Universal vs PowerPC

Hi all,
I have a bit of a puzzle here. Why would my Quark 7 application show up as a PowerPC app (looking at the Get Info dialog) on my Mac Pro running Leopard?
I have the same setup on another machine but there it shows as Universal (as it should).
The only difference between the two machines is that Leopard came pre-installed on the "correct" machine and a result of an upgrade on the "faulty" one.
This would not bother me so much but seeing how slllloooooooooow Quark runs on that "faulty" machine, I can't help thinking that Quark in running in Rosetta.
Anything I can do to fix this short of re-installing the OS?
TIA

Hi Stefan,
Just to make this clearer. This "faulty" machine was running Tiger on Intel prior to the upgrade to Leopard. Quark was (I believe) running on Intel prior to the Leopard upgrade as well.
We have just re-installed Quark after upgrading to Leopard and as for your last question, the "open in Rosetta" check box is not even present in the Get Info dialog because the OS thinks this is a PowerPC app, hence the rub.
I have noticed this "behaviour" as well in the past where a Universal build would show up as PowerPC or an application would not be showing anything at all.
TIA

  • Installing Universal over PowerPC

I just got my "crossgrade" in from Apple and want to install it on my new machine. When I transferred the stuff from my Power Mac G5 FCP and all related programs came with.
How should I go about installing the crossgrade?
I did some searching on the forums and most say to do a fresh reinstall. Wipe the drive by overwriting with zeros and then installing it all from scratch. Well hello?!? What is the point of transferring all my info from a previous Mac if I just have to wipe it off anyway?
How do I do it without have to reinstall every program on my Mac and OSX?

    Nick...
We usually do a fresh install because 1) we were told by someone we respected once that that's what needs to be done... 2) we had issues once with doing a overwrite install and figured they came about because we didn't do a fresh install... 3) people who normally migrate machines do so as home units and don't have the same requirements of programs WORKING as we do... 4) because we know it will work.
    Or some variation of those.
Listen. You might not have issues with doing an 'overwrite' (for lack of a better term) -- but why press it?
When I migrate I just add a new drive and start from there. Anything that I might need on the old drive is still there for me to go back to and in a few months I trash that drive and make it a scratch disk. Works for me. I only wished ONCE that I hadn't trashed a drive... but I found a workaround, so I was saved.
    Good luck,

  • Can Canon 60D raw files work on Photoshop cs4, PowerPC G5?

So I recently got a Canon 60D for photo and video, but I can't seem to find a program that will read the 60D RAW files that is also compatible with PowerPC. Help! I am running photoshop CS4, the camera raw updates aren't compatible with PowerPC. The newest adobe DNG converter (6.5) isn't compatible with PowerPC, and the older DNG converter (4.4) that came with my 30D won't read 60D raw files. Is there anything that has a universal binary (PowerPC compatible) and will read 60D files? I really don't want to have to take my photos to another computer just to convert them. Thanks!

    You may be in luck:
The 60D is from late 2010 and is only supported by Camera Raw/DNG Converter 6.2 or later.
According to this page, 6.4 was the last version to run on a PowerPC:

  • Search settings - default to current folder and "file name" ?

99.9% of the time, when I enter something in the search bar of the Finder window, what I want to do is:
    1. search is the folder that I'm in
    2. search for the "file name", and
    3. then sort the results by "date modified".
    Currently, problem is:
    1. I can only change the search area (which defalts to "This Mac") after the search has begun.
    2. Likewise, the default is "content"
    3. There's not even an OPTION for "date modified". The "Last Opened" option is rarely useful.
    Please help!
    Thanks

The only one who can help us is Apple. Obviously you find this just as ridiculous as everyone else does who actually uses their computer to do things.
While I usually think this kind of sweeping generalization is unjustified, here I do not. Spotlight has great potential, but "ridiculous" describes the implementation perfectly. I'm not terribly upset by the default to search "This Mac" -- it really isn't much of a hassle to have to click the folder button -- but the loss of the ability to choose any folder or group of folders is exactly the kind of "regressive functionality" that should have people flooding feedback with complaints.
Just as ridiculous is the inability to show & sort on any of the metadata columns a normal Finder window offers. And if "Last Opened" is so useful in searches that it is the (unchangeable) default, why isn't it available in any other Finder view?
Plus, does anybody really understand how the "File Name" option works? It rarely seems to make a difference -- I often enter a search phrase, look at the results, then switch to the File Name option & still see files that clearly do not have the search phrase or any part of it in their names.
More: Try a search on Kind "Other" & enter the "Kind" info from a file's Get Info Box. Try "Application (Classic)" & note that it finds any you might have. But try "Application (Universal)" or "Application (PowerPC)" & you get ... nothing. Try just "Application (" & you get all apps. Try "Classic" & once again, any Classic apps show up, but try "Universal" or "PowerPC" & you get nothing. It's the same with many other file kinds -- sometimes the "Get Info" file kind string or some part of it works, sometimes not. Worse, the same is true for the "Kind" info taken directly from Finder windows. Try entering "Plain Text" in the Kind-Other search. I have hundreds of these but the search turns up exactly one, & it isn't even in my Documents folder.
(Before anybody suggests it, yes I have rebuilt the Spotlight index repeatedly, using both the Privacy pane method & Terminal commands, & it makes no difference.)
The point is not to rant but to demonstrate how poorly thought out & unreliable the app remains. I feel the problems are so obvious & widespread that we should not have to use the feedback page to tell Apple about them, but apparently we do. It really is as if it was designed by people that don't have a clue about what a search engine should do or how to integrate it into a user friendly environment.

