Universal to Western European

Hello !
Due to an error in dowload links, I have unfortunately downloaded and installed the universal version of Oracle XE on linux, providing a wrong charset for my db. I'm now trying to switch for the WE one. But even if I fully uninstall the database and install the right package (Western European), charset is still the universal one...
Is there any configuration file on linux which is not removed when uninstalling ?
Or any way to change the charset from universal to european on oracle XE without formating ?

Oracle XE under linux is installed into the path /usr/lib/oracle/xe. Look for this path and delete it if exists after deinstallation. Look for files named oracle-xe in the /etc and /etc/sysconfig directories and delete them after deinstallation.

Only western European glyphs appear in PDF export

Our application uses the .NET report viewer component to display reports that may contain any Unicode characters. When this report is exported (via the .NET report viewer) only western European and Arabic glyphs are displayed in the PDF file. Glyphs from other languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Bengali, Malayalam, etc..) are rendered as empty boxes.
If this report is exported to any other format all of the glyphs can be displayed. The system where the report is viewed, exported, and where the exported report is viewed has the East Asian fonts and complex scripting installed. We can reproduce this on an XP SP3 machine and a Windows 2008 Server machine (these are the only systems we have tried).
If the report is exported to an excel document, and then the excel document is saved as a PDF then all glyphs can be rendered in the excel-generated PDF.
Looking at the PDF properties in Adobe Reader I see that the PDF generated by the Crystal Reports viewer contains only the font we specified in the report (Tahoma), while the excel-generated PDF includes several of the fonts to which the Tahoma OpenType font is linked.
This problem was observed using the Crystal Reports 2008 SP2 runtime.
How can we get the PDF export to include the linked fonts needed to render the non-western European glyphs?

The source of this problem is embedded fonts in PDF documents. The font we chose did not include all of the glyphs used by the report. Windows can be configured with linked and fallback fonts that can provide glyphs when a character is not included in a font, but PDF documents only use the glyphs embedded in them.
The solution was to use a different font. When our software generates a report it will first replace all of the fonts in the report with the font MS Shell Dlg2 is configured to use. This font always contains English glyphs and glyphs for the language of the operating system, which almost always contains all the characters in the report.

I have Adobe 10.0.01.When I try to open .PDF files received in Microsoft Outlook I get an "opening mail attachment" window saying only opne from trusted sources . when I continue I get another window saying Windows default with a language selected as Western European and the display of the file is essentially "gibberish" of apparently numbers and characters. hope this gets to you OK this time

Approach to converting database character set from Western European to Unicode

I am looking for the below information. If anyone could help provide would be great!
INFORMATION NEEDED: Approach to converting database character set from Western European to Unicode for source systems with large data exceptions
DETAIL: We are looking to convert Oracle EBS database character set from Western European to Unicode to support Kanji characters. Our scan results show
both “lossy (110K approx.)” and “truncation (26K approx.)” exceptions in the database which needs to be fixed before the database is converted to Unicode.
Oracle Support has suggested to fix all open and closed transactions in the source Production instance using forms and scripts.
We’re looking for information/creative approaches who have performed similar exercises without having to manipulate data in the source instance.
Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated!

There are two aspects here:
1. Why do you have such large number of lossy characters? Is this data coming from some very old eBS release, i.e. from before the times of the Java applet interface to Oracle Forms? Have you analyzed the nature of this lossy data?
2. There is no easy way around truncation issues as you cannot modify eBS metadata (make columns wider). You must shorten or remove the data manually through the documented eBS interfaces. eBS does not support direct manipulation of data in the database due to complex consistency rules enforced by the application itself (e.g. forms).

Character set mapping (western european to US ascii)

Hi everyone,
I am trying to convert a string with western european character set to US Ascii character set. Idea is to remove all "accent" on top of the "accented characters"
Here is an example .À should be converted to A.
I have tried using the following, but some characters are not converted.
SELECT decompose(to_single_byte('ÀÁÂÃÄÅÆÇÈÉÊËÌÍÎÏÐÑÒÓÔÕÖ×ØÙÚÛÜÝÞßïîíìëêéèçæåäãâáà'))
FROM dual;
The result is :
AAA?A??CEEEEIIII??OOO?O??UUUUY??iiiieeeec??a?aaa
As you can see, 12 characters converted to questions marks, meaning they didnt converted properly like others.
I will appreciate any suggesstions or code example of how people have tried to convert western european character set to US Ascii.

