Uninstalling "locked" windows media for mac

i recently installed microsoft's windows media player for mac, and i should have known better. my computer is acting strange, getting stuck. i tried to put it all in the trash, but it says i can't because half a million files are locked. i have tried to get info on these files to unlock them, but can't find them, and the ones i do find are unlocked. obviously i am not terribly great with the computer, and i really want to get this microsoft junk off my computer. anybody know how with step by step instructions' page i can go to? thanks much

Welcome to the discussions!
How exactly did you install Windows Media Player for Mac? Or, you mean Flip4Mac? If you installed the first, it should be in your Applications folder. You can trash it, run Spotlight, find all relevant files and delete them from there. You can also find the application shortcut, Ctrl-click and from the dropdown menu, choose "Get Info". In the pane that will arise, look for permissions, make sure it's "read and write"-just to verify you haven't inadvertedly change privileges. ( Same goes for all applications, it's not specific to something ).
But, are you sure about the cause of your trouble? Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > Repair permissions as a first step and make sure your Software is updated from System Preferences > Software Update. Also ( if you have Flip4Mac ), look up it's window pane at System Preferences and look if this also needs updating.

  • RE: Using Windows Media for Mac

Please Help!! I have downloaded music to my Mac from Sprint.com. The music files are .wma! I did download Windows Media for Mac so that I can play my although when I attempt to play the music the message on Windows Media is that the path and name of file are wrong and therefore it does not play the music at all. Any suggestions.

You should use flip4mac it has replaced the windows media player for mac. I would also suggest Perian as it adds to QTimes abilities.

  • Using Windows Media for Mac OS X

When I try to download and open Windows Media for the Mac OS X, I get the message "There is no default application specified to open the document "Windows Media.stix" with a tab marked 'choose application' under that.
Naturally, I know what to do, or what application to choose....not. What application am I supposed o choose to open the download and how am I supposed to know that?
    thank you!

Thanks for the message and info.
Before I install Flip4Mac, I should probably uninstall the Windows Media Player for OS X first, correct? In my application folder, I have an icon marked "uninstallflash_playerosx.dmg". (I also have "installflash_player_9_ubbeta.dmg" in the applications folder as well.) Are these connected to the Windows Media installer, or are they something else? I don't know what they are or what they do.
Something is also definitely wrong with my chat functions--which relates to flash player, I think? In downloading interactive software or chat room functions from websites, I get the image of the recycled coffee cup---but that's it. Nothing starts, nothing works. I have 'enable java' 'enable javascript' and 'enable plug-ins' all checked under preferences in Safari.I have both java 1.4.2 and java 1.3.1 settings (with 1.4.2 as the default I guess, but am not positive).
Are the Windows Media and flash and chat functions related? Is there something else I should be doing to activate chat or interactive functions?
    Thanks again!

Welcome to Discussions - it's not clear which model of iMac you have, intel or G5. In any case, are you sure it's the Mac version of WMP? You need to use the free application Stuffit Expander, which should open most things.

  • Windows office for mac

    Hi
I am considering buying MacBook Air and want to install windows office for mac.
Do I have to buy an external cd drive to do this ?
    Thanks

When you say, "windows office for mac", its a contradicion in terms that makes a clear answer a litle more complicated. Either you are wanting to buy Microsoft office for Windows, or Microsoft Office for Mac.
For the Mac, you would use "Microsoft Office for Mac", unless you intend to install Windows on that Mac, and run it using Bootcamp or a virtual machine product like Parallels or Fusion.
To your question of installing the software. Yes, you can buy an external DVD drive, but it is not necessary. Here are your other options.
    1. Use Remote Disc, the means by which a Mac can use the DVD drive of another computer attached over a network.
    2. Using another computer, copy the DVD disc that comes with the software to a USB flash drive, and then use the flash drive to install MS Office for Mac.
    3. Download the "trial" version of MS Office for Mac, from the MS Office for mac website (instructions are usually included with your disc). Then use the activtion code that came(comes) with your install disc to activate the trial to be the full installed version. You see the "trial" is no different than the "full version", except the license is simply not activated for unrestricted use.

how to uninstall norton anti virus for mac

A little late to the game, but .sit files are Stuffit files as developed by http://www.stuffit.com/ Apple used to use this compression format, but does no longer, and no longer includes the free Stuffit Expander program made by Stuffit.com. If you need to extract an old .sit uninstaller, get it from Stuffit.com. And also any company making such a program for Mac OS X should seriously consider upgrading their downloads to be .dmg.zip files instead, which are more easy to extract on Mac OS X without downloading extra software.

