Uninstalling itunes8
Hi
I was wondering how to get back my old itunes. I don't like how you can't see your full list of songs and can't just put it on random and let any music play. Does anyone know how to do this or how to reinstall an older itunes version??
Thanks
I tried the suggested fix on Apple's site (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2372?viewlocale=en_US) but both my DVD drives remained invisible.
Then I tried the one at MS suggested by Adrian Kingsley-Hughes on his ZDNet blog (http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=2600):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Hooray! It worked! Not only have my drives reappeared, but I am burning a DVD right now using InfraRecorder.
Unfortunately, now I get a nasty message about missing registry data whenever I start iTunes, but I assume Apple will fix this problem in some future release. I'll have to live with it until then.
I spent hours on this today and almost ordered some new SATA drives, thinking the IDE controller on my mobo must have gone bad. I really appreciate the existence of Adrian's blog and other third party resources!
And I am very annoyed at Apple right now. Releasing software that breaks peoples' computers in a major way is not acceptable, IMHO. Leaving the bad software out there and posting fixes that don't work is even worse.
BTW, I am running XP Pro SP2. I have Logitech hardware and software installed, as well as a number of other USB devices (Treo, Canon printer and scanner, iPod) so (according to Adrian and other sources) I guess I was a likely victim.
Note that, having been burned before by new major releases of iTunes, I was cautious: I held off on installing iTunes 8 until the second release, hoping they'd have fixed any really bad bugs that showed up in the first release by then.
Silly me.

ITunes8 -- all optical drives stopped working
After installing iTunes 8, all my optical drives stopped working. Windows simply didn't recognize them. Device manager said they were missing. However the BIOS found them. Uninstalling iTunes8 fixed it.
However, like everyone else here, now I can't return to a previous version of iTunes because it refuses to recognize my library file (a .itl file).

What can I do, to either use an older version of iTunes, or fix this problem?I tried the suggested fix on Apple's site (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2372?viewlocale=en_US) but both my DVD drives remained invisible.

Just got a Dell Studio. Loaded iTunes 8.
I have my iTunes library currently on a work laptop and want to move my iTunes music to this new personal laptop by synching it to the new laptop.
At first my iPOD Nano (2nd generation) was not identified as a USB device or removable drive. iTunes recognzed it, could see the name and contents of the nano. All files on iPod are grey - not accessible. Tried to Synch. Windows said there was something wrong with the device. Couldn't scan the iPod; when I would hit synch the same windows dialogue box would come up asking if I wanted to scan and fix or proceed without doing that; proceeding closed the dialogue box. trrying to synch again just opened the same dialogue box. That loop initiated regardless of which USB port used.
Called Dell support. Removed USB wireless mouse - not the issue. Uninstalled iTunes8. The laptop would see the iPOD as a removable device, saw files on the iPod but not music files.
After over an hour with Dell they concluded that the issue was a Vista - iTunes 8 issue.
Before and after these un/install, synch and the DELL diagnostic efforts, my iPOD still wroks on my work laptop - an HP x60 running Windows XP.
Any suggestions?
Thanks -Updating drivers, don't forget to use Driver Sweeper, safe boot, and be sure to use Programs control panel to uninstall, might want to check in /AppData to remove preferences and such. (I would also backup your library, and if you have iTunes 7.7.1, keep that around for now.)

