Uninstalling programs and related components

How do I uninstall programs and components from this machine. It was given to me with all the original owners stuff on it.

Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications. Here is a selection:
AppZapper
Automaton
Hazel
CleanApp
Yank
SuperPop
Uninstaller
Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

After following the instructions to completly uninstall iTunes and related components, I restarted computerand reinstalled iTunes, Then I received the error message that iTunes couldn't load because program file Apple Application Support (deleted as per instructions) wasn't present. What now?

With the Error 2, let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you?
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • Properly uninstalling programs and apps?

just wondering if uninstalling programs and apps rquire further delving into subfolders and drives...?

If by 'most' you don't include any Apple Apps (Final Cut, DVD SP, iWork, iPhoto, Garageband, Logic) or Adobe apps or Virtualbox or anything with an installer …
A lot of apps also save files to /Library/Application Support or worse subfolders of /Library. It's not really somewhere a novice should be looking for files to delete.
Arthur's probably right about AppZapper, so long as you don't use it as a tool to 'free up some space'.

  • How do I uninstall programs and files, so that the old computer is returned to its original settings?

Hi, I'm giving my aunt my old computer, I have already backed everything up on my new one. What's the best way to remove/uninstall programs and files so that its returned to its orignial settings?

    Prepare Your Mac for Sale
Boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer.  After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.  After DU loads select the startup volume from the left side list then click on the Erase tab.  Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Options button.  Select the one pass Zero Data option and click on the OK button.  Then click on the Erase button.
Note: You can skip the Zero Data option if you are not concerned about removing sensitive personal data from the hard drive.  If you choose to skip this part of the process then it is possible for others to recover data from the hard drive.  The Zero Data procedure will prevent others from getting access to your personal information.
This process will take 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the size of the hard drive.  After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Now complete the OS X installation.  At the completion of the installation do not restart the computer.  Instead just shut it off.  The next user will be presented with the Setup Assistant when they turn on the computer just as it would if new out of the box.

  • Bonjour help + clean uninstall and re-install of iTunes, Quicktime, and related components

    I am using Win7 x64.
To make a long story short, I unistalled Bonjour.  When the next update for iTunes came out (Ver. 10.4.1), I was unable to update due to the error message: "Service Bonjour (Bonjour Services) failed to start.  Please verify you have sufficient administrative permission and try again" or something along those lines.  After trying several things to no avail, I finally did a clean uninstall of iTunes, Quicktime, and all related components as per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923.  When I then tried to reinstall iTunes and Quicktime, I got the same error message.  I know people have had problems with Bonjour before, but I couldn't find any info on why I am getting this after a clean uninstall or what to do about it, so any ideas would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • Uninstall console and server components

    Hi again,
Previous posts didn't quite answer this question. I need to remove the server and console portions of SMC from a machine since I decided to use a different machine for these functions. The es-unist script only seems to tackle removing the agent and the add ons. At no point did it ask me if I wanted to remove the server or console segments? I'd prefer to avoid having to uninstall everything and re-install the agent. Is the only other recourse to manually remove the server and console packages?
    Many thanks,

It seems that if the server modules are found, than the setup command
assumes the local host will be the server. :-(1) Stop all SunMC processes:
    /opt/SUNWsymon/sbin/es-stop -A
    2) Edit this file and change the trap and event sections so that their hostname/IP's point to your new Server:
    /var/opt/SUNWsymon/cfg/domain-config.x
    3) Run this command to generate new keys for your Agent:
    /opt/SUNWsymon/sbin/es-run base-usm-seed.sh -s SEED -c agent
(replacing SEED with the seed value used with your new Server)
    4) Start just the Agent:
    /opt/SUNWsymon/sbin/es-start -a
    5) Login to your new Server, make an icon for the Agent you just started, then double-click into it and disable/enable a random module to make sure the security is correct.
    6) ...
    7) Profit!

  • Completely Uninstall FCP and all Components

so FCP takes up about 50gb of space on my HD.. I never use it, so I've decided to remove it... I've used appzapper, and I've used the FCS remover (http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcs_remover.htm) but it has only cleared up about 10gb of data.... 7 to be exact...
what can I do to clear it off.. all of it.. all the extra apps and stuff.. I cleared them all through appzapper and FCS remover.. but.. it hasnt cleared up the space

I have absolutely no idea what is taking up ~40 GBs of space. The applications themselves don't take up much, it's the content, but if none of those folders exist then you don't have any content on your system (unless it's in a different folder but you said you'd installed it to the default location).
P.S. If you find out what it is, let me know.

  • TS5376 For about 4 months now I have been getting an Apple I-Tunes update message but when I try to install it, the program stops and refuses to install it saying I need to go to tools and manually install. the support page says:1. Remove iTunes and relat

    Dear Windows support personel,
         As part of my message reads above; I keep getting an i-tunes update message and when I click on the OK to download it, I get an error message saying there was a problem and I need to go to Tools>manual download.  Well, I don't know how to do that even though I gave it my best try. I went to the support sight and it had the following message;
    1. Remove iTunes and related components from the Control Panel
Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order. Then, restart your computer:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
Important: Uninstalling these components in a different order, or  only uninstalling some of these components, may have unintended affects.
If you encounter an error while uninstalling, try repairing the affected component:
I don't know if I should do that since I'm not PC savey. Could you help me by doing the work on my pc for me? I'd be most apprieciative if you'd help me in this manner.
    Sincerely,
    Christine Bocker

  • Uninstall Mozilla Firefox Version 8.01 (X86en-US) after a crash when remove icon in install/uninstall programs will not remove program

Operating System is Windows XP Service Pack 3.
Wish to uninstall program and install later version of Mozilla Firefox - Firefox 10

First of all find and make a copy of your [[profiles|profile]] include all folders and sub files, and put it somewhere safe, the XP desktop is a suitable location. That allows you to restore settings and bookmarks etc after a re-install.
    *see [[backing up your information]]
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup
Firefox upgrades will normally install over the top of existing versions without any need to uninstall, but in your case it is probably worth deleting the program folder prior to installing as a clean install
    * see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Clean_reinstall
