not communicating with Apple when you post in these forums. The only people who will reply to your posts are your fellow users, and we cannot check nor refund anything.
The most immediate thing you need to do is to call your bank and report the unauthorized charges. Your bank can contact Apple if they need additional information.
Next, log into your iTunes Store account and see if the purchases are reflected in the Purchase History. If they are, immediately change the password to your iTunes Store account, making sure it's not something easily guessed or looked up. Then go here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/
and follow the instructions to report the issue to the iTunes Store.
If the charges are not reflected in the Purchase History, then it's most likely a fraudulent charge to your bank account directly rather than an unauthorized purchase through your iTunes Store account in which case it will be up to your bank to handle.
    Regards.

  • ITunes has taken over my computer

Don't get me wrong--I really like iTunes since I bought an iPod Nano and installed iTunes on my computer. But...I seem to have lost control of all things audio. When I put in a CD, it plays in iTunes instead of Windows Media Player like before. When I play a song from the My Music folder, it plays in iTunes instead of WMP as before. I'd just like to have a choice. What do I do? Thanks.

Just as an experiment try approaching it the other
way. Find a song in windows explorer, right click and
select properties. The 'opens with' will (in your
case) likely show iTunes. Click the Change button and
find your preferred player and ok that choice. It
should change all files of that music type to play in
    new player.
    Windows XP Pro
Thanks. I did that with a CD and it worked just fine because I got the drop-down box allowing me to choose the player for all similar files. When I tried it with an individual song in Explorer, it did just as you said except that it made the change only for that song (file). I checked other songs' properties and they all have itunes as the choice, so it appears I would have to change every one of them. BTW, I have a grandson who is a sophomore at the University of Michigan in the USA who is studying right now at the University of Melbourne. He says everybody he has met in Australia is nice.

  • It appears that Apple has taken away the ability to highlight, in color, file names, replacing them with just a hard-to-see colored dot. Can I get back the ability to highlight the whole file name in color?!

It appears that Maverick has banishd the ability to highlight, in color, file folder names, replacing the color highlight band with a hard-to-see color dot. Is there a way to get the color-band highlight ability to operate?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Apple has replaced that feature in OS X Mavericks by color tags, so you cannot get it back. The only thing you can do is to send feedback to Apple about it, so they will think about including it in future OS X versions > http://www.apple.com/feedback

  • ITunes Has taken over my computer. It's like the Sorcerer's Apprentice.

ITunes won't stop opening of its own accord every few minutes and starts playing the first song on my playlist. I have tried all the usual rememdies and nothing works. I downloaded the latest update that put my music in the Cloud just a couple of days ago, and I can only imagine that this is related to that. Any suggestions? Right now I'm living with the sound turned off and it's a pain. Thanks

Do you by chance have speakers connected to your computer or an ear piece plugged in? Then that may be causing the problem, see this thread:
iTunes opens and starts playing music randomly

  • ITunes has taken upon itself to delete most of my podcast back catalogue -- what is wrong with you people?  Why do you allow it to do this?

I am absolutely furious about this.  Why was this allowed to happen? I now have to re-download every single ******* podcast I've ever subscribed to -- some of which are now lost forever because they're no longer posted -- THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.

This just happened to me this morning. I clicked Podcasts in intunes 11.1.2 on my PC and selected a Podcast to see if it had downloaded the latest video this week.  I clicked the circular refresh button which used to check for and display any new podcasts.  Then all the sudden the Podcast I was looking at and another one just disappeared.  I used Windows explorer to navigate to the itunes media folder which stores my podcasts and the two podcast folders are gone. They are not in the Recycle Bin nor have they been moved to another location.  I had at least 3 years worth of Podcasts stored here and iTunes on a whim just decided to delete them from my Harddrive without asking me.  These were educational Podcasts which we watch from time to time.  I could download them again which would take days but how can I trust that they will not be deleted again?  We hadn't watched all the episodes but iTunes kept track of the ones which had been viewed.  What now?
This is infuriating.   I will never be able to trust iTunes on the PC again.

  • ROM drive dissappears after uninstalling itunes

I downloaded itunes so I could buy an album (I could only find this album in the itunes shop) and after buying it, trying and failing to burn the album to CD I gave up and uninstalled itunes in disgust. The DVD-ROM drive icon is now gone from explorer and won't reappear whatever I do. I can't even reinstall the OS (Windows 2000 pro) as the computer thinks the drive dosen't exist. I looked around online and think something called a rootkit maybe to blame that was probably in the music files as some sort of anti piracy device. This rootkit may have been affected by some other software on my PC and deleted something somewhere (yeah I know, pretty vague). I've tried everything I know including registry repair, re-installing the drivers, putting a new ROM drive in, even re-installing itunes all with no luck. Has anyone else heard of this? Please help me.
