Unix command to put a mac to sleep

Hello, Is there a way to ssh into a mac and put it to sleep now (pmset or reboot are where I looked first). I suppose I could pmset to sleep in a minute, but I don't want to have to remember to change it back to a reasonable value once it wakes up again...

Michael,

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is Apple doc.#303698 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit. If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
Also, here is Apple doc.#305262 about PCI cards and sleep.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
Tristan Currier noticed this; "I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
    Check the printer queue!"

  • Airport loses connection after I put my mac to sleep.

After Everytime I put my mac to sleep, My airport seems to turn itself off and will not turn back on untill I restart. Then, the Icon that shows my airport connections turns into an arrow poining up. What does that arrow mean and how do I keep it from happening?

Same thing here... on my Titanium Powerbook. I am trying to figure out if it was after I updated to 10.4.4. No problem on my G5. I am going to try installing 10.4.4 again.

  • I just purchased a new airport extreme 802.11ac I set it up and runs fine when i put my mac to sleep i come back and it can not find my airport i have to restart

I PURCHASED THE NEW AIRPORT EXTREME 802.11AC I SET IT UP AFTER I PUT MY MAC TO SLEEP I COME BACK AND IT SAYS CAN NOT FIND AIRPORT EXTREME I HAVE TO RESTART AND IT FINDS IT.

Try the following, in order, until (hopefully) resolved:
    1a. Delete Preferred Network(s)
    System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi tab
Under "Preferred Networks," delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list.
    1b. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
In the windows on the left side: Select login for Keychains and "All Items" for Category.
Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
    1c. Add Preferred Network(s)
    System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi tab
Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
Restart or log out then back in.
    2. Move System Configuration Files
(Note: You will have to reestablish your network connections settings.)
    Go to /Library/Preferences
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to the desktop.
Restart your Mac. (Note: OS X will rebuild the files that are now sitting on your desktop. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can move the folder back to it's original location.)

... does my iMac model... support Hibernatemode 3 alias "Safe Sleep" to protect my Mac against damages due to power outage?
You can set hibernate mode to 3, but it seems to me its only benefit could be if power were to be lost after the iMac was already sleeping. Sleepimage is written to disk prior to system sleep. If your iMac lost power while it was "awake" you would certainly lose any unsaved work no matter what hibernate mode you choose.
The problem is that an iMac without power no longer sleeps, it's dead. Upon restoring power you need to cold boot, and I seriously doubt sleepimage can be forced to load in that event. Sleepimage is loaded upon wake from "safe sleep", not from boot as far as I know.
It is simple enough for you to try, so go ahead and see if it does what you want. Other than creating a 16 GB sleepimage file it did not appear to do anything beneficial on the iMac I am using though (a later model).
    The file location is /private/var/vm/sleepimage
Configure hibernatemode, verify the file is created, do some work on your Mac, don't save it to disk (and don't use Pages or similar app that saves work on its own), let it sleep, then pull the plug. I think you will see what I mean.

  • Why does Firefox 8 hang every time I put my Mac to sleep?

I recently switched to Firefox 8 on Mac OS v10.6.8. If I put my laptop to sleep with Firefox running, when I open the computer again Firefox hangs. It's unresponsive to any mouseclicks or keystrokes.
I can force-quit Firefox and reopen it again, but it's annoying. I'm running on a new Macbook Pro, 2.3 GHz Intel core i7 with 8 GB RAM.

The work offline thing doesn't help.
There's a possibly related tab issue--sometimes if you push ctrl+t to open a new tab after waking from sleep mode, it'll open a blank tab and let you type in the URL bar, but it won't actually show a new tab in your tab bar. It's like a phantom tab or something. If you try to switch tabs, that's when it hangs. It also doesn't load the page fully, especially if there's flash content.
Other times, you can't even open a new "phantom tab", it won't accept any keystrokes. It seems that if you wait a couple minutes after waking from sleep and don't click anything Firefox is more likely to respond to keystrokes.
I haven't ever seen Firefox 8 behave normally after waking from sleep mode, no matter how long I wait. Firefox 7 was fine.

