Universe or Crystal Reports???

What is preferable when we are creating reports on ECC?
Building a Universe over ECC (or) Crystal Reports??
Please help.

You cannot access all data in your SAP ERP system if you build a universe on the underlying database. Some of the data are stored in a consolidated/encoded form in the database tables and the extraction is not always trivial/possible.
For the time being the only officially supported way to report on ECC is to use Crystal Reports and the native SAP drivers (Infoset, Table/function/cluster).
There is a prototype connector that allows you to get data from ECC into the data federator and build a universe on top of that.
SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence Reporting for SAP ERP [original link is broken]
Still keep in mind that this is a prototype and not a finalized product.
As far as I know HANA is one of the solutions SAP is working on that will enable you to report on ECC data directly from the SAP BO BI tools using the new version of the universe (as delivered in XI 4.x).

My question is related to  [KBase Article ID:344488|http://technicalsupport.businessobjects.com/KanisaSupportSite/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=344488&sliceId=&dialogID=24618166&stateId=1%200%2024614949]
Article refers to: Crystal Reports XI
    Symptom
When attempting to create a connection to a universe in Crystal Reports, after clicking OK in the Database Expert Query Panel, the following error message appears:  "Logon failed".
The query is not generated. In the Universe folder of Database Expert, the following message appears: "u2026no items found".
I'm running BOE XI and Crystal Report XI R2 with MS SQL Server 2005 using ODBC.
The resolution psoted in the KBase Article ID:344488 does not resolve the issue in my case.  Does anyone have any ideas on what to look at next?

    Hello Donald,
I'll describe the process flow when Crystal Report reports off of a Universe, in hopes the info will help narrow down your issue.
When you create a Crystal Report and open an Universe, it connects to the Enterprise system and uses a Report Server on Enterprise to generate the SQL Statement.   After you create the Query in the Query Panel, and add the Query to the report, the SQL Statement is sent to the Crystal Report Designer.
The Crystal Report Designer makes a local connection to the database and sends the SQL Statement to retrieve data.
You're using ODBC connectivity.  If the defined ODBC isn't identical between the server where the Report Server is running, and the client where the Crystal Report Designer is running, then you'd get the Logon failed error.
Other than checking the drivers, I'd recommend that the ODBC connection on both server and client point to the same database, and allow use of the same database logon credentials.
    Sincerely,
    Ted Ueda

  • Universe based Crystal report date prompt appears as DateTime

I have faced this issue in all XI versions and was hoping there is a solution for this in XI 3.1 and/or Crystal 2008.
There is a date dimension in a universe which is tied to a datetime datatype on the backend SQL server field.  If a Crystal report (XI,2008) uses this date dimension as a prompt, the prompt created in Crystal report is of type Date Time and therefore when the report is ran, the required syntax for this prompt is with timestamp.  There was a fix for a similar issue in XI R2 Fix Pack 3.3 by creating a useDateInsteadOfDateTime registry key and setting its value to the DSN of the ODBC based universe connection.  I could never get that to work by the way.
Any ideas on how to change the prompt data type to Date without the timestamp in XI 3.1 and Crystal 2008 reports?
    Thanks.

    Hi Farhan Jaffery
Have you tried to change the object defination in universe level and crate a prompt and check.
Also try to use Add Command to retrive the database field with only date and create a prompt.

  • CDZHome Error when trying to connect universe from Crystal Reports XI R2

I am getting the below error message when I am trying to connect a universe from Cyrstal Reports.
CDZHome not found on server, IRAPPS437.WebIntelligenceProcessingServer
    I am using below versions:
Universe - Business Objects XI 3.0 Enterprise Edition
Crystal Reports - Cyrstal Reports XI R2 SP4.
If you notice the error is related to Web Intelligence when I am not doing anything related to Web Intelligence. So I suspect that Cyrstal Reports XI R2 is not compatible with BO XI 3.1 or Vice Verse.
Any input on this is appreciated.
    Cheers,

Hello All, I am working on BO version migration. Presently we have BO XI 3.1 in which we have Java process through which we gets connected to BO server and generates an report.
as we need to move to migrate BO version to SAP Business Objects BI Platform 4, we need to accomodate connecting to new BO server. I have upgraded all JAR which has been given by "SAP Business Objects BI Platform 4" installation still i am getting below exceptions and one of them is almost same as this POST so thought od posting my question here rather than opening an new POST.