  • Lumia 920 does not sync with Windows Phone for Mac

I cannot sync any item between my Lumia 920 and with Mac.
Many users indicated that the problem encountered when syncing the Lumia 920 with Windows Phone for Mac is resolved by using the option "Allow access to folder" to the iTunes library. However, I have tried several times with many folders but cannot sync anything between my phone and my Mac.
I also modified the security options of my Mac by allowing the Windows Phone app to access my computer but with not success.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

  • Voice over and windows messenger for Mac help

    Hello,
I am using VoiceOver and would like to use Windows Messenger for Mac but I can't seem to get VoiceOver to read the contact list for messenger when I use the control-option-shift-down arrow to interact with the contents of the window it skips the contants list and goes straight to image behind it.
Is there a way to have VO read the contacts list in windows messenger or is it just not a compatiable program for VO?

Here is the wikipedia article on aMSN. The article also includes a link to the aMSN website. It is a multi-platform messenger application that interoperates with Microsoft Messenger.

  • Windows XP for mac

I purchased this very expensive Windows XP for mac program yet it runs slower than a turtle. I thought it would reslove my problem which is not being able to open certain files because the computer tells me it doesn't have an aplication to open this file. Is there anyone out there that has an answer for me. I am also trying to connect a wireless internet router for my new laptop but my mac won't read the software it came with. Please help me someone, anyone,I'm so frustrated!
      Mac OS X (10.0.x)

    I have a Linksys Wireless-G 2.4 GHz 54Mbps Broadband
    Router.
That would be this model, or a different one?
My computer keeps telling me it doesn't have
an aplication to open the software that came with
    this thing.
Do you have it running, in which case the lack of the ability to run any associated Windows software probably doesn't matter?
As far as I can tell, the setup wizard for this device is Windows only, but it is possible to configure it manually via a web browser, such as Safari. However, if you want the Apple Discussion Forum members to help you with this you will need to supply the Forum with quite a lot of information. Maybe someone who actually has one of these routers can assist better.
I get this message a lot especially when
I download, lets say, an article from the internet,
or a movie, or other items. 90% of the time I'm
unable to open the files. Am I missing aplications
that should be purchased separately? I apreciate any
input from the experts. Thank you.
Well, for a start, can you give some examples of the things that you can't open? Precise examples, preferably a URL to the thing in question. At the very least, tell us what the Windows extension (the .xxx at the end of a file name) is.
Also, I see that you say you have Mac OS X 10.0.x, and you don't specify whay sort of Macintosh you have in your profile. Do you really have that, very first, version of Mac OS X, or are you running something more modern. It would also be very helpful if you said what sort of Mac you have, since then we know what features, interfaces, etc it has.

  • Cannot extract Window driver for MAC

I have windows installed in my MacBookPro. The problem is I do not have Window driver for Mac. This is the reason why :-
I created a partition of Fat32 (that was my mistake). When I tried to load Windows using BootCamp - it did not work. It is asking me to go to Disk Utility anc conver the partition to Mac file system whcih I am unable to do that. To go round -
I have installed XP in the Fat32 partion without using Boot Camp. The problem is getting the Windows driver for Mac beucase I cannot use the Boot Camp.
Are there any way of getting Windows driver for Mac ?

You need a boot loader and that's what BootCamp establishes.

  • Change windows software for MAC or run with windows

    Hi
I have a new macbook pro and unopened versions of Photoshop elements 8 and Serif pageplus and Serif webplus. I am wondering if I should
1.buy windows 7 to run these applications (serif don't have a mac compatible version)
    2. Return the elements for a mac version
    3. Return all and swich to mac based software as I am about to start new business requiring website and publishing and that is what MAC is renonwed for. Am I missing a trick trying to use windows programmes for what MAC is specialised in? Would appreciate any help as fairly new to this

Websites: you probably will NEED to run Windows in a VM just to check out how it looks and that it works in Windows anyway.
And no one can really answer, though you are locked into Mac software that supports 10.6.
So run both. Run each off its own partition, and run Windows concurrently in a VM.

  • Software to play Windows Media on Mac?

I have tried downloading Flip4mac and other software to play windows Media streams and have not been able to get them to work. What other software is there?

Flip4Mac is the plug in of choice for me. Reply with any site address that you're having a problem with and I'll see what happens on my system.
I just posted the following reply to someone else about this issue:
There are some sites that have a weird, unsupported format for their WMV. On occasion I'll send an email to [email protected] and see if they can't get any particular site to work. Sometimes I'll see that happen in an update for F4M.
Also, anything protected with the digital rights media thing (DDR) is off limits..that's a given.
Anyway...it's mostly a PC world with video out there, and when it comes to WMV, F4M is our best tool, but now and again a content provider will box out the Mac population with some unique codec wrapped in a WMV shell...their bad.
