Universal Proxy settings...ideas?

Our corporate network team uses Trend products for our company proxy/web filtering solution. My issues are with it are as follows and I was wondering if anyone here has any suggestions:
1) The proxy requires authentication. For our Windows users this is not an issue b/c it's tied to their AD account. When they login to the domain the a script sets their proxy settings and their logged in credentials provide pass thru from there. On the Macs, not so simply. Because we are currently still using local accounts for our Mac users, they have to authenticate via dialog box that pops up, which of course they can then add to their KeyChain. No "big" problem here, but it leads to others...
2) OS X proxy settings in the Network prefs only work on Safari. They do not affect Firefox or Netscape, both of which we need for various other websites which don't work with Safari. Specifically our employee time sheet service (ADP) and our corporate help desk system.
Is there a way, perhaps by leveraging a proxy.pac file on a server or something, to set it up so that when we put all our settings in an image, it works for every user that hits the machine, no matter what browser they use?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Cody

Hey Cody, I hate to pass the buck, but I think you would get a faster response if you posted this in the "Getting Online & Networking" discussion at:

I think they would help you better...not that we wouldn't try.

  • How to edit proxy settings of available WLAN????

i OWN NOKIA C-3 AND FACING PROBLEM IN USING WIFI AT MY UNIVERSITY. IT SEARCHES AVAILABLE NETWORKS AND GETS CONNECTED BUT WHEN I TRY TO BROWSE THERE APPEARS AN ERROR THAT "SERVICE NOT AVAILABLE" ITS BECOZE THE PROXY SETTINGS IT PICKS UP AUTOMATICALLY ARE MAY B INCOMPLETE OR INCORRECT AND I DIDNT FOUND ANY OPTION TO EDIT ITS SETTINGS EPECIALLY PROXY SETTINGS. FEW OF MY FRIENDS ARE USING SOME OLDER MODELS OF NOKIA AND THEY HAVE EDITING OPTIONS OF PROXY ADDRESS ETC OF NETWORK WHICH YOU ARE CONNECTED WITH BUT IN MY C-3 I JUST CAN VIEW THE SETTINGS PICKED UP AUTOMATICALLY BUT CANT EDIT SETTINGS
CAN ANY BODY HELP ME TO TACKLE THIS PROBLEM?

unfortunately i have to use 1.4 which makes this a bit more tricky.
my other idea was to use system.setProperties to set the 2 proxy fields and then afterwards set them back to what they were -- however in the case they were null I get an NPE when I try and set them back, so I'd need a workaround for that as well.

  • Proxy Settings Re-Appear after Reboot in Registry Post Malware Clean (Windows 8.1 x64)

    Hey Guys -
My main system at home hosts many different things for me.  Because I'm an idiot and had protection disabled, I caught some malware which I cleaned off soon
afterwards.  The malware was listed as Trojan.Generic.KD or something similar.  It had enabled Proxy and set it to 127.0.0.1:58054.  I ran Malwarebytes, Spybot, then ExecuteIt to clean the malware off and currently the scans from all 3 apps
come back clean.  I also had to manually disable proxy via IE settings.
I have one specific app which for whatever reason will use Proxy settings if they are there over anything else and doesn't offer and configuration to disable it.
Even though proxy is disabled (and cleared) in IE, this app still doesn't work and I still seemingly get redirected to ads in Chrome sometimes.  The log file of the app showed it was trying to connect through 127.0.0.1:58054.  The thing is,
IE Settings still show Proxy disabled!
    The Issue
I checked many things are read a few articles to try to fix this including different Windows 8.1 settings, local Group Policy, startup items, checking Run keys
in HKLM and HKCU for "out of place" entries, and more.  Finally, I opened the registry and did s keyword search for ":58054" and found one key with it.  I cleared out all of the data and set the EnableProxy string from "1"
to "0", rebooted, and tried again but the app still failed with the same log message.  I went back into the registry and found out that the strings I changed had all been changed back!  Below is the key / strings I'm talking about which
    are located in HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings.  It's odd because I usually deal with HKLM and HKCU and don't think I've ever worked in ".DEFAULT" on any system ever before.
I know that a full OS re-install is suggested - and I actually do it every 3-4 months religiously - but - I currently don't have the time for the full day it
takes to perform due to how many things it hosts.
Any ideas on how I can get this to stop coming back after each restart until I can perform the re-install?  Below are the system specs.  Thanks!
    System Specs
    - Intel i7-3770k / 16gb RAM
    - x3 partitions  256gb SSD for OS & Apps  /  24tb Disk Pool for Storage  /  500gb Hybrid drive for App installs
    - Windows 8.1 Update 1 x64 (Fully Patched)
    Thanks again!
    Ben K.