  • How do I build a Universe in Crystal Reports Server 2008 V1?

    Hi all,
I am new to Crystal Reports Server 2008.  In another thread, I was advised that Business Views would eventually be phased out and that I should use Universes instead.  How do I build a Universe using CRS 2008 V1?  I cannot find the executable for the Universe Builder.
    Kind regards,

  • OLAP universes and Crystal Reports

    Hi everybody,
as we know Crystal Reports can not use OLAP universes as data source. The details about that have been discussed several times in this forum, for example in the threads:
Logon failed with Universe data source
Logon failed when trying to connect to a SAP BW related universe
The possible data sources are perfectly explained in the Blog from Ingo Hilgefort.
    /people/ingo.hilgefort/blog
But... why these connection type is not possible???
From my point of view these missing functionality comes with a lot of drawbacks. The universe has a lot of advantages, and first of all it is isolating the business users form technical complexities. But if the business users can not access to the OLAP universe they have to face to technical complexities.
Another point: Consider a perfect integrated SAP BW environment with Business Objects Enterprise and Crystal and Xcelsius. The administrator can now define a perfect universe structure, tailored on the particular business needs of the end users. This universe structure can be used for Web Intelligence and Xcelsius (QaaWS). But for the Crystal Reports I have to define another interface to the BW data sources, which can not be done by the Administrator.
    So, some open questions:
    - Why is the connect to OLAP universes not possible - does that make sense?
    - Will the connectivity be available in future - is that part of the actual roadmap?
    - What is the recommanded approach for a business case as shown above, meaning how can I isolate my business users from technical complexities by using SAP BW as data source for Crystal Report.
Thank you for any comments and advises,
    Sebastian

    Hello to everybody.
When I was starting to work on the BO products I had exactly the same question.
Why were the OLAP Universes not supported in Crystal Reports?
Well, I have a few facts in my mind, I explained the decision of SAP in this case with for myself.
    1. Very simple and my first thought: monetary aspects. There excist the SAP Integration Kit. These drivers work pretty fine. So for what reason SAP should invest money in an other technique to access the SAP data?
    2. It excist a server solution for small and medium-sized companies named Crystal Reports Server. I'm not sure but I don't think this package contains the Universe Designer. If acces on SAP data over the OLAP Universes would be possible, the Crystal Reports Server customers should also get the Designer tool and the Translation tool, too. Less profit margin.
    3. Creating a Universe out of OLAP data destroys the moredimensionality. Universes are flat constructs. So maybe it makes no sense to use this meta layer.
    4. A typical Crystal Report user isn't someone who had no technical understanding. For me these users should know and understand the data source very well. So an Universe would limit there the possibilities for building a report.
    5. I think the SAP itself did not know where the journey should go with this toolset. A roudmap that changes severalt times in one year an many many rumours about these tools proof this.
So I think maybe we just have to wait a few months and the support for the OLAP Universes will come with a fix pack.   Who knows...
    Greetings,
    Sebastian

  • BOBJ Auditing - Activity Universe and Crystal Reports

Here are the user requests.  Are these possible with BOBJ Auditor? There are some sample reports in Infoview Public folders and Activity Universe connection is working.
    1. User and Group access and type of access to all folders and Crystal reports.
2.Develop a report of the inventory of all scheduled reports indicating report name, location, frequency/schedule and distribution list (include FTP / file location if not e-mail).
A monthly report would probably be sufficient and would be used to facilitate management oversight of report distribution.
3.An inventory of all reports indicating report name, location, database connection, scheduled or not scheduled, when created, when last time run, by whom
4.Automated report for failed instances - Crystal report failures within folders.  Most of the reports are run overnight
Environment: BOXI R2, Crystal Reports, Activity Universe

    Hello,
I'll attempt to answer your question. I should point out that not everything you need is an audited event. You might be better served by the Query Builder for some of your requirements.
    1. It is possible to create a list of all folders/ reports a user/group has access to. The type of access a user/group has is not audited.
    2. This is possible (more or less). You might have to move the distribution list portion to a different tab/ report.
    3. Again, I'm uncertain how much of this info is audited. Needless to say, a report that has never been run will have no audit information. Report name and location (i.e. within BOE) are audited. It doesn't look like the database connection is audited.
    4. This is possible and relatively simple.

