Universal Software Status

Hi,
I was just wondering if you know which of these software is already universal?
If they are not am I able to use them through Rosetta?
- Norton Anti-Virus 10
- Macromedia Studio 8
- TechTools Pro 4
- Opera
- Flip4Mac
- Maplesoft Maple 10
Which files have to be universal? Do I also need universal fonts or other non program files?
Thanks for your help!

Macromedia Studio 8: Not universal, but runs adequately in Rosetta.
Flip4Mac: I believe it is not yet universal.
Maple 10: Certainly not universal. Same with MATLAB if you use that (contains the Maple engine).
Both carry the same problems that they are produced by a relatively "small" set of developers compared to products by companies like Adobe and Microsoft (not that these are any quicker at releasing updates however) so it takes a while for major revamps (like making an app universal) to happen. Cerrtainly in the case of MATLAB, there are no plans for the current version (2006a) or (2006b) to be made Universal and I fear Maple is much the same. However, both say support is on the way...
Also, note that they cannot be run in Rosetta due to their reliability on Java interfaces which just plainly are not supported by Rosetta. However, I know that MATLAB can be run through the terminal using the command-line only interface - maybe of some use?
The rest I don't no, but all their websites should tell you.

  • Can UCE communicate to the Universal Knowledge Base and Universal Software

    Question
Can UCE communicate to the Universal Knowledge Base and Universal Software Component Repository through a company proxy server?
    Answer
During the install process of the OnStage Management Server, the OnStage EZ-installer will detect your local proxy server whilst establishing communications with the Aduva Universal Servers.
In this instance, the user is prompted for the proxy parameters, including IP address of the proxy or proxy server name if DNS is present, proxy user name and password.
This information is stored locally in the .director.rc file and is never communicated to Aduva or any other 3rd party.
Once the proxy settings have been correctly inputed during installation, OnStage will indeed work through the proxy server.

  • New Universal Software

I was reading about the new Universal software and it said that many software companies will be changing to the universal formant, does this mean that i will need to buy all the software i have agian? And if not will the older verions take full advantage of the duo's power?

    Hi, Killer45.
Those articles are discussing Universal Binaries. Applications that are written as Universal Binaries will run on either PowerPC-based (PPC-based) Macs or Intel-based Macs.
Many third-party applications available today, especially widely-used apps like MS Office and the products in the Adobe Creative Suite, were written for PPC-based Macs. They use code that depends on the PPC chip architecture.
Most applications that were written for PPC-based Macs will run on Intel-based Macs under Rosetta. Rosetta is a feature of the version of Mac OS X on Intel-based Macs that enables PPC-based apps to run on Intel-based Macs. It uses a technology called transcoding that essentially substitutes Intel-based instructions for PPC-based instructions when needed and in real time.
The upside of Rosetta is that one can use their PPC-based, Mac OS X applications on new Intel-based Macs.
    The downsides of Rosetta are
1, Apps running under Rosetta generally perform slower on Intel-based Macs than PPC-based Macs.
    2. Some PPC-based apps cannot run under Rosetta. The specific requirements for a PPC-based application to run under Rosetta are detailed in "Appendix A: Rosetta" of the Universal Binary Programming Guidelines.
Applications that are Universal Binaries run natively on Intel-based Macs, i.e. they do not need help from Rosetta.
Note that Classic, aka Mac OS 9, applications will not run on Intel-based Macs.
Hence, if you have, or are planning to buy, an Intel-based Mac, most, if not all, of your PPC-based Mac OS X applications will run. However, some may not perform up to your expectations due to the performance penalty that Rosetta can incur. In such cases, to get the best performance you'd need to upgrade to the Universal Binary versions of your third-party Mac OS X applications when such are published by their developers.
    Good luck!

  • Where to find the release dates for Universal software

Can anyone point me in the direction of where I can get info on release dates of the Universal binary software and games.
Also would Rosetta really slow up a game like The Sims2 or would I not notice?
    Chris

    Donnchaidh,
Have a look here for some information on Universal Binary games.

  • Universal software....