    Hi,
.default is the profile for the Local System account and is an alias for
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18, Consequently, settings in HKEY_USERS\.Default are used by programs and services that run as Local System.
    In addition to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
    Settings, please also check HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
    Settings and HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings, make sure all proxy server disabled, then press F5 to refresh registry, check the application, if the issue disappears, the the registry entry is the culprit. Then please reboot the PC, if the issue appears again, the virus is not cleared in your
system. In this case, please try other virus clean program if possible, meanwhile, check if there're unknown software installed in your system.

  • How to access proxy settings in terminal

I want to use git in the terminal, but unfortunately I'm sometimes (but not always) behind a firewall that requires me to use a proxy server.
I've successfully set up environments for all these locations, including the proxy settings that are relevant in each context, but I'm unable to access them in the terminal (i.e. there's no HTTP_PROXY environment variable). My idea is to 'inherit' the system wide proxy settings in the terminal and use them to configure git.
Is there any way to access the proxy settings in the terminal.

In you home directory, create a file called .bash_profile (notice the leading dot)
    nano .bash_profile
    add to that file
    export HTTP_PROXY="http://your.proxy.information:nnn"
    Save the file
    Restart the Terminal session.
Command line Git should work via the environment variable you just created.
NOTE: you will need to use
    ls -a
to see the .bash_profile in a Terminal session, and because the leading dot makes it an invisible file, the Finder will not show it without some magic Finder Foo

  • Locking proxy settings in Firefox 6? doesn't seem to work the same as 5?

Trying to lock down the proxy settings so users can't disable the proxy. Did this in 5 by editing the firefox.js file in omni.jar then creating a mozzila.cfg file, but same technique doesn't appear to work in 6.
    Any ideas what's different?

This does not seem to apply to Firefox 6. I cant locate a place to configure all user settings like there was in the previous versions of Firefox. My Scenario is-
Terminal Server on 2008 R2 and trying to configure all user settings that will apply to all users launching Firefox from the TS.
All documentation and references I have found after an exhaustive search all reference FF 4 and before. Any thoughts?

  • Firefox not detecting/using system proxy settings

I use a command line script to change among various proxies (and none). Firefox does not recognize when a proxy is turned on or fails to connect to it (no error messages), while other browsers and applications do just fine.
I have tried selecting "Use system proxy settings" and "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network."
My script contains these lines to activate a proxy
    reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections" /v DefaultConnectionSettings /t REG_BINARY /d 46000000b10000000200000014000000736f636b733d3132372e302e302e313a313131311c0000002a2e6c6f63616c3b3139322e3136382e31312e2a3b3c6c6f63616c3e000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 /f
    reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyEnable /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
    reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v MigrateProxy /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
The first line enables the proxy to take effect without entering inetcpl.cpl. Again, this works for any application other than Firefox.
The proxies are all through ssh with port forwarding.
I do not want to manually configure a proxy in Firefox, because I do not want to change this every time I need to change proxies or turn them off. This is not an acceptable solution.
I am on Windows 8.1 64bit, with Firefox version 35.0
Any idea what might be going on here?

Thank you for the response, but as above, the "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network." setting does not work.

  • Proxy settings frequently being ignored

I've got a frustrating issue with proxies that I hope someone can shed some light on.
I've got a relatively normal networking set up (statically assigned IP address via local LAN), and any web access must be via a proxy. I've got my proxies set under networking options, and using Safari I can browse the web, and Software Update works. I have only one Location defined.
I also have a number of other pieces of software installed that access the web and supposedly use the proxies set under networking options. e.g. Version Tracker, Mac Fixit, and a couple of other lesser known pieces.
Now here's the annoying part; a lot of the time these pieces seem to ignore the proxy settings and try to go direct (I know this because I can see the packets bouncing off my gateway/firewall). Other times they will honour the proxy and work as expected (this seems to be the exception rather than the rule however :/ ).
For the life of me I can't figure out what the magic ingredient is when it all works as expected. When it doesn't work properly, I can go to the command line and "scutil --proxy" will show the proxy settings as they should be. But they seem to be either unavailable to the offending applications or the Location is screwed up or something.
Does anyone have any idea on why on earth this might be happening? I'd love to get to the bottom of this and have my proxies work consistently...

