Universal book reading app

I read a lot and presently have three ebook apps. I need to jump between Amazon, Barnes and Noble and iBooks to select a book. I would like there to be one repository for all downloaded books so I can select what to read. Is there such an application?

Wouldn't we all. Unfortunately, as Tamara indicated, this is not likely to happen in the near future. Basically, there are two problems--a common book format and device DRM sharing between devices/readers. Amazon, of course, uses its own proprietary AZW format for most/all items available in its store while Apple, B&N, Sony, and a host of others support the ePUP format. PFD's appear to be about the only format common to both groups and it is supported differently by the two camps--where one side treats the content as images and the other as text with limited "reflow" capabilities. Even then, the content usually has to be exported for a limited target dimension range to achieve optimum quality. Even if this worked better, there is still the problem the DRM (assuming you are not limiting your reading exclusively to public domain, your own writings, and/or the use of "archived/back-up" of personally owned intellectual content for private use. Basically, purchased files are DRM'd for a specific device/reader or a limited number of "authorized" devices/readers associated with your purchase account from whichever source you chose to use. Until or unless these sellers begin to allow the "cross-registration" of such devices/readers, it is unlikely you will ever find a "universal" device/reader app.

  • Universal book reader ???

I buy e-books from Amazon and Apple.  I use the iBooks app on my iPad to read the books purchased from Apple, and I use the Kindle app to read the books purchased from Amazon.  Both work fine, but using either app first requires me to remember where I purchased the book from, then open the appropriate app to read it.
In the not too distant future, I hope someone can create a universal e-book reader.  Something that allows you to purchase e-books from any source, and to organize them into libraries (as the iBooks app does).  You would open the univeral reader, locate the book you want to read, click on it, then behind the scenes it would navigate thru the appropriate DRM's and e-book formats to display the book for reading.  Maybe someday Apple and Amazon could collaborate on this, but I know they each want to protect their own channel.  But hey, you can buy music from both Apple and Amazon and play it all on one player (your iPod), so why not one e-reader for books from either source?
I like Apple, but the Amazon store seems to have a much larger e-book offering and much better search capabilities to help you find what you are looking for.  A universal e-reader app might combine the best of both worlds.  If someone knows of a univeral e-book reader and I've somehow missed it, pls let me know!

No, it doesn't exist.  To tell Apple what you want, use their feedback channels:

  • Today I downloaded a book reader app then downloaded one free and one purchased book to listen to on my Ipod Nano. Initially Ok, then a mess, now missing. Any ideas?

After downloading the app was there, the books were there, but nothing would play, not even the music. I re-searched the computer for music and now there is no Books tab and no books. There are duplicate music files and they all play. What a mess! Anyone know what's up?

What book reader app? There are no apps for the iPod Nano...

  • Can anyone recommend e-book reader app for mac os10.8.5

    Hi
Im trying to find an app to use for e-books from public library and other free e-book resources. I am not ready to update to Mavericks which uses ibook app because I am waiting for some of the glitches ie printing, accessibility - dragon dicitate and all the  problems reported by the support community discussions.
Personally I am not happy with ios 7 changes and I am reluctant to upgrade mac notebook and desktop. So I am being very cautious to make mac os changes especially when my printer being older model may or may not work and reports of dragon dictate, ms office and all the programs that are costly to replace.
I have vision problems and he ability to read an e-book both on and off line on a large screen would open a world of possibilies. While I like audiobooks nothing replaces seeing the words on a page and reading them to myself !
So when recommending an app please let me know how well it can increase font size, differentiate colors, and bookmark pages.
The ease of scolling and pagination in an e-book is important with my handicap.
I am financially unable to invest in purchasing apps that are more then $5.00 nor am I am to buy an e-reader like an ipad or other brands.
I know I could use a pdf app but the page flow of a pdf file is not visually appealing. I also find it hard to find where I left off reading.
Thank you in advance for your help

Thanks very much. That fixed the problem.
    Best Regards

  • What is book reading app for Nokia 1520?

    Hi,
iOS have iBook, Good Reader. Android have Play Book, Mantano Reader.
What does Windows Phone 8 have in equivalent?
Functionality require are annotations for PDF, Epub and in App dictionary integrated.
Adobe Reader and MS Reader Viewer still need a bit of work to make it more reading friendly. PDF Page crops, highlight, underline adding note ...
Nokia Reading is not available for Lumina 1520 at this stage.
A bit disappointed when I got my First Windows Phone 8 Nokia 1520, I lose most of my app from Android and iOS.

  • What is the best book reader for BlackBerry classic?