I just switched and I need Photoshop Elements. I see they have a mac version 4.0 for $80.
How do I know if this is a universal app which is supposed to work better on my intel machine?
If it is not, am I better off waiting for one to come out?

    i Sez:
Any software that has been accelerated to take advantage of the Intel duo core chips will have the new Universal Binary label proudly displayed on the box right beside the MacOS label. The MacOS label is 2-tone blue & has the Happy Mac square and the Universal Binary label is the same 2-tone blue but it resembles a taijitu, the traditional symbol representing the forces of yin and yang.
This is similar to the Accelerated for PowerMacintosh labels back when Apple transitioned from 680X0 processors to the PPC chips. Older software would still work but it could not take advantage of all of the speed of the new processors. Elements 4 WILL work beautifully on your new iMac. The next version will work even better.
Photoshop Elements 4 for Macintosh is long overdue for an update so you can expect a new release of PSElements for Mac pretty soon. It will be a Universal Binary program.
Write to Adobe and ask when it will be available.

  • Will the Universal Software run on original Mac??

    Hi All,
Seens Apple had introduce the Intel base Mac, I'm a bit worry about the Mac software will be obsolete between 3-5 years later, without the software support, I think the G4/G5 base system will be a piece of junk soon.
How could people invest a high-end computer without software in next few year? Anyone clear with the situation?
    Regards,
    Goh

Apple says it will migrate its entire product line to Intel by the end of the calendar year. This means that all the hardware they make after that will be Intel, it does not mean that they will not be making software for only Intel Macs after that. Apple has pledged to support the PPC for some time, they still have, and will have a lot of users on PPC.
OSX-PPC and OSX-Intel are the same, they just run differently due to different chips, so programing for OSX should run just as well on either. If developers are using Apples X-Code tools all they have to do in theory is check on extra check box to make a Universal that will run on both, the extra time in development is in testing two platforms.
Codeing for OS9 and OSx were writing for different OS's so they had to start over basically.
It will be a long time before the Intel Mac number get near the PPC installed base right now.

As a PC user you can use a number of programs to do these things. The only thing you can't do is send sms from the computer, you can do all that from the iphone.
-For calender and contacts the iPhone syncs with Microsoft Outlook (2003 or 2007)
-Photos are synced through itunes, you import them from the iphone using the windows photo importer (which opens automatically when it detects new photos on the iphone).
-There are a number of ways to get custom ringtones, one is itunes. You can google search for a number of ways to make more without itunes using freeware.

  • Release dates for various universal software and games????

Hi everyone. I am totally new to Apple, infact a week ago I took the plunge from PC to Mac and ordered a Imac G5. Luckily Apple contacted me before it was shipped a offered me the the new system, which I gladly took.
My question is should I wait until the new universal editions of the programs and games are released or will I not even notice a difference using the older editions through Rosetta? Does anyone know when the universal editions of many popular programs and games should start to appear?
    Thanks
    Leecho

It's the old name for what we now know as RoboHelp (as opposed to TCS). At that time I think it included the bits we get now but then could be purchased separately. Rick will probably recall that better.
I don't have release dates but there is no expiry date as such. Support is only available for the current and previous versions. Beyond that they just keep running. X4 (12) and X5 (13) are problematic in that they require activation and can no longer be activated. For X5 there is a download to get around that. For X4 you are plain out of luck.

  • Dual Core Intel - can I install non-universal software?

Can I install the non-universal version of Adobe Creative Suite onto my new G5 dual-core duo?

Yes you can, I've done it myself and it works pretty good.
Usually doing this results in slower performance because the application's binaries aren't a type Intel's processor can read. So Apple's application Rosetta compiles these binaries and translates them to Intel to be read by the computer.
This all happens while you running the application, which is why performance is slower.
Not to worry much about the technical terms, I'm sure all you want to know is if it's possible, and it is.

  • Any free Universal software for image resizing?

    Hi all,
Most of the time i downloaded huge image files from the net and have no tools to covert it to smaller size (e.g. 176x220)so that I can send it to my mobile phone as wallpaper.
I tried using the Iphoto but it does not resize, it's more like cropping.
    Any ideas?

I use a really neat little program called ImageWell. It works great.

I remember having to search, like you, to find a good image resizing app. Then I found ImageWell. The current version of ImageWell is a Universal Binary.