Error installing iTunes 8 && uninstalling iTunes 7.7
I'm having a problem upgrading to iTunes 8.
My OS is Vista Ultimate 64-bit.
When installing iTunes 8 64-bit installer the setup processes reaches the "Coping New Files" stage, the progress bar pauses for a few moments, then the status changes to "Rolling Back". The installer goes to the finish page with the message:
"+The installer encountered errors before iTunes could by configured.+
+Your system has not been modified. To retry these operations at a later time, please run the installer again.+"
This occurs with the iTunes 8 32-bit installer as well.
iTunes 7.7 32-bit is currently installed. When I attempt to uninstall through Windows Add/Remove the status progress bar crashes without error during the uninstall. iTunes 7.7 is still in my program list. I attempted the "repair" option for iTunes to the same effect.
Anyone know what is being checked to make the iTunes 8 setup be rejected?
Is there a good way to manually remove iTunes?I have *Windows Vista 32 bit*, so BE CAREFUL with this reply, since I noticed you have a 64 bit machine. I just updated from iTunes7 to iTunes8, and got an error, with both iTunes8 and Quicktime 7.5.5. A solution has been posted by "rjchaney". If you go to the disscussion thread search and type:
'Error 46 could not load or find the Quick Time ActiveX Control', without the quotes, then narrow the results by 'rjchaney', you will see a response from 'rjchaney' from Houston, TX to 'aveniras'. _*THIS SOLUTION WORKED on my dell windows vista 32 bit computer.*_ Apparently, the permissions have to be reset in the REGISTRY ! You have to run the command prompt window as an Administrator, for the reset.cmd file to be correct. Since Apple approved this solution for me, _*I think the solution to a 64 bit machine might be similar. I don't know if this will work for you.*._ Just check the commands in the reset.cmd file, and maybe this will work for you.
_*THIS SOLUTION WORKED on my dell windows vista 32 bit computer.*_
In case you don't want to search, I am copying and pasting the solution from 'rjchaney' here:
There is an old NT utility called SubInAcl.exe that can be used to reset permissions in Windows XP and also in Vista.
Step 1: Download subinacl.msi from the link
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=23418 and install it.
Step 2: Download a modified version of reset.cmd from here
http://gerger.com/o/assets/x/?id=22540
and save the file in 'C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools'.
Step 3: Open Command Prompt and type the following without quotes (hit Enter):
'cd c:\program files\windows resource kits\tools'
Step 4: Now type 'reset.cmd' and hit Enter (without quotes)
You will see the Command Line Tool running for some seconds. The issue should have been fixed and Quicktime should run again.

Error 2738 when trying to uninstall Quicktime
Let's start off with this - I'm an idiot when it comes to PC's so keep the replies low level ?
Failed to upgrade to iTunes8 so was following the troubleshooting guide, removed itunes fine, didn't restart as per the instructions but Quicktime would not uninstall, returning this error code.
So now I don't have iTunes at all.
Was using standard control panel/programs and features/uninstall windows functions.
What do I do next ???Possible solution http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1331?viewlocale=en_US

Cannot uninstall iTunes 8. How can I do it manually?
Hi folks,
I installed iTunes8 and I want to uninstall it.
When I use the the uninstall option of Windows Vista I receive an error message that a key cannot be accessed (odd, I am admin).
I cannot install any other iTunes (7 or 8) because "A newer Version is already installed".
Now I like to uninstall it manually. I already removed all iTunes folder and registries from my computer, but the problems remain. Still I receive the error messages posted above. Is there anything else I should try? Is there some kind of override mode?
The OS is Windows Vista 64.It depends on which iMac you have. If it is a PPC (G4 or G5) iMac you cannpt upgrade beyond Leopard 10.5.8, and you cannot synch with an iPhone 5.
If it an Intel iMac you need to first purchase Snow Leopard 10.6 and update iTunes:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
(NB: PowerPC applications can still be run in Snow Leopard using Rosetta, but they will not work in later versions of OS X.)
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
and in the UK:
http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes.
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
Xserve (Early 2009)
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
or Mountain Lion:

Another problem when trying to open iTunes8 for the first time
I have just downloaded iTunes8 and after the installation received the message: - "iTunes has been installed successfully./"
However, when trying to open it, I too have a problem and the message I get is: - "iTunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing. Please re-install iTunes."
The previous version ran OK and I have de-installed it and re-installed it 3 times and each time I get the same message that it has been installed successfully but the same message sayind ome files are missing when I try to open it.
I have checked the QTime is up to date and it is. Anyone else had this problem?I am getting this error message as well. I have just downloaded Lightroom recently. I try to click on Lightroom / preferences....and nothing happens. I tried to uninstall and it is greyed out so I can't do that either. Suggestions? Please help?

Itunes8- won't recognize anything, any ideas???
I upgraded to itunes8 on XP. It installs successfully but won't recognise any music even after I've uninstalled, reset folder and ripped a new CD (this aside from the full library music I have but now can't access!!!) Bascially it loads up (the initial screen is purple which is strange). It rips and imports albums OK, but if you come out of itunes and go back in it's back to purple screen and no music. I've tried getiting rid of anything that may conflict it just seems that it doesn;t work correctly. Can anyone suggest anything?? Thanks JK

