Uninterruptible Power Supply for Desktop (UK)

I am used to the convinience of a MacBook, which cares littl for being tethered to the mains or not or whether the power cuts, but of course things are a little different for Desktops.
I live in the UK and would like to know if anybody has purchased a UPS for a sensible price, just for home use. I should imagine I only need to plug my Mac mini and screen in, the occasional external HDD too, but nothing much beyond that.
Maplin have poor ratings (and, it seems, no Mac support). I am not sure where to buy it from, idealy on the high street as the cost of shipping would be punnishing to the wallet.
Thanks.

The thing for me will not be that I am away, it will be that I am working and I lose everything because the power's gone. I am more looking for a solution that allows me to manually shut everything down, keeping the state in memmory, as OSs from Lion and beyond allow for.
I was wondering, as Desktops are generally left on, but in sleep mode, it will be that time that I need the shut down operation to take over, can that be configured for?
I tried the wizard on the website, but it advertised a slightly different model: the "APC Power-Saving Back-UPS Pro 900, 230V", however I couldn't feed it the exact data I wanted to, it didn't have all of the options, I'll have to ask them, but it's a fairly easy setup.
The model quoted me a 17minute run time, what of the model you quoted me, how much do you think (off of the top of your head) do you think I'd get with that. It would be a Mac Mini (two internal HDDs: one SSD, the other a traditional HHD, but I know not the RPM), 27@ cinema display and that's about it, possibly a tethered LaCie 2big 8TB external HDD, but it would happen right then wouldn't it.
Power London is prettey good, it would only be if someone was using the cooker and flicked the switch, or something like a street outage (which has happened, but I had a MacBook then).
Thanks.

  • Installing uninterruptible power supply for iMac

I'm trying to set up an APC RS 1500 Battery backup for my iMac(2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo), and the APC specs show a stepped sine wave as the on-battery wave shape; is this compatible with incoming line voltage the iMac needs?
    Thanks

It is my understanding that most affordable un-interruptible power supplies will be outputting a stepped sine wave when on battery. Considerable energy would be lost in a smoothing filtered output.
Therefore - I do think that you will not have any problem using the aforementioned UPS.

  • Uninterruptible power supply for mac mini server

can anyone recommend a good UPS for my mac mini server? i am a novice with these things so any advice appreciated: what i should look out for, will i need extra cables or can i just plug a uk plug directly into a ups, price v performance (there is a big range)
    thanks

I would recommend you go with a small Smart-UPS, something like the APC Smart-UPS 750VA LCD. The 750 is a line interactive unit, offers avr boost/drop, surge protection and outputs a sine wave. This unit will provide you data center quality protection.
The Mac Mini consumes about 110W of power, so with the SMT750 you'd have over 35 minutes of run time on the unit alone. If you have routers and switches, it would reduce the run time a bit, but you can protect more equipment.
I wouldn't recommend going with the Back-UPS series of UPSs. They're not really designed for sensitive equipment and don't offer nearly as much protection as much the Smart-UPSs. We can't use them here at all because they don't get along with most Mac power supplies because they don't output a sine wave. Overall, they're just not as good as the Smart-UPSs.
We use the North American version here, in Europe you'd be looking for a SMT750I, "I" being the international edition.
We use a variety of these UPSs here at our office, they work like a charm.

  • Multi-server UPS Uninterruptible Power Supply for 2 Xserves

What Multi-server UPS are you using?
I have 2 Xserves and one of the UPSs is dead. I want to replace it with a multi-server/computer UPS.
    Can anyone recommend one?
    Thanks

MGE UPS can protect multiple servers. With the "network card" option installed you can gracefully shutdown numerous servers including Macs and PCs on the same UPS. The documentation is OK but it is a direct translation from French and can be difficult at times. The products work well and we have a few of our clients successfully using these UPS. The application is based on a web server/client. The server is embedded in the network card and the client is installed on each of the servers connected to the UPS. Extra batteries can be added to increase uptime.

  • Graphical application for an APC uninterruptible power supply (UPS)?

    Hi,
I have a APC UPS (uninterruptible power supply) and I'm looking for an application that shows me more than just some percentages of the capacity of the battery. I know that and some settings can be done by the energy saving settings.
But the Parachute application for windows, shows you the present load of the UPS so you can see if it is possible to power additional devices with it.
It also shows you some more in detail information.
So I was thinking of a tool like "APC Tracker" from Equinux.com, but 112$ is more than I paid for the UPS! So that is a no go. And now I was wondering if some of you might know an alternative?
I know that there is a packet called NUT for MacPorts and also APCUSPd. But from what I've read. Both will interfere with Apples Energy Saving settings.

