Unix Command to Move Folders back into Directory

As you can see from my previous thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3138884?tstart=0
I ended up reinstalling Mac OS X 10.6.0 after using "mkdir" and "mv" Unix commands to move my old files to a "previous" folder and I'm still trying to access my account because it's Vile Vault protected. I wish I knew how to move my old folders out from previous into /volumes/macintosh\ HD
Basically it looks like this right now
~/Volumes/Macintosh/HD\ Previous (I'm not even sure if that's written the right way
I need to move all of the folders out from Previous into ~/Volumes/Macintosh\ HD and deleting the existing ones in it.
All I want to do is have my old Kernel Panic back because I know how to fix it now.
Thank you very much!

I don't have this problem at all, and I can't make any suggestions on how to fix it.  Maybe you should post a separate thread in the Using the Forums Forum.
So in the end I went against your advice and moved Applications and Users back to their original folder in HD and I logged in just fine! Well, I did have to boot into single user mode to restore Admin Privileges by creating a new account and then changing Privileges. Some programs didn't start up but it's okay, I know which ones rely on System and whatnot but at least I have nearly everything in its original place and I can back it all up.
Ahh, you're made of sterner stuff than me !
Best Buy has $99 1TB WD Passport SE's (The USB 3.0 Version actually!) so I grabbed one immediately and set up Time Machine.
Sounds like a good choice.
Seriously, what other way can you ensure that your data is safe without using File Vault? I use Truecrypt for some things that I don't access much, but daily operations? I'd rather just put up with the sluggish performance of FV!
I think it depends on what level of security you need. Do you routinely have files that simply must not be read by a third party if your computer gets stolen?
FV has always struck me as a hammer to crack a nut, and if something goes wrong you can't even take the disk to a data recovery specialist to get your information back.
On occasions when I have data that must be kept secure I use Disk Utility to set up an encrypted sparse bundle, which I keep on the desktop. When I need to access files in the bundle then I double click on it and enter the password to mount it.  A minor problem with this is that TM will copy across the whole sparse bundle even if just one file on it is edited. Even so, it's not really a problem since TM is working in the background.
Thank you for all your help Bob!
You're most welcome

  • Move files back into TimeMachine backupdb

    Running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8
    Stupid me, I hit cmd-delete by habit on a folder whithin the Backups.backupdb/computername folder on my TimeMachine backup drive. One of the "yyyy-mm-dd-hhmmss" folder was moved to the Trash.
    I managed to move the folder back into the Backups.backupdb folder, but canot move it into the folder for computername. I cannot gain access to do this from the Finder even with the root user account. I know there are ACL protection and FLAGS on these directories. But I cannot change them, probably due to an inheritance problem somewhere. BTW I don't have fsaclctl, so can't stop ACL if it's already running.
    Does anybody know the correct hierachy and order to change the ACL/FLAGS/POSIX permissions to put the folder back into place?
    The folder is for a backup from a computer that I no longer own. Backups are no longer made to the folder under computername. I know I can retreive those files with the "Browse other TimeMachine disks" option, so it's not a big problem if they stay where they are. Just OCD.

    +"When i check the files on my computer it is still there, yet it is not in the library."+
    Putting the files on your computer does not cause them to be added to the library. To add them, use the command File > Add Folder to Library, and point it to My Music or whatever folder(s) all the music is in.

  • How do I move photos back into my library?

    At some point int the past, I managed (and I have no recolection how) to move some of the photos in my iPhoto library out of the library itself and onto an external drive.  That is to say, the photo is part of the iPhoto library and available to view/edit, however the actual file does not reside on my internal hard disk in Pictures/iPhoto Library but on an external drive.
    This was fine when I was using a desktop PC but on my laptop, it meands that some photos are unavailable to me when travelling as I do not have the external drive connected.
    Is there an easy way to get the jpg files back into the iPhoto Library?  I do not want to reimport them as the photos are already registered in the library, tagged and part of albums, and I do not want to have to recreate this work.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    thanks

    How are you at hacking SQL databases?
    You've run a Referenced Library and you're trying to convert it to a Managed Library. In earlier versions this was quite straightforward as the relationship between iPhoto and the Referenced Images was done with aliases. Threfore to change all you needed to do was replace the alias with the image.
    Not any more.
    Now the app tracks the relationship directly in the database. As you have the files on one disk and the library on anotherm, the only way to get this to work is to hack the db to link the new locations of the file.

  • How do I move music back into iTunes?

    I've tried a couple of third party programs that move your music from your ipod back into itunes. However, none of them seem to keep your playlists and the order that the music was listed intact. This is driving me nuts since I have almost 5000 songs and my old hard drive died. I do not want to have to buy all of the music again and spend days importing CD's. I'm also holding off on buying a new iPod until I can get this resolved since I don't want to start from square one.
    If anyone knows of any utilities that can preserve my playlists and keep the play order intact (I have some books on tape and other things where play order is important) would love to hear from you. Thanks!!!!

    The following utilities claim to be able to restore counts, ratings and playlists, although I haven't tried them myself and they are not free. No doubt there are others that could be found with google.

