Unix Darwin program problem stuck in!

When I turn on my computer it runs in Unix mode and i cannot get out it back to Mac OSX. I have tried typing "reboot" but all it say is "operation not permitted". As far as I can tell the osx software is running fine because it shows it loading from startup but then goes directly to Unix Darwin. I must admit I have no knowledge of how to use this program and can't exit to regular mac. Any help to resolve this problem will be greatly apreciated. Thanks, Matt

I was starting to have that same problem, among others. The culprit was that there was a capital letter contained in my "Short Name", but I swear I didn't put it there.
Now, if you could open Disk Utility somehow (perhaps using the OSX boot disk?), you could open System Preferences/Accounts, and you'll either be able to see or create a new account for yourself. Inside the same window pane, on the right, you fill in a name, and the computer should automatically generate a Short Name under that. It is mandatory that the Short Name be all in lower case letters, and it can simply be your first name. Upper case letters used in the Short Name are not permitted in Unix, and your computer will think you're always trying to log into an alternate account that doesn't exist (or something like that). 10.5.3 can't turn off my mac and programs get stuck

I've installed the latest OS X Leopard update (10.5.3) and since then I'm having serious problems with my Macbook Pro. The iMac of my girlfriend has the update as well but everything is working fine there.
Problem 1: Can't turn off my mac
When I want to turn off my mac I end up with my background and a little spinning wheel. This goes on forever, it seems my mac gets stuck at that point.
Problem 2: Programs get stuck
Since 10.5.3 programs get stuck much faster and when they do Force Quit doesn't work anymore. The program gets stuck and restarting the program can't be done.
Affected programs: Mail, Safari, Camino, NewsFire, Dock
Does anyone has the same problems or does anyone knows what's going on?

HI Guust - yeah having a similar problem with an application freezing, although it is just Photoshop CS2 and I can force quite after 2 goes though!! I hope you get a result from this forum - I have been a mac user for 12 years plus and yes there were always problems with updates but never quite as dramatic as this and there were normally fairly easy solutions!

Java Programming Problem

Hi all,
I was looking for this java programming problem which had to do with a large building and there was some gallons of water involved in it too somehow and we had to figure out the height of the buiding using java. This problem is also in one of the java books and I really need to find out all details about this problem and the solution. NEED HELP!!

Yes, it will. The water will drain from the bottom of
the tank until the pressure from the water inside the
tank equals the pressure from the pipe. In other
words, without a pump, the water will drain out until
there is the same amount of water in the tank as in
the pipe The water pressure depends on the depth of the water, not the volume. So once the depth of the water inside the pipe reaches the same depth as the water inside the tank it will stop flowing. This will never be above the height of the tank.
I found this applet which demonstrates our problem. If you run it you can drag the guy up to the top, when water in his hose reaches the level of the water in the tank it will stop flowing out.

Calling unix file program stored in server directory

Hi ,
I need to run a unix batch program stored on the server directory from an ABAP program. The unix batch program is a script program that will perform encryption on the file. I'm using SAP 4.6c running on Windows NT.
I need to maintain External OS Cmd in SM69 to start this .BAT file. Does anyone know what should i fill in Operating System Command and Parameters for operating system command?

Why not we try the other way round,
1) Store the PDF file from the server into SAP internal table by using GUI_UPLOAD with file type as BIN
this will upload the PDF stored in the Binary content, Now there are many FM to convert the BIN data and now store the exact data into an internal table and then convert the internal table to spool
2) Get a third party software to convert the pdf to text file, store it in SAP and convert to spool
Please revert for any further clarification or comments.

Try to quit iPhoto from the Home Screen - the recent app section.:
Double click the Home button to reveal the recently used apps.
Then tap and hold on the iphoto for ios icon until it wiggles. It will show a "minus" sign in the corner.
Now tap the minus sign to quit the app.
Click the screen above the row of recent apps to return it to normal.
Now restart iPhoto and see if it back to normal.

Coldfusion server problem or programming problem?

I have been experiencing problems when accessing this website using Mac (and Parallels/WinXP).

Because there is no problem when using Windows PC, the programmer suggested that it might be a CF server problem, but one of my IT said it's programming issue (basically he said the web programmer is wrong). Just tested in Mac, the site works in FireFox. But Safari won't load it at all. Progress bar keep spinning but screen doesn't change.
So is this something to do with the programming problem or Safari is being picky? I can use FireFox during presentation but I'd like the option to be able to use Safari (iPad?).

it's not precise for me , It needs a lot of details but according to the existing information
Now we have 3 options
Option1 : Get the transfer_fees according to AREA_CODE -- i don't know how not clear for me
Option 2 : IF transfer_fees IS NULL then get it's value from up_area_code (then i am assuming that up_area_code has a value currently during the user input so all we have is to think that we can get it's value from a simple assign statement in WHEN-VALIDATE-ITEM trigger of transfer_fees item as ...
IF :transfer_fees IS NULL THEN

Shut down and reboot your iOS (press and hold the wake/sleep button and when prompted, slide to poweroff and then press and hold the wake/sleep button to reboot).
Go look what had happen with your apps. Maybe it's ok. If not, tap and hold its icon and then tap the X to delete it from your iOS device and redownload it from the app store (no charge for that).

