Universal Dock as IR for older PowerBook

Hello all,
I know this has been discussed in the past, but does anybody know if it is possible to use the Universal dock as an IR for a Powerbook?

This is not possible. The USB cable only carries power & connection to the computer. It does not carry the IR sensor signal.

  • IPdo Universal Dock /// Not made for home stereo use

Wow, after talking to “Dawn” at Apple technical support I was advised against using the iPod Universal Dock to connect to my home stereo. Apparently it was made for convenience rather than sonics. Funny but the older model (without the remote and s-video jacks) sounds great when connected to the stereo verses using the iPod’s headphone jack.
Looks like I’ll be returning the Dock and Remote….
Here’s my original email to the iPod store:
    Gentlemen,
At the advice of a friend I recently purchased the iPod Universal Dock (w remote)to connect to my stereo. This was based on his claim (which I verified) that the dock sounded substantially better than the headphone out jack (using the Monster Cable interconnect). Unfortunately the new Universal dock (w/ s-video & remote capabilities) sounds worse than the iPod’s headphone jack. We did a lot of comparisons using the older generation doc and have identified that it’s my new dock that sounds like garbage.
Is my Dock faultily or was the old one sonically better? Either way I would like to return my doc for either an exchange (if you believe my dock to be faulty) or a refund.
    Thanks

I recently purchased a universal 5 in 1 docking station that is suppose to charge my nano and also play through my stereo also but when I hooked it up to my stereo I can't get it to play. Wondering what I could be doing wrong, does the stereo have to be on a certain station? Any suggestions I might could try. There was not much instruction that came with it just a diagram but looks like I followed the diagram?!

  • 802.11 g (or n) for older powerbooks

I have a Ti powerbook with an airport card. Obviously the newer airport cards will not fit. Is there a third party manufacterer that makes an 'Airport' card for these older powerbooks that offer g or n speeds? I know I can get a PCMCIA card, but then they are not as convenient, and you have to make sure drivers are available.

This link from iFelix's site gives you your options for upgrading to g from b compliant wireless cards.
n Wireless adapters that are compatible with Mac have not been released yet, or at least I haven't seen any yet.

  • Video iPod Friendly (PCMCIA) CardBus USB 2.0 for older PowerBooks ?

Anyone know of one that works with the new iPods ?

I had the same problem and can verify that the Adaptec USB2connect PCMCIA card (AUA-142OA) works like a charm. It provides two USB 2.0 outlets, which allows for both the 5G iPod and also new EyeTV hardware to work. This allows me to put TiVo'd shows on my iPod with relative ease.
DO NOT USE the Adaptec card with the two USB ports, the firewire port and the other tiny Sony firewire port. Even sticking it in your PCMCIA slot will cause the computer to COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN. In other words, DON'T use this one:
    http://www.compusa.com/products/productinfo.asp?productcode=314360
    DO use this one:
    http://www.compusa.com/products/productinfo.asp?productcode=314362
I have an older version of the Adaptec USB 2.0 card that I used with a graphics tablet, and it worked great too. Frankly, I was stunned that my Powerbook had only USB 1.1 slots, but whatchya gonna do.
I was tempted to try the COMPUSA brand USB 2.0 card reader, as I think it was only $19.95. Perhaps someone out there might like to experiment - if it works, that's insanely much cheaper.

  • Recommended wireless routers for older powerbook

    Hello
I would like to purchase a wireless router to use with an older 12" 1.33mhz sys 10.3.9 powerbook. My range requirements are only for a small apartment. Many of the routers I see at FS for example do not specify Mac compatible. I see a Belkin G at Walmart ( F5D7230Ott4) that does indicate Mac Os 9x and 10x, and a Belkin N also that requires OS 10.4 for set up. Will the Belkin G be a reliable model for me? I read that some routers can be configured through a web browser - is this complicated ? Would that Belkin N be configurable through a browser without having to upgrade to Mac Os 10.4? I was also looking at a D-Link N DIR615 which was on sale but did not specify Mac.
Thanks for any advice on this.
    Dave

Will the Belkin G be a reliable model for me?
That and probably any other inexpensive wireless router. Routers deal in standards (Ethernet, 802.11b/g, etc.) therefore they work with any device regardless off which OS they are running.
I read that some routers can be configured through a web browser - is this complicated ?
Yes that is true and no it isn't complicated. Nearly all wireless routers (except Apple's) offer this ability.
Would that Belkin N be configurable through a browser without having to upgrade to Mac Os 10.4?
    Yes

  • Need webcam advice for older Powerbook

    Hello!
I've had my G4 aluminum Powerbook for about 5 or 6 years, and it is a wonderful machine. I recently upgraded to Tiger. I connect to the Internet wirelessly through Airport and a router connected to my husband's desktop G4.
I am having a bit of trouble figuring out how to accomplish one thing: I'd like to set up a webcam at home on my machine to watch my dogs while I'm at work (on a PC). I understand the iSight is no longer available, and Apple tells me it has a lovely Logitech Quickcam Ultra Vision that will allow me to chat with video. But I don't think chat will work work: I want a streaming video to come from my webcam that I can access through the Internet at work.
First, is this possible, given my set-up. And second, would the Logitech work and with what software?
Many thanks for your wise advice.