  • My computer is down, can I import my web folders back into iweb

    I downloaded my index.html and the folder with all the content in it back to my desktop on another computer. How can I get my iweb site back up on line in Iweb 08 using these two folders. I don't have a copy of my domain sites files. Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Unfortunately no. iWeb does not have the capability of importing previously published files. However, Chapter 2.3 of the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing image, audio and/or video files in the published site in the reconstruction of the site.
    Might be time to consider a backup strategy and an external HD. At the very least you could use a flash drive and backup the domain file there after each use along with some other of your most important files.

  • How to move mail from library back into inbox?

    I mistakenly selected 'rebuild' and 6 months worth of mail disappeared from my 'inbox.' I did find it in the library~mail~mailboxes~POP~Inbox~Messages. My question is - How do I move it back into my inbox? I'm nervous I might lose something in the process...

    laurasackett, the mail in the inbox for my POP account resides in this location:

  • Call an interactive UNIX command from java

    Hi,
    I want to call a UNIX command from java. When issue the command 'htpasswd -c filename username' on UNIX terminal, it asks for the new password and the then confirmation password again (yeah, unfortunately the htpasswd installed on our system does not allow you proivde the password on the command line. So have to work interactively ). Now, I have written a simple java program RunCommand.java. I am hardcoding the password for the htpasswd command in the file (in the real situation, password will be generated dynamically). I want to issue 'java RunCommand' on the UNIX command line and get back the command prompt without being asked for the password twice. The code is below, but the Outputstream does not work as expected. It always asks for inputs. Any idea? Many thanks.
    import java.io.*;
    public class RunCommand {
    public static void main(String args[]) throws Exception {
    String s = null;
    try {
    String cmd = "htpasswd -c filename username ";
    // run a Unix command
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd);
    BufferedReader stdInput = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(p.getInputStream()));
    BufferedReader stdError = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(p.getErrorStream()));
    OutputStream stdOut = p.getOutputStream();
    String pswd = "mypassword";
    while ((s = stdInput.readLine()) != null) {
         s = stdInput.readLine();
         stdOut.write(pswd.getBytes());
         stdOut.flush();
    System.out.println("Here is the standard error of the command (if any):\n");
    while ((s = stdError.readLine()) != null) {
    System.out.println(s);
    stdOut.close();
    stdInput.close();
    stdError.close();
    System.exit(0);
    catch (IOException e) {
    System.out.println("exceptions caught: ");
    e.printStackTrace();
    System.exit(-1);

    There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
    Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • How to move folders from one server to another serve using unix command

    not a regular file .. what it meansProbably you have some fifo (named pipe) files...
    Said that this has nothing to do with database (you should post on some nix forum, for example http://forums.oracle.com/forums/forum.jspa?forumID=135), you may try rsync* command (man rsync).

  • What's the right way to move folders into a new library ?

    I'm going to transfer my photos from PC to iMac using USB flash drive. I organized all the folders with files on the PC's desktop, some by year, others by themes.
    I'll transfer folder by folder.
    With each transfer I'll go to iPhoto and will create a NEW Library and then "import" this folder ?
    Is that a correct procedure ?
    If not, please what are the steps ?
    Here is from Apple's support page, and it's confusing:
    Do not copy or move pictures directly into the iPhoto Library folder as they will not appear as an option in iPhoto when attempting to import.<<<<</div>
    What does it mean ?
    FROM APPLE:
    =======
    Notes on importing from other sources
    ========================
    Each imported item, whether a single photo or an entire disk will appear as a separate film roll. Command-clicking on multiple items during an import will result in them all appearing on the same film roll.
    If importing files from a local hard drive, see technical document 61015: "iPhoto: About Importing Pictures From Hard Disk and Available Space"
    Processed photos that are offered for download from an Internet site must first be downloaded to a local drive before they can be imported into iPhoto.
    Do not copy or move pictures directly into the iPhoto Library folder as they will not appear as an option in iPhoto when attempting to import.<</div>
    Thank you very much!

    Sophie:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You're only hope to recover the library as it once was is to: 1 - if you have a backup copy of your iPhoto Library or 2 - you can put everything back exactly the way it was in the Finder.
    Otherwise you'll have to start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your current library as follows:
    Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
    Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    Open the library package like this.
    Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
    This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

    Hi Toolshed4,
    > I assume the permissions change when the file
    is copied through the Finder.
       When a new file is created, even by copying, I believe that the new permissions are determined by the system umask, so I would expect a file to have permissions of 644. I think that ownership is determined by the creating process and the group is inherited from the parent directory. On the other hand, if the file is moved (instead of copied) within a volume, permissions shouldn't change.
    > Do I need to become the root user to do this?
       I can't answer any questions about permissions without knowing what they are. The following command has a few options selected that should provide all of the permissions related information of which the ls command is capable of getting.
    ls -leoR /<Path>/<to>/<Script>
    If instead of a script the above path points to a directory, the above listing will descend into subdirectories recursively, thanks to the "-R" option. The man page for "ls" will describe the other options I've selected.
