UNIX DNS Migration to Windows AD DNS
Hello,
We are planning to Upgrade our AD before that our Root Domain DNS including _msdcs is on Solaris Bind.
We need to Migrate _msdcs, root DNS to Windows based AD integrated DNS. we have already added both Zones as secondary into Windows DNS where AD is configured. Now We need to make transferred _msdcs and root DNS zone as primary and Windows DNS
should transfer update to Solaris DNS
what changes/configuration we need to do before making those Zone as primary? do we need to change SOA or anything
Also, we have other zones in Solaris for those domain we are not using any Active directory. those domain zones also we added into Windows DNS, for those zone what changes/configuration required to make primary and transfer update to solaris DNS till
we remove all Solaris DNS IP from Servers side?
Here also do we need to change SOA or anything?
Is there any complete migration steps or video?

Swapnil

Hi,
Maybe i am missinterpreting your post, but If you have an AD environment set you already had _msdcs zone as AD integrated, when you created the first domain controller assuming this is 2008 or later OS. Along with this zone you have the AD domain zone
which is as well AD integated. So i am not sure how you can get same zone as AD-integrated again since AD will complain the zones(s) already exist.
I have done migration from Linux bind to Windows but not for other directory service integrated zone and the process was like you mentioned by seconding teh zones in windows then make them primary and ad-integrated and secondary on linux.
I believe you will have to export or make an inventiory of the 2 zones and then create any missing / required records.
Maybe others have better suggestions.
Hope it helps.

Calin

Windows server 2012 as primary DC and DNS server and windows server 2003 as secondary DC and DNS
Migration from windows server 2003 AD DC and DNS server to windows server 2012 R2,
Cannot I set up Windows server 2012 R2 as primary DC and DNS , windows server 2003 as secondary DC and DNS ? (for backup server when server 2012 fail, user can continue to login and access internet services)You can mix both as long as your Forest and Domain Functional level are Windows Server 2003. However, I would like to bring your attention to this blog about known problems when mixing DCs with Windows Server 2003 and 2012 R2 OS:

DNS problem on WIndows Server 2008 R2
Dear All
I have windows 2008 R2 Server which is a DOmain Controller for a Domain. It is also DNS server.
We are using Class A ip addresses for the private LAN behind a firewall.
The DC & DNS Server has IP address of 80.5.0.1. The CLient machines in the network has WinXP & WIN7. They have gateway address of Firewall LAN port. And the above DC/DNS Server address as primary DNS. The secondary DNS is the ISP provided DNS
Server IP Address.
The issue is sometimes the clients are not able to resolve the DC/DNS IP address. If you do nslookup on the client the DC IP is resolved to another server on the internet. It should actually return the Local DC name & address.
ANy suggestions?
From : shekhar-nskGateway : 192.168.1.1 ( or it should be 192.168.1.100-Firewall IP ?)--Pls clarify this point.
It definately should not be server IP, If firewall is also doing routing then yes gateway should be address of firewall.
Primary DNS : 192.168.1.1( My DC& DNS Server)
Correct
Alternate DNS : ( None)
127.0.0.1
FOrwarders : as given above ( Google's Open DNS Addresses)
Correct
In short all DNS queries from Windows Clients should go to local DC & DNS server. & from there is should go out .
Correct again.

Hello!
I've a big problem with this MP. When the zone monitoring is enabled (by default) the MonitoringHost.exe takes up all the CPU. I've put the zones in Maintenance mode.
I've got this problem only with a new Windows 2012 R2 server. Other Windows Servers (2003 R2, 2008 & 2008 R2) with DNS Server Role they don't have this problem.
Any ideas?
Thank you!
The configuration is:
SCOM 2012 R2
Microsoft Windows Server DNS Monitoring v7.1.10100.0 Management Pack
DNS Management Pack Action Account has been configured
"Act as proxy..." is enabled
The monitored server config:
Windows Server 2012 R2 (standalone)
DNS Server Role installed
DNS Management Pack Action Account is a member of the "Administrators" group
The only events I've are the following but I'm not sure if they're related (because of the ...DNSSEC...):