Agreed, but I don't see how to do that in conjunction with the automatic shutdown capability of the UPS. I doubt the current OS is capable of responding to a usb signal by waking up then shutting down. It seems unlikely that apple or the UPS vendors would anticipate that someone would want this feature.
On the contrary, that's exactly what people want, and Apple and at least some of the vendors do just that.
The U.P.S. doesn't actually do the shutdown, of course, OSX does, and you're talking about two different things anyway.
A good U.P.S. sends more than one signal. It sends frequent updates of the power level of the batteries, and notifies OSX when it's on battery power.
OSX wakes a sleeping Mac up immediately when the utility power fails, so it can send a message.
The automatic shut down is scheduled, via System Preferences, by your choice of time on battery power, estimated time left on the battery, and/or remaining battery power level (percent).
APC's +Power Chute+ software, which I used with Panther, worked similarly, and I'd expect other decent 3rd-party U.P.S. software to have similar capabilities.

  • UPS (uninterruptible power supply) best suited to Mac Pro?

    Hello
May i get some advice please?
I need to buy an uninterruptible power supply because of the powercuts round here. I live in the UK
I'd like to use it on my Mac. I have a Mac Pro Quad Core Intel Xeon, 12 GB RAM, 4 HDDs, with two monitors and a 9 port USB hub which has the occasional attachment
I've been looking at APC's units but have come to a snag in finding out what kind of wattage I should look for in a UPS.
I have read that it can be variable, based on many factors.
So instead of being overwhelmed/confused etc I thought I'd just ask you guys
Anyone recommend me what I should be looking for in a UPS that'll serve this purpose, and any makes and models you have found to work very well?
If possible, nothing at 'enterprise level' in cost, i don't have that kind of budget.
    Thanks!

readers saying that the 'newer' models were not built as well, noisey fans, and APC filtering for coax + phone + rj45 caused interference. The SMART CyperPower does not interfere (losng that and having sporatic cable for a month).
I like cyberpower - some for personal reasons.
the new APC SMART 1000VA is nice. The APC XS does not filter properly and lacks features of the RS series (I have both).
So I still have some APC models, but before I was faced with a failure I wanted to try a different brand and got burned by Belkin's junk.
Come a storm, I use the APCs for the house and they have those auxillary 24A power packs you can plug in which will power a couple lamps for 8 hrs plus, or power Mac Pro for an add'l hour.

  • New Antec power supply for p7-1003w doesn't fit?!

I got a new power supply for my p7-1003w tower only to discover it would not fit. It was getting caught somehow so I looked and noticed it was not the supply itself but the black plastic bezel piece around the AC connection hole.
Has anyone else faced this? The original power supply doesn't have a bezel, but all the Antec supplys I see do.
If you've had this problem of the bezel beign too big what did you do bend your back plate? lol or is their a certian brand of supplys that don't have the big bezel around the connector hole.
    Thanks!

Where can I buy a replacement power supply for Optiplex 9020 Mini Tower?
I don't see anywhere on Dell's website to purchase this.

So far there is no replacement/upgrade PSU for Dell Optiplex 9020 MT from Dell.
Will a dedicated power supply work for playing games? i bought this system as used (excellent condition) just for Gaming Purpose (GTA V), now i am stuck with the PSU issue. I can alter the case to fit the big size GPUs, but the issue is of PSU.
Will ePower EP-450CD can help me in any way.
My main reason for changing PSU is to play my favorite game.

  • POWER SUPPLY FOR MY CANON

    Hi there everyone
I am looking forward to buy a power supply for my canon, do you know where I can find it or which one should I buy? Please recommend....thanks.

Hi bebefle_89! Every model of camera uses a different power supply, so we will need to know the exact model of your camera to be able to answer that question accurately, but for EOS cameras you can get them here for PowerShot cameras you can get them here.

Because the XP597A3 (actually any of these product numbers; XP597AA, XP597A3, XP597AS) is a HP 2011x 20" LCD/LED widescreen monitor. The OP was looking for an A/C adapter power supply for the HP 2711x 27" LCD/LED widescreen monitor, which is product # XP600AA or XP600A3. The adapter power supply I linked to, is the correct part for the 2711x monitor.... that is why not those other parts.

  • Power Supply for Airport Extreme

    Hi
Does anyone know where I can get a new power supply for my airport extreme in the UK? Mine has died, and I don't really want to buy a whole new base station just because of the external supply. (I know the actual unit is working through plugging in a power supply from my other base station)
I tried Apple, who weren't really any help.
    Thanks in advance!
    Tom.

    Tom welcome to the discussions.
I would probably call the Apple number.
    1-800-MY APPLE
I am sure that they can point you in the right direction.
I am a little shocked that one of the Apple Retail stores can't offer you a Power Supply.
If all else fails, it sounds like you have tried an alternitve, if it works use it, until you can get a replacment.

  • Replacement power supply for Airport N base station?

I'm in need of a replacement power supply for an Airport Extreme N base station.
Is this something I can pick up at a friendly neighborhood Radio Shack, or do I need to order the OEM part from Apple?
I don't need the automatic international voltage switching, just something that can power this puppy with US AC. Thanks.

According notebook specification AC power supply for your notebook has part number PA3290E-3AC3. I dont know where do you live but Googling around and using this part number as search term you will, I hope, find enough online stores where you can order new AC adapter.