  • Inconsistent naming conventions for Adobe Reader in software scan

I just want to see if anyone knows why Adobe's free pdf Reader appears both as "Adobe Reader" AND "Adobe Acrobat Reader". I manage software licenses for an organization of 400+, and it's difficult to know if, for instance Adobe Acrobat - Reader 6.0.2 Update - 6.0.2, should or should not be counted as a purchased license without actually visiting each workstation to verify. I've spoken with our network operations personnel and they confirmed that it is not manually entered by our personnel, but that it is something in the software. ??
Furthermore, why are the naming conventions not consistent even among those that can be identified easily? The list below is what I see when I run a report for all Adobe software on our network.
    Adobe Acrobat - Reader 6.0.2 Update - 6.0.2
    Adobe Acrobat 4.0 - 4.0
Adobe Acrobat 5 -- SC Install

If anyone can answer this, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

    Junlie et al,
Starting with Acrobat 9 (announced on 6/2/08), Adobe will support the new ISO/IEC 19770-2 standard for universal software tagging. The new standard will allow customers to correctly identify the name, version, type and licensing status of Adobe software (starting with the Acrobat 9 family and later on as new versions of the products are introduced later this and next year).
I DO understand your frustration with the in consistencies in the naming of our software, but the problem of software discovery goes well beyond our lack of discipline. This is one of the many reasons why Adobe invested time and effort with the industry group defining the new open standard, and in software asset management in general.
More information about tagging standard can be found here: http://www.agnitioadvisors.com/info/content/view/44/1/

  • Apple TV cannot update software sucessfully

My Apple TV is currently on ver 2.3.1. Every time when I try to update the software, it downloads the software (successful) and tries to installs it (unsuccessful) afterwhich the amber light appears on the set and the question mark icon appears on the screen. What should I do?

Take it to an Apple Store.
At the very least don't keep trying to update as it is.
You could try holding menu and - keys for 6 secs which will boot to diagnostics, and from there do a factory restore which will wipe all settings/content.
There's a chance it will fail/break the AppleTV but I have to say it sounds as though it's failing now either due to an impending hardware fault or software corruption - if software you might be lucky and manage to return it to 'as new' software status.

  • FCP 5 universal

i have read apples site on universal software. straight to the point, which of the universal upgrades do i need to buy to get my DVD Studio 4, Motion 2 and Final Cut 5 powermac versions to work on my MacBook Pro with Intel processor. will the 199 DVD studio pro universal install work or do i have to buy each universal upgrade for each peace of software. apples 800 number takes too long and this discussion site is quicker. thanks for the help.

    Ted,
The ONE upgrade Patrick speaks of is the Final Cut Studio package - the individual apps (FCP, DVD-SP, SoundTrack Pro, etc) are no longer available separately.

  • Recent software update didn't remove some apps as promised

The tag for the recent LG Revolution Verizon update was it would remove "Mobile IM, Rockband, Bitbop, Verizon Apps, Blockbuster, Rhapsody, VCAST
Music, and Verizon Video" It didn't remove Blockbuster or Rhapsody.  In fact, Rhapsody is still running in my background processes.  The others seem to have been removed.  Anyone else encounter this?
Software status said the update was successful.  I am I missing something here?
Not sure if Verizon admins control this forum or not.  But, this phone is just horrible.  It has soured the milk for on any LG mobile products, and apprehensive towards Verizon in general.  Why would anyone load a already handicapped phone with all this bloatware?  And then, offer little to no support for it.  This is my last LG phone.

It was a gift from my wife.
If your intentions aren't to help.  Don't bother.

  • Installing new Software after Intel

I have always loved using my "Powerbook," however, with the age of Universal Software that will be accomodating the Intel processors will users of the Powerbook series no longer be able to download the new software?
    PowerbookG4 titanium   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Well the intel transition only really happened this year so they aren't gonna be dropping PPC support anytime soon I bet. I have had my PB G4 for Two years now and it's still fast enough for everything I come across, even games. Call of Duty 2 runs fine on my 1.5GHz G4. I plan on keeping my PB for at least another 2 > 3 years. By then the intels might "Actually" be worth the cost. (These Powerbooks aren't that cheap )