  • How to change delay parameter before waking, after putting the Mac to sleep

I recently bought a new fancy APS battery backup/surge protector power strip, that's supposed to switch off my peripherals after the Mac goes to sleep. (in the interest of being more green) Unfortunately, when I plug my USB speaker's power cord into one of the "master controlled" outlets on the strip, upon initiating a sleep command via pulldown menu, the machine sleeps, and then wakes immediately. I've isolated the problem to the following; if I disconnect the speakers USB cable, the problem doesn't occur... the mac sleep, the peripherals shut off.
It seems that the speaker is injecting some noise into the USB port as power shuts down, that the mac seems to interpret as a USB event/wake command. Is there any way to delay the time constant between sleeping and waking? Is there some way to hold off the mac from watching the USB port after sleeping for 3 sec, 5 sec or something like that ? I'm hoping that there is a time constant I can tweek.
    Thanks for any help

First, are you referring to packages or applications because the behavior is different.
Also, why do you want it to retry a failure? It failed for a reason so you need to fix the cause of the failure first. If it failed the first, it will likely fail the next time for the same reason. In general, ConfigMgr will only retry on transient type
    errors.

  • Putting the Mac to sleep with the remote

One of the recent Mac tips involved using the remote with Keynote to put the MBP to sleep.
Well, being curious, I decided to see if it worked outside Keynote, and it does!
Just press the large round button in the center of your remote and hold it.
Within a very short time an interesting "snooze" icon appears in the center of the screen and then the MBP enters into the arms of Morpheus.
I have never seen this icon before - it is a graphic representation of the remote itself!
Pressing any button on the remote reawakens the computer.

I have been using the remote as a volume control since I got my first MBP, but I just found out about this sleep thing yesterday.
I have one of those RadioShack IR extender systems around the house so I can control my sound system and TV, but it also works with the Mac remote, so I can turn the volume up or down from another room, which is convenient when using the AirPort express WiFi unit to drive remote speakers in another room.
Now, I can remotely put the MBP to sleep.
As an interesting prank, I can take the remote with me when I visit friends with MBPs and put their computers to sleep on them, since few know that it's possible with the remote.

  • A quicker way to put the Mac to sleep?

Hi, I'm currently clicking on the Apple menu and selecting the option I want to put my iMac to sleep and I'm wondering if there is quicker way (a keyboard short-cut perhaps?) for putting it into sleep mode, to shut it down and to restart it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Andrew

Yes, the power button works fine on the iMac G5.
I've used this method on G3 systems, G4 systems, and the iMac G5.
    Nice, Fast, Instant.
    Just one button.
All you need to do is tap the power button, and the computer will go to sleep. The power light on the iMac G5 will glow on and off to indicate sleep mode.
I think this is probably the most convenient method. You only need one finger

  • Putting my Mac to Sleep actually Shuts it down!

I've had this strange issue for a while and I've checked and re-checked my "Sleep" settings.
My iMac G5 can be set to sleep buy pressing the power button on the back once or through the Apple menu in the top left. But either of these ways, shuts my mac down and not to sleep?
If I set my mac to sleep after a period of time say "1 hour" in system preferences it does sleep, but the white light on the front no longer "pulsates"
    Any one got any ideas?

I'm sorry to hear that didn't work. When you press the power button do you get a popup giving you a choice of Sleep, Restart, or Shut Down, or does it just go off? If the latter, you may want to try resetting the SMU & Open Firmware.
This article describes resetting the SMU on an iMac G5: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733
After resetting the SMU, reset Open Firmware by turning on the machine & immediately pressing CmdOption+OF and holding them down until you get a black screen with some text. At the prompt, enter (without quotes) "reset-nvram", then press Return. It should say OK and go to the next line. Now enter "reset-all"; when you press Return, the machine will restart. (FYI... this only resets hardware settings & has no effect on your data.)

  • Kindle putting my Mac to sleep.

So today I just realised that when I put the top part of my kindle near the headphone output/over the fn, ctrl, alt and cmd keys, my mac does into sleep mode. I tried it multiple times, and holding my kindle in multiple ways. But it only reacts when I put the top of the kindle where the speakers are, near that part of my mac. The kindle doesn't even have to be touching the keys for it to go into sleep mode, so it's not like I'm touching anything that's doing so.
Does anyone know what this comes of?

I'm sorry to hear that didn't work. When you press the power button do you get a popup giving you a choice of Sleep, Restart, or Shut Down, or does it just go off? If the latter, you may want to try resetting the SMU & Open Firmware.