What happened first is Firefox was revving and using most of my CPU, ultimately "not responding" too easily and for too long, so I closed it in order to reopen it, but Firefox remained running in background (Task Mgr, Processes) after closing, continuing to use almost all my CPU, so I ended the process in Task Mgr.
When I went to re-open it, window opened and told me Firefox could not be opened because another "instance"(?) was still running, to close it or restart Windows. I couldn't close it because I already closed it AND ended the process, so I restarted Windows.
When I tried to open Firefox, I got the same pop-up. I think I restarted Windows one more time, and then uninstalled Firefox, except for my personal settings (in order to save the bookmarks, which I couldn't find in the Firefox folder in Program Files (only Favorites, which were not my bookmarks; I later wondered if they were part of the Firefox add-on "Add This" --??).
I then uninstalled Firefox and re-installed it. When I tried to start the newly re-installed program, I had the same pop-up telling me Firefox was already running and to close it or restart Windows.
I searched my computer folders for anything that might help, did a Search of the computer for "Firefox", and was given some Firefox folders and if they weren't from the new re-install, I deleted them. One thing I noticed was that the program folder did NOT have the program (Firefox.exe) icon to start Firefox.
I uninstalled Firefox and had to resort to using Internet Explorer, which I do NOT like. My rich library of bookmarks are who knows where.
I don't know if this is related, but in searching my computer's Administrative Services and Component Tools (and the like) hoping to find something that would help me fix Firefox, I inadvertently learned that "MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap-in might not have been installed correctly. Name: .NET Framework 1.1 Config."
Please help me get Firefox back and figure out what is going on in my computer that led to this. I am a basic user and not techno-computer saavy, so if anyone can help me with this, please give me step-by-step bonehead instructions.
Thank you so much for any help you can offer!Make sure that Firefox is set as the default browser.

I have tried everything that I know to uninstall the new version of Firefox. I also installed Aurora beta and it had the same behavior and I was able to uninstall that. I cannot open a ff browser to work on it using much of your support information. I click on icon but it does not start on the desktop but task manager shows it as running. I have to end task in task manager to close it. I can't uninstall it and have tried system restore but that also doesn't work because of another issue with my antivirus program.
If this is on a Windows computer, check this Microsoft link;
'''''[http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall Fix problems that programs cannot be installed or uninstalled]''''' -
The long and short of it all is basically in my question, but if you have any specific questions I can answer for more help, please contact me at [email protected]
Use a clean uninstall tool like Revo Uninstaller to remove the program. After the program is removed go into your programs folder and delete the Mozilla software folder. The last step is to open up regedit, find HKEY...SOFTWARE tab and delete the Mozilla string. After you've done all of those things reinstall Firefox and you should be good to go.

=========== =======
TOTAL 1.4G
TOTAL, minus reserved VM space 373.3MYou installed the "Genieo" rootkit. The product is a fraud, and the developer knowingly distributes an uninstaller that doesn't work. I suggest the tedious procedure below to disable Genieo. This procedure may leave a few small files behind, but it will permanently deactivate the rootkit (as long as you never reinstall it.)
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data. You must know how to restore from a backup even if the system becomes unbootable. If you don't know how to do that, or if you don't have any backups, stop here and ask for guidance.
Step 1
In the Applications folder, there should be an item named "Genieo". Select it and open the Finder Info window. If it shows that the Version is less than 2.0, download and install the current version from the genieo.com website. This may seem paradoxical, since the goal is to remove it, but you'll be saving yourself some trouble as well as the risk of putting the system in an unusable state.
There should be another application in the same folder named "Uninstall Genieo". After updating Genieo, if necessary, launch "Uninstall Genieo" and follow the prompts to remove the "newspaper-style home page." Restart the computer.
This step does not completely inactivate Genieo.
Step 2
Don't take this step unless you completed Step 1, including the restart, without any error messages. If you couldn't complete Step 1, stop here and ask for instructions.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
/Library/Frameworks/GenieoExtra.framework
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.
If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder should open with an item named "GenieoExtra.framework" selected. Move that item to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password.
Move each of these items to the Trash in the same way:
/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.update.plist
/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.engine.plist
/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client.plist
/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client/u/usr/lib/libgenkit.dylib/usr/lib/libgenkitsa.dylib
/usr/lib/libimckit.dylib
/usr/lib/libimckitsa.dylib~/Library/Application Support/com.genieoinnovation.Installer~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.download.plist
~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.update.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those listed above, move them as well. There's no need to restart after each one. Some of these items will be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
Restart and empty the Trash. Don't try to empty the Trash until you have restarted.
Step 3
From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including ones called "Genieo" or "Omnibar," and any that have the word "Spigot" or "InstallMac" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Your web browser(s) should now be working, and you should be able to reset the home page and search engine. If not, stop here and post your results.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install this software. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad has a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If youever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Genieo developer has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. It must be said that this failure of oversight is inexcusable and has seriously compromised the value of Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You cannot rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
Finally, be forewarned that when Genieo is mentioned on this site, the developer sometimes shows up under the name "Genieo support." If that happens, don't believe anything he says, but feel free to tell him what you think of his scam.