Is there a good book reader/app for BlackBerry classic? Hopefully one that has a good selection of books available too

i have searched there, but rather than try 20 out, i'd rather see what people like here.
the people on discussion boards generally have good taste.
and by best, i mean the best -- your favorite. obviously that encompasses a range of qualities to embody "the best."

  • Does anyone know of an e-reader app for the iphone that has text to speech capability? I have a Kindle 3G that can read whole pdf documents and books but I cannot figure out how to do it on my iphone 4.

Does anyone know of an e-reader app for the iphone that has text to speech capability? I have a Kindle 3G that can read whole pdf documents and books but I cannot figure out how to do it on my iphone 4.
All of the apps I have found on the App store either do not have the text to speech capability or if they have it they will only read a page at a time or simply read the text you paste into their window. I really do not understand what is so difficult about having this feature as Kindle provides it--though Amazon does not make the feature available on its iPhone 4 app.
    Please help.

thanks. yes i am aware of the VoiceOver feature but it is NOT the solution to my problem. as you said, it is a solution to a different set of issues. i want the text to speech ability because i there are books i need to read but do not have the time to sit down and read them and have become used to listening to them read to me either by a professional human reader or with the text to speech software on the Kindle.
I think Apple makes the best audio devices but i am really disappointed in this inexplainable shortcoming. if apple can give us siri they ought to be able to design a nice little button that i can push to turn on text to speech while i am in a document, book, magazine or webpage. clearly it is possible as apple has added the "reader" button in safari to have web pages dropped into the reader format.
thanks for your suggestion though, it is what everyone suggests but it does not address the issue.

    Looking for a reading App.
    iPad (iOS 7.1.2) - Kindle.
I am looking for a good app that can help a college student with reading books that cannot be found on audio book.  I have tried voice over and it works but it's very monotone and it really strings things together.
    - I'm willing to pay for a good app but I can't seem to sort though the many that are out there. Any suggestions.

Ah. I'm surprised, but there we go.
    Have a look here ...

Didn't have time to do more than skim, but 'Ardour' looked promising. Protools is the only one I've used, the full product is one of the industry standards, but the free 'lite' version listed here seems to be limited to 2 in/out as well.
Referring to your original post, I'd think trying to write or 'script' something would be a nightmare ... synchronisation of streams within something like Applescript would be a major issue, quite apart from anything else.

  • When reading my book on iBooks, I encounter duplicate pages for many pages then it skips the pages that should be there so I am missing large parts to chapters, is this a "bug" in the book or app? How can this be fixed?

Does the same thing happen on any other books that you have in the app ? If not then it's probably just that one book, in which can you could try deleting the book and re-downloading it - if it re-downloads in the same state then try the 'report a problem' from your purchase history :http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1933

  • Can the iPad Mini restriction settings control downloading books on the Kindle Reader App?

I have a lot of books on my Kindle Account, and I'm about to give my kids iPad Minis.  I want to put the Kindle Reading App on their devices, as I have a bunch of books that they love on my account, but I also have lots of books that I don't want them reading, just yet.  Can the restrictions settings on the Mini create passcode access if they want to download a book on their own?

The restrictions that you use in the settings are only for content from the App Store, iTunes and the iBooks Store. As far as I know, there is no way to restrict access to the Kindle books in the settings. I have the Kindle app myself, but I don't know if there is a way to do what you want to do in the app itself or in your Amazon.com account.

  • I lost a book that was purchased in my ASA Reader app

I am using an App called ASA Reader from the App Store. I also have my settings set to back up this app to iCloud. I had only one book purchased in this reader App and assumed it was stored in iCloud. This week I installed the new iOS7 and had a problem;  but before attempting the install I made sure I ran my iCloud backup. The problem I had required me to erase my IPAD completely. I ran through the procedure to erase the IPAD and then launch iOS7 again - it all  went smoothly without a hitch. I then restored everything that was on my iCloud. It turns out that all my programs and content for the programs restored correctly - EXCEPT, this one book in my ASA Reader. Any idea what happened?  It looks like I have  lost that book

You would probably have to contact the ASA Reader app developer to ask them how they store their data in iCloud, and whether or not it is app data that is stored in the backup or just synced with your iCloud account.  If it's stored as app data in the backup, you may need to restore your iCloud backup to recover it.

  • TS1702 I just purchased a book on app store and can't seem to read it in iBooks, and keeps on coming up with "Failed to load book because the requested resource is missing" what do I do?

I just purchased a book on app store and can't seem to read it in iBooks, and keeps on coming up with "Failed to load book because the requested resource is missing" what do I do?

Quit the iBooks app completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logou appears and let go of the button.
Or try deleting the book and download it again. You can download it again for free as long as you use the same Apple ID.
If that doesn't work either, sometimes deleting the iBooks app and reinstalling it may work. But art with the first two suggestions.