  • Connecting to Universe from Crystal Report XI

    Hello all,
I am trying to connect to a Universe from my Crystal Report. I get an error "Service CDZHome not found" when I try to select the Universe datasource.
I read elsewhere that I will need Crystal 2008 for this. I tried this with a trial version of 2008 and it does work fine.
I came across the link below which indicates that it should work for Crystal XI also. Though there are some limitations.
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/boc/index?rid=/library/uuid/20984c2b-17f1-2b10-1091-d18977f7cd8f&overridelayout=true
We are not ready to move to Crystal 2008 yet. So I need to make it work with Crystal XI. And as per the documentation I should be able to. Any help or pointers will be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Sanjay

    1. Crystal report version - 11.0.0.2495
    2. BOE Server version - SAP BusinessObjects Edge Series 3.1  (Product: 12.1.0 © 2008 Business Objects)
    3. Tried with Sample universes (eFashion, Activity etc). Also tried with a universe based on SQLServer database. All of these work with Crystal 2008 Designer.
    4. Thru' the BOE explorer window in the Designer
    5. Its happening to all universes
    6. Unfortunately I don't have BOE installed on any other box. I am currently evaluating BOE for our organization.

  • Universe on crystal report server

    Hi guys:
i have a question, dose crystal report server 2008 support universe?
if yes, how should i install it?
if not, is any substitution? so i can use the dashboard to create some pie charts on infoview.

  • Need help Crystal Reports running in BO 4.1 while using Universe as database connection.

Sorry, I may not know how to describe this in the correct technical manner, but I'll explain in as simple terms as I can.
I open up Crystal Reports 2013 click new document
and it begins to ask for Database Expert.
I select Universes and log in to my Business Objects Enterprise Explorer.   I then select the Universe that I want to write my report with,
then i save the rpt on my local machine.
then I log into my Business Objects 4.1 CMC or BI and upload this rpt file so that I can begin to schedule the report for example...
but the problem i have is whenever I try to run the report,
it asks for a prompt for my database connection...
it displays the Universe name, but User Name Password, I am not sure what to write,
do I write My login for Business Objects?  do I write the user name password of the database that Universe uses?
in CMC I see a database configuration,  I tried many combinations and still have been receiving the following error message
The viewer could not process an event. The database logon information for this report is either incomplete or incorrect. []
    ---- Error code:0 [CRWEB00000119]
From all I read the point of using the Universe in Crystal reports is to be automatic in such a way that it doesnt need the database conneciton, because its technically using the Universe as the database connection....
so what am I doing wrong here?    maybe its my database configuration,    I keep reading that it doesnt need anything...   that you upload the Crystal Reports and it would just work...
any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated..
    thanks
    -Daniel

    Hi Daniel,
What is the reporting DB used?
The trick with your configuration is the following:
    - Universe Designer: 32bits application that may work fine on your desktop
    - Crystal 2013: 32bits application as well
    - When you export to the repository, Web Intelligence (64bits) has to process the Universe to extract the query.
Your server should have the drivers required for Crystal + Universe: 32bit and 64bit versions.

  • Crystal Report with Universe instead of Business Views: Any limitations ?

    Hi,
We were using Crystal Reports on top of Business Views  until now. Due to considerable post-migration work with Crystal Reports on top of Business Views we are thinking of switching to Crystal Reports  on top of Universe.
Can anybody explain me whether there is any drawback while using *Universe with Crystal Reports* instead of Business Views with Crystal Reports.
Please consider the following pointswhile giving an evaluation -
       Dynamic parameter
    (ii)  LOV creation and maintainence
    (iii) Maintaining order of parameters
(iv) Updating Universe/Business View level changes in Report (Verify database)
    (v) Report performance
    Your advice/views is appreciated.
    Regards,
    Neonevin

    Here are my views..
Yes, you can create crystal reports on top of universes. But there is one major drawback using universe. You can connect to only one database at a time. But in Business View you can connect to multiple databases. If you are ok with this, you can absolutely go for universes.
Dynamic parameter  --- Yes its possible
(ii) LOV creation and maintainence  --- Whatever the LOVs you  have in universe, you can use the same. And also you can use LOVs created in Business Views  while creating reports on top of universes. Any how please check. not very sure about it.
(iii) Maintaining order of parameters --- Yes, the order of parameters can be managerd using universe designer itself.
(iv) Updating Universe/Business View level changes in Report (Verify database) -- No need of updates required to be done in report. There are few changes which can happen for universe. Seemlessly you don't need to do anything to reports. Unless you delete some objects in universe.
    (v) Report performance -- Never checked in this perspective. Performance should be fine.