  • My  24" iMac can't update to 10.7

hey guys i have a a problem, hope you can help me.
My  24" iMac (2007) can't update to 10.7. everytime i start the download, there comes this pop up saying missing data in the package. Is my iMac too old for lion or is can the problem be the store ?
p.s. : sry for my bad english with german grammar

Yes you are fine to upgrade.
Just to mention - Lion does not run any older PowerPC apps. To find out which won't run, go to Apple Menu-> About this Mac -> Software -> Applications -> at the top of the window that opens look at the column "Kind." Your apps will either be Intel, Universal, or PowerPC. None of your PowerPC apps will run if you upgrade to Lion. You will have to buy upgraded versions, if they are available for Lion.

  • Sync My Intel Imac and Powerbook

This may have been asked before...however:
I have a Imac intel at home and on the road I use the powerbook. Is there any application that will let me keep both the powerbook HD and the IMAC HD in sync COMPLETELY.
Ie at the end of the day attach the powerbook to the Imac with a firewire cable and the application then looks at changes on both and updates both machines to be in sync....
However sometimes the files on the Imac will have been updated and then Imac then needs to update the files on the powerbook...
Might not be such a application in existence.......Hope I explained it alright.
    Cheers
    D.

    Thanks for the info!
    I'll try them out.
Out of interest would this work: If I do a complete clone of my Intel Imac onto my Powerbook G4 will this work?
What I mean is there is nothing on the Intel Imac that will not run on the Powerbook application wise because they are universal or powerpc programs?
    Have I got that right?
    Cheers

This error message prompted me to delete the "prokit" file & reinstall the crossgrade. I have tried it, but alas nothing. However, if you check "Run under Rosetta" it will work and I cannot tell if it is emulated, seems like it is. Can someone who has a working Final Cut Pro 5.1 (Universal) application check the following file and tell me if it says PowerPC or Universal?:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Prokit.framework/Version/a/Prokit (right click and get info on "Prokit")
The weird thing is, my file says PowerPC and if you delete it and reinstall it will put the same PowerPC "Prokit" file. So I downloaded Pacifist to explore the new universal DVD's I was just sent, and if you search for prokit, you will find it uder the ProAppRuntime.pkg file. Then I extract that file to get info on it, and it says PowerPC as well, huh? Anyway, if someone can tell me if they have "Prokit" as Universal then it would seem I need that version. But this doesn't make any sense.
    Thanks for the help.
    Travis

    FYI
Problem solved, although very unorthodox. I found a friend with an Intel iMac, but didn't have FCP. But he did have Aperture, figured it was worth a shot and searched his machine for the file in question "Prokit" and sure enough it was Universal not PowerPC. I copied the file, which was 1-2 mb, to my machine and voila' all the proapps now open and run very fast.
I'm not sure why this happened to my machine, nor why a reinstall of the UB FCS didn't work.

  • Having trouble installing iMovie HD on a new Mac with Mavericks

I am having trouble installing iMovie HD on a new Mac with Mavericks.
I know that iMovie HD works with Mavericks because we are using it on other Macs successfully.   However, those machines were upgraded starting with OS 10.6.   In other words, iMovie HD was installed on these Macs when the Macs had Snow Leopard.
When I use the iLife 06 disc, I am presented with “You can't open the application “iLife 06” because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."
I understand that iMovie HD  is universal, not PowerPC.  How can I get past this to install iMovie HD.
    Thanks

    OK, I made some progress.
I used Pacifist (Shareware) to open the iMovie HD 6 install packages from the iLife '06 installer DVD (iMovie.pkg and iMovieThemes_Tiger.pkg) and let Pacifist install them to the right places.
But doesn't iMovie HD 6 require QuickTime 7 to work ?