Where a character does not exist in the destination character set, a replacement character appears. .
I can understand that × Ø Æ Þ ß are not ASCII characters but it's strange that some characters with ~ and ° "accents" are not considered as ASCII. Maybe you can try to code your own function in PL/SQL to handle these special cases and then call this function in SQL.

Received .PDF files which when opened are in "Western European Windows" and are just gibberish. I have adobe 10.0.01 installed now. Can you help please in how to correct this Thanks

I received three files in Microsoft Outlook in a PDF format. When I clicked on open I got a window showing "Opening Mail Attchment" and only open from "trusted" sources. After opening it displayed a window for File conversion with Windows as the default with Western European( Windows) as I assume the font. The file was shown but had essentially meaningless characters and numbers with maybe the occasional meaningful word. There seems no way to understand why this happened or to correct it. Can you help please

Western European Characterset to Turkish in sql

I am having a serious issue with character encoding. I know I asked a similar question some days back but the requirement is different here.
To give some background:
1. I have turkish business users who enter some data on Unix screens in Turkish language.
2. My database NLS parameter is set to AMERICAN, WE8ISO8859P1 and Unix NLS_LANG to AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1.
3. Turkey business is able to see all the turkish characters on UNIX screens and TOAD while I'm not. I can only see them in Western European Character set.
At business end: ÖZER İNŞAAT TAAHHÜT VE
At our end : ÖZER ÝNÞAAT TAAHHÜT VE
If you notice the turkish characters İ and Ş are getting converted to ISO 8859-1 character set. However, all the settings(NLS paramaters in db and unix) are same at both end- ISO8859-1(Western European)
With some study, I can understand - Turkish machines can display turkish data by doing conversion in real-time(DB NLS settings are overridden by local NLS settings).
Now, I have a interface running in my db- have some PL/SQL scripts(run through shell script) that extracts some data from database and spool them to a .csv file on a unix path. Then that .csv file is transferred to an external system via MFT(Managed File transfer).
The problem is- Exract never conains any turkish character. Every turkish character is getting converted into Western European Characterset and goes like this to the external system which is treated as a case of data conversion/loss and my business is really unhappy.
Could anyone tell me - How could I retain all the turkish characters?
P.S. : External System's characterset could be set to ISP8859-9 charcterset.

So basically the chosen database character set is not suitable for the language/alphabet requirements or expectations.

Use Oracle SQL Developer for querying character data, because it is somewhat immune to character conversion issues, as compared to e.g. Toad.
Use something like the following to verify what character data is actually stored -- the key here is dump() function:
select column, dump(column, 1016) from table where suitable_condition ... ;
With some study, I can understand - Turkish machines can display turkish data by doing conversion in real-time(DB NLS settings are overridden by local NLS settings).Very likely, what you see is a "side effect" of the pass-through configuration (aka garbage in, garbage out).

I'm guessing the client part of NLS_LANG for shell environment is either set/defaults to US7ASCII or is set to WE8ISO8859P9
However, the basic issue is that application does not legally store any turkish (specific) characters in the database, per character set in use.
Could anyone tell me - How could I retain all the turkish characters?Quick "fix": continue with pass-through setup, ignoring character set definition.
Solution:
- Change database character set to AL32UTF8, which supports most common languages -- but such migration might not be doable in the short term.
- Change to ISO 8859-9 corresponding database character set WE8ISO8859P9 (or win-1254 corresponding TR8MSWIN1254) -- also takes a migration effort and some required other language characters may be missing from char set repertoire e.g. for non-Turkish users.

Western european an Polish character set

Dear gurus,
I 'm work on oracle database 10R2 server with Western European character set. We now want to include polish character to suit a new customer. Inorder to keep our wester eurpean languages (English, danish, swedish etc) and the new polish, I converted the database server and the window webserver client to Unicode UTF8 but I am unable to retrieve some polish characters such as ( ą ć ę ł ń ś ż ź) as they are display differently from the original characters.
If the know the best character set/how to configure the database to support both western european (not only english) and polish character sets please share your view.