OSystem Program Problem Detected Window, asks if I want to report this, then it asks for my Password ? is this ok ?

I'm new to Ubuntu & Linuz OS. I've started to see a pop-up window that says: System Program Problem Detected- Do you want to report the problem. When I click yes, I'm asked to enter my password to access problem reports of system programs. Should I be asked for my password ???

I am fairly new to Ubuntu, but that does not sound unexpected. Ubuntu tends to have everyone use a limited account that needs to ask for a password before carrying out operations like installing software.

Sometime ago i was using logic pro 7,and saving my project folders on an external drive,,,all of my folders turned into EXE files and couldnt be read,,
Now ive wiped my internal drive,,reloaded the install disks,,used disk warrior,

A Programming Problem I am stuck on

I am trying to solve the following problem:
Given a deck of nCards unique cards, cut the deck iCut cards from top and perform a perfect shuffle. A perfect shuffle begins by putting down the bottom card from the top portion of the deck followed by the bottom card from the bottom portion of the deck followed by the next card from the top portion, etc., alternating cards until one portion is used up. The remaining cards go on top. The problem is to find the number of perfect shuffles required to return the deck to its original order. Your function should be declared as:

So my code, which is pasted below, is a brute force method of solving the problem in that I am passing the entire array symbolizing a unique deck, to a shuffles function then using for loops to shuffle the deck and pass back the array and use for loops again to check if it matches the original deck. My code works for smaller cases but the (1002,101) case, is taking way too long and there is a solution that can solve the problem within a few minutes, I just need to figure it out.
I am thinking rather than passing the entire array, perhaps i need to pass by reference to my shuffles function and use pointers to manipulate just one array and then use a for loop to check it. However, I am also trying to think of other reasons my code is too slow.
Any help is really appreciated.

Download file from UNIX to EXCEL problem

I am trying to download file from UNIX server to excel file, there is one column which is messing up and that is number 100000000000000002 (18 in length) it is writing as 1E+17, funny thing is when I click on that cell it is showing as
100000000000000000.
I am using GUI_DOWNLOAD to download to excel, below is the output excel format, I am talking about 4th value from left

It is not the problem of your program. This happens becuase of the "nature" of the excel. You need to retain the text property of that column.
Try like this:
1. Download the file in .txt
2. Open Excel .. blank sheet
3. Now, click on Open. Select your .txt file
4. One pop up will come ..."Text Import Wizard"
5. Select the fixed width or Delimited ... Press Next ...
6. Select appropriate delimitors or fixed length .. press Next
7. Select your coulumn (which has the problem), Select the "Text" radiobutton on the upper-right corner and finish.

Employee payroll program problems

I have done good so far but now im stuck and lost on how to take my program to the next step, kids got sick and i missed like a week of school so im behind. I am suppose to modify the Payroll Program so that it uses a class to store and retrieve the employee?s name, the hourly rate, and the number of hours worked. Use a constructor to initialize the employee information, and a method within that class to calculate the weekly pay. Once stop is entered as the employee name, the application should terminate. I am lost on the bold part..

OSX Darwin Scripting problems

Im sure this is a pretty easy question, but Ive had some problems writing a script for the Unix environment on my Mac. I eventually want to write a script so that when a user logs in via ssh they are directed to a directory other than their home and some aliases get set up etc. Unfortunately I cant even get a basic script to change directory to work. My file shows as follows:

cd ..
There is a directory for it to go to, but it wont go up one directory. I had also tried to get it to direct to the specific directory that I want it to. I dont know why this wont work and Im sure its something stupid, but I couldnt figure it out.
I did have a script work that I found in an online tutorial that looks like the following:

osascript -e 'tell application "Finder"' -e "activate" -e "display dialog \"hello\"" -e 'end tell'
I dont know if there is something I am missing about that script that I dont have in my script (I tried adding "osascript" to mine but it didnt help). Again, Im sure its a stupid question but I have been having trouble with it. Thanks to anyone who helps with this.

With the old HP, when a user would connect via ssh, the shell would automatically run the user's .login file, which was modified to direct the user to a directory other than their own, set up some aliases to be used by the user for running some scripts, and would set paths for various things such as IDL etc. For example it would set "alias sim /codes/scripts/SIM" in a script and then the user would later be able to just type "sim" to run the script SIM.
In Darwin I havent been able to do that because, as you said before, the aliases are only around for as long as the script is running. I can modify the ~/.ssh/rc file to get the script to run on login just fine, I just cant get the effects to exist outside the scripts process space
Again, sorry to keep going on and on with this question, and Im sure Im explaining things you already understand perfectly well, I just want to be sure to explain what we are doing as best I can.