  • Crystal Reports and Universe Connection (Access DB)

    Hi,
I am trying to use a universe as a data source for Crystal Reports 2008. The universe is defined on a simple relational Access DB table (.mdb file which resides on the server). After selecting the universe as data source, I can select measures and attributes from it, but after clicking "ok" I am getting the error "Fehler bei Anmeldung." ("Logon failed.").
Please note that although I am connecting to a relational (not OLAP!) DB, SAP-Note
" 1363326 - Error: Logon failed on Crystal Report conecting to OLAP Universe."
describes exactly the error I am facing (except that this note is for OLAP universes).
The universe works fine if I use it in WebI as data soruce.
Which universes can Crystal Reports 2008 actually use in general?
Are there any special restrictions for the data model?
    Thanks for your help!

Make sure that the Access DB is accessible also from the local workstation the CR Designer is installed on.
In fact I would recommend to setup your universe connection to you the generic ODBC driver and setup a system DSN for accessing the DB once on your BO server and once on your client. Make sure to use the same DSN name in both cases.

  • Universe based on SAP BW in Crystal Reports

    Hello everybody.
    Yesterday I've visited the CeBIT.
Here I've talked to other colleges working on BO issues.
We're using the Version BO Enterprise XI 3.0. In this version it is not possible to use Universes in Crystal Reports 2008 that base on SAP BW content.
A college showed me Polestar XI 3.1.
I've asked him if this problem from above is solved in the XI 3.1 version of BO.
    He did not know exactly.
So could someone tell me, if it is possible in BO Enterprise XI 3.1 to use Universes in Crystal Reports that  were build on SAP BW content?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi everybody,
we are discussing about that fact in another thread.
I would appreciate if you join the discussion under:

  • Connecting Crystal Reports to unicerse

I am trying to connect to a SAP universe through Crystal Reports 2008.
The connection to the universe is made and all the universes in the
    repository are seen.
But when objects are selected to form a query it shows a error message
    called 'logon failed'
I am able to connect to the inbuilt universes provided to us by default. The error shows up only when connection is made to our universes.
The universe is gets its data from oracle database.

  • Single Crystal Report based on Five different SAP BEx Quries.

    Hi,
I need to create 5 different Charts (in a single report)  based on five different SAP BW BEx Queries. These are charts with 3- axes i.e. X,Y,Z.
The example requirement is to create Line charts (Vertical Mixed Line Charts) and deatils are as follows: The chart should show CPU Utilization % for different servers (eg. Servers1,2,3,4,5) for each day in a particular month.
    Axes details:
    X- Axis - Date eg: 01 /09/2010 to 30/09/2010
    Y-Axis - CPU Utilisation Percent
    Z-Axis - Servers from 1 to 5
The above detailed chart comes from a BEx Query . In this way there are four more BEx queries which should give four other charts.
    My queries are:
    1. Is this possible to create a single report using five different BEx queries and Create 5 different charts(one chart from each BEx Query) in a single tab as in the current manual report.(All the five Line charts should be downloadable to a single sheet in Excel)
    2. One more, should I use Crystal Reports only? The charts are of high format natute so Web Intelligence will not produce the same.  Is any other tool that helps for this requirement.
    3. I can create five different Universes based on BEx Queries. Is this possible to create a single report from five different Universes.
    Please advise.
    Nanda Kishore.
Edited by: Nanda Kishore B on Oct 21, 2010 8:05 AM

To start with you cannot use SAP BW universes in Crystal Reports., YOu have to use the BW MDX driver.
For performance reasons I would suggest to add 4 subreports into your main reports containing each on of the 4 remaining charts.