Well that prompted me to check again the most notable program I have that has this issue - Version Tracker.
So doing a "Check" results in a connect via HTTPS to the VT servers after the disks have been scanned, which works as expected and I can see the entry in my proxy logs.
    CONNECT client.versiontracker.com:443 - DIRECT/66.179.48.104
Then clicking on one of the items that is available to update, which is supposed to load info about the package in the pane below the results, hits my firewall as it tries to go direct via HTTP. So VT is successfully using HTTPS, but not HTTP.
However, as stated originally, my HTTP proxy is definitely set and Safari, et al work when I try and test them. Now I know it's likely that VT itself has some issues in it's code, but I suspect there is something more than just a bug in VT going on here. I've noticed other apps not work as well (these failures are all HTTP). And sometimes VT works and returns the info screen (unless on some rare occasions VT decides to use HTTPS for these screens as well - however, I can't reproduce this; sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't).
So programmatically speaking, is there more than one way for an app to get proxy details? Does the system cache this result anywhere? Is it possible for something to interfere with this process or possibly corrupt any cache, etc? It certainly seems odd that an app can get back (and use) the HTTPS proxy details correctly but not the HTTP proxy details. :/

  • VPN Proxy Settings With Third Party Software

Im just wondering if this is possible. When I go to university I've setup a VPN connection and inside of that I've put proxy settings for the available protocols. HTTP, socks, etc.
Well all software built into os x (itunes, safari) use these proxy settings automatically when connected to the VPN. So when I go to uni I click one button to connect and that's it.
What Im wondering: Is it possible for third party software (Firefox, IRC clients) to grab these proxy settings from the VPN? At the moment I'm having to manually add the proxies to these apps every time I go to uni, then disable them when I go home.

Many users have found Authoxy to be the solution for most proxy issues.

  • Proxy settings not holding in 10.3.9 on G5's

    Hello all,
I have some G5's that were built by another company to their SOE and I am having issues with them not using the proxy settings I have put into network prefs.
We use a proxy server to get to the net and I have put the correct settings in but Software update doesn't work and Safari doesn't either.
Firefox was on the machine also so I put the proxy setting into it (into it's prefs) and it took the setting OK and got to the net.
It's as if the underlying system won't take notice of the proxy settings.
    Any ideas guys ?

  • Proxy settings in OSX 10.4.6 iBook G4

    Hi,
I recently changed proxy settings to using a pac file (http://wpad.bham.ac.uk)as my university stated that this was the best way to access athens and suchlike.
However, I keep getting a pop up box telling me to enter my username and password- every time I log on to anything requiring a password, and Itunes refuses to let me open the music store or connect to the internet. I have tried changing the proxy bit back to manual rather than using a pac file but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
    Please help!!

    Hi Mmkay,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I am sorry, but just to make sure; Does the Sudden Motion Sensor not show up in System Profile (Getting Information About Your Computer (System Profiler)). In System Profiler > click on the Hardware tab > Look in the main window and you should seen Sudden Motion Sensor below Serial Number. Does it say State: Enabled? If it doesn't show up, bring it to your local Apple Store. I don't think that reinstalling the system software will make a difference.

  • HTTP Adaptor for RESTful service calls -- Proxy Settings?