Here are two fantastic resources for you.
    1) Macam, which has a list of ALL compatible webcams with Mac OS X, via USB
    [http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/cameras/index.php]
    2) iChatUSB, which is a software/plug-in that also lets you use certain webcams
    [http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/configs.html]
    There's also this one:

The best one I've tried out so far, but returned because I didn't really need it after all (it was for a short-term project at work, and then after the project was shelved, I returned the webcam to the, er, shelves. Ha ha) is the Logitech QuickCam for Notebooks Pro.
It has built-in support and you don't need third party extensions. The clarity is great! Crystal clear images, both video and stills. It has a Carl Zeiss lens, if I remember correctly. And it works right out of the box.
Just be careful to get the right model number. There is a note of this on those first two sites above. A note about an earlier version (part no.) but same box could mean the difference between it working and not working. Something about UVC compliance.

  • S-Video with Universal Dock

    Hi,
I plan to order the 5G iPod and Universal Dock tonight. I will want to be able to play photo slideshows (both photos and sound), and videos, through my TV. To do this, I plan to place the iPod in the Universal Dock, then connect the Dock to the TV by a S-Video cable. As I have read that this method gives a clearer/better signal compared to using the Apple iPod AV cable.
Is this all I will need? Will both video and audio work/transmit to the TV via the S-Video cable? I'm assuming I won't need my laptop there either, as from what I understand, that set-up would be completely stand-alone...?
If a S-Video cable is all I need, can anyone recommend any manufacturers? I can not find an Apple S-Video cable on their online Store. There is a Belkin one though.
Could I get away with buying a bog standard S-Video cable from a local store, for say a few pounds?
    Thanks in advance.

Oh, drat! So you can either use just the iPod AV cable, which transmits both video and audio, from the iPod's headphone port to the TV, or...
... you can use the AV cable and an S-Video cable (in which case you also need the Dock with you)? With this second option, does the S-Video connection override the AV's capabilties to transmit video - so the AV cable is purely being used to transmit the audio??
Sorry to sound dumb, I have no experience with connecting an iPod to a TV.
Basically, what I want to know, is what I require to connect my 5G iPod up to my TV, to view photo slideshows and videos (both video and audio) - in the best/highest quality format possible. As I said above, I will be purchasing a Universal Dock.
Thanks for your help and quick reply.

  • Universal dock concern

I was lucky enough to find a factory sealed 1st gen iphone (16gb) on ebay earlier this week and I grabbed it before anyone else did. I was a previous owner of the same phone earlier this year before I sold it. Anyways while I was waiting to receive my new iPhone (1st gen) I picked up some Apple accessories for the phone, one being the universal dock adapter. When trying to place the phone in the universal adapter I have noticed the connectors don't fit as easily as they do with the standard dock that comes with the phone. With the standard dock it almost falls right into the connector, where with the universal adapater, you actually have to push it to get to go into the connector. Please don't get this confused with adapaters to use with the universal dock, I'm merely speaking about the universal dock itself (it's connector) and the phones connector (the two of them connecting into one another.
Has anyone else experienced this and is this normal? I noticed on that unverisal adapter there are 2 small tan colored plastic pieces that stick up (1 on each side of the connector) where as on the standard dock there is not. Is this what is causing you to have to 'push' the phone into the connector? And if so, why would they put these two pieces on the universal dock but not the standard dock? This is the only thing I can see that could be causing this problem.
Also the first time I put the phone into the universal dock, I got a message displaying on my phone that the phone was not compatible with the universal dock. Yet it's the only universal dock Apple makes for the ipods/iphones and it clearly stated on the ordering page that the universal dock would fit ANY ipod/iPhone that has a dock connector.
So any info? I just want to make sure I'm not going to break my phones connector and wanted to get some feedback on this.
    Thanks.
P.S. I've been trying to open up the battery door on the remote (that comes with the universal dock) but I can't get it to open for the life of me. I've followed the directions in the users guide that came with it but it doesn't seem to be doing what it should be doing (as described in the manual). It's pictured where you push a button on the door cover and it should open up, it does not open and I can't get it to open. Any ideas?

  • Can you view the iPod menus on your television with the Universal Dock?

I recently bought a decent universal dock knock off for my iPod, but one of my biggest gripes is that I am not able to view my iPod menus screen on my television. Does the Apple Universal Dock give you this ability?

    Hello there,
No, there is no such feature with the universal dock. If you wish to a have a dock with this kind of functionality, maybe check out this one below.

  • IPhone doesn't work with Universal Dock remote?