Windows 2008 DNS & DHCP configuration steps for 11gR2 GI install with GNS
Hi,
I have windows 2008 R2 server with DNS & DHCP services installed. I am planning to install 2 node RAC with GNS option.
The problem is i could not find any document to setup the windows 2008 DNS server for the below steps.
a. Configure GNS VIP : add a name resolution entry in a DNS for the GNS virtual IP address in the forward Lookup file.
gns-server IN A <virtual_IP>
where gns-server is the GNS virtual IP address given during grid installation.
b. Configure the GNS sub-domain delegation: add an entry in the DNS to establish DNS Lookup that directs the DNS resolution of a GNS subdomain to the cluster.
clusterdomain.example.com. NS gns-server.example.com.
where clusterdomain.example.com is the GNS subdomain (provided during grid installation) that you
delegate and gns-server.clustername.com resolves to GNS virtual IP address.
I am aware that this configuration steps has to be taken care by the System administrator. Here is what he tried and the results.
My SA was able to Configure GNS VIP in the DNS and the Nslookup works fine for this.
When he Configures the GNS sub-domain delegation the nslookup fails when trying to resolve the SCAN name.
Any step by step tutorial for this windows 2008 DNS & DHCP configuration for Oracle GNS setup would be highly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ashok Kumar.GHi Guys,
Any help on this request will be very helpful.

ABAP Adaption while migrating from Windows to Unix
Dear All,
I am working on a project where SAP system has been migrating from Windows to Unix os. Because of this all ABAP which are using Files, Operating system command has to be adapted as well.
How can I get such a list of ABAP objects which will be affected by this migration.
Example I can look for Dataset command, External OS Commands and so on..
Please advice if there is a straight forward way to get such a list?
Your prompt response would be higly appreciated.
Thanks in Advance

You need to visit URL - System Copy and Migration
Also refer to SAP note 547314, and the System Copy Guide for your SAP
release on SAP Service Marketplace :

hi,
im doing dns migration from one set of servers to other set of servers.
dns takes about 24 hrs for TLDs(com. etc) zones and about 48 to 72 hrs for gTLDs(co.uk etc.). to avoid any kind of outage during this time - can I leave both servers as authoratative servers? will it avoid any kinda outage?Hi,
If I understand your question accuratly then the answer is yes. As long as the cached records will resolve you should have no issue. Once expired you can safely decomission the original set of nameservers.

I am a unix / solaris dba. My IT director wants to migrate to Windows based so they can hire more database operators familiar with windows.
In my city there is a shortage of really good unix people.

DB2 Migration from Windows - Linux supported with Backup/Restore ?
Hi folks,
we have to do a DB2 V9.1 migration from Windows -> Linux. Both servers are Intel based. Is it official supported by SAP to do this without SAP migration tools? E.g. with a backup/restore or redirected restore? I heard about it, but i'm not sure.
Thanks a lot
Jochen
Edited by: Jochen Raab on Mar 1, 2010 5:40 PMHi Jochen,
Please have a look at the DB2 docu.
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/db2luw/v9r7/topic/com.ibm.db2.luw.admin.ha.doc/doc/c0005960.html
It clearly stats that Linux and Windows are not compatible.
DB2® database systems support some backup and restore operations between different operating systems and hardware platforms.
The supported platforms for DB2 backup and restore operations can be grouped into one of three families:
Big-endian Linux® and UNIX®
Little-endian Linux and UNIX
Windows®
A database backup from one platform family can only be restored on any system within the same platform family. For Windows operating systems, you can restore a database created on DB2 Universal Database (UDB) V8 on a DB2 Version 9 database system. For Linux and UNIX operating systems, as long as the endianness (big endian or little endian) of the backup and restore platforms is the same, you can restore backups that were produced on DB2 UDB V8 on DB2 Version 9.
So you need to do an eport/import.