    Hi Guys,
I have successfully configured an HTTP Adaptor on my Access Server, imported a REST service function, set up DTDs etc etc all ok.
Now, when it comes to calling this function in a data-flow, the run of the job just times out while calling the function. I have tried this via another route and this time-out occured their too until I entered my proxy server login details.
I am assuming I need to do this for the HTTP Adaptor but there is no parameter/setting around for me to do this.
Could you please tell me how I can get my proxy settings in place for the HTTP call? If the solution involves the "axis2" file, please could you give me clear/step-by-step instructions on how to use this and deploy it as that area is all new to me.
Thanks very much for any help.
    Flip.

you can set the proxy server details in the Additional JVM Arguments of the HTTP Adapter Configuration using the following syntax. Add this to existing memory setting args
    -Dhttp.proxyHost=<enter proxyserver name> -Dhttp.proxyPort=<enter proxy port>
have no idea how to specify the credentials, not sure if that can be done using Java arguments, if you are on windows try running the Jobservice under named user, and see if it works

  • Fring not working on 5800 with proxy settings

I have already set my internet proxy settings and so internet works perfectly fine. What I dont understand is why my fring won't work. Any help? Thanks.

Hi. I m Rai Singh using Nokia 5800 XM. I sucessfully installed fringSymbian94.sis , no probs But i m unable to connect via gprs. I m using idea gors service (NOP99).
    My gprs settings are
    Apn SpiceExcite
    Usr name Blank
    Passwrd Blank
    Authentication Normal
    Advanc setings-
    Proxy 10.11.12.13
    Port 9401
I had also tried without proxy and with secured authenticatn bt same result NO. I think fring developers hav to solve this prob in the nxt upcoming version to meet the challenges of other IM providers as it is major drawback of fring. Otherwise it is awesom software. Hoping for quick action from ur side..

  • Distributing a deployment.config and deployment.properties for proxy settings.

I am trying to define the minimum config required to populate a deployment.properties with just proxy settings and point to this with a deployment.config.
I am finding that that recent versions of 1.7 and 1.8 do not adhere to the browsers settings properly and not all traffic is following the proxy rules in use by the browser. However, if I manually override all traffic to a proxy the applets running on internet based sites function (no intranet sites use java here). If I use a deployment.config, I can see the resulting proxy settings are enabled in the control panel app and the appear exactly the same as per user manual settings, however they are not correctly used.have any ideas?
    Any one have any ideas?.
    Thanks

    Hi Kevin,
I am actually working on the same problem.
I need to deploy Java 1.4.2_07 on clients with a mandatory setup. I tryied the deployment.config and deployment.properties file but didn't get it working yet.
I guess we should share knowledge to find a working solution.
It would be nice, if you could email me at:

  • Managed proxy settings not being applied

I am currently having an issue with a certain managed preferences set in Workgroup manager.
Essentially, all machine preferences are applied by the clients (energy saver and such), except for network proxy settings and bypass domains.
Preferences are set on machine groups which my clients are members of, but the same happens if I set the same managed preferences on user accounts, also.
In each test I have done, an 'mcxquery' shows that the client has received the preferences, along with all the other settings I've applied and each time all of the preferences have applied except for the network proxy! Both the clients and the server have been re-installed from scratch, but the problem still persists.
Has anyone ever encountered anything similar? Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might get this working again?

    Hi all,
I'm having exactly the same issue : most of the managed preferences being applied except proxy
I've checked with mcxquery : proxy settings are broadcasted, and I find the correct settings in the file /Library/Managed Preferences for the user, but when I check in Preferences/Network/Proxy, nothing appears ...
    Any idea ?
    Thanks,
    PhC.

  • Safari not adhering to proxy settings

I'm a new Mac user, so bear with me if I'm missing something obvious...
I am attempting to use Safari through a proxy, while connected to a VPN. However, after setting the proxy values within the network settings, Safari still does not attempt to send traffic through the defined proxy. A tcpdump on the proxy server confirms that no traffic is inbound to the proxy from my IP. Using the same proxy settings in firefox, I can connect just fine.
    Any ideas?

I am having the same problem and some insights will be appreciated. I did notice one thing, though.
If I set my proxy, then connect using the VPN, it seems to pick up the proxy setting. Similarly, on disconnect, I unset my proxy and then disconnect and safari picks up the new settings. If I do not do things in this order then I get into a situation when either Safari thinks there is no proxy when one has been set or, worse, thinks that it should be connecting to a proxy when there is none.
This seems to indicate that there is some kind of cache of proxy information in Safari which is cleared on the VPN connect and disconnect.
Any way around this issue will be much appreciated.
    Raghu
