UNIX ownership on portable drives

OK, I am having a pretty technical issue. At  #  level in Terminal, I am seeing the user and groups set as "unknown". Even with the power at #, I cannot change these settings using any combo of chown or chgrp that I can think of. Oddly enough, chmod works without a hitch.
Here is my situation, assuming that the OS was using UID or UUID to establish "who was really who" when it deciphers security rights for the user named "Bill" (just using myself as an example), as soon as I set up the new Mac Pro, I imediately went in and changed the UID and UUID to match those on my MacBook Pro. BTW- I have had no problems whatsoever other than I sometimes have to log in as Root to grab a file from an old TM backup...... chown/ chgrp/ and chmod have fixed every one of these issues.
Here is the reason I did this seeming crazy thing.........  I have very specific rights assigned (on the Mac Pro) to my business files and my photography files (which, being a pro who makes a living from these files, I consider my photography to be business files too!). I have full rights (7) my wife can read & execute (5), no one else has any rights at all. When I am on the road, and living off of a portable drive, I want the files I have synced to carry these same rights & limitations. As my UID and UUIDs match between the machines, I really expected the OS to say "OK, this user named Bill, who wants access to this directory, seems to be the same user, so I will let him do what he wants.".................. If groups and owners do not follow, this will never work! I expected a little bit of a challenge when I went to set everything up for the first time but I did not expect that I could not overcome my challenges when at a #!!!!!!!!!
Any ideas from UNIX gurus would be most appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Bill

etresoft,
I thank you for your tips and I thank you for your advice. We are going to need to "agree to disagree" on a couple of things here. While I will have to agree with your assertions regarding the "tinkering around" of with hidden files/DIRECTORIES is something that should be left alone by almost all users, you have not accounted for the more technical user who has a need to accomplish something specific, with the experience to be cautious and to know that he/she does run the risk of "breaking" something (one of the many needs for backups BTW).
I am NOT blowing my own horn here, this is just something to take into consideration before assuming the person on the other end is an idiot. No, I don't have a lot of points. No, I am not at a "high" level within the support community. No, I do not participate as often as I should, for the benefit of others. However, prior to ever owning my first Mac, I worked with UNIX for nearly 20 years. Mostly AIX, quite a bit of HP-UX, a little SCO, and a little with various flavours of Linux. I have been an AIX server & system (as we added more servers) administrator. Most of the time when I was not using SMIT, I was working from a "#". Now, do I know it all? God no, far from it! Am I "too good" to make mistakes? NO, in fact I have made some awful ones over the years which left no option than to restore from tape backup (or re-install AIX if that would fix the problem faster).
Now, with all of that out of the way, I switched from Windows to Mac for two reasons. #1 is reliability; no big surprise there...... #2 was the heart of that reliability, UNIX, which allowed me to do things Windows could (but OS 9 could not) and so much more. I loved it so much that I ditched all my Windows computers and have never looked back. What I have learned over the years is to be VERY careful; this includes a fresh backup prior to making any significant changes. I have also learned that pretty GUI interface for the OS, tends to work for the UNIX kernel that really runs the show. I have learned that you can take a powerful computer (say, a Mac Pro, for example) and do things on it that the best UNIX servers could only dream of 10 years ago. BTW- I ran all my proposed ideas by an Apple tech support supervisor before I even opened the box on the new workstation. He agreed with my plan on the UID and the UUID, he agreed with how I intended to bring files across from the old Time Machine backups, but he forgot to mention the ownership of files on external drives. I probably should have just tried to find the same supervisor again, but this did get me to dip my toe in the Support Community and try to assist a few others for a change.
No hard feelings.   This is probably karma somehow because I know I have taken the same line with customers and fellow users many times over the years, only to find that sometimes, they knew even more about the OS than me. In this case, I needed some pretty technical help. While I appreciate the warnings as they do help serve as a reminder as how severe the consequences could be. However, dismissing questions with an attitude of "Mac OS is not intended to work that way" or "you should never need to do that" is the whole reason jokes like "If Computers Were Beer" are created.
I have to agree with you about some of the Adobe products. For photographers, Adobe has been pretty good to us, with Photoshop, for many years, having way more power on a Mac than on a Wintel workstation. They are pretty even now, provided you make sure you go through the hassle of selecting/building a Windows workstation that has all the right "tools" for you to work at a professional level, but you can't go cheap, especially if you work in Adobe RGB and want to see the colours. In short, you might as well get a Mac
Thanks for your advice, maybe we can be of assistance each other at some point in the future. I love learning new things..........  any day I learn something new is a good day!

  • How to sync folder on Macbook pro with external portable drive

    Hello,
I am new to mac environment.  I would like to sync up my itunes library from my PC to Macbook Pro. I currently backup my itunes on PC using synctoy 2.1  to  portable drive. I am able to copy folders from portable drive onto macbook pro but would like the abililty to sync ( ie copy the delta) to save time.
    Thanks,
macbook pro - OS X Lion
    PC -XP

It depends on what they are. Generally, a Mac OS X application will have a distinctive icon; if they’re all documents(not Windows applications), double-click all of them.

  • How to export photos from iphoto'11 to portable drive for download?

I have 2 macs in different locations and a 500gb portable drive. I am about to leave one location for the second location and want to take my photos from iPhoto with me on my portable drive.
What is the best way to do this? I do have time capsule on the 1st iMac.
I use Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 for editing on my iMac. I have a backup catalog Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 and the folder 'my pictures' from my PC (on way to recycle - at last) on the portable drive.
I am not currently using organizer from Adobe Photoshop 9 -but using events from iPhoto.

