Unknown characters showing up with Word import.

I am new to using Acrobat to create documents and am having trouble with importing from Word 2007. I start by selecting Create -> PDF From File. And this works fine except that on my table of contents I get a bunch of very small extra characters. If I start off by using Word to export to PDF I don't see this issue. Can anyone identify what is happening? I am using Adobe Acrobat X1 (11.0.06) and Word 2007 SP3.
This is what I see when veiwing at 800%, when at 100% they just look like commas.

Do any of these help...

  • Splitting files with Word import

    Hi
    I am using Robohelp 7 (from tech comms suite). I'm importing
    a word document containing a lot of sections, each beginning with a
    Heading 1 style heading. I was expecting the import to split each
    of the sections into a separate HTML file. But it doesn't - it
    splits them all into separate topics (so TOC is absolutely
    correct), but only 2 or 3 of them are in separate HTML files in the
    resulting project. Is these some special formatting I need to
    include in the Word document to get them all to split into separate
    HTML files?
    (looks a bit naff to have some topics as very long files
    containing multiple topics).
    Thanks!
    Jim

    Hey I know this topic seem to have died a few month ago, but
    I have had the same problem and it seems many others have as well.
    I seemed to have found a solution, at least for my situation.
    THE PROBLEM: The problem seems to be unique with RH7 since i
    did not have this issue in RH5, but the root seems to be with the
    way word handles styles. For things like paragraph styles you can
    click on on a paragraph(not highlight) and apply the style. This
    works in word but this causes problems with Robo Help. so if you
    apply a paragraph style w/o highlighting then apply a character
    empahsis style on a word...you would notice in RH5 that the
    paragraph would be highlighted from that word on. Somehow in RH7
    this issue now also causes problems with creating topics and not
    just with in topic formatting.
    THE SOLUTION: This solution is time consuming, but you will
    have to go back and reapply your styles to your document. The best
    way to do this is to select a group of text you will format such as
    a body paragraph or a heading and CLEAR FORMATING. Sometimes you
    will not be able to clear format...if this happens you probably do
    not have the entire paragraph highlighted (this is a likely culprit
    of the problem). When re-applying the styles make sure to apply
    styles in the following order to prevent issues.
    1. Apply Body or Paragraph styles.
    2. Apply numbering or bulletings styles.
    3. Apply character Emphasis Styles.
    Remember you must clear the formatting before you re-apply or
    the issue will not resolve.Since this can be time consuming I
    suggest trying this on a few heading first starting from the top of
    the document just to make sure this works for you.

  • WD2013 shows dialog with words from two languages (and badly worded message) when notifying of an editing conflict when saving to SharePoint

    Hi,
    during testing of a solution för Office/SharePoint we noticed that the dialog that warns that an editing (change) conflict has occured at saving, contains words from both swedish (the version we use) and english. (The sw grammar is abysmal btw.) Does any
    of you know if that is a localization  bug that has been corrected in some patch ?
    Image of dialog (notice occurence of english words amidst local language text):
    [image could not be uploaded due to this unexplicaple message: "Body text cannot contain images or links until we are able to verify your account."--is being a logged in MSDN account holder not qualifying enough?]
    So here goes in text form (english words within asterisks)
    "När du sparar hitta uppdateringar för Word dokument med ändringar som gjorts av *others*. *You* kan lägga nytt innehåll genom att söka efter grönt överlägg"

    Hi Q2014,
    Is there two language packs installed on your PC?
    First, you can try to repair Office 2013 from Control Panel > Programs and Features >Office > Change > Repair. Then make sure that Office and Windows are up-to-date.

