Universal keyboard shortcut to launch Finder?

I know that when I have Finder selected I can press Apple key +N to launch a new Finder window, or Apple key +up arrow to lauch the Home folder.
But is there a universal keyboard shortcut to launch any of these when I have another app selected?
For example if I have Safari selected is there a keyboard shortcut to launch Finder instead of clicking on the desktop to deselect Safari/select Finder & then hitting Apple key +up arrow or N?
Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3, 2.5 GB RAM, 20 Cinema Display   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

It works, thanks a lot
The keyboard shorctut is a little awkward so I've changed it to Control +A then Return.
Thanks again.

  • Keyboard Shortcut to open Finder?

    Is there a keyboard shortcut to open Finder? On my old windows machine I could press the windows key and E to open an explorer window and I used that all the time. I would love it if there was something like that for Finder. Sure I could click the icon on my dock, but I like using keyboard shortcuts as I find them faster. I know I can alt-tab, but if I have many things open then that is not fast at all. Please tell me I am not out of luck!

    If you like the keyboard you will really like writing a script or using the automator, either of which are extremely easy to learn and use.

  • Keyboard Shortcuts for Launching Programs

    How can I assign a keyboard shortcut to launch a program? For instance, the F13 key to launch Pages, etc.?

    Maybe I'm missing the point.
    probably. the hint work as follows. you pick an application you want to launch with a shortcut, say, Pages, as the OP wants. you make a service using automator that launches Pages. you make this service available in all applications so that you can launch Pages no matter what application is currently active. you then make a shortcut to this service in system preferences->keyboard->keyboard shortcuts. because you made the service available in all applications the shortcut will work in all applications, i.e. always.

  • How to specify a keyboard shortcut to launch an application

    I'm not much of a script writer but I have this script:
    tell application "System Preferences" to launch
    tell application "System Preferences"
    activate
    end tell
    It was saved as an application and it works fine when double-clicked.
    Now, how do I create a keyboard shortcut to run this script?

    the first line in your script is redundant but you don't need the script for this. see this link

    another option is to use a 3rd party application launcher like Butler, Quicksilver, launchbar etc.

  • Using keyboard shortcut to launch an application

    Does anyone know any free way to launch applications via a keyboard shortcut? For example I have an automator workflow that cleans up my desktop and archives it into a folder. I'd like it to be run whenever i hit command-option-F11. Is there any way to do this in OS X's built in Keyboard Shortcuts preference pane, or do I have to get a third party application?

    Hi Peter!
    There is not a built in way to launch apps via keyboard shortcuts on your Mac. (At least not that I know of?)
    A very popular app is Quicksilver. You can launch apps very quickly by typing in the first few letters of the name of the app. Most people that get used to it have a hard time going back...here's the link:

    If you make your Automater workflow into an app then you could launch it via Quicksilver...

  • Having problems with automator and setting up universal keyboard shortcut

    I have set up a service in automator to open quicktime, new audio capture, start capture. I named it "launch quicktime." I then when in to system preferences and went to the keyboard shortcuts section. I have tried in both services, and in application shortcuts to use my "launch quicktime" with the keyboard shortcut control + esc. I test it out in various applications and it doesn't work until I go to the top of said app for example safari and then go to services and select my launch quicktime. From that time on it works great. If I close safari and then relaunch it, it forgets that keyboard shortcut. What gives? I just want to be able to hit 2 keystrokes and have it launch quickime and begin an audio recording. Would greatly appreciate any help out there as to why it doesn't remember my keyboard shortcut.
    Cheers,
    Jon

    BUG: KEYBOARD SHORTCUT KEYS DO NOT ALWAYS ACTIVATE A SERVICE (A WORKFLOW)
    When you assign a keyboard shortcut to a Service (such as a Service Workflow created in Automator) using the System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts, if that shortcut key combination includes the Command key, pressing that shortcut will always successfully activate the Service. No problem there.
    However, shortcut key combinations that do not include the Command key (for example, the shortcut key combo Ctrl-Shift-D) WILL NOT activate the Service in any newly opened application, until you click on the Services Menu option in that application.

  • Is there a keyboard shortcut to launch 3rd party plugins in LR5?

    Looking for help creating great short cuts for express keys on Wacom Intous5 tablet.  Is there a keystroke to launch things like Nik Color Effect pro directly with photo being worked on in LR5?
    I know in PS6 you can create new shortcuts and make up one for each filter -  can you do anything similar from LR5?

    Hi,
    you might try a macro / keyboard recorder. I use autohotkey (www.autohotkey.com). If you have selected one or more items in the grid view and press ctrl-shift-n this script:
    ;LR Start external editor #7
    ^+n::
    #IfWinActive Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
    Send {RButton}
    Send {Down 8}
    Send {Right}
    Send {Down 7}
    Send {Enter}
    return
    opens the files in the 7th external editor. Of course the number depends on your installed editors and might change with additional editors.

  • Is there a keyboard shortcut to launch firefox 3.6.3 with windows vista? Hot key (ctrl + alt + key) does not work.

    The hot key (ctrl + alt + key) does not work. This is in Windows Vista.

