Universe Designer from SAP-BW

Hi all,
I've a big doubt I'd like to solve.
I use Designer ver. 12.1 to create an Universe from a BW OLAP Query and I'm noted on my Designer is disabilited every Edit Select Statement dialog box, and every Edit Where Clause dialog box of the objects Properties.
Is this normal situation for an UD based on SAP-BW, or is my UD version limited?
Thanks in advance.
Claudia

  • Universe design for SAP BPC (MSAS cube)

    During the designing of a Universe on top of a MSAS cube there is the moment I may select Dimensions & Hierarchies. Here there are ID's of my model, e.g. Accounts-Lev1, Time-Lev1, etc.
    How do I get to see the descriptions of the levels in the Universe Designer?
    Screenshots:
    http://s772.photobucket.com/albums/yy7/Thijxx/

    Hi SR,
      In some way is true what you think, is important to put effort and intelligence in design very well the Bex query also the BW solution.
      But the effort is not only there, you can improve that with a good Universe creating MDX Measures, changing the BW names (Dimensions and measures) for other more comprehensives for the users, change and reorder the classes and dimensions to be more close to user concept, create new hierarchies and others.
      Don't forget that the Universe is a semantic layer to hide complexity and is useful for:
    -  Map complex data into familiar business terms such as products, customers, and sales.
    -  Enable simple, intuitive, and self-guided data analysis.
    -  Guarantee single version of the truth (identical results) no matter what tool is used)
    Some tips are:
    You do not need a BE query for every report and you do not need a Universe for every existing BE query
    Focus the implementation strategy on limiting the number of Bex queries and Universes that share common elements
    Build a small set of Bex queries focusing on sharing common elements in a small number of Universes
    Understand that primarily the WebI Query Panel definition influences how much data is retrieved from BW, and not the BE query design or the WebI Report layout, In some situations extremely large queries and universes can adversely affect performance
    Removing / Hide Unnecessary u201CL00u201D Objects
    Removing / Hide Unused or Redundant Detail Objects
    Remove all prefixes « Lxx ». Copy the initial name in the Description of the object
    Rename the attributes (Detail objects) when necessary : remove the suffixes when no Business signification
    Optimizing Detail Object Syntax
    I hope this help you.
      Best Regards

  • How to design a optimized universe from SAP BEx queries

    Hi Team,
                  I would like to know some of the queries :
    1.How can you design a optimized universe from SAP BEx queries in the sense which gives you more performance
    2.What are the differences between Non SAP sources like Oracle,SQL and SAP sources in designing the Universe.
    3.Can we create a Derived table from an SAP source because i know that the Schema is not created for BEx queries,cubes.
    4.What are the advantages of having oracle as a source then SAP source.
    Can you please elobarate the above queries.
    Regards,
    Pradeep P.

    Hi,
    1. Check Ingos Blog on SDN ther are some PDF for performance regarding WebI on BW
    2. On RDBMS Source you have to design your universe. On OLAP Source like BW you generate the Universe and cant customize it a lot.
    4. Good question. In a BW all your logic is already in place. On a RDBMS you have to build your logic in a universe. But there are a lot of differences.

  • Designer Connection from SAP R3

    Today it is possible to have connection from Designer to SAP R3, if possible I can send documentation about this issue is very important to our company know of their viability.
    I appreciate your help.
    Greetings

    Hi Ingo;
    We have SAP R/3 system running on Oracle Database. What I would like to ask is, is it possible to connect directly to the oracle to build a universe using R/3 tables in Oracle?
    Thanks in advance

  • Using hierarchies from SAP BW BEx Query in BO Universe

    Hello,
    I'm trying to use a hierarchy (e.g. a simple customer class hierarchy) which is a part of a BEx Query in a BO Universe. But until now I have not found a way to get a hierarchy from a BEx Query working in a BO Unvierse.
    1. Is it generally possible to use hierarchies in BEx Queries with a BO universe? (at the moment I can see all characteristics and keyfigures from the query... but I can't see the hierarchy levels for the characteristic)
    2. If 1) is possible: I want to use a hierachy variable to select a hierarchy depnding on the user who is using a report... that's not a problem in BEx. But: Is it possible to use this query/scenario with a BO universe? Does the BO universe update itself automatically if the hierarchy has changed in a BEx query?
    I've tried it with SAP BW 3.5 and SAP BI 7.0. BO Release is XI 3.0. Unfortunatelly without result.
    Regards,
    Thorsten

