Unix flavor with oracle

Hi,
currently our databasese are on AIX, but we plan to purchase new sever of unix except IBM.so colud you please tell en which unix flavor is more compatible with oracle sun solaris or HP unix and we also need list of SAN configuration. thanks a lot in advacne.

Hello,
In our firm we use HP-UX Itanium so, I can tell you that we experienced several bugs with this platform.
Not Oracle bug but hardware and OS bugs.
About the hardware bug, I was not able to patch the database (From 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.4) I got an ORA-07445.
After calling Oracle support they quickly answered that I have to change the CPU.
And they were right. One CPU was wrong. The problem was solved after changing it.
The exact error was the following:
ORA-07445: exception encountered: core dump [pxnmove()+33] [SIGSEGV] [Address not mapped to object] [0x97FFFFFFBF3D2EF0] [] []You can have more detail on the Note ID 398526.1 of Metalink.
About the OS bug. It was about de C compiler of HP-UX Itanium.
This issue was so well known that from 10.2.0.3 Oracle delivers pre-compiled module.
You'll find more detail on the Note 386727.1 from Metalink.
Best regards,
Jean-Valentin

  • Using Unix tools with Oracle on Windows

I currently have an Oracle database installed on Windows, but would like to use Unix scripting tools and commands when connecting with my database.
Can anyone advise a good way to configure my system so that I can connect to my database from a Unix-like system?
    Thanks in advance!

If getting a unix like system installed is not feasible (or is not an option), use this:
    http://cygwin.com/
    http://www.cygwin.com/mirrors.html
This is not exactly like running unix tools against the Oracle db, but allows you access to unix type shell for almost all of your unix shell scripting needs.

  • UNIX user with Oracle software group settings

I am seeking help on this issue.
When I installed Oracle 10g on Solaris 9 sparc box, I created user oracle and assigned oracle user to primary group Oinstall and second group dba. Then installation went successful. After that, I created another user ccmm and assigned ccmm to dba group. Then I created some UNIX scripts and SQL scripts stored on system. When I log into server as ccmm user and tried to connect to Oracle database, it failed. If I log in as oracle user and tried to connect to Oracle database, everything runs fine. My purpose is to log in as ccmm user and connect to Oracle database or start Oracle utilities from there. So where is the problem for ccmm user settings? How can I make ccmm user as Oracle database user on UNIX machine? Thanks in advance.

Not sure if I quite understand what you're looking to do, but have you added the 'ccmm' user to the 'oinstall' group?
    vi /etc/group
    oinstall::101:ccmm
Don't know if that helps ya or not.

  • Installation BOBJ XI 3 on UNIX ( Sun Solaris ) with Oracle database

    Hi All,
I want to deploy and install BOBJ XI Enterprise 3.1 on Sun Solaris with oracle database.
My question is, do we need to add some oracle licenses stuff in BOBJ XI Enterprise server or we just using a connection from Sun Solaris to oracle database ?
    Pls Advise,
    Rgds,
    Denny

    Hi Denny,
the risk is the same whatever DB server you are using. Once you have a setup where more than one application access the server, overload caused by one application can influence the performance of the other ones. You have to check if your DB vendor offers tools to monitor and limit the load on your DB server. But we are talking hypothetically now. I would recommend to check what's the actual load on your oracle DB server. If the server is not working at the limit (let's over 80% all the time), then I think that you can try to install BOBJ also in an existing oracle instance on the oracle server. You can reduce the risk and make the maintenance easier if you setup a dedicated oracle instance on your DB server just for the BOBJ repository.

If you do this only for cost reasons, you should reconsider.
My guess is this is some managerial directive.I agree with you that any flavour of *nix is better than Windows, but the reality is that there might be situations where a Windows-platform is better.
If the entire server park is Windows, then the delivery will be better with a platform change. It's much likelier that the machine will stand abandoned in a corner, slowly rotting away if nobody really knows how to to manage the beast...
The world isn't black and white, and it isn't always about which is the better technical platform. If it was, the whole world would be using *nix-servers... ;-)

  • Issues with using utl_http with Oracle Wallet

    Hello Everyone,
We are experimenting with Oracle wallet and utl_http and are attempting to do an https transfer and we are facing some problems. I will appreciate your help greatly if you can advise on what could be wrong. We are on db version 10.2.0.1 and Unix HP-UX. The intention ping an https url and get a simple 200 response. Future development would include get/post XML documents from that url and other interesting stuff. I understand that utl_http with Oracle wallet can be used for this purpose.
The wallet has been created and the ewallet.p12 exists. We downloaded the SSL certificate from the url's website and uploaded into the wallet.
Everything works if I put in a url with plain http. However, it does not work with an HTTP*S* url.
With HTTPS when I run the below code I get the following error. Again, greatly appreciate your time and help because this is the first time we are using Oracle wallet manager and do not know where to go from here.

My requirement is to create and write a file (any file for eg txt file) in unix box with in a specified directory through oracle plsql code.
    Oracle sits in windows server.
using utl_file package we can create directory where oracle resides and write it there in oracle server in our case windows..

    Hello,
I want to do a system copy from SAP R/3 4.7 Enterprise 47x110 with Oracle 10.2 to a new machine with same SAP version but with oracle 11.2. (After this I will upgrade to ERP 6.0)
I will do this with export/import but I don't find any documentation (manuals or notes).
    I only find this:
    Note 1499877 - Oracle 11.2 for R/3 Enterprise 4.7 Ext. Set 1.10
but this note is only for a new installation, I don't know if this work with system copy
Note 516246 - INST- System Copy for SAP Systems based on SAP Web AS 6.20
This don't have information about oracle 11.2
I read the manual "Homogeneous and Heterogeneous System Copy for SAP® Systems Based on SAP Web Application Server 6.20" but this also don't say nothing about oracle 11.2
Can you help me? Where can I find this documentation and what DVDs (master and kernel) should I use?
    Best regards

    Hi Juan,
    Thanks for your answer.
That is my doubt, what installation master shoud I use for export oracle 10.2 and import in oracle 11.2?
Note "1499877 - Oracle 11.2 for R/3 Enterprise 4.7 Ext. Set 1.10" say that I can use installation master of R/3 4.7 Set 2 (47x200) to install a new system.
    I found this media:
    51033746_9 Installation Master 6.20/6.40 Linux on x86_64 64bit
    and
    51040087_7 NW 04 SR1 Inst. Mst. Linux x86_64 64bit f. Oracle 10.2/11.2
I think this is the note that I need:

    Hello,
J would like to know if there are some differences between Oracle 8i for a UNIX Platform and Oracle 8i for a Linux Platform.
I know that there are some differences on Oracle 8i Parallel Server and i know that some products are not include like precompiler (Mod*Ada, Pro*FORTRAN) on a Linux Platform.
    Thank you.

We have installed Oracle 8i on Solaris 8 and it had a great performance, of course that the hardware and licence invested here was costed my the office where i work. Personaly i'd installed linux reh hat 8 and oracle 8i, imagine that, it could be implemented by any individual that has the time to do so.
By buyinng from a company that has a good background you could be sure that you will have support.
Bottom line, if you have the $ to buy great hardware go for a unix platform. But if you don't a Red Hat Linux Server Licence with a 1 year sopport and Oracle data base is about 3500Dls.