    Thank you Morbus and Cor-el, for your prompt replies. Here's what I did: I've placed the Firefox icon in the quick launch toolbar. So I right-click this firefox icon>Properties>Shortcut tab>in Shortcut Key field, add X (the word "None" changes to "ctrl + alt + X")>Apply>Okay>and that closes the dialog window.
    Then, to try the new launch short-cut, I press and hold down, in order, ctrl, then alt, then x (holding all three down) . . . and nothing launches.
    I thought this would do it! So any further thoughts would be a splendid help ---- many thanx!

  • Keyboard Shortcuts to launch Apps

    In a bygone era of Windows, it use to be possible to set keys or combinations thereof, to launch applications ControlShiftkey or FUNC + key . . .
    Is this possible in SL? I see where one can create shortcuts that work within a designated application but I would like to have a simple key stroke combination to launch an application(s) without creating an alias or script?

    the easiest is to use a 3rd party app launcher. there are loads of them and any one will do this: Qucksilver, Butler,launchbar, Spark,ikeys etc. you can also do it without 3rd party tools using automator. see this link

  • Change keyboard shortcut for "Find"

    The default keyboard shortcut for the "find" function is Cmd-Opt-F. As you know, for virtually every other Mac app (if not all Mac apps), the shortcut for "find" is simply Cmd-F. In iTunes, though, Cmd-F turns the visualiser full-screen mode on and off. I never use the visualiser, and decades of Mac use have hard-wired my fingers for Cmd-F to be "find." I know that there is a method in System Preferences by which to change or assign associations between drop-down menu items and keyboard shortcuts, but there is no menu item for "find" so that method seems like a dead end.
    Is there a way to replace Cmd-Opt-F with Cmd-F in iTunes?
    Help, please!!!

    to be quite honest i dont no how exactly to do this,
    i just know it can be done. i have had no problem
    opening .plist files in vi-make sure you are in root
    account for system files.
    They (the .plist files) don't seem particularly readable in vi -- they seem to contain a lot of binary content. In earlier versions of OS X they were plain text and easily edited.....
    Solaris huh? how powerful
    is that? i dont know much about solaris . . . . like
    to try it though. recommendations?
    It's a more "traditional" Unix, meaning that it's very powerful, fairly bulletproof, very configurable, and pretty obtuse if you're not familiar with it. I like my Mac better!

  • How to disable keyboard shortcut for Type-And-Transfer

    Hi,
    I'm trying to create a macro in Excel that I want to use the ctrl+shft+h keyboard shortcut. However, Lenovo's Type-and-Transfer tool has hijacked that shortcut so everytime I try to use the shortcut within Excel it launches the Type-and-Transfer tool. I've looked everywhere and cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to disable this keyboard shortcut from launching the Type-and-Transfer tool. Anybody have any idea?
    Thanks in advance,
    jd

    Hi,
    here is what I would check in:
    Registry:
    - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\IBM
    - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\LENOVO
    - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM
    - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lenovo
    <sorry as I don't havea system with this shortcut type I cannot find the exact same key combination>
    My second thought is going more in the direction of an application, that is called Keyboard Customizer
    Try this one, if that will fit your request.
    Let me know any update, that you can give on this situation.
    Cheers

  • Keyboard shortcut macros?

    I've been using various programs for 20 years, that allow me to open the files I use daily with a simple keystroke, such as control/tab or control/p. Since I just upgraded to snow leopard, I find that my iKey program doesn't work, and that it hasn't been updated for several years. I used quickeys for many years before iKey. I figured that there must be some built-in way to use this kind of function now, such as scripts or automator, which i have never needed before, but i can't find anything anywhere after an hour of searching. Am I missing something obvious? Can anyone help me please? thank you.

    With the new Services architecture, you can create keyboard shortcuts to launch apps with a small amount of work in Automator and Keyboard Shortcuts.
    Open Automator and select Service.
    Set Service receives No Input.
    Drag in a Get Specified Finder Items and add your app to the list.
    Drag in an Open Finder Items; leave as open with default application.
    Save this with a name that most likely won't show up in another app. Generally "Open " and app name will likely work.
    Now, open Keyboard System Preferences and select the keyboard shortcuts tab.
    Add an new item to the list and name it the same as your service.
    Add the command key code you want to use.
    Now, you can start up the app with the command key you assigned. You could even add several apps and documents to the "Get Specified Finder Items" action.

  • Make Alias for Keyboard Shortcut?

    How can I create a clickable alias for a keyboard shortcut, e.g. something like the Mission Control app where I click the icon in Finder or the dock and I trigger a global behavior normally activated by a keyboard shortcut?

    If the keyboard shortcut actually launches a file or program, then you might be able to determine what that is and put it in the Dock.
    You could also create and Applescript Application using the System Events dictionary to type the command.

  • Keyboard shortcuts from Greek Input not working for my account only

    I just upgraded to Leopard from Tiger 10.4.11 on my MBP 2.4 listed below. The Installer took care of everything, and after it was finished, my own account, the only Admin account, misbehaves when it comes to keyboard shortcuts in the Finder or any other app. To use the shortcuts, the Input flag must US English. If it's Greek, nothing works.
    If I switch to the other two accounts on my Mac, one of which was carried over from the Tiger setup, the other I setup after the OS upg, both of which are Std accounts, not Admin, shortcuts work regardless of the keyboard input flag.
    Tips, anyone?

    That's alright, folks, problem solved:
    Ran Leopard Cache Cleaner, and selected from Caches the third option (deep clean).
    Thanks, anyway. Hope this may help some other poor sod.