    Depends on what you want
If your want your iPhoto library then drag it to the external drive - in the new location depress the option key and launch iPhoto and use the select library command to choose the library you want - the local one or the one on the EHD
If you want to merge them then use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - to merge the library on the EHD with the local library
If you want just the photos then select them and export them to the external drive and import them into the other library
Explain exactly what you want if none of these help

  • How do I move my movies from iTunes to a portable drive in oder to free up disk space?

I have less than 10% of disk space free and often receive a message that my strat up disk is nearly full.  I therefore want to free up space by moving my movies to a portable drive.  How?  I want to keep the movies on my iPad, though.

Delete them from the local computer.  Nothing gets moved.  If the content was purchased from iTunes it should be available for download again in the future.

If the device is synced with iTunes on the computer and the content is deleted from iTunes it will also be removed from the device.
Realistically, if you want to keep the content, keep it stored locally.  Purchase an external drive to store the content on.  Keep in mind that iOS devices are NOT backup devices, they merely mirror the content in the iTunes library on the computer.

  • Move or copy imovie projects to a portable drive

I want to move iMovie Projects and/or Events from one Mac to another Mac. I was told by an Apple technician that the best way is to use thumb drives, but that they need to be formatted for Mac OS, which I have done. I can see the thumb drive showing up in the Events Library, but it has a triangular yellow "warning" icon superimposed on it. No evidence of the thumb drive in the Projects library. I cannot drag and drop either events or projects into this icon, even though the Apple tech had me do that with the portable drive he had at the store. (I did not have the thumb drives with me then.) Must be doing something wrong, but what?
    Thanks!

If you right-click on your thumb drive and click Get Info, you should be able to tell how your thumb drive is formatted. You want Mac OS Extended (journaled). Fat32 will not work.

  • Time Machine no longer recognizes my WD portable drive for storage

The portable drive use to work fine for storage for my time machine. Now the drive does not show in desktop when plugged in. Time machine is directing me to set up but does not recognize any device. Thank you for any help.
    J.

Same exact thing happened to me... Time Machine ceased to recognize external drive - stopped backing up (obviously) then drive would no longer appear on desktop. After multiple reboots, plug/unplug, and cable jiggling - the drive returned to the desktop... Time Machine STILL does not see it. Using Disk Utilities to verify - hopefully repair. Many errors appearing in log! Isn't it a little odd that so many external drives of different models are all failing while using the same program... ?

  • HT202796 I can not copy, modify, any file from my Mac to external hard disk,  of the seagate brand (fast HDD Portable Drive)  I don´t know  if I need some software to copy and  modify files in my hard disk external ? Could you help me please?

    Hello I have a iMac with 3.4 GHZ intel core I7, memory 16 GB 1333 MHZ DDR3, and OS X 10.9.4 Software.
I have problems when I try to copy or modify any file from my MAC to MY PORTABLE DRIVE/DISQUE (external hard disk).
my external hard disk have the next features:
    brand: Seagate
    4TB
I do not know if I need some software such as: paragon or I need to configure my MAC,
    Please help me..
    Thanks a lot

Click on it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired, or install software such as Paragon NTFS on the computer.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; this may also happen for a flash drive which is about to fail.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

  • Disk utility fails to resize portable drive partitions with error message "requested change in size is too small".

I am using a 1TB WD studio passport portable drive with my 2011 MacBook Pro. I have the portable drive partitioned into 4 volumes: 355 GB, 320 GB, 320 GB, & 4 GB.  But Disk Utility won't allow me to split the third of those into 160 GB /160 GB.  All volumes verify as seeming "to be okay".  Seems if Disk Utility could create me a 4GB partition that 160 GB is plenty big enough, right?  Something's not right; Can you help me with this please?

What is on those partitions and or the partition you want to split in two?
If you don't have any data on partitions or if you can save it someplace else for the time being then why not just Re-Partition the whole drive into the sizes you now want.

  • If I backed up my files on external portable drive using time machine - I bought a new I-Mac - can I upload my music and photos .

Can I install mympictures and music that were back up using time machine from my McBook into my new i-Mac - the back up is on a portable drive.

    Hello:
There should be no problem - although I have never done what you describe.  Attach the drive to your new computer. open Time Machine, and retrive what you wish.

  • Running OSX and apps on a portable drive

Hi all, I share an iMac with my family and I do heavy photo editing and takes tons of pictures for a website I'm doing in iWeb.
My question is how to save hard drive space? I cannot figure a way to make iWeb only use pictures from a portable drive and be able to work with them via iPhoto (and videos via iDVD).
Is it possible to buy a new external drive, load OSX onto it and run my programs on that portable drive -- and have the files also remain on that drive?
That way, I wouldn't suck up all the HD space on what is still our family computer

You can run a separate copy of OSX on the external drive (just use the OSX install disc that came with the computer), but it would be simpler and easier to just store your iPhoto library on the external drive.
I'm assuming you're using your own user account on the computer that's separate from your other family members. If not, this procedure will move the other family members' photos as well as yours, so you might want to make a separate account if you don't already have one (System Preferences -> Accounts -> click the plus sign to add an account).
    1) Drag the iPhoto Library file (inside your Pictures folder) onto the external drive to copy it.
    2) Open up iPhoto while holding the Option key
    3) In the resulting dialog box, choose the iPhoto Library on the external drive. If it isn't in the list, choose Other Library and find the file on the external drive.
All your apps that work from the iPhoto library (iWeb, iDVD, etc) should now use the copy on the external drive.

If you installed the Seagate software, remove it according to the manufacturer's instructions.