    Hi Thorsten,
    1) Hierarchies are mapped in the same way as custom-made universe hierarchies. When a hierarchy is defined on a characteristic in the BW Query, Designer creates one hierarchical structure in the universe, with a subclass for each level in the hierarchy. The structure depends on the current BW Query definition.
    2) If the number of levels in a hierarchy changes in the BW query, you must update the universe. In the universe connection select *Use Single Sign On when refreshing
    reports at view time* to allow the user to benefit from SAP SSO.
    Hope this helps

  • Designer hangs during universe creation against SAP BW

    Hi,
    We are trying to create OLAP universe against SAP BW 3.5 and we are running into issue wherein the designer just hangs and is not able to create the classes and objects, in most cases we have waited for about 30-35 mins and still it doesn't come back. We tried this for both against an Infocube as well as against BW query.
    I have couple of questions regarding the process flow for universe creation against SAP BW,
    Does universe stores/extracts any data from BW, like storing LOVs for the hierarchies? I know it does reads the rows, columns, free characterstics etc. in case of BW Query.
    The time to create the universe depends on what factors, size of the cube or amount of metadata? The customer is concerned regarding what is the guideline on how much time would this process take when the universe comes back with the classes and objects. If there is any such guideline, what is it?
    Any response on this is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Amit Banavalikar

    I had similar problems, setting the "Connection timeout" on the SAP/BW connection within Designer (default 10 minutes) from 10 min. to 60 or 120. ALSO: uncheck the universe limits on "number of rows (5000)" and "query duration (10 min)".
    This solved the problem.
    The connection timeout which is set directly on the SAP-BW connection in designer seems to be used in a wrong way. The definition of the "close connection after xx minutes" means that the connction should be closed after xx minutes of  not being used by any process.
    With SAP BW the connection seems to be closed regardless of it's use after the specified time period.

    Walter

  • SAP BO universe design tool

    Hi Experts,
    I am new to SAP universe design tool. Please any one tell me difference b/w Alias and context and when these concepts we implement.
    Thanks
    Poorna

    Hi Poorna,
    A context is required if you have more than one route to a table, this would be because you can join to it from more than one table.
    If you really do need the table to be joined twice, from different routes, you can create a copy of the table - an alias - and re-route one of the joins to this.  Doing this eliminates the need for contexts.
    This copy, or alias exists at the BO level and doesn't physically create a copy on your database,  it serves to modify the sql that is generated

  • Report from SAP Query due by universe

    Guys,
    I create universe based on SAP Query.
    Now I want to build BO report.
    So I connect a Universe drag to window my objects, but when I push Run Query I receive error:
    A database error ocured.
    The database error text is:
    The MDX query SELECT  { [Measures].[D4M5A7PITT7CVVVC8GMZS6QIH] }  ON COLUMNS , NON EMPTY [WLENTITY].[LEVEL01].MEMBERS ON ROWS FROM [Z_ROSDOB/REP_20081202071548]  failed to execute with the error See RFC trace file or SAP system log for more details. (WIS 10901)
    I can easily build reports based on other queries or cubes.

    Hi Roman,
    This is normally a connection issue when connecting to RDBMS rather than infocubes. a couple of questions
    Is you universe set up to pass through the authentication or is it using a specific logon?
    Does the user running the report have the appropriate responsiblities to run the query?
    Regards

  • Problem with Variable imported from SAP in universe

    I am using BO XI R3 with SAP based OLAP Universe.
    I am using a BEx query with a variable to create the universe.
    While using the variable in WebI report, the prompt comes but it has no effect in the report. I have noticed that if I select any measure object in the WebI query, then the prompt is working fine. But If I select dimension objects only, then the filter doesn't work.
    I need to see some dimensions only in the report based on the filter prompt. Is there any specific way to achieve that without selecting a measure object in the WebI query panel ?
    I can delete the filter object in the universe and create my own. But why the filter imported from SAP is malfunctioning ?