  • Bizarre app behavior after waking from Sleep Mode

My iMac Core Duo runs like a top. It is fast and quiet. I have no problems with applications, both Universal and PowerPC. I maintain it with everything that I suggest others do in posts.
But, there is this one strange quirkiness that I have put off mentioning because I kept hoping that each new OS X update would address the issue. It has to do with waking my Mac from sleep mode with it logged into my user account. Not every time, but most of the time, if I put my Mac to sleep or it goes to sleep from inactivity while it is logged into my user account, I experience strange application behaviors upon waking.
For example, upon awaking Mail.app will contact my .Mac account and download any new mail that has arrived. But, if I try to open any of this mail, instead of opening, Mail.app will open a new outgoing email addressed to whomever sent me the mail I tried to open. Quitting and restarting does not solve this problem. Other apps demonstrate similar bizarre behavior. To only way to solve the issue is to log out and back into my user account.
However, if I log out of my user account and then put the Mac to sleep from the Login Manager I don't experience this issue. So at night I always log out before putting the Mac to sleep.
Anyone else experiencing similar issues? Any ideas on solving this? Do you think it is a bug in Universal Mac OS X?

Sorry this isn't a solution, rather is a commiseration. Often after my iMac wakes from sleep mode it refuses to see my internet connection. I have to unplug and reset my DSL modem to force the computer to see that it exists.
It sounds like the problem might be related, does anyone have any brilliant suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Lonnie

  • CS4 plugin not loaded

Since CS4, I get a notice that a few plugins aren't being loaded and I
checked the system log, but it doesn't tell me which ones are not compatible
or not loaded... Anyway to tell which ones are not?
    Jeff

Locate the plug-in in the Finder, highlight its icon and do a Get Info (Command+I). The Info box should tell you whether it's a Universal or PowerPC plug-in. PowerPC plug-ins will only run if you can run Photoshop in Rosetta emulation. Universal plug-in run native on MacIntel machines.

  • IMovie 4 on an intel

I have a 35 minute iMovie project that I tried to export/share as a .mov file. The settings for video quality were "high", the key frame number was set at "24", and the size was "640 x 480 VGA". There were no transitions, just one title frame, no filtering, and no imported audio.
It seems to be taking for ever to finish exporting. Since I clicked on the "share" button the "time remaining" number in the progress window just keeps climbing. As I write it is at "433 minutes remaining" and it has been running for over two hours. I can understand that iMovie may take some time to finish, but I am starting to think something is wrong. Does it have anything to do with the fact that it is iMovie 4 on a mac mini intel 1.8ghz? (It has 1 gig of RAM)
Or, does anyone have a suggestion as to what I should do to get the final movie at the settings stated above in a timely fashion? It would be much appreciated.

having just gotten a mac pro... i've exported a few movies. as it gets to the end of the export the colored ball starts spinning, but after a while I figured the export must be done. I could open the movie in QT player... so i just hit the cancel button. nothing happened however, so I had to force quit iMovie. The export came out fine, though. May not apply to you, though.
some people here will know whether iMovie 4 is a universal app or not. if it's not, iMovie has to go through code translation to work on an intel Mac. If you want to find out, go to your apps folder, and highlight iMovie, and do command-I or 'get info' from the file menu. it'll say universal or PowerPC next to the application name.
6 hours seems a bit long... but with the PowerPC app, 1.8 processor, and not too much ram... maybe.
Most of us have been doing the overnight thing with DVD burning for while, though.

  • Application closes when clicked

I have recently installed Football Manager 2007 on my Macbook Pro (running Lion 10.7.5). When I try and open the program, it closes without any explanation. Loading or open, clicking on the icon closes it! What is going on there? I know that FM2007 was made for PowerPC macs, will that make a difference? thanks

I decided to check the program in System Information/Software/Applications, and it's listed as Universal, not PowerPC...I thought Universal was supposed to run post-Snow Leopard?

  • Anime Studio for iBook G4?

I would like to know what kind of anime studios can I by for my daughter's iBook G4?

    Hello,
Depends on which version of the iBook your daughter owns. On the iBook if you go to the apple logo and then to 'about this mac' it will tell you what processor, Mac OS X and memory it has.
The system requirements for Animie Studios Debut and Pro for Mac is:
Macintosh: Mac OS X 10.5 or higher (Universal Binary) PowerPC G4/G5 Processor, 500 MHz or above (Intel recommended). 540 MB free hard drive space; 256 MB RAM; 1024x768 resolution; 16-bit color display; CD-ROM drive (for physical version of application); Adobe® Flash® Player 9 or newer (embedded library); Internet connection for Content Paradise.
A later iBook G4 with 1GHz and above, running Mac OS X 10.5. With a extra 512 Meg of memory installed should be fine running this software.
For further information on Animie Studios go to:

    Hope this helps