Can I associate a ip dns view and/or ip dns view-group to a specific int ?
is there a way to bind/associate a ip dns view and/or ip dns view-group to a specific interface so I can end with something like:
interface FastEthernet0/0 description Inside
interface FastEthernet0/1 description OutsideISP#1 ... want associated to dnsViewISP1
interface FastEthernet0/2 description OutsideISP#2 ... want associated to dnsViewISP2
ip dns view dnsViewISP1
domain name-server n.n.n.11
domain name-server n.n.n.12
domain name-server interface FastEthernet0/1
domain resolver source-interface FastEthernet0/0
ip dns view dnsViewISP2
domain name-server n.n.n.21
domain name-server n.n.n.22
domain name-server interface FastEthernet0/2
domain resolver source-interface FastEthernet0/0
ip dns view-list dnsViewListISP1
view dnsViewISP1 1
restrict source access-group aclDNS
ip dns view-list dnsViewListISP2
view dnsViewISP1 2
restrict source access-group aclDNS
... so traffic routed to ISP#1 use dnsViewISP1/dnsViewListISP1
... so traffic routed to ISP#2 use dnsViewISP2/dnsViewListISP2
I can set ip dns server view-group dnsViewListISP1 or dnsViewListISP2 but not both
Router is acting as caching server with ip dns server enabled
IOS 12.4.15T.9So after a couple of hours of playing around and testing I've finally found the correct settings to achieve this, I wasn't able to find the configuration options through the Windows Airport Utility client but borrow a MacBook Air from a family member and was able to find it:
1. Open the AirPort Utility on a Mac computer.
2. Click on your AirPort Device, then click "Edit".
3. Select the "Internet" tab.
4. Now in the "Domain Name" section type "yourhostname.ddns.net" or it could be "yourhostname.no-ip.com" or whatever other hostname No-IP.com may have assigned you.
5. Now click the "Internet Options" button.
6. At the bottom of the windows that opened tick the check box "Use dynamic global hostname"
7. In the "Hostname" section fill it with "no-ip.ddns"
8. In the "User" & "Password" sections fill it with the username and password that you chose when creating your "No-IP.com" account.
9. Now click "Save" which will save the settings and click "Update" to update the Airport device which will also restart it.
And you're done!
Please note that it does sometimes take up to 5 to 10 minutes to update the DNS settings to No-IP.com, which caused me to think it wasn't working initially.
Good luck! -

Best Regards, -
Hello all,
I am new to ThinApp and working as a consultant to help a company migrate older Windows 2003 software to Windows 2012. They have purchased ThinApp 5.0.4.5 so that is what we will be using.
We have created a clean 2003 VM and did a pre-scan
We loaded the application and configured it and then did a capture.
We then tested the capture the 2003 VM and it works
We then loaded the capture on a Clean 2003 VM and it works
We then loaded onto a 2012 VM and when running the app from a command window get an error -missing import shell32.dll:StrCpyNW
If we run the capture in Emulation Mode on 2012 VM, we do not get the Shell32.dll error but instead the cmd fails with a Fault Module Name - NTDLL.DLL error
I am sure I am just missing the correct location to identify or configure the capture - but do not have the experience to know where yet. (Taking training next week).
Until then, is there any suggestions which I can try?
Thanks for your time in advance,
VinceTried and done that. The main issue while configuring the printer from the printer Web Interface is that there is no access to the Digital Sending section due to a problem with the "Sun Java plug in" I think the code mentions 1.31. or similar.
We downloaded the java plug in and installed it. No progress.
We reset the printer to defaults and reconfigured it .. It sees the smtp gateway and access it but fails sending email with scanned documents..
We have tried in very different ways. We connected the printer to another domain SBS server 2003 and it works beautifully. So, I have no idea on what is the problem. We created a firewall exception for ports 390. 1783 from the SBS to the Printer
and still no go..
We have tried four different accounts and nothing. Same results as stated originally.
Any other suggestions??

ADPrep Migration from Windows Server 2003 to 2012 Foundation Server fails with error 0x80004005
Hi all,
Having a problem the forums and Google have been unsuccessful in helping me with. Server is Windows 2003 R2, migrating to Windows Server 2012 foundation. Have tried the AD Migration on the new 2012 Foundation server both as a standalone server
and a domain server member before running the migration. I get the following error:
ADPrep execution failed --> System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception (0x80004005): A device attached to the system is not functioning
I've checked the ADprep logs and have found the following:

Consultant | Nerd | Visionary. http://www.ethertech.com.au/ | http://www.deeperstates.com.auHi Biswajit et. al., thanks for your help thus far, it is greatly appreciated...
Unfortunately I had already disabled the NIC's on both hosts. They currently remain disabled. I've just tried turning off IPv6 as well and no luck.
PortQry came back fine (I think) :)