  • Keywords imported but don't show up with photos

    I am not getting keywords to show up with imported photos. i've done a lot of searching on this and other forums to try to figure out what is different about my situation but to no avail. here's what I've deduced though:
    the keywords will import if I deselect “Copy the items to the iPhoto Library”. But if I leave the default box checked", I will not get keywords associated with the photos.
    (the rest of my discussion deals with a library where the imported photos ARE copied to the library)
    Interestingly, the keywords ARE imported into iPhoto (if one looks at the keyword list); they just aren't attached to the photos (i.e. clicking <Get Info> shows no keywords, as opposed to them being there but just not showing up on the screen with the image). Most (but not all) of my imported photos show up in iPhoto without any keywords attached. Most Events are all-or-nothing; i.e. all the photos of the event either have keywords or don’t. At least one Event is a mix. I cannot make any sense as to why some do, as the ones that do will be part of an event that all the other photo's don't show the keywords; additionally, neither the ones with nor the ones without keywords share any common feature or change (e.g. edited, rotated, file type, keyword/tag name, etc.).
    I'm a pretty basic user when it comes to photos (but with a fair amount of common sense and computer knowledge); not trying to do anything fancy here. I don't know much about photography, so I'm not manipulating photo settings on my camera and am not (purposefully/knowingly) manipulating the metadata directly from the file. So, I'm baffled as to why my system would be acting differently than any other "out of the box" iMac.
    In case it matters:
    -- the photos being imported originated from a Windows-based PC and tagged by Adobe Photoshop Elements. I have the same problem regardless of whether I export them (using Photoshop) to a file on the iMac or directly import them over the network from the PC using iPhoto.
    -- (Using iPhoto Library Manager) I created another iPhoto library to see if the same thing would happen with photos imported to a different library -- same problem. (BTW, I checked the new library's Keywords BEFORE I imported to make sure the keyword "library" wasn't somehow replicated from the previous library.)
    -- In one of your forum discussions, you said that these “copies” would be in the “Originals” folder within the iPhoto package, right? If so, then they are the same size as the files being imported minus a few KBs, presumably due to the lack of associated keywords.
    I assume that these "copied" files are suppose to retain their keyword/tag info. Any ideas why they aren't and/or what I can do about it? I tried rebuilding the database too but that didn't do any good. I'm figuring on trying to reimport everything again, but I fear I'll get the same result.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First try the simple fix: delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. Launch iPhoto and see if the keywords show up. If not, then launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
    NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Problems with non-ASCII characters on Linux Unit Test Import

    I found a problem with non-ASCII characters in the Unit Test Import for Linux.  This problem does not appear in the Unit Test Import for Windows.
    I have attached a Unit Test export called PROC1.XML  It tests a procedure that is included in another attachment called PROC1.txt. The unit test includes 2 implementations.  Both implementations pass non-ASCII characters to the procedure and return them unchanged.
    In Linux, the unit test import will change the non-ASCII characters in the XML file to xFFFD. If I copy/paste the the non-ASCII characters into the Unit Test after the import, they will be stored and executed correctly.

    On a Win 7 machine the SSID list of available wireless networks is showing up with special characters in place of the normal letters in the name of the SSID... • Can I use Word tables in InDesign?  Any way to import tables made with Word?

    Hi, I'm new here...  Well, the title says it all: I need to use (basically unchanged) nearly 100 tables from a book made recently with Word... Can I import them?
    It wouldn't be a problem making one new one (lines, etc...) with InDesign and then fill with text, but...  why repeat 100 different tables (that's my case) already done I can use without changes...  There must be a way to at least place a Word table into an ID document...  Thanks for all kinds of comments!

    OK, this looks like great news for me... So I understand ID places the Word table, and once inside ID, indeed ID sees it as a table you can vary... Is there any basic menu to vary one imported table, or is it a graphic (mouse) thing?  I really appreciate your advice, Bob...  I don't have much experience with tables in ID...  For example, how can I make the whole table smaller? Only by varying the placing of the lines one by one, or can I make it smaller in the way we make a jpg smaller?

    It is possible the versions you have are not compatible with your new Mac. Could you please tell us the following:
    1. What OS are you running.
    To get this info, click on the Apple on the top left, then select About This Mac. The OS X version is there.
    2. What are the versions of the apps that are giving you problems?

    Not sure I understand your reference to Flip Player - this is not related to the "won't open" problem, is it?

  • Maintaining internal word cross references in word import

    I'm using RoboHelp 9.0.1 trying to import Word 2007 (docx) in order to generate a WebHelp. I have adjusted my style mapping in order generate an appropriate TOC with books and matching sub chapters, which works fine. However, internal Word cross references from the original Word document are not transformed into hyperlinks.
    I have already tried/verified the following:
    - The "convert cross references to hyperlink" option is checked in the RH-Word import settings.
    - I also tried fiddling with the Framemaker options as it is suggested in another thread (see beneath), with no success.
    - Within the Word source document I tried both options with "use hyperlinks instead" when creating cross references.
    - The RH-HTML source, in all of my attempts, does not show any links in the corresponding locations.
    What may I be missing here? According to another, similar thread, the feature should work and is really not that challenging:
    "RH9 - Can not create ANY links in linked Word documents"
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/854095?tstart=0

    In my testing, I got a link in the RH topic, but it wanted to launch the target Word doc instead of jumping to the desired RH topic. I'd say this sounds like a bug - so go ahead and report it.