    Hello,
I received an Apple Universal Dock with remote for Christmas, and I'm pretty sure I remember it and the remote working just fine with my iPhone when I first set it up. Today, I tried using it again, and found that I can't use the Universal Dock's remote for anything other than controlling the volume, and even though I can raise or lower the volume with the remote, the volume change is not reflected on my iPhone's screen - the iPhone's ipod volume indicator doesn't move.
The Universal Dock and remote work just fine with my wife's second generation nano, and the iPhone works without any problems when docked into a Logitech mm50 speaker system - the mm50's remote is able to jump forward and backwards through songs, pause, play, etc. The problem seems limited to the combination of my iPhone and the Universal Dock and remote.
Is this normal? According to the Universal Dock's package and documentation, it is compatible with the iPhone and doesn't mention anything about the remote having limited capabilities when used with the iPhone.
If this isn't normal, does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?
thanks in advance and best regards,
    tom

i just bought this dock as a car dock. I have it hooked up to power 12v and output to 1/8 into head unit. Now, I have to be in iTunes music to get it to work and it only allows volume, playing of files in a playlist and to next song. Are any of you guys having issues with VERY limited use of the remote and lack of really a benefit from using a remote because you have to touch it anyways to change through songs or video??? Are you guys wondering why you even bought it if the remote is not supported as a functional addition?

  • IPod 3rd gen not working with universal dock

My old iPod 3rd gen (15GB, touch wheel, dock connector) worked great with the old dock, until the latter started scratching noises when outputting audio to my stereo. Still charges the iPod though.
So, I tried old iPod with the universal dock I got for my Touch and found the following problems:
    1. iPod is not being charged through new dock plugged to wall adapter
    2. touch wheel menu control is not working as long as iPod sits in universal dock plugged to the wall adapter - the sound of clicks is all I get, but no control of menu or any other function. In order to select playlist or use any other function through touch wheel or any of 4 buttons I need to unplug power from the dock (it is not charging anyway)
    3. remote is not working at all
    Otherwise playback is OK.
Any ideas what may be the culprit here? Apple states that Universal dock is compatible with 3rd generation of iPod and up.

    Hello Andrew,
What a coincidence as I too have had to find a new dock for my 3rd gen ipod. This week I purchased an Apple AV Connection kit - but found that it would not charge the ipod or respond to the remote. I also bought and tried a Belkin AC adapter with cable to power up the ipod but it too would not charge the ipod.
To see if these units were working I connected them to a friend's brand new ipod classic and both the Belkin and Apple AV Connection Kit worked fine - so there is something different about the 3rd gen ipod.
I'm not sure if this helps you - but at least you know it's not just your ipod that is not working with the new dock.

  • What is included in the "iPod Universal Dock Adapter 3-Pack for iPod touch (4th generation)"?

What's in the box? Is it a small dock you can rest and charge your iPod on, or is it simply an adapter for the £50 Apple Universal Dock?
    Please reply I'm really confused!

It's only a few adapaters so your iPod can sit and rest properly on Apple's Universal dock.

  • Does Av digital adapter works with the universal dock for remote control?

if I only connect the Lightning to 30 pin adapter to the universal dock for remote control it works so good with music, spotify, Netflix, YouTube etc.
but if I add the av digital lightning adapter to watch on Tv, the dock and remote control don't work anymore    what can I do? I want to watch stuff on tv and use the IR dock for remote control please help me what's going wrong?

    Thanks for your advice.
I recently purchased a universal dock for my iphone 3g. It works great. I just had one question. When my iphone is sitting on it for lets say 20 - 30 minutes. Then if i press the buttons on the remote. nothing happens! If I then press the home button while it is on the cradle then, the remote, it plays music. There after lets say if I stop stop the music through the remote and again press the remote button after a few minutes it starts playing. So what happens after a long time. Why do i have to press the home button on the iphone for the remote to work. Is that how it is supposed to work???
    Thanks

  • Which universal dock adapter for iPod touch 4th generation?

When you go into the Apple store / cables and docks, you eventually find one labelled 'Universal Dock Adapter 3-Pack for iPod touch'  but when you go into the support article 300277 'Learn about Apple Universal Dock' it says to use adapter number 20 which has serial number MC598ZM/A, but when you click on the link on the serial number you get the information for 'Apple iPhone 4 Universal Dock Adapter 3-Pack'. Neither information page gives an adapter number or a serial number. So which universal dock adapter is the right one for iPod touch 4th generation?

    I would get this one:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC650ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0OQ&mco=MTg5MTgxMjc
The one for the iPhone 4 will not work.  You can always call Apple and ask them.

  • Universal dock adapter for iPod classic

I am having problems obtaining a MA125G/B Universal Dock Adapter for my 160Gm iPod Classic. Now that all my music library is on the iPod, I am changing the "docks" from my car to my SUV to my home stereo system to a chargeable portable SONY docking station. I have only the one dock adapter #9 which came with the iPod. I live in Canada, and have had my Apple store try to locate a few additional adapters for me, but without success. I see that I can order one on line from Amazon.com, but when I go to purchase it, I am told that it can only be shipped within the US. Is there any retailer out there in Canada from whom I could purchase two or three of these universal adapters?

Actually, I'm not really replying to myself. I just want to confirm that the MA125 G/B universal dock adapter which I found on Amazon.com will be compatible with my 160GB iPod Classic? There is no picture shown with the adapter, and it says it is for an iPod Video 30GB. Is this adapter the one which has the number "9" stamped underneath the lip? I think I may be able to have it shipped to a friend in Fla.
