Universal Crossgrade's Been Despatched - any tips before I install?

Probably a Thrashed-to-Death topic - but new things crop up . . .
Any problems or pitfalls with the Crossgrade before I dive in?
Can't wait!
I love installing stuff on a Mac - it was always a nightmare on a PC but those days are long gone since I changed to Mac, thank goodness!

Well, the padded envelope with four DVDs in crumpled white packets arrived yesterday - with a sheet of "instructions" which said something about using the Apple Loops disk I already had . . . But I'd sent all the disks back to Apple!
Anyway, I started the upgrade and the first new disk it asked for was (you guessed it) Apple Loops.
There's no facility to skip, so we went back to the beginning and started the upgrade again.
This time I was ready!
I de-selected Apple Loops in the Custom Setup section, and off we went again.
Guess what? After doing the FCP Installation disk bit, it asked me for Live Type Disk! . . . No LT disk was available - I'd sent it back to Apple.
Obviously, the guys at Apple have a great sense of humour - but unfortunately, I was the butt of this particular joke, it seems.
OK - we started from the beginning again - but this time I was more careful. I decided to check every item on the Custom Install panel.
To my horror, I noticed there were no bytes associated with Final Cut Pro . . .
Well, there's a thing! I sent the FCP disk back with the rest - so now I only have my system backup to rely on if anything happens to Final Cut Pro.
. . . and Compressor too - no upgrade, and now no installation disk!
OK - I know I've read on the forum that people copy installation disks before they send them off - but I don't recall that being recommended on the FCS Crossgrade page when I paid for it.
I assumed Apple would replace the disks I sent. But I only received FCS, Motion, DVD SP and Soundtrack Pro.
I feel cheated and vulnerable now I have no FCP or Compressor disk (not to mention Live Type and Apple Loops) - and they didn't even return the nice little black box the disks came in originally, so I have to find something suitable to store them in together.
I've installed what I can - and done a full software upgrade.
I'll come back when I've used it for a while.
But I'm not amused . . .

I can not sync my iPhone after restoring it - my computer only gives me the restore (again and again and again) option.  I have no music and only a few aps now on my iPhone.  Any tips before I go to the genius bar?

If you restored as new, without using a backup, and still only get an option to restore, there is a hardware problem or the phone was previously hacked (jailbroken, downgraded iOS, unauthorized unlock).  Your only option is to take it to Apple or whoever provides iPhone service in your country.

  • Any tips before installing Leopard 10.5?

    Hi,
I recently purchased Mac OSX Leopard family pack to upgrade my iMac G5 which currently has Panther 10.3.9, and then to upgrade my Macbook Pro which has Tiger 10.4.11. Before I install the disc, is there anything that I should do or check that might facilitate the upgrade? For example, should I run disc utilities, disc repairs, etc.?
    Thanks,
    Art

    1. Check to be sure you have enough physical memory. I currently have 4Gbytes on my MBP. If not the Apple/Samsung factory memory is available from http://www.macsales.com/ and it is a lot less expensive.
    2. You might want to verify your disk before you install the new O/S.
    3. It might be time to upgrade to 250Gbytes on your disk if you plan to load it up with audio and video.
    4. Check to be sure you have upgraded your router firmware to the latest version. If its more than a year old you may want to consider buying a new router. iChat is a little finicky (b/c of NAT) about the router it uses for video conference. I bought a Time Capsule and ALL my video problems disappeared. Go figure. Mass market routers like Linksys can't keep pace with the new machines on the market.
    5. Install 10.5 via "Archive and install". You will be able to select this "Option" at the "Select destination" screen. This produces the cleanest and most reliable upgrade installation. Also, when you go to 10.5.2, download the Combo upgrade to your desktop and install it from there. This method offers the most reliable upgrade to 10.5.2.
    6. Check any third party applications to be sure they are compatible with Leopard.

  • MBPro i7 -- Any Tips Before I Trash Win 7 and Reinstall?

Latest MB Pro 17, Core i7, 8GB RAM. The Boot Camp/Win 7 Pro (retail package) 64-bit install seemed to work properly. The subsequent Boot Camp Drivers downloaded and installed properly. Win 7 activated normally. No software installed other than Boot Camp Drivers. Win 7 will run only a couple of minutes before crashing with a Black screen and memory dump.
Start from scratch I know about. Any other ideas? Should I have installed as 32-bit?
    TIA!

There was no reason an Intel MacBook / MacBook Pro couldn't use Windows 7.
Apple's drivers are always iffy. Your OEM Snow Leopard with new MBP will have to have newer / latest drivers.
You shouldn't take everything Apple says about Windows and support as gospel, try taking with a grain of salt.
I'm sure the i7 is much faster and nicer, but not required. And Pro is only required for dual cpu sockets, and use to be needed to run XP Mode (that was dropped recently by Microsoft).
I don't see that you needed W7 Pro or a new MBP.
Apple does have trouble with two things: booting Windows 64-bit DVDs on some Macs; addressing more than 2GB on earlier Intel Macs that had 32-bit EFI (instead of Unified EFI 2.x which is 64-bit).
64-bit Windows has better threading, multicore support, memory handling. And can be more secure. Strongly recommend for anyone with 4GB. Doubt you would see or notice your apps running better or different. And having to use 64-bit drivers should not be an issue (isn't on my three systems).
Windows Home Premium would have done the trick probably. And there are methods to install 64-bit even on old MacBooks, though probably due for an upgrade anyway!

  • Seeking Tips BEFORE i install neo2...