    Let me elaborate the problem.
    I am using BEx query (version 7) to build the universe.
    In the BEx query, I have one characteristic "Cons Area" in Rows and one key figure "No of Records" in Columns. In the Characteristic Restrictions, I have one variable B_AREA on Cons Area.
    In my universe, by default, I have :
    1. One dimension object L01 Cons Area for the characteristic Cons Area.
    2. One measure object No of Records for the key figure.
    3. Two LOVs LovB_AREA and LovB_AREABase as hidden dimension objects.
    4. One hidden filter object under class Cons Area for the variable. "Use filter as mandatory in query" checkbox is checked and "Apply on universe" is selected.
    The formula of the objects are as below:
    L01 Cons Area : [0BCS_AREA].[LEVEL01]
    No of Records:     [Measures].[D6UXU0FKYVITGHUL4JRNT6XRH]
    LovB_AREA :     [!V000001].[NAME]
    LovB_AREABase :     [!V000001].[CAPTION]
    Filter :
    <OPTIONAL>
         <FILTER KEY="[!V000001]">
              <CONDITION OPERATORCONDITION="Between">
                   <CONSTANT TECH_NAME="@Prompt('B_AREA From','A','Cons Area\LovB_AREABase',mono,primary_key)"/>
                   <CONSTANT TECH_NAME="@Prompt('B_AREA To','A','Cons Area\LovB_AREABase',mono,primary_key)"/>
              </CONDITION>
         </FILTER>
    </OPTIONAL>
    Note : LovB_AREABase has a primary key defined on it as [!V000001].[TECH_NAME]
    Now when I am building a WebI report using this universe, If I select Cons Area Object only, then the prompt is coming but has no effect on the result. The data is not being restricted by the prompt.
    But If I select the measure object along with the dimension object in my WebI report, then the prompt is working fine.
    If I delete the filter from universe and build my own filter in WebI query panel, then it is working absolutely fine.
    I can create a filter object in universe also as below which will work.
    <OPTIONAL>
         <FILTER KEY="[0BCS_AREA].[LEVEL01]">
              <CONDITION OPERATORCONDITION="Between">
                   <CONSTANT CAPTION="@Prompt('B_AREA From','A',,mono,free)"/>
                   <CONSTANT CAPTION="@Prompt('B_AREA To','A',,mono,free)"/>
              </CONDITION>
         </FILTER>
    </OPTIONAL>
    But I want to know why the default filter is not working as expected.

  • No. of Connections needed for creating universes from SAP BEx Queries

    Hello,
    I have 8 SAP BEx queries, my task to create to universe for all of these queries. I have created a datasource connection, my question here is can I use the same connection for all the queries by changing datasource connection and selecting the new query or is it suggestable to create 8 datasource connections in universe designer??
    please let me know if you need any more info.
    Your reply is highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Naresh

    HI,
    You need to create 8 connection for 8 BW queries.There is  one to one mapping in the universe.If you change the existing connection source then it will not work for earlier query.
    Other thing you can check like you have 8 queries then instead of creating 8 universe if possible then merge some queries in the single bw query and then create universe.
    Thanks,
    Amit

  • Can BO universe design tool read from more than one data source

    Hi Experts
    can I add personal data (from excel or Text) on a designer that is connected to relational Database
    can we combine more than one universe from different data sources to do so
    Please advise
    thanks all

    Thanks for reply
    I tried the linked universe concept but it is not working when I read in this topic in the universe design tool guide it indicated that
    both universes should have the same database I cote from this book
    ("The core universe and derived universe use the same data account, or database, and the same
    RDBMS.")
    I also checked in the designer help it says the same condition
    If you have idea how to do so please send me the steps
    thanks

  • How can I access BOE Universes from SAP Portal?

    I'm trying to access an Universe on BOE server from SAP Portal.  Does anyone know if this is possible or not?  Additions, is it possible to get access to the list of universes from the portal?

    Hi Ingo,
    I think we are talking about the same KM.  Yes, I could see all folders from the BOE server inside portal KM repository.  However, I could not see any of the universes.  If I put a Webi document in one of the visible folders, then I can see the webi document.
    If it is possible, I'd prefer not to go the other route to use SDK.
    Thanks,
    Garry