Problems after print server migration to Windows Server 2008 R2
Hi all,
New forum member, first time poster. I am at my wits end and have concussion from banging my head on the desk for several days running. Hopefully someone here may be able to help.
Environment
I have recently moved our printing environment from a Windows Server 2003 machine to a new Server 2008 R2 machine in prep for rolling out Windows 7 x64 clients. We have 30-40 printers, majority of which are HP's (M2727's, P4015dn's, CM3530's, P2035's & a CM8060).
My procedure for setting up the printers on the new server involved manually creating each printer and using up-to-date drivers, we wanted to start fresh. The HP's are all using the HP Universal PCL 5 or PCL 6 (61.115.1.10527) x86 & x64 driver. We use Desktop Authority on logon to install the required printers for each client.
Problems
Since everyone is now running through the 2008 R2 server we have had a bunch of intermittent problems pop up all over the place, mostly with our HP printers. When using the PCL6 driver some applications print a page or 10 of garbled gibberish (wingdings etc), so most printers are now using the PCL5 driver. Other applications print the error "PCL XL error" when using PCL6. Sometimes reinstalling the printer on the client machine will resolve these errors, however they tend to resurface.
When we use the PCL5 driver our M2727's intermittently report "Out Of Memory" on the printer display (they are stock with 64M RAM each) - upgrading the RAM may fix this but we never had this problem before on the 2003 server. This problem is not specific to the size of the printed document - it could be a 20 page report or a 2 page excel document. Resetting the printer will generally clear this issue temporarily. This is currently our most annoying/biggest issue.
Some people are having issues printing to a FujiXerox 340A-AP printer - in particular 1 person is able to print fine, where as another prints and the print margin appears to be far too small. After confirming all print margins on the server then reinstalling the printer on the client machine, the problem still persists. We have two FujiXerox printers, the second one is working as intended for 8-10 users with the exact same settings.
Attempted Fixes
These are some of the attempted fixes that I have tried:
Turning it off and on
Upgrading the firmware on the M2727's to resolve garbled printing & out of memory
Upgrading the firmware on the CM3530's to resolve garbled printing
Reinstalling all HP Universal PCL5/PCL6 x86 & x64 drivers on the print server
Ensuring that the 2008 R2 server is 100% up-to-date with MS patches
Backing up all printers on print server, removing the print server role, deleting all printers & drivers, rebooting, reinstalling the print server role and restoring all printers from backup
Upgraded Desktop Authority to the latest version - as this application is in charge of installing the printers on logon
As you can see we are having a lot of problems and nothing seems to make any sense. None of this happened before Windows Server 2008 R2 was brought in to the equation.
If anyone is able to provide any assistance that would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Hartz.

DNS in DHCP Pool (Internal DNS issue)
I know that we can setup multiple DNS server under DHCP pool. But I like to make sure the order.
I have multiple branch offices.
Let us say that Branch 1 office has a router with 10.30.1.1 as default gateway.
Our internal DNS is 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 as Pri and Sec.
My order of DNS server is like below.
1. gateway
2. internal DNS
3. public DNS provided by ISP
I saw couple of issues that when I put internal DNS first. Particular situation is when IPsec is not working, users could not access internet through domain name because they had internal DNS which is not reachable.
But, when gateway is first order, I am not sure whether user are able to access internal website because gateway DNS doesn't have internal DNS records.
So, my question is that. what should be the best order for DNS setup under DHCP among default gateway, internal DNS and public DNS? Our current setup doesn't have even gateway address, it only has internal DNS addresses only.
ip dhcp pool ccp-pool1
network 10.30.1.0 255.255.255.0
domain-name test.org
default-router 10.30.1.1
netbios-name-server 10.30.1.1
dns-server 10.30.1.1 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.2 24.25.5.60Thank you, Richard.
You are right. when I setup router IP for DNS server in DHCP pool. it did not work.
Let me ask regarding external DNS forwarding.
I like to know the process of exteranl DNS.
User --> Internal website --> OK with internal DNS
User --> External website --> Internal DNS forwarding to External DNS
We have our own external DNS (ns), in this case, if external DNS (ns) is down, every branch users are not able to resolve any external IP because internal DNS can't get reply from external DNS?
2nd question)
IPsec is split-tunneled, but in this case, every DNS request goes internal DNS which is located in HQ and goes back through IPsec? Usually Split tunnel doesn't go internet traffic through IPsec but internet directly.
3rd Question)
what is for ip name-server x.x.x.x when I setup ip name-server 8.8.8.8 and I tried to ping 8.8.8.8 from router, it didn't work. Am i missing something?