This is my first build and i am asking you all to post tips or advice for a problem-free install. I have already seen the builders sticky, but wanted more. These can pertain to specifically the Neo2, or mobos in general. I already took care of a major component: I bough the Enermax 460W PSU with 33A on the 12v rail. Here are some tips i have come by, any like this will be welcome for all i hope!
-If using a whinchester core and the bios isn't the latest, using one stick of RAM will allow the system to boot untill the update
-Make sure the floppy cable is the right side up
-I believe i read that a WD IDE drive does not work as a master if it is the only hard drive. Could be the case for other HDs as well.
Stuff like this that will make the install as fast and problem free as possible.
    Thanks
    -Chris

    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
    5. Release Home button.

    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note:
    1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
    2. If you did not do step 4 properly, start all over again.

You move it back to the Applications folder or reinstall it from your OS install disk, using Pacifist if needed.

Go back to that article, ignore the instructions for updating it wirelessly, scroll down, and follow those for updating it from iTunes on a computer.

I have a Macbook Pro 15" that is three and a half years old.  Although it has slowed a bit, it still runs well and runs every program I need. Any tips for how to keep this old computer running well and in good health?
I have a 250 gig drive and try to keep at least 100 gigs unused at all times, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory, back up with Time Machine and CrashPlan, and have OS X 10.7.3.
This was my first Mac since an old Apple II GS.  After that I used PC's and got really good at reformatting, replacing drives, reinstalling, defragging, resolving software conflicts, etc.  Since switching back to Macs (five in my extended family now), I haven't had to do any of those things. So, although, the cost is three times as much, the aggrevation has been ten times less.
I'm retired and living on a fixed income and would therefore like to keep this computer running as opposed to constatntly upgrading.
    That said, any tips?
    Thanks
It does have a crack on the left of the screen case about 3/4'' up from the bottom.  I've posted that as another question.

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior.  Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Adding more RAM, if feasible, and a new, faster hard drive may also help pep it up a little.

  • What is the Final Cut Studio Universal Crossgrade?

I got an e-mail with an offer to purchase a "Universal Crossgrade" to Final Cut Studio for $49, but I'm not clear about what this is.
I already own FC Studio. Does "Universal" mean that all of the components are now in a single app so there's no more "round tripping" between apps?
Does "Universal" refer to the fact that this is compatible with both Power Mac and Intel based machines?
I'm confused about about what's new in this latest version.
    G5 dual 2.5   Mac OS X (10.3.5)
    G5 dual 2.5   Mac OS X (10.3.5)

    Mike,
The order form (http://images.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/pdf/Crossgrade.pdf) makes it look like you have to send in all 4 DVDs (Final Cut Studio, Motion 2, DVD Studio Pro and Soundtrack Pro).
This is the part that makes me a little squeamish. I haven't had any problems that require a re-install lately, but IF I DO before my new disks get here, I'm stuck. Also, what happens if I get the new version and there's a bug or something else about it that I don't like? Once again, I'm stuck.
    Maybe I'm just being paranoid.

  • Any tips for 'challenging!' multi-cam edit?

Hi all, I might have set myself a bit of a task here but here goes...
I had an opportunity to film my daughters school play over the course of two shows (different nights). On the first night I shot the performance from the back of the auditorium and basically left the cam running for the whole 60 odd minutes then changed tapes for the second half.
On the second night I captured from near the front for close ups and again left the tape running.
With regards to sound I propose to use the recording from the second night (close to stage) as this gave the best balance between children's voices and the sound coming from the CD/Piano.
The challenge now is to edit! All I want to do is run with the whole tape from the 2nd night and cut to long shots when I need to see the whole stage - lip sync won't be so much of a problem in this case! I still need slight adjustments though.
So, any tips out there? Areas I am scratching my head over at the moment include:-
    1. The whole sync thing - how can you do this scene by scene (as it was different nights)
    2. Capture. Is it easier to simply capture the whole thing then go in with the razor balde tool and cut scenes or would it be better to use log and capture scene by scene?
    3. Invest in a 2nd cam, talk the wife in to filming as well and sync them at the start!
    4. Sure there will be other areas I will face in the nights ahead but what should I also consider?
While the end product will be a few fund raising (for the drama club) DVD's - and as such I can get away with lots - I would like it to be as slick as possible so any suggestions would be gratefully received.
Something I have learned already is to buy a better tripod - cheap non-fluid ones are rubbish. Invest in decent mics (I use a Sony HDR-HC1 with an external Sony mic) and to get there hours before it starts to bag the front row! How do these people reserve seats half a day in advance? One last thing - why oh why do camcorder manufacturers put that annoying stop start beep on their cams? I have got so many of these recorded on the soundtrack (from other users) it is driving me crazy!
Anyway, back to the FCP 5.1 editing....
    Thanks in advance all,
    Michael

    Jim, Brian, Studio X,
Many thanks for the replies - they are much appreciated and I will be working through them in detail!
Have to admit it did not even cross my mind that there might be copyright issues with a kids play. The aim was to simply let the parents have a copy in return for a very small donation to the drama club. Oh well, perhaps the DVD will be free but strongly encouraged to make an, unconnected, $15 donation!
Interesting to see 2 different takes on the editing, just what I wanted though so I can try different options so thanks again.
Studio X - really interested in the Soundtrack Pro options to clean audio - I will take a look at this. I have also been wondering about investing in a better external mic. Even so far as to go to the Sony HDR-A1 for the XLR inputs. Any thoughts as to which mic you would go for if you had either a single 3.5mm input to play with or, if I go the XLR route, which mic would suit the A1?
Thanks again everyone - fantastic advice.
    Michael