Before you can determine whether the characters are displayed correctly, you need to determine that they are stored correctly.
The dump function is useful for this
For example if I dump this entire string
select dump('ą ć ę ł ń ś ż ź') from dual;
I get the following
Typ=96 Len=23: 196,133,32,196,135,32,196,153,32,197,130,32,197,132,32,197,155,32,197,188,32,197,186
and dumping individual characters, eg
select dump('ą') from <yourtable>l;
Typ=96 Len=2: 196,133
I do this test with OracleSqlDeveloper running on the Database Server which has a UTF8 characterset
Check out the globalisation guide. The basic principle here is that the NLS_LANG character setting on your client should be the same as on your server.
eg if you are using a windows client and your server NLS_LANG is set to AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8 and teh NLS_LANG setting in the windows registry is AMERICAN_AMERICA.ASCII7, then you would need to change the NLS_LANG setting in the windows registry to AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8.
This would then resolve the issues with client display.
So,the steps here are (and in order)
1) Ensure your Data is stored correctly on the server (Insert on server )
2) Ensure your Data is retrieved correctly on the server(Retrieve on server)
3) Ensure your data is displayed correctly on the Client(Retrieve on Client)
That should hopefully resolve your problem. The Globalisation guide as mentione dearlier is your place of reference

Oracle 10G support for both Cyrillic and Western European Character Sets

Our DB currently supports western EU characters sets but we need to also support Russian Characters.
Is there a common character set for both? or some trick that does the job?

Problem connecting developer 6i with database 10g express edition

i have installed developer 6i on windows xp
then installed database 10g express edition in different folders
i am able to connect to the database 10g from the sql command line
but i cannot connect from the form builder in 6i
as soon as i try to connect the form builder shuts down
i have copied tnsnames.ora from the 10g to the 6i and it doesn't connect
does anyone know why this is happening ?
please help me solve this issue ???

Corrupt Data1.cab in Oracle Express 10g Universal for Windows

Hello Oracle Folks,
I downloaded several times Oracle Express 10g Universal for Windows (OracleXEUniv.exe) and tried to install it and I get every time the same error message: "Error 1335. The required file "Data1.cab" is corrupt and cannot be used ...". When I download the Western European Edition (OracleXE.exe) the installation works! I downloaded the file on different local disks to exclude the risk that my disk is damaged.
Can you please check if this download is sane!

The stupid installation program for your stupid database was supposed to check the version of the Operating System. Anyway how does the operating system version matter if a cab file is corrupted? which was incidently packed in that stupid download link which you have happily given to all customers all this time. I was hoping to find that since you guys are too lazy to make the installation file properly you might have atleast bothered to put up a download link for that stupid Data1.cab. But nooo... The 'stupid installation program' is indeed that - a stupid installation program. It does a certain amount of checking, but definitely not enough. In that I do agree with you. It was also released too early - basrely understands how to spell Vista.
Also, there is an assumption by Oracle that the person downloading reads the documentation, especially the installation guide, that is available at the same location as the download. It is amazing and extremely disappointing to note how many people will not even attempt to look at the link.
The real sad part for me is that I frequently download software (and did again in this case) to verify that the user has a legitimate complaint. The 'data1.cab' that I received was not corrupt. Therefore I conclude the original poster made some huge assumption that is likely invalid. Now, I did install into an XP machine, and that could make a difference.
As for the 'you guys' statement - perhaps you should take that up with Oracle or an Oracle employee. Directing at me is an unsubstantiated assumption on your part. <g>

Yup. You could easily go there. Shows yet another assumption. (In fact, my company is centered around Linux and Oracle. And I have made a conscious decision, based on 3 decades of experience, to toss MySQL and stick with Oracle. And now that Sun, which owns MySQL, seems to be on the auction block, the future of MySQL is definitely up in the air.)
However, given how many assumptions you make and how valid they are, you may find it easier to stick with MySQL. Oracle Express edition potentially could save huge buckets of time and effort in the long run, but it does require reading, research and other skills to get up to speed.
Now, as to your problem
1) This is not the forum to discuss issues with installation. (If the problem is traced to the download source, then this is the right spot.)
2) There is a dedicated forum for Oracle Database 10g Release 2 Express Edition (Oracle Database Express Edition (XE)
3) You are absolutely correct that the installer should be smart enough to check the OS. It does not.
4) Since it does not, and since there are differences, knowing which version AND edition of Windows (or which Linux distro and release) is critical to troubleshooting.