  • Accented characters showing up as ? in JRE1.3 but ok in 1.2

    I'm implementing a database web interface product that utilizes JSPs (on SunOS 5.7).
    The problem is in the search form. When using accented characters (French language), the JSP calls on URLEncode, but all accented characters show up as '?'.
    However, when editing a record, using accented characters is not a problem (i.e., the accented characters are properly stored in the fields).
    Back on the server, I ran a small program to output accented characters and also to call java.net.URLEncoder to convert the characters.
    The default JDK is J2SE (1.3.1). Compiliing and running the program results in question marks.
    Using JDK 1.2, the accented characters show up fine.
    It would appear that URLEncoder is not at fault, but instead, JDK 1.3.1 doesn't seem to handle the accented characters.
    I figure there must be a setting somewhere, but I'm not sure where.
    Here's the program I used (written in Win98, using standard Win-based character set and Unicode format \u00xx; in Unix, "more" displays the Win accented characters fine but "vi" displays them as \xxx; compiles and displays perfectly when using JDK 1.2):
    import java.net.*;
    class mine {
    public static void main(String args[]) {
    System.out.println("") ;
    System.out.println(URLEncoder.encode("")) ;
    System.out.println("\u00e0\u00e2\u00e4");
    System.out.println("\351");
    System.out.println("\351\347\356\364\373\340\350\342\344\374\357") ;
    The output with JDK 1.2 is:

    %E9%E7%EE%F4%FB%E0%E8%E2%E4%FC%EF

    The output with JDK 1.3.1 is:
    %3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F

    Between jdk1.2 and jdk 1.3 the default encoding of the vm changed.
    You can get it by executing:
    System.out.println("Default Encoding:" + System.getProperty("file.encoding"));
    or
    System.out.println("Default Encoding:" + (new java.io.InputStreamReader(System.in)).getEncoding());
    The default encoding is used during the conversion of bytes to strings and vice verca.
    Assume your default encoding is ISO8859_1. Then calling new String(byte[]) is equivalent to calling
    new String(byte[], "ISO8859_1")
    Now if you are converting a character from one encoding scheme to another and there is no mapping
    for this character in the target scheme. Then the character will be replaced by a default character
    which is (quite often) the question mark.
    You can set the default encoding for a vm by passing it as a command line parameter
    java -Dfile.encoding=ISO8859_1
    java -Dfile.encoding=Cp1252

  • Issue with Word 2010

    Hi Team,
    We are facing issue with Word 2010.
    User has created a document in Word 2007 and they inserted a symbol °C in Times New Roman and Areal.
    Please find below the text which has issue.
    干燥温度:60℃
    温度:95℃,
    In the document, instead of ℃ it is showing blocks, when we open it in MS Word  2010. (Eg: 60℃, 95℃).
     We have tried the following.
    1.       If we select the square and click on any other font, it will change to °C with formatted font Cambria Math. We can have it by selecting any font.
    2.       I have tried to copy the line and paste it to excel/WordPad/notepad
    •  Excel(2010) : It is displayed properly(°C) but the font was Times New Roman and Arial as the word document has Times New Roman and Arial respectively.
    •  Notepad: It is displayed properly(°C) but the font was Lucida Console
    •  WordPad: The symbol is not displayed correctly (Squares and vertical lines). It is having the same issue as we have with word document.
    3.       I just selected the whole text and had Ctrl+space , then all the corrupted characters turned to original one (°C with formatted font Cambria Math) : we can use this as a work around.
    4.       I have created a word document and I typed °C in that document with fonts Times New Roman ,Arial, SimSun and STKaiti and saved the document. When I opened the document I was able to see °C properly.
    Kindly help.
    Regards,
    Sooraj

    Hi Sooraj:
    For checking the encoding of your documents, please follow below steps:
    Rename your documents from xxxx.docx to xxxx.zip
    The zip folder will contains basically folders: rels, docProps, word and one [Content_Types].xml
    Browse to word, open document.xml file,
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="true"?>,
    the first line will suggest the encoding type of the document.
    Except checking the encoding difference, could you please do one more thing that is copying the font like
    “Times New Roman” from a computer which display the symbol correctly to the computer which has issue, and please let me know the results, thank you.

  • Chinese characters show up as white boxes when doing captions

    I am using Premiere Pro CC 2014 on a late 2013 MacBook Pro. I am trying to add Traditional Chinese subtitles to my video. I have imported a .dfxp file and added it to the timeline on V2 above my video track on V1. I have rendered the timeline. I have activated the closed captioning display. When I view the .dfxp file in the Captions Window, I can see the Chinese characters in the text boxes with their associated in and out points on the timeline. THE PROBLEM: IN THE PROGRAM MONITOR WINDOW, THE CHINESE CHARACTERS SHOW UP AS WHITE BOXES INSTEAD OF THE CHINESE CHARACTERS.
    I have added all of the available Chinese fonts from Adobe Typekit. I have restarted Premiere to see if adding these fonts did anything to help. It did not. My question: how can I get the Chinese characters to appear instead of the white boxes?
